When did we stop ‘surfing’ the Web?
In the 1997 gem “The Kids’ Guide to the Internet” — now immortalized on YouTube forever — a couple of baby-faced kids in baggy clothes and bad ‘90s haircuts attempt to explain this magical new thing called the Internet to their friends.
“There are three important services you can use to access the Internet,” one boy begins. “Surfing the Web — ” “Surfing!” Interrupts another kid. “That sounds pretty cool already!”
And golly gee, it is! You can surf these things called web pages, his pals tell him. You can surf MTV. You can surf the Smithsonian archives, even!! None of this has changed in the ensuing 18 years, of course, besides kids’ smiley, easily awed enthusiasm. But nobody — and I mean nobody — still says they surf the Internet. In fact, according to Mark Davies’ Corpus of Contemporary English, use of the term peaked right at the turn of the century.
Why exactly did that happen? “Very often when there’s a new technological development, we look for metaphorical language to try to explain it,” explains Ben Zimmer, a linguist and language columnist for the Wall Street Journal. That’s true of much of modern tech parlance — from the idea of “tweeting” to the Web itself.
The problem with these tech metaphors, Zimmer says, is that they don’t have a whole lot of staying power — particularly when it comes to something like the Internet, where a very high premium is put on novelty and timeliness. Online, there is nothing less cool than lag. In fact, I’m probably dating myself by using the word “cool” at all. I should say “hot.” Or “sick.” Or “on fleek.”
“In the case of ‘surfing the Web,’” Zimmer says, “what might have seemed like a fun and catchy metaphor in the late ’90s soon grew stale from overuse. And in techie talk, there’s nothing worse than sounding outdated.” Unless you’re being ironic, of course. That’s still hot sick cool.

Task II
Some artists dedicate their whole life for their creed while others spend their time in a choosy manner so as to get enough time for other personal priorities too. Some say the former approach to art is much more rewarding than the latter.

Do you think so? Or it is a better idea to pursue art along life?

Wage stagnation and career. causes and effects

Though the professional world across the spectrum offers greater possibilities for the employed (people) to better their career prospects, of late, great many are found to be facing what is called wage stagnation, a condition where employees happen to work for longer periods with no raise in their remuneration.

·        What do you think are the causes and effects of this professional condition?

Today, it is possibilities all the way for the working in their corresponding career worlds. This fact notwithstanding, there is wide-spread wage-freeze for great many. This condition, obviously, has got its own causes and effects.

Wage stagnation happens in many ways. Primarily it is due to the frequent down-turns happening around the world. For example, recession is much more common today, and many organizations go volatile depending on the fluctuations in banking instruments. When banks of the richer world call it a day, the professional world may go stagnant leaving the staff in the lurch.

The second thing is that many employees have ceased themselves to be asking for more. This is due to many factors. Basically, they know that a demand for a raise may put their current job in jeopardy. Secondly, the employees know that there are great many people out there prepared to settle for less. No wonder, there is wage stagnation.

The effects of this condition are many. Falling morale of the employee is the biggest loss, and the same would take the performance graph of the organization to newer lows. Secondly, there will be an impression that the economy is going to in shambles and the working class may go reluctant spend what they earn.  Besides all these, we cannot rule out the possibility of many people leaving their regular job for something on  their own. In richer parts of the world, several professional people find it better not to be in-job than working for stagnant pay.

What causes wage stagnation, in short, may vary depending on industry conditions, but the effects of which are likely to have lasting sluggishness across the world. This is a grave concern which needs to be addressed seriously.

Task one GT answering the question

1 Answering the question.

Task achievement (answering the question) is one quarter of your total mark and it is an area in which everyone should do well. This is often, however, not the case.
What you must do is to write a letter, which would fully answer the needs of the problem in a real life situation. Even if you have covered all that the question itself asks, have you included everything in the letter needed to realistically perform its function. For example, a question I have seen somewhere gives the candidate the following task:
You have some library books that you are unable to return as a member of your family in another city has fallen sick and you have had to go and look after them.
Write a letter to the library explaining the situation. Apologize for the inconvenience called and say what you are going to do.
You should write at least 150 words.
This seems a fairly typical IELTS General Training  Task 1 writing question.  Answering the question in a way that will get you a good Task Fulfilment grade needs a number of things for you to do.
1) Write at least 150 words.
Writing less does not answer the question, which tells you to write at least 150 words. If you write less than 150 words, the examiner marking your paper will give you a maximum of 5 for Task Achievement or even less. Making sure that you write enough is one of the vital things you can do when using IELTS practice tests.
2) Fully do all the things that the question asks you.
In this case it asks you to do 3 main things:
1.    explain the situation
2.    apologize for the inconvenience

3.    say what you are going to do

Why hunger and hunger-free world

The world has enough resources to eliminate hunger. Still, millions of people of different parts of the world go to bed hungry.

