If you live in Britain, as I do, it doesn't take long to realise that whatever direction you take, it isn't long before you reach the sea. And of course if you don't like flying, as I don't, and you want to travel to another country, you have to cross that strip of water between England and France called the Channel. It will come as no surprise therefore that this mass of water we call "sea" and all the things people do on it have had a great influence on daily language.
In terms of expressions where the word "sea" itself appears, the emphasis is on its great size. After all more of the earth is covered with water than land and it wasn't that long ago when people thought that once you went over the horizon in your boat, you fell off the end of the world!
Imagine that you've just started in a new job and only a few days later you find yourself alone in your place of work. Then the telephone rings and you very nervously answer it. You get asked lots of questions. You don't know the answers and you don't know where anything is kept. You are totally confused and can't help the caller -- "You are all at sea."
At lunchtime you feel you must have something to eat after all the problems you've had and you go into the firm's canteen. The trouble is that as you're new, you don't know anyone and the place is full of hundreds of people and you think they're all looking at you. You go down the stairs and can see this enormous number of unknown faces -- "a sea of faces".
Let me finish with an expression some hundreds of years old created by our greatest national poet, Shakespeare, which is still very much in use today. When we want to talk about a dramatic alteration taking place that affects many people like for example the ending of apartheid in South Africa, we call this in Shakespeare's words -- "a sea change." And now as it's high summer, I'd like to go for a long walk in the countryside but I can't really because as well as being surrounded by sea in this small island, we have a few problems with another mass of water inland too -- in other words it's raining!

Conservation of wild animals and their habitat is claiming sizeable amounts of money from the treasury every year. But it is argued that wild-life as such does not contribute much in accordance with the size of money it takes ever year.

Conservation of wildlife and their habitat is very much in the agenda of all governments. That itself is reason enough to prove that it is warranted. Looking at wild life in monitory terms is a kind of isolating man from the rest of the world.
Basically, man is a social animal as other animals are of their respective habitats. Unfortunately, today we think that our habitat is confined to our society, and that society is able to sustain all by itself. It is a foolish idea. There are innumerable examples to prove that conserving the wild is like conserving what is modern. For example, it is the habitats of wild animals that make carbon recycling possible. Actually, wild animals and their habitats are what make man’s life livable.
Coming to monitory benefits of conservation outlay, it is right to say that contribution of wild life and their habitat to man cannot be equated in terms of anything. It is a fact that governments spend much for wild life protection. If we look at the size of money they allocate and the quantum of service they get in return, we can understand that there is a huge difference not by way of the size of the money spent, but by way of the benefits reaped. In simple terms, it is more like conserving man himself than conserving the wild.
Looking at the argument in the light of the above inferences, it is right to conclude that man does not have separate existence. So whatever he spends for conservation of wild life and its habitat is much more worthwhile than what ever amounts he spends, and on what.

Aged population is taken by some as a great asset to the younger generation whereas there are some who feel that rising old age population is a social liability.

Human life span is on the rise thanks to better living conditions and medical innovations. This development is taken differently by different people. However, in my view longer-living people are a great source of wealth of varying dimensions.
My first argument supporting this view is that older population has great wealth of knowledge garnered from scores of years’ experience, and this knowledge and expertise cannot be calculated in terms of money. The same way, experts who are healthy enough to continue in some services can be made use of for the betterment of any community. Openings like advisors, resource persons, consultants and the like are worth filled in by senior citizens. It is unfortunate to look at such professionals as a liability.
Let me substantiate my view with a few examples. An aged farmer may not be able to contribute much to farming sector by way of hard work. But he or she is a store-house of farming lessons gathered out of hand on experience, and such knowledge will be great service to modern farming sector. The same way let’s take the case of an academic who is healthy and has some 25 or 30 years’ teaching experience. Is it fair to leave him or her saying that ‘you are so old that you cannot help a society?’ Such a person would do much more to education than any youngster could.
So, to conclude, I think it is the duty of the healthy ones to make use of those ones who have become old and, some times, unhealthy by contributing to society. Calling them a liability is no sign of civilization. Worldly wisdom is a virtue.

Let me see how feasible the idea is. First of all, rich economies are in a better position to take part in any disaster management efforts thanks to their being strong in almost all walks of life. Secondly, mobilizing the most important things to manage disasters like men and machinery, technology and essential supplies like medicine, food, clothing, roofing etc. is much easier today than ever. Finally, since mutual benefit is being appreciated world over, mutual participation in distress management is but a reasonable idea, and not many nations would fail to comply.
Coming to the advantages, the foremost thing is that people living disaster prone areas will have great relief. Secondly, a global system will be able to mitigate the gravity of disasters by way of reduced casualties, faster rehabilitation, reconstruction and normal life. Should parents be obliged to immunize their children against common serious and disabling diseases? Or, do individuals have the right to choose not to immunize their children?

• What do you say?
I think it is the most important responsibility of parents to protect their children from common childhood diseases. This is the moral obligation of parents towards their children. I feel that individual should not be given the freedom to choose not to immunize their children.
Children who live in the rural areas, where standard of sanitation is very poor, are under the constant threat of infectious diseases. Some people are unaware of the need to keep their environment neat and tidy. Health education and awareness meetings should be provided to these people. A process called immunization can build the child’s immunity against serious infectious diseases. Nowadays, vaccination is used for immunization. The killer diseases like Tuberculosis, Measles etc. can be prevented by active immunization.
In my perception, parents must show seriousness about the health of their children. They must know the immunization schedule provided by the hospitals or health care system. And when it comes to whether individuals should be given the right to choose not to immunize their children against diseases, my stance is that there should not be a choice at all. Every responsible individual should be made to understand the importance of immunization and the government should oversee the process of immunization.
To conclude it, it is right to say preventions is better than cure, and bringing up a healthy generation for the coming days is the responsibility of every individual. And immunization is the first step towards this. Here there is choice or right. It is mandatory.

Respect quotient between parents and children: what makes it? Intelligent controls or enough freedom?
What decides the respect quotient that exists between parents and children? There are several factors of course. When it comes to intelligent controls and enough freedom, I tend to endorse the latter one based on single point. Let me prove it.
My argument favouring freedom is that it is freedom that leads to responsibility. There is a popular quote which goes like this: Freedom is responsibility” . The idea contained in such a pithy statement is exactly applicable here in this respect also, because only when there is freedom, there is room for responsibility. The sense of responsibility one comes to acquire all by oneself on the grounds that the freedom one enjoys has a serious other side, too. That is responsibility.
Obviously, this responsibility leads to obedience. Obedience gets generated out of respect. Let us take the case of our freedom of expression. When we enjoy it, we are bound to let others enjoy it too. That is, we have to respect the freedom of expression of others as well. So is the case with the freedom given to children with regard to respect quotient. This, in my opinion, is a two way process.
