People these days happen to live longer lives thanks to the researches and developments in the field of medicine. This is taken by some as a matter of great concern whereas there are some who feel that it is blessing.

How do you look at these two views?

Research and development in the field of medicine is both blessing and bane in more than one count. From a personal point of view, it is great to be living longer, whereas, environmentally and ecologically speaking, longer lives pressurize the ecology in different ways.

Obviously, primary objective all the researches and developments in the field of medicine are meant for human well being, or to say, to keep humans lead healthier and longer life, to be precise. In this respect, longer life expectancy is what everyone is out looking for. Living a day more is much more valuable than any material possession one happens to have in one’s life. So precious is health or life. Besides this, today life is much more comfortable compared to the past, and people are ready to go to any length to keep their life going. So, medical researches and developments turn out to be a blessing.

On the other hand, longer life expectancy has greater environmental implications. That is population rate may keep going up, and the number of older people in the community will also go higher every passing day. This is a social problem too. It is very difficult either for the government or for the society to look after older people for long. It involves a lot of infrastructure and financial outlay from grassroots levels to national level. Increasing population exerts extra pressure on the ecology by way of resources, food and raw material. So, longer life is a problem.

To conclude it, not many would deny the fact that it is worth living longer. But, we cannot ignore the fact that the world has to welcome many more generations to come. Living healthier is fine, but living an unhealthy longer life is no good.

Though aqua-tourism prospects are widely being exploited world over, it is a fact that this tourism is doing much more harm than good to the people and ecology. So it needs to be discouraged.
How far do you agree or disagree with this?

It is a fact that aqua tourism, as a tourism genre, is doing great harm to people and ecology since it operates on water. So the need for discouraging it is important, but we cannot simply ignore its potential though.
Keeping the available water clean and preserving water reserves undisturbed are of greater importance than what water based tourism is likely to generate by way of revenue. It is evident and a fact that many automobiles are on the move on water, and the effluences they discard are doing great harm to the biodiversity. Coupled with this is the wastage of fresh water for entertainment purposes in water theme parks. Conducting races on water, taking expeditions under water etc disturb aqua life. So the need for discouraging aqua tourism is felt more today than ever.

However, aqua tourism as an industrial component is so powerful that it is able to generate great revenue and employment opportunities to people. So it is hard to simply ignore it, rather, instead of promoting further activity on water, we may be able to develop efficient alternatives means to ensure that water bodies are not harmed. Since the whole world is facing pollution based problems leading to shortage of drinking water, wasting water for tourism is not a good idea.

To conclude it, it is right to say that any development exercise needs to be sustainable and eco-friendly. Otherwise, life on earth in the long run may not be possible. So, aqua tourism does need to be water-friendly.

Some institutions follow open book examinations.

What are its advantages?
Do you think that exams should be memory-based?
When it comes examinations different institutions follow different methods, and one such method is open book examination. But some are against it and they say examinations should to be memory-based. I think open exam has its own merits, and we need to evaluate a student in all possible ways.
First of all, let me look at the advantages. This method allows students access to books at the time of examination. The primary advantage is that it requires the student to understand the question in such a way that he is able to find out answer to it referring to a book or many books in the given time. Secondly, it encourages self study because the institution may be giving them only basic guidelines as to cover the areas of a particular subject or paper. Thirdly, the examiners have the freedom to raise any question in the exam, and the students can expect to face them too. These are some of the advantages.

Coming to should exams be memory-based, I would argue that it need not be only memory based. The reasons are that memorizing does not work in today’s performance requirements, and those who are able to memories huge amount of information are book worms. And education as we all know needs to give a student varying opportunities to put him or her to test. Testing the memory is one of them, not all. Further more, when students are required to be tested for other skills like time management, problem solving, reasoning and multi-tasting in exam conditions, they become competitive and industry-friendly.

The pointers make me conclude that all examinations, including open book examinations, have their own merits and demerits. However, restricting exams as some exercise that tests a student’s memorizing skill is not a good idea. Rather exams need to evaluate a student in as many ways as there are skills and potentials.

