Four ideas
1.
People show great interest in forming organizations aimed at meeting their specific demands. This tendency, for some people, is good based on the fact that unity is strength whereas there are others who claim that this will deprive the unorganized of their due rights and privileges.
• How well founded are these two view points in your opinion?
2.
It is common is in some cultures that certain animals are given great privileges. This for some people is no good sign of civilization whereas there are others who see great implications in such a man-animal equation.
• How do you see the first view?
• What does it imply when certain animals are respected?
3.
Some city planners put in great emphasis on vertical growth whereas there are some others who claim that cities should grow horizontally.
• What are the advantages of vertical and horizontal growth of cities?
4.
With internal migration picking up much faster than ever, great many people from rural areas happen to live in smaller spaces in urban landscapes.
• How hard is it for them to be in such a transition?
• Do you think it is possible to discourage this movement?

Ecological benefit is taken by ecologists as a viable option to maintain green cover. But there is an argument that this will halt growth as the benefit offered may not be at par with the production, if the land is used differently.
Discuss both the views and say what you feel about the concept.
Ecological benefit: an allowance paid to those landowners who have some measures of green cover and are ready to keep it in tact for the well-being of the planet.

Speedy carbon recycling is the need of the hour, and ecologists find ecological benefit as a feasible option. But the concern that it would slow down growth is not unfounded. I feel that ecological benefit is to be promoted.
It is the talk of the world that our Planet needs to be protected from the perils of carbon. Since green cover is the only solution, ecologists are of the view that the existing green needs to be kept to meet the challenges. Naturally, there is need for individual participation. This, in turn, demands government support. If governments can meet the expectations of people who have their own green cover, they would keep it for the well being of the world. So offering decent ecological benefits to individuals would help a lot in making the Planet breathe easy.
However, mere green coven maintenance wouldn’t meet the needs of the world population. The concern that it would slowdown growth needs to be addressed. Today, humans are much better placed with efficient technologies to be applied in agriculture to augment production. There are research and development options to meet the rising needs of man, too. Finally, humans themselves can control population. This will keep his needs controlled, and the Planet may be at ease to keep the population fed well.
Looking at both the views, it is right to conclude that future of the Planet lies in the hands of every individual, and uniform participation alone would make a difference in carbon management. Ecological benefit sounds so excellent a concept to me.

I am a subscriber to your cable network and my number is 234.29988, located at Barbey lane, third block.
I am writing this to inform you that, of late, my cable connection gives me constant problems with regards to sound quality, picture clarity and regular airing of certain channels.
I have reported this case many times by telephone, and a few of days back, I met one of your service engineers and told him of this persistent problem. Though he had promised me immediate repairs within a day or so, I have not received any kind of attention from your side.
So I am forced to record here that, unless I get my cable fixed within 24 hours, I would be forced to withdraw my subscription and go for a new service provider.
And please not that it would not be possible for me to pay the last bill of your subscription on account of your being poor in service.
Awaiting your immediate reply

Sir,
This has reference to the news I read the other day that a new project is going to come up at our place called Kumarakom. Upon further enquiry, I have come to know that this new project is aimed at processing the waste generated by Kottayam town.
This in my view is going to be a serious environmental issue as Kumarakam is a tourist destination which promotes various aqua tourism activities, and the annual revenue generated by this place crosses millions. Therefore, it is extremely important to look into the environmental and social aspects of this particular project covering some ten acres of land.
Further, there is going to be great threat of epidemics too as waste dumped in here may get mixed with the lake waters. So, I would like the authorities to look into this issue and halt the project for the time being.
And your Daily’s concern towards issues of common interest is known for all, and I am hopeful that this letter would reach the right people.

