The issue of discarded computers and other electronics wastes is not a trivial matter any more. So people all around the world need to make changes as to how they handle these products to help ensure a clean environment for future generations.

With consumers and businesses constantly replacing electronic devices, the volume of abandoned computer and electronic waste is growing alarmingly. So there is pressing need for wiser management of this issue. It is needed for today and tomorrow’s healthy environment.
One of the severest problems the Planet is currently facing is waste, hazardous, harmful and less harmful. Among them, the volume of used and nonfunctioning electronic goods filling up the world’s dumps is growing alarmingly. This is so alarming that the coming generation would find itself caught in the nightmare of diseases and poor living environments. This poor state of affairs is not only harmful to humans, but all the flora and fauna of the world would get affected and life on the Planet would be nearly impossible.
This deadlock needs immediate attention of one and all. How best can the world take care of it? Or, who will bell the cat? What I for one find is that corporate giants, including computer manufacturers such as Apple, IBM, Dell and HP; electronics manufacturers such as Toshiba and Motorola; cellular manufacturers such as Nokia and Verizon, to mention a few, should initiate a combined effort to see that the wastes their products and services generate are responsibly managed. Once they show a feasible way out, the smaller organizations would follow suit.
Winding up the discussion, I find it right to say that all environmental issues are absolutely manmade. Therefore, it is the need of the hour that man himself takes up this issue not only for his immediate wellbeing, but also for the sake of all the generation to come.

The plethora of new products introduced each year is growing by leaps and bounds. Their combined efforts have been labeled the Rethink Initiative. The problem of throwing away outdated equipment is no small matter; hundreds of millions of computers, cell phones, video and stereo equipment, and other electronics either sit on shelves or end up in the garbage all across America every year. The Rethink Initiative hopes to educate and inspire consumers to make smart choices about how to dispose of their outdated equipment responsibly.
The Rethink Initiative is a combined effort between a host of corporate giants, including computer manufacturers such as Apple, IBM, Dell, HP, and Gateway; electronics manufacturers such as Toshiba and Motorola; cellular manufacturers such as Nokia and Verizon; and even retail giants such as Best Buy and Circuit City.

When it comes to education, children should have the final say on what they need to study, and, therefore, parents' pressure on children is an unhealthy practice.

Who should have the last say when it comes to education; parents or children? I am of the opinion that children should be given that privilege. It doesn’t mean parents are not party to it. They need to be healthy facilitators.
Right education is what makes a child become what actually he or she is. This education is better only when the child decides what he or she likes to study. On the other hand, if parents impose decisions on children, there may be compliance and results, but the child will never be successful. For example, every child is born with a talent or two, and children have hundreds of ways to be successful. Identifying one’s way is to be done by children themselves. In this decision-making process, undue parental pressure is nothing but unhealthy.
However, this does not make parents devoid of any role. Rather they need to know that children love their parents more when they (children) are heard than when they are forced. Summer vacation is exclusively for children's multi-faceted development and, therefore, there should not be any academic exercises during this period.
• How far do you agree or disagree with this view?
Of late some parents force their children to do academic activities during summer vacation. This, in my opinion, is really unfair. There are many arguments to prove that summer vacation is not for academics but for students’ holistic development.
Firstly, students who go through ten-month-long academics eagerly wait for their vacation to come by. They have great expectations and there are great many things to be done during this carefree life. Secondly, academics alone cannot make a student successful. All students have personal interests. Summer vacation gives them a chance to pursue such interests. Thirdly, socializing, taking part in physically and intellectually involving sports and games, visiting homes of friends’ and relatives and the like are possible during vacation.
Above all, vacation gives them opportunities to learn life skills like swimming, climbing trees, trekking and the list goes endless. When children have all these things in their agenda during vacation, is it fair to impose any academics, let it be of some future implication too, on them? It is unfair in many more counts. So it is better let them from doing any academic activities.
However, if students themselves are prepared enough to pursue some academic activities so that they could be much confident when then get graduated to a higher level, it is welcome and worth encouraging too. But there should not be any coercion of any kind. Concentration should be more on their many sided development than mere academics.
The above arguments are enough to support the view expressed. But there is room for academics only if children desire so. Here also I think it is better if parents encourage their children to engage themselves in non-academic pursuits.

Well, my state is known for great green cover.
And it has great wealth of tree varieties, too
The one I would like to talk about is the most common coconut tree.
To begin with, this tree is so common in our state.
And our state is named after this tree.
That is, Keralam in Malayalam means the land of Kera trees.
Something, special about this tree, I think, is that it is ubiquitous.
There is no family in the countrysides without at least a coconut tree.
Coming to its other features, it is a tree of great significance.
Primarily, it is a tree of spiritual and cultural significance.
That is, coconut is seen as a sign of wealth and prosperity.
And people use it on all major occasions:
Like marriages, poojas, rituals and ceremonies.
Secondly, all the parts of this tree are useful someway.
Its trunk is so hard and lasting that people use it for furniture.
Its leaves are also useful. Plaited leaves are used for thatching roofs
And coconut kernel and oil products are widely used in Kerala dishes
And finally, its shell and husk are raw materials.
They are used for coir products and many artifacts.
All the other parts, say, its dry bunches,
its pods and leaf bones, to mention a few, are used as firewood.
Well, it would be unfair if I don’t mention about tender coconut.
It is a great health drink, which both the natives and tourists like alike.
Even doctors recommend it. It is a rejuvenating drink for patients.
Those who suffer from dehydration, diarrhoea etc get seedy recovery.
So this tree is socially, medically and spiritually significant.