Consumer fests, trade fairs and shopping festivals are regularly being conducted in third world nations, and their frequency is increasing as days pass by, and these events are said to be doing both good and harm to the society. What advantages people enjoy out of these events?Do you think their advantages outweigh the disadvantages?Commercial events promoting sales of services and products are very common in poor nations and it is a fact that their frequency is increasing. However, these events have both positive and negative benefits to a given society. If we look at the advantages of these commercial exercises, there are several. Primarily, these events offer great opportunities for the consumers by way of education on products and services. For example, newly arrived and arriving products and services are displayed in such events, and people come to know about them in detail. And it helps them make wise purchase decisions. Secondly, such events are avenues for employment. Many youngsters work at such fairs. Thirdly, it promotes sales and the same, in turn, brings in revenue to the State.
On the other side of the coin, there are a few hard facts which are not that encouraging. Firstly, these events encourage people to buy things they do not actually need. Secondly, these events pressurize the people in such a way that they develop a tendency to pick a use-and-throw culture which is really harmful to the well being of the people and environment. Thirdly, trade fairs and similar promotional activities sell out products and services which are either outdated or at times, they are on the way out. This creates a lot of waste in the surroundings, and waste management is a huge problem these days.

Therefore, the above points make me conclude that, these days, trade events are pressurizing the people and environment alike, and it is obvious that their advantages hardly outweigh the disadvantages. People need to be wise enough when it comes to purchases at such events.

Some people argue that exorbitant taxes should be levied on those individuals and organizations that resort to unhealthy environmental practices. However, there is another view that taxes may turn out to be an easy way out for those rich ones and they may take it as an opportunity.

How feasible is taxing as a deterrent against damaging environmental practices?
How genuine is the second view in your opinion?

Environmental concerns are mounting, and as a result many people suggest that taxing those erring people heavily could act as a deterrent. Though it is true to some extent, the very concept may boomerang if the rich in the society find it comfortable to pay tax and go scot-free.

When it comes to the feasibility, it may be said that a common tax on luxury goods plus an environment-management tax are possible options, because unless there is some control over people who are callous towards the mounting environmental concerns, things would go far beyond human reach and life on earth would be impossible sooner than later. Besides, since tax regime is more or less accepted as part of any market system, exorbitant tax on damaging environmental practices could be implemented without much fuss. It will work as a deterrent to a greater extent.

Coming to the second view, there is a possibility that erring individuals and organizations may take it as a way out for their wayward environmental attitudes. This concern is genuine in more than one count. Firstly, the well off in the society are ready to pay anything to make their life easier and more comfortable. So are those profit-driven marketers and manufactures. They may think that paying tax is much more worth it than running after environmental certifications and compliances. This loophole needs to be plugged.

To conclude it, it may be said that confirming to certain environmental standards needs to be the personal responsibility of everyone. And taxing and punitive measures have their own limitations when they are pitted against human interest and will.

Tourism is a platform on which distance and diversity work as instruments that promotes unity and understanding among people - irrespective of their being what they are and where they are from.

· How far are you going to endorse this statement?

Tourism has always been a strong force that has promoted cooperation and understanding among the populace for ages. What ever is the tourism a place promotes, the force behind it has always been distance and diversity. This is what is going on today too. That is what I feel.

Distance and diversity has always fascinated man. It is human’s inherent interest in experiencing the unknown and distant that has made tourism an every green attraction. In this context, it is relevant to note that man and his surroundings have always forced him to go beyond whatever is his, and pursue the differences and diversity off and on. Over the years, this tendency has increased thanks to the developments in all realms of tourism. Now it is huge force to reckon with.

This force in no way second to any force that is able to foster relations, strengthen economies and derive understanding between nations. When people interact by way of tourism, there are possibilities for knowing each other and sharing their similar interests, and comparing the contrasting their dissimilar ones. This leads to understanding and unity across world. For example, it is tourism that makes people understand that human life is a unified whole, and interdependence, innate diversities and their being distant are the things that make life more worth living.

In short, tourism is a common venue for all people from across the world to showcase, share and benefit each other from one another’s. Needless to say, this exercise is facilitated by distance and diversity. I think this is going to stay.