·         Why is this sorry state of affairs?
·         How can we make the world hunger-free?

It is an undeniable fact that the world is rich enough to keep the whole population fed decently. This condition notwithstanding, people in huge numbers go hungry all over the world. There must be obvious reasons for this, and there are ways to keep the world off hunger.

The primary reason for hunger in this resource-rich world is the uneven distribution of population. For example, demographic findings show that nearly 57 percent of the global population is housed in Asia where, naturally, hunger is common. Besides this, the global resources are divided unequally between poor and rich regions. To be precise, 60 percent of the resources is wielded by the rich European countries and the Americas, and the remaining is left for the rest of the world. No wonder, there is hunger. To cap it all, the rich-poor divided that exists between people of the same population also is able to keep many people hungry.

Anyway, there are ways to see that the wolf is kept at bay. The first way-out is to give quality education for all; so that the educated will find jobs and they will be able to afford three times meal a day. Apart from this, there should be concerted efforts to keep population from exploding further. Along with this, densely populated nation may resort to scientific farming practices so as to meet the rising food needs of the population. The rich nations can share their technology and surplus supplies to other parts of the world.

To put it briefly, hunger in this rich world may have different reasons regionally speaking, but the remedial measures to eradicate it from the face of it are of greater significance wherever there is hunger.

The table explains about the quantity of waste generated by six various nations between 1980 and 2000.The most significant feature is the United State (not. was generated)  generated more wastes than  other five countries. ( not more compared to , rather, it is more than )

In 1980, US produced more wastes (131 million tonnes) whereas, in Ireland, it was only 0.06.  Meanwhile, in Japan, the amount of waste was 28 million while, in Poland and Portugal, it was four (4)  and two(2)  respectively. But the figure of Korea was not recorded in that year. The amount of waste from the US (not. was increased. Was increased means increased by someone) was 151 million tonnes in 1990. ( when figures are given do not use almost and nearly and the like), whereas, Japan and Korea (were created means created by someone) generated almost same quantity of waste, that was 32 and 31 respectively. But, in Poland and Portugal, it was (not waste production was) very less, that was five and three million ( not 5 and 3)  In 2000, only Korea cut down waste production to 19. On the other hand, America’s contribution (not was increased) went up dramatically to 192 in 2000 while, in Japan, it was 53.

To conclude, the total amount of waste the US had at the end of the study period was more than the total waste generated by all the countries all through the years.

Taxing sugar like tobacco. agree or disagree? Solved

Jan15005tasktwo
Some people argue that sugary foods are causing a public health crisis putting pressure on healthcare machinery similar to what smoking does and they should be taxed in the same way as tobacco.

Do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Keeping a health hazard, like tobacco, under heavy tax net is a common followed across the world. In this respect, bringing sugar-intensive foods under such a tax regime is a good idea toward keeping the healthcare system free from further stress.

To me, it is right to agree with the given opinion. The thing is that sugar-rich products have been seen as the prime force behind the alarming rise in the obesity cases across the world. The matter with tobacco is that, by the time people start to use is, they, mostly males, will be in their teens.

But the story is different in the case of sugar which comes to the life of people right in their infancy itself. During teenage, great many would have become a medical eventuality no less severe than one of tobacco. Severe taxing on sugar would go a long way in keeping sugar at bay thereby letting the healthcare systems.

What tobacco does to the world, people and healthcare industry is that it kills people who are using it and those who are passively experiencing its effects. Sugar, in the same way, kills the users and the spoils and well-being of others dear to them. For example, diabetics is almost a contagion across the world, and in India three out of every ten above 40 years of age are suffering from some sugar-related ailments. The medical bills they accrue are phenomenal for any family. Heavy taxing on sugar is right.

My conclusion is, imposing hefty tax on sugar-strong foods is not going to make the world free from sugar-related hazards in a fine morning. How long has the world been fighting against tobacco? It has been ages. However, taxing sugar heavily is right for the world’s health.
