Today, professional are compelled to choose from two options: one that offers more free time and fewer benefits, and the other that offers less free time and more benefits.

What are the major advantages these two options offer?

Today, all professionals enjoy great career choices thanks to developments. However, coming to their working hours and remuneration, there are only two options: more free time and fewer benefits or the other way round. Obviously, these two options offer them many advantages. 40 words

Those who go for the first option enjoy the following advantages. The greatest one is that they have a profession of their choice and enough free time. This free time enables them to lead a healthy personal, social and family life. Secondly, it keeps them free from occupational hazards: hazards like tension, disturbed sleep patters, irregular eating habits, depression and the like. As a result, they are free from medical bills. And, finally, since their remuneration is smaller, they pick up a need-based lifestyle devoid of all extravaganzas. For them, their profession is part of their life. 95 words

Obviously, the other option is equally advantageous. Basically, such people get great financial security and independence. This makes them enjoy all the privileges that money offers: like material prosperity, social value, and higher standard of living. Secondly, they are able to concentrate more on their profession. This longer time sharpens their professionalism which will help them climb the upper rungs of their career ladder faster. And, finally, they are able to make the most out of time, thereby enjoy extreme personal and professional satisfaction. For them, time is money. 90 words

Looking at the advantages of both the options, it may be concluded that it all depends upon how one looks at one’s profession. Lesser free time or more benefits, or the other way round, it is personal satisfaction that matters most. 40 words

Starting up a career much earlier is taken by some as highly advantageous, whereas there are others who take it the other way round.
Essay 037
• How advantageous or disadvantageous is it in your opinion?

In these times of career opportunities, it is rather easy to say that early career is better. However, this write up makes an attempt to find out what all advantages and disadvantages early career selection offers people today.

Firstly, today, being in the helm of a profession in one’s prime years is taken as a springboard to the upper rungs of a person’s career. For example, he or she who starts up a career early will find faster growth prospects in their twenties itself. Secondly, early financial independence will enable them to support themselves, their family and society at large much early, too. Thirdly, they tend to be go-getters and these people will enjoy great material and social security. This world of survival of the fittest demands such qualities.

All said, let me spare a little space to find out how this idea is going to affect our professionals. Firstly, academic years are the most beautiful times of one’s life. So, when one leaves this space and lands in a world of pressure and responsibilities, there is a little concern. Secondly, there are possibilities for wrong career selection. Realizing the same later and starting up a new career and the like lead to many upheavals in one’s life. And, finally, if everyone starts working with their basic qualifications and ignores higher studies, who is going to take care of research, development and teaching?

Looking at the findings on early career selection, I find it right to say that it is equally positive and negative. Since career and higher studies are matters of one’s attitude, opinions differ from person to person.

Factors that make working environ pleasant: a survey result.

The bar chart breaks up the findings of a survey conducted on two different age groups- 18-30 and 45-60 – to find out factors that make their working environment pleasant.

These factors can be divided into external and internal factors. The internal factors are team spirit, competent boss, respect from colleagues and job satisfaction. The external factors are chance for personal development, job security, promotional prospects and money.

On the internal factors, above 50% in each age groups agreed that team spirit, competent boss and job satisfaction are essential for making their environment pleasant, whereas on the external factors, there are contrasting findings. On the chance for personal development and promotional aspects 80% to 90% of the younger groups were in favour while less than 50% of the older groups thought so. A similar pattern is noted on job security. With regards to money 69% to 70% of both the age groups said it was essential.

In conclusion, the internal factors have similar responses from the two age groups while they had dissimilar opinions on external factors.
Though many organizations show great interest in recruiting women, it is found that great numbers of women jump their jobs much frequently and go for new pastures.

• Try to identify a few reasons that make women leave their jobs often?
• Suggest your own ways to retain women in the workforce.
Ajaypeesdoc

Equal gender participation is common in professional life today as many employers welcome female workforce. However, attrition is found to be common among women. Though many reasons are attributed to it, there are ways to keep them back in the payroll.