Better teacher-student understanding and student-friendly academic ambience will be able to remove corporal punishment from schools for ever.

How far do you agree or disagree with this?

There is saying: “spare the rode and spoil the child”. But studies show that sparing the rod may save a child, not spoil one. Since this finding goes exactly in line with the idea that teacher-student-friendly academic milieu will spare the rod for ever, I for one stand for such a student-friendly school.

Corporal punishment as a correction aid in schools had been in practice for long. But now there is a great shift in people’s attitude towards it, and there are not many takers for this. Great many people believe that punishing children is nothing short of what we call ‘crime against humanity’.

In this context, I would like to state that no punishment is able to make any substantial change in a student, but he or she happens to undergo great strain, stress and humiliation. This in turn makes one suffer from it all throughout one’s life. For example, there are case studies that show that a number of criminals had a history punishment at schools.

On the other hand, if there is student-friendly academic atmosphere, children of any make may comply, and such an amicable learning platform is bound to make far reaching changes in their life in terms of performance, character and attitude. I believe that these are the very factors that make a student successful in life. A rode should not stand on their way.

Concluding it, I find it right to say that punishing children is against their will and personal freedom, and it is to be discouraged at any cost. Let’s spare the rod and save all children who behave the way children should.

Ecological benefit is taken by ecologists as a viable option to maintain green cover. But there is an argument that this will halt growth as the benefit offered may not be at par with the production, if the land is used differently.

Discuss both the views and say what you feel about the concept
.
Ecological benefit: an allowance paid to those landowners who have some measures of green cover and are ready to keep it in tact for the well-being of the planet.
Visit. www.jpsukham.blogspot.com

Speedy carbon recycling is the need of the hour, and ecologists find ecological benefit as a feasible option. But the concern that it would slow down growth is not unfounded. I feel that ecological benefit is to be promoted.

It is the talk of the world that our Planet needs to be protected from the perils of carbon. Since green cover is the only solution, ecologists are of the view that the existing green needs to be kept meet the challenges. Naturally, there is need for individual participation. This, in turn, demands government support. If governments can meet the expectations of people who have their own green cover, they would keep it for the well being of the world. So offering decent ecological benefits to individuals would help a lot in making the Planet breathe easy.

However, mere green coven maintenance wouldn’t meet the needs of the world population. The concern that it would slowdown growth needs to be addressed. Today, humans are much better placed with efficient technologies to be applied in agriculture to augment production, and there are research and development options to meet the rising needs of man, and finally, humans themselves can control population. This will keep his needs controlled, and the Planet may be at ease to keep the population fed well.

Looking at both the views, it is right to conclude that future of the Planet lies in the hands of every individual, and uniform participation alone would make a difference in carbon management. Ecological benefit sounds so excellent a concept to me.

Many people feel that development is likely to erode the cultural values of a place no matter where the development takes place.

How far do you agree or disagree with this?
Prove your points with examples taken from your life or surroundings.

Since change is natural and development is but change, the possibility for change in cultural values too is possible in today’s fast paced world. It is true to a great extent that, irrespective of place and time, development changes values.

To begin with, change is quiet human and it is humans’ inherent urge to change from what is today that has made them stand where they are standing now. Obviously, a change is not possible without touching the things around whether it is physical or cultural or even spiritual.

Let me cite an example to prove my point. In the past people attached a lot of sentiments with personal and family visits. People used to complain of if the frequency is far beyond their expectations. But now, thanks to development is communication and fast paced life, people are happy the way they are. No matter they meet face to face or visit each other’s family. It did have some cultural value, we cannot help it though.

However, there a few cultural values that resist change even if the force of development is much stronger. For example, many people are not ready to compromise on their personal values like truthfulness, helping mentality, family characteristics. But their number is negligible small. Barring such a small lot, everything influenced by development. Eroding social values is a bit disturbing though.

In short, it is right to conclude that development is bound to change established values greatly today. However, we cannot ignore the fact that human life per se has become much better. At least people have developed such a culture of change and development.

Outright banning of production is the only way out to remove the menace caused by disposable plastic products from the face of the Planet.