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
Your heighbours have recently written to you to complain about the noise from your house/flat.
Write a letter to your neighbours. In your letter
explain the reasons for the noise
apologise
describe what action you will take
Write at least 150 words.
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ................. ,
Model answer:
Dear James,
I was very shocked to get your letter saying that the noise from my flat has been spoiling your evenings and causing you some distress. I am really, really sorry about that. I had no idea that you would be able to hear so much, so I hope you will accept my apologies.
As you may have guessed, I am trying to refit my kitchen in the evenings when I get home from work. Unfortunately it is all getting longer than expected and I have been having problems with getting things to fit properly. This has meant to a lot of banging and hammering.
As the kitchen is still not finished, I have decided to call in a professional builder who will finish the work in the next day or two. He’ll work only during daytime hours, so you won’t be disturbed in the evenings again, I promise.
Sorry to have caused these problems,
Bill.

Four questions on education
1.
Looking at the increasing popularity of distance education as a higher studies mode, some people view that higher education does not need to be direct and it is good to phase out direct higher education.
• Why is it that great many people prefer distance learning to direct learning?
• Do you think replacing direct higher education facilities with distance mode is worth a try?
2.
E. learning has been able to win over the minds of millions across the world, and there are apprehensions that not many would go for direct learning in the long run.
• What are the factors that make e. learning attractive?
• Do you think the number of those who go for direct learning would come down in the long run?
www.ielts74allmodules.blogspot.com 13.12.011
3.
There is a view that, since access to information of all types is possible for all thanks to the Net and media, higher education aspirants do not need to attend regular classes; instead they could prove their excellence by clearing exams set by universities.
• Do you think access to information is enough to make one off the classroom for long?
• Is qualification just a matter of clearing some exams set by an authority?
4.
The purpose of basic education as such, in the opinion of some academics, is to make one an independent learner so that over dependence on faculty and academic infrastructure could be minimized greatly.
• What in your opinion is the prime purpose of basic education?
• How right is it to ignore faculty and infrastructure?

General training Letter one
Dear Sir / Madam
I am writing in connection with my recent stay at the Four Seasons in London, England. Unfortunately, due to a malfunctioning heater in my room, I spent three miserable nights at your hotel from April 26 – 29, 2010.
When I arrived in London, there was an unexpected snowstorm. I understand it does not usually snow in April; however, when I got to my room, there was no heat. After complaining, a technician was sent up, who informed me they had to install a new heating unit. When I asked to be moved to another room, I was told the hotel was completely booked. Unfortunately, each night after work I returned to discover the problem had not been rectified. Eventually, I spent three horribly uncomfortable nights, wearing my coat to bed, wearing socks around the room and ending up with a bad cold from the unheated room. I had no time to complain as I had to catch a flight home right after my conference.
I am shocked by this terrible service. This is not what anyone expects for $400 a night! To compensate me for this tremendous inconvenience, I ask that you refund my money right away and offer me a free, more comfortable stay in one of your finer suites in the future. If not, I am prepared to take my complaint to a higher authority.
I look forward to hearing from you at the earliest,
Yours faithfully,
Mr John McFee

Some institutions follow open book examinations.
What are its advantages?
Do you think that exams should be memory-based?
When it comes examinations different institutions follow different methods, and one such method is open book examination. But some are against it and they say examinations should to be memory-based. I think open exam has its own merits, and we need to evaluate a student in all possible ways.
First of all, let me look at the advantages. This method allows students access to books at the time of examination. The primary advantage is that it requires the student to understand the question in such a way that he is able to find out answer to it referring to a book or many books in the given time. Secondly, it encourages self study because the institution may be giving them only basic guidelines as to cover the areas of a particular subject or paper. Thirdly, the examiners have the freedom to raise any question in the exam, and the students can expect to face them too. These are some of the advantages.
Coming to should exams be memory-based, I would argue that it need not be only memory based. The reasons are that memorizing does not work in today’s performance requirements, and those who are able to memories huge amount of information are book worms. And education as we all know needs to give a student varying opportunities to put him or her to test. Testing the memory is one of them, not all. Further more, when students are required to be tested for other skills like time management, problem solving, reasoning and multi-tasting in exam conditions, they become competitive and industry-friendly.
The pointers make me conclude that all examinations, including open book examinations, have their own merits and demerits. However, restricting exams as some exercise that tests a student’s memorizing skill is not a good idea. Rather exams need to evaluate a student in as many ways as there are skills and potentials.