Since every mistake is taken as an opportunity to do better, some people believe that children should be given enough freedom to commit mistakes, whereas some others say they should be instructed to avoid mistakes as it enables them to be careful and conscious.

There are differing views on whether children be given enough freedom to commit mistakes or they should be encouraged to avoid mistakes. But it is a fact that committing mistakes is an opportunity that makes children do well. I think pressing children to avoid mistakes may hamper learning.
Not many would deny the fact that learning is a complex process involving a lot of exercises. One such exercise is doing and learning. For example, when children are given freedom to commit mistakes, while engaged in some learning activity, they are likely to feel at home and do err. When the teacher or the mentor highlights the mistake and rectifies them, the ward happens to get the gravity of the mistake s/he has done. It helps her/him correct it once and for all.
On the contrary, if we insist our children to avoid mistakes, what happens is that it hampers the learning process, because, children are free learners and it is their sense of freedom that makes them at ease. Still, wanting them not to commit mistakes is good to some extent because it makes children conscious of what they are doing. Since change is natural and development is but change, the possibility for change in cultural values too is possible in today’s fast paced world. It is true to a great extent that, irrespective of place and time, development changes values.
To begin with, change is quiet human and it is humans’ inherent urge to change from what is today that has made them stand where they are standing now. Obviously, a change is not possible without touching the things around whether it is physical or cultural or even spiritual.
Let me cite an example to prove my point. In the past people attached a lot of sentiments with personal and family visits. People used to complain of if the frequency is far beyond their expectations. But now, thanks to development is communication and fast paced life, people are happy the way they are. In short, it is right to conclude that development is bound to change established values greatly today. However, we cannot ignore the fact that human life per se has become much better. At least people have developed such a culture of change and development.

Since change is natural and development is but change, the possibility for change in cultural values too is possible in today’s fast paced world. It is true to a great extent that, irrespective of place and time, development changes values.
To begin with, change is quiet human and it is humans’ inherent urge to change from what is today that has made them stand where they are standing now. Obviously, a change is not possible without touching the things around whether it is physical or cultural or even spiritual.
Let me cite an example to prove my point. In the past people attached a lot of sentiments with personal and family visits. People used to complain of if the frequency is far beyond their expectations. But now, thanks to development is communication and fast paced life, people are happy the way they are. No matter they meet face to face or visit each other’s family. It did have some cultural value, we cannot help it though.

Writing Task 2
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Write about the following topic:
In a recent survey conducted in this country, it was found that up to 20% of twelve year-olds in some schools were showing early signs of nicotine addiction.
In the eighteen to twenty year age bracket the percentage was as high as 70%. A large contributing factor to this high level of addiction is attributed to the uncensored TV advertising of cigarettes. For this reason all cigarette advertising should be banned.
Discuss.
Write at least 250 words.
Task 2 Model Answer
The issue of cigarette advertising is an important one, especially in this country where so many young adolescents smoke. One of the main causes of this problem is peer pressure. Another cause is advertising, especially TV advertising.
(This could have been the second paragraph: in the original these two were together)
Smoking, as we all know, leads to a number of health problems such as cancer and heart disease. Many people think that cigarette advertising should not be banned since this would limit our free choice in this matter. However, there is growing evidence that this serious problem is getting out of control. Let us examine the facts more closely.
The most important reason why cigarette advertising should be banned is that cigarette is bad for our health. Smoking causes lung cancer and heart disease. Many people also suffer from slow and painful death from a disease called emphysema.
Another important reason why cigarette advertising should be banned is that it costs the tax payer money. People who become sick from smoking have to be cared for in expensive hospitals. In addition, their deaths often result in financial problem for their families.
Finally cigarette smoking may lead to another problem namely drug addiction. Although there is not conclusive evidence that this often happens, many experts in this area feel that there is a connection between the two.
Perhaps a solution to this problem is the education of young children concerning the dangers of taking up this habit. Also a heavy tax could be placed on cigarettes so that youngsters would not be able to afford them. In any case, it seems beyond any reasonable doubt that cigarette advertising should be banned.
Comments on evaluation:
1. Very good language which is worth fetching above 7 band.
2. Unusually long introduction running nearly upto 100 words
3. The issue is this: A large contributing factor to this high level of addiction is attributed to the uncensored TV advertising: so there needs banning. Here is a slight failure with regard to task fulfillment in the sense that the writer seems to have ignored the fact that it is all about uncensored TV commercials on cigars.
4. Fair word length of 265 words
5. Excellent cohesion and coherence
6. Brilliant vocabulary
7. The question is cigar ads should be banned on the basis of the findings that these ads add to woes of addition found among youngsters. That part is taken as something like: what are the arguments that make banning necessary. These two are different.
8. However, the language is strong enough to leave a lasting impression till the end of the essay making the examiner generously offer a score above 7, if not still higher.