How feasible is this idea in your opinion?
What suggestions do you have to discourage plastic?

Disposable plastic has been wrecking havoc on the environment and the need for controlling its use is very high. However, a blanket ban on its production does not sound feasible on many counts. There are several other ways to manage it.

Over the years, disposable plastic has been part of human life for long and it is almost inevitable. However the fact is that it is all at the cost of the very environment we all live in. Unfortunately, a blanket ban does not sound feasible to me because thousands of people are working in it, private players have great stakes in it, and the tax revenue cannot be undermined either. In such a scenario, an outright ban should give way to other way outs.

To my mind, firstly, people need to shun this stuff from their life in a phased manner. For example, carrying cotton bags at the time of shopping is a good idea. If everyone does it, plastic carry bag industry will find its door all by itself. So are the other products like containers, cups, plates, spoons, wraps and covers. Secondly, we may monitor the quality of plastic being manufactured. Thirdly, we can impose a freeze on starting new plastic industries. Finally, let us stop demanding for it. When demand dies so does production.

In short, the onus lies in us all. If we are aware and able, we can do away with disposable plastic. Here it is worth adding that we are too late to impose a ban on production. Rather we may bar these products from our life for good.

Human relations have been undergoing great changes over the years, and there are several factors that contribute to it.

What changes do you see today compared to yester years?
Look at those major factors that effect these changes?

Change is the order of the day. Virtually, there is nothing that does not change. So is the case with human relations, especially at a time when humans are going through fast paced developments. The factors that make these changes are many.

The most important change that has happened in human relation is the absence of warmth and intimacy people of all walks of life used to have before. There was a time when people took great pleasure in meeting others. Now such relations hardly exist.

Let me find another area where we find relations dwindle. The way younger generation looks at the older ones has totally changed. Older generation is being dumped as wastes. For example, in our culture parents used to have great control over their children, but now it is children who call the shots. Things have changed a lot, and so are human relations.

What are those factors by the way? Firstly, I think, the world is too wonderful to be spent sticking to the so-called relations. People are highly ambitious, and they find no reason why they should worry about relations. Secondly, life has become so fast and people are after their dreams. For example, highly educated children may find it worthwhile sending their parents to an old home. Here what happens is opportunity as a factor rules over relations as an obligation.

In short, we cannot do without change. But we have to understand that the forces that make changes in our relations can be managed to some extent if we wish so. Unfortunately, the ones who try to do so are very small in number.

Parents, who fail to send their children to school even when education is given free of cost and as right of every child, are doing more harm to their society and nation than to their children and themselves.

How far can you agree or disagree with this?

Who does not know that educating children is extremely important? But many parents fail to do it, all the educational facilities notwithstanding. I feel that such parents do more harm in several different ways, including harm to society and nation.

A child being properly educated is a great asset to his/family, society and nation in many more ways than one. This is what I feel. Because it impossible to predict which child would turn out to be what. What ever that is, it is education that makes it possible. In case, parents fail to send their children to schools on what ever grounds, it not only harms the child and his/her future prospects, but there is a matter of social and national loss. For example, a poorly educated child is an eye sore in many counts.

Let me explain it. Poorly educated children are bound to grow up like other children, and there will come up to become adults and parents. Obviously, they would be poor parents. The children they beget cannot be healthier, and nor are they going to be educated better. What happens is a cyclic action. This will lead to a set of permanent poor in society. Is a poorly educated child not a loss to family, society and nation? So the onus lies on parents’ shoulders. They should ensure that their children go to school at any cost.

In short, it is right say if parents fail to abide by their duty of sending their children to school, there will be personal, familial, social and national loss. The latter ones are more harmful than the former ones. A nation cannot afford to be called poor for long.

Education that does not foster civic consciousness among students is in all means an incomplete education, all the other skills and knowledge it fosters notwithstanding.

How right or wrong is this perception in your opinion?

Instilling civic consciousness needs to be the most important component of any education. That is what I feel about it, and I cannot but agree to the view that an education that does not do it is incomplete.