Looking at the face of the issue, the prominent reason I find is many women do not get their deserving credit from their employers. This might be due to their being with a male dominant workforce. Secondly, many female employees are reported to be suffering from aggression on their person either directly or impersonally. This harassing is too much for many women. Thirdly, unlike the women of the past, today’s young female professional segment is as aggressive and ambitious as their male counterparts. Therefore, when they come to know that there is not much to be expected from an organization, they simply go practical, and hop out for fresher avenues.

However, let me suggest a few ways to make women stay back for longer years. First thing is that men should realize that women are not second employees, and they deserve what ever males do. Secondly, since women are more biologically and socially challenged than men, they should be given convenient working hours and flexible career options. This will make them meet their personal and professional expectations. And finally, if employers can take women into confidence that there is going to be upper career rungs awaiting them, I am sure more and more women will think twice before they jump their job in hand.

Looking at the factors of female attrition, I find it right to conclude that if women are not given their dues, there will be further attrition in the days to come. Anyway the suggestions made would make great difference in this present state of affairs.

• Three IT majors
• Recruit entry level staff
• Their qualifications and experience needed
• Annual salary offered.

The table here shows how three IT majors - Wipro, Microsoft and IBM - look at qualifications and experience of an entry level job aspirant and the annual salary they offer.

To begin with, Wipro is the only company recruiting candidates with any degree and no experience. It offers on the job training instead. But the annual salary offered is the least compared to other companies, 2-3 hundred thousand Indian rupees. When it comes to Microsoft, the qualification parameters differ greatly. It is open only for science degrees with computer diploma. Besides, the experience requirement is two years. Obviously, there is marked difference in annual pay, 3-4 hundred thousands.

Finally, coming to IBM, it is all in superlatives. It seems to be very particular about qualifications. Here entry level jobs are strictly meant for IT engineering degree holders and the experience required is three years. Needless to say, IBM offers the best remuneration package, 5-6 hundred thousands. It is two times more than what Wipro offers.

Over all, it is right to infer that there is close relation between qualification and experience required and the salary offered by different companies.

Changes in average house prices

This bar graph is on appreciation and depreciation in house prices in five different cities between 1990 and 2002 and the same is compared with 1989 average.

Let us see the figures between the years 1990-995. It is very much obvious that New York (USA), Tokyo (Japan) and London (UK) experienced remarkable depreciation during this period. The figures show that New York had a fall by five percent, and the other two cities had almost same pattern say, by eight percent. On the contrary, coming to Madrid (Spain) and Frankfurt, there was slight appreciation by two and three percent respectively.

A further look at the findings of 1996-2002 shows that, except Tokyo, all four cities went for remarkable hike in house prices. When prices of New York and Madrid were spiralling up by five and four percent respectively, London came to experience the highest rise recording almost 12% which is more than two to three times compared with the figures of New York and Madrid.

And, finally, Frankfurt felt a little spurt like what Madrid had in the previous period, one percent. That is the end of the report. 185

Production and consumption of energy in the US 1950-2000 and 2025
Ajapeesdoc.23.5.011
Here we have a line graph on production and consumption of power in the US from 1950 to 2000, and the projected figures for 2025 also given. Energy is calculated in British Thermal Units (1=1 quadrillion).

In general production and consumption shows an upward trend. In 1950, there was a slight difference, and in the following years, there felt an upward spiral. The figures stood between 25 and 40 units, but in 1975, production touched almost 60 units and consumption stood slightly above the same; the increase is above two-fold.

But, over the years, say between1975-2000, production stood below 60 units, but demand went far above 80, and the difference was offset by imports. This variation continued till 2000 making a huge difference of nearly 30 units. In short, the US witnessed a three to four fold increase in demand and supply of power.

Coming to the projected figures, there will be huge difference in 2025. It may be by the tune of 60 units, from nearly 80 to 140 units.