Education as such, in my opinion, is to make an individual lead a civilized, productive and meaningful life. If we look at the three conditions, ‘civilized’ comes first. In this context, being educated in some way is one thing and being civilized in its true sense of the term is just another. Here comes the role of civic consciousness. An educated person needs to have enough civic consciousness to be able to lead a civilized life. For example, switching a light off when not in use is a sign of civic consciousness; so is the case with keeping one’s surroundings clean.

On the other hand, if a stream of education happens to foster all other skills and knowledge, but fails to develop a sense of civic consciousness, what ever education that may be, it will be incomplete. For example, let us take the case of an educated person. She or she is not ready to behave well on a mass transport system or find it just alright to spit right on the road he or she walks on. What ever qualification such a person sports up his or her collar is absolutely incomplete.

To conclude it, it is right to say that civic consciousness is what makes a person lead a life worth living one with others. Being a social animal everyone needs to lay great stress on this factor while they get their children or themselves educated.

Though modern communication tools are said to be able to keep people closer, there is a view that people these days are much more distant from one another than they used to be.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?

How distant or close are people from one another these days thanks to the innovations in communication technology? Though opinions differ, what I feel is that people are not so closer, but they remain much more connected than ever before.

Communication tools these days help people to remain connected. This does not mean that they are closer than ever before. Being connect and being closer are two different things. What happens now is that these tools offer people enormous possibilities to be away from one another. At the same time, it is possible for people to get an impression that they remain closer. This is a feeling created out of their being able to be connected one another through different modes of communication. For example, almost all people use either a mobile or a community platform like blog or facebook to be online.

All these possibilities notwithstanding, the fact remains that people these days are not so close as they used to be. Today everything is matter of fact and mechanical. The very social activities like periodic meetings at a place, family visits, periodic gathering of like-minded people at special occasions, and even personal invitations for family and cultural gatherings are being responded impersonally. All thanks to modern communication tools. For example, how many of us are able to meet our friends and family friends today as often as we used to?

In short, technology is for man’s good, and man is able to identify that fact too. So, we all need to harness the possibilities communications tools offer. Why are we more distant today from one another? We happen to be tools in the hands of technology, not the other way round.

Bar graph on number of mobiles and landlines per 100 people in 7 countries

The bar graph describes data on mobile and landline density per 100 people in seven selected countries.

It is obvious that mobile phones are more popular than landlines. Let us look at the figures. In Denmark, UK, Sweden and Italy, number of mobile phones per hundred people remains between 70 and 80. But their corresponding figures for landline are much lesser, except for Denmark where landline is more popular than mobiles. The figures of UK, Sweden and Italy go like almost 55, 65 and 45 per hundred people.

Now let’s look at the numbers of Canada, US and Germany. In Canada and US the landline density is almost two times more than mobile density, 65 and 35, whereas in the US the popularity of mobile is comparatively less than landline, the figures are nearly 50 and above 65/100. And finally the numbers of Germany are 70 and 60 mobiles and landlines respectively.
In conclusion, it seems that mobile phone use is higher in Europe than in North America. That ends the report.

At a time when the need for wood as raw material for domestic and industrial purposes is increasing alarmingly, some people feel that promoting plastic as alternative to wood is a feasible idea.

How good or bad is this idea in your opinion?

The need for wood as a raw material is high. However, the importance trees cannot be overlooked either in these carbon intensive days. In such a scenario, I think, it is a good idea to promote quality plastic, of course with certain conditions.

To begin with, quality plastic is highly durable, recyclable, cost-effective and easily manageable. For example, furnishing and fittings made of plastic last for a life time, and plastic saves a lot of time, energy and money by way of mass manufacturing, easy movement and cheaper price.

Another point is that, if it is accepted world over, industrial felling can be reduced greatly and the Planet will be able to breathe easy by way of greater green cover, carbon recycling and falling mercury levels. For example, green cover loss is caused more by industrial felling than by development. If this could be minimized, planet would be a better place to be in.

However, we need to put forth some conditions if plastic is to replace wood. Firstly, I think, it is mandatory for all nations that intend to promote plastic to have permanent recycling system in place. Secondly, there should not be any compromise on the provision that only durable, recyclable products are made. And, finally, there needs stringent laws governing quality standards.

Therefore, it may be concluded that there is not going to be any fall in man’s need for raw materials. But the need for keeping trees is higher too. In such a state of affairs, plastic can do great service to mankind, if wisely managed. This write up proves it.

Gender parity in healthcare is more important than ensuring gender parity in education.

· To what extent do you agree or disagree with this?

Health is wealth or knowledge is wealth? Opinions differ of course. But, when it comes to gender parity in these two areas, I would agree with the view that it is better gender health that matters more than better gender parity in education.

Why I support this view is because health takes care of everything else, even gender parity in education. An educated community of males and females may be able to lead their life the way they like. But their healthy status is what makes them sustain in life so that they can continue living their lives. For example, a highly education female and a male may be able to find means for their life as they enjoy parity in education. What if one of them is not enjoying parity in healthcare? All the qualifications notwithstanding, he or she may not be successful in life.

Coming to gender parity in education, I would like to argue that, though evenly educated great number of females are tend to be leading low key lives due to their preoccupations with culture, community and religious implications. A good number of them are not able, in many cultures, to keep that parity in real terms. But, if there is better parity in healthcare, they would be able to lead healthy lives in many more ways than one, other than the one that education offers. So, I would say gender parity in healthcare is wealth, and education is a means to that end.

In short, my point is that uniform healthcare is more important than uniform education. The above inferences prove the same too. Anyway gender parity in different dimensions of life is of perennial significance.

While conventional games were physically, socially and intellectually charging, new generation games are found to be the other way round; making participants passive and enervating.

· To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?

Games of olden times had many dimensions; social, physical and so on. Such games, naturally, fostered many faculties in several different ways. However, what we have today in the name of games, to a greater extent, are not so involving as to make the participants any better.

The roles games play in the mind and body of children are decisive. A game can either foster or spoil their faculties depending on the nature of the games. Fortunately, children of the past had several such physically, socially and intellectually involving crude games. For example, in our culture, there used to be many country games like throw ball, hide and seek, treasure hunt, chase and catch etc. These games involved group of children and they had been able to pick up better physical health, intellectual acumen and socializing skills, to mention a few, by playing such games.

On the other hand, the games children play today are less involving and more isolating? Primarily, most of such games are individual games or maximum for pairs. Secondly, today, it is all supported by technology and children happen to use many gadget and devices which are more programmed than intellectually charging. For example, there are video games of all types, snake and ladder and the like. However, there are a few games like scrabble, jigsaw and crossword puzzles which are some way able to benefit children.

In short, I don’t think, there is much disagreement on the view that older games were more involving and encouraging, and children picked up many skills and faculties. But today, barring a few games, most of the activities children do in the name of play are less involving and rarely fostering.

Keeping female children and women healthy is the best thing a society can do for the betterment not only of its present generations but also for all the generations to come.

· To what extent can you support this view?
· Do you think that gender parity in healthcare is not needed?

Not many, including myself, would oppose the view that the health of female children and women is of greater importance than anything else for today and tomorrow’s generation. But the fact remains that gender parity in healthcare is needed as much, too.

My first argument in favour of this is that it is the females’ welfare that makes social welfare. Let me make it clear that, from time immemorial, it is women who have been keeping the health status of the family intact. Such families are able to beget healthy children, both male and female. Obviously, such children would constitute a healthy generation in the days to come. For example, a healthy female will become a healthy wife, a mother and, above all, a caring home maker. So female health is what makes the real difference in social health.

However, gender parity in healthcare is crucial as well. This is mandatory for general social welfare. Health indices of a given society are calculated in terms of the health status enjoyed by both the genders. Obviously, we cannot ignore the health of males. For example, if male children and men are not healthy enough, there is going to be a weaker generation of males. All these facts notwithstanding, much hope needs to be pinned up on the health status of female children and women. This is more a matter of existential health than individual or social health.

Looking at both the views, it is right to conclude that the health of women and children, male and female, is of greater significance, and that is the best a society can do to itself. It does not mean that gender parity in healthcare is of no use. It deserves its due, too.

Nations around the world show great interest in hosting international events of sports and games and this tendency is found to be more in poor nations than in the rich.

What are the factors that promote world economies to go after such events?
Why are poor nations more interested than the rich?

Competing for playing host of international sports extravaganzas is nothing new. When it comes to the factors that encourage all nations to do so too, there is not much difference either. However, poor nations have some special interests in such gala events.

Coming to the common factors that make all nations go for it, the primary thing, in think, is the opportunity such events offer. Chances for foreign currency inflow, international market exposure and development, augmenting of infrastructure and so on do come everyday. Above all, cutting a media image across the world is not every nation’s cup of tea. For example, China was able to invite the envy of super powers when it spectacularly hosted Olympics last time. Actually, China was getting a golden chance to make the world understand that developing nations too can hold such events.

Obviously, like China, all so called developing economies want to strike a cord in the international power platforms. Naturally, international events are right occasions to do it. Coming to the increasing tendency shown by poor nations, I think, apart from those common factors, primarily, these nations need to prove that they are as able as the rest of the world. Secondly, these nations take it as an opportunity to achieve growth in the shortest possible time. For example, the capital city of India, New Delhi, is witnessing unprecedented development in infrastructure in the wake of Common Wealth games. And the whole world is anxiously looking at India. Is it not clear why poor nations compete?

In short, international sports events are opportunities for all nations. However, poor nations try to shoulder such a huge responsibility because they need to prove the point that they are not second to any one, developed or developing.

Though health is taken to be the force behind the wealth of a nation, in today’s knowledge-driven economies, it is education that makes a nation wealthy.

How do you look at these propositions?

Is it health or education that makes a nation healthy? Opinions differ much more today than it was before because it is the times of knowledge economies. However, the fact remains that it is health that is the ultimate wealth of a nation. That is what I feel.

A healthy population is instrumental to the wealth of a nation in many counts. First of all, when citizens are healthy enough, they are likely to be knowledgeable and productive by way of what we call a healthy life. It is healthy life that makes a person everything else. Let me cite example of a nuclear family which is not healthy but highly educated. And their knowledge is their wealth in more ways than one. But when it comes to converting that knowledge into wealth, what comes first is health. So health is the key to wealth.

When it comes to knowledge-driven economies of these times, there are innumerable openings for people to make great differences in their life, and their nation’s health, by exploiting knowledge they gain out of education of all types. Yes, it is true to some extent, especially when people have opportunities to get informed and thereby empowered in financial terms. This is more so when there is not much physical effort involved in getting informed by education. This proposition is more fitting to today’s special circumstances. But, ultimately, it is health that holds the key.

To conclude it, I would like to say that knowledge is able to make a nation wealthy these days, but that ability hinges more on people’s health than on anything else. In my opinion, health is wealth and knowledge is a means to wealth.

This table is the result of a survey conducted on people of different age groups of Someland to find out how many hours they spend on six different leisure activities a year.
To begin report, watching TV/video is the most popular leisure activity among all age groups. While teens spare 1200 hrs, people in their 70s and above find 1100 hours. The corresponding figures for those in their 20s and 60s are same, 700. Those ones in their 30s, 40s, 50s find 400, 500, 600 hours respectively.
Cinema is liked most by teens who spend 100 hours. That is 12 times less than what they set aside for Watching TV/Video. All other age groups’ figures remained between 75 and 25 hrs.
Socializing with four or less people is liked most by people in their 30s, 300 hours. But as people grow older, the time they spare for this goes down like 250, 200 etc. The same way, younger age groups spare 150 hrs for this. However, for socializing with four or more people, these two age groups utilize more than two times that number, 350 hours. But the following age groups spend no more than 50 hrs.
Next is group exercise. It is again teens who like it most by sparing 450 hours. This figure goes down as age advances. When people are in their 50s, the figure comes to seven times less than what teenagers spend for it. Finally, individual exercise is not so popular among teens. They find one third of the time they spare for groups exercise. But people in their 30s and 40s utilize 200 hours each.
In summary, it can be said there is a close relation between age groups, types and leisure and number of leisure hours.