Concluding the report, it is right to add that the US will have to depend too much on imports to keep its power supply-demand equilibrium in future. 190

Increasing global urban population mix:
Does it get reflected in your place?
Does it benefit both rich and poor?
• Rich and poor urban centres.
• Visible in my place
• Benefit is proportional

The population diaspora experienced in the urban landscapes of rich and poor nations is a natural process. It is getting reflected in my place as well. But, when it comes to whether both the economies benefit from it equally, I tend to say that it is more proportional than equal. 45 words

Let me show how it is seen in my place. My nation, being a developing one, is in the process of change day in and day out. As a result, it depends on resources and expertise from across the world. In research and development, science and technology, education, administration, sports and games, our nation relies on human resources from other economies. Obviously, there are people from other nations staying, visiting and permanently serving our society. Their proportion may be very small, but they are very much there, and the same is reflected in the population of our urban landscapes. 95 words

Is this population mix equally beneficial for all? It is not, I am afraid. Rather, depending upon many factors, benefits may vary. How developed, populated geographically convenient and, above all, how friendly a nation is with the rest of the world are a few of determining factors. For example, the number of Indian students studying in the UK is much higher than their counterparts in India. So is the case with permanent Indian migrants in the UK population. Needless to say, depending upon their proportion and national statuses, benefits of population mix may differ. It can in no way be equal. 100 words

In short, this global population mix in urban centres will remain so in the days to come. As it is unable to offer equal benefits, it is a good idea to appreciate the possibilities it opens up and wisely manage the disparities it may generate. 45

Over emphasis on industrialization is one of the major reasons for the mounting energy crisis. So it is a good idea to observe industrial holidays for some time as to achieve energy supply-demand equilibrium.

Essay 069
• Do you think it is worth a try?
• How can we meet the ever-mounting energy demands?

Energy security is the driving force behind the success of all nations. But of late countries around the world are facing problem with it due to over industrialization. It’s true that industrial holiday is a good idea worth trying though there are many other ways to offset this imbalance.

Though industrial holidays, suspending work for sometime, are being looked at with suspicion as they are likely to halt progress, it is worth a try because there are certain power crazy industries which may be halted for sometime; for example, manufacturing of luxury goods. Though the rich may not be happy with such a move, we can try it in select areas. There are certain industries which do not need to be working all year long. So power could be supplied to industries on a priority basis, and the power so saved could be channeled to meet the demands of other power needy sectors.

Besides this, there are many other ways to maintain energy demand supply equilibrium. Firstly, wise management of available energy. It can be done by cutting down on transmission loss and plugging theft. Secondly, consumers need to be educated about the value of power, and ask them to shun luxuries. And finally, there are enormous renewable energy sources around us like wind, solar and tidal energy. They could be tapped to meet the mounting power demands.

To conclude it, it is true that over industrialization is no good, but we cannot observe industrial holidays much frequently. So there needs to be initiative from all quarters to manage power and make other power sources work for the power grid of the world. Energy security leads to better life.

An activity you liked most when you were a child.
What that was
Who often you did it
Who you did it with
Well, childhood memories make anyone nostalgic.
And I for one liked to doing many things in my childhood.

Since I was born and brought up in a village,
I used to have a lot of interesting activities to pursue,
We children in the past had the fortune of great free time
Especially during summer vacation/s.

And our activities included flying kites, fishing, climbing trees,
hunting birds by using crude weapons like catapults etc.

Among them I liked fishing most.
Because our place had, or I would say, we have
a lot of small streams and tributaries and wetlands
And there is a river too.
These waters were home to many fishes
and we used to spend a lot of time fishing.

We had a rare way of fishing, that is, we used to
Make fishing line and rode all by ourselves,
We made hooks out of safety pins
and we used cotton threat as fishing line.
The most interesting thing was that
we had the habit of keeping caught live fish
in plastic bags and bottles.
Our rustic pleasures did not see the suffering of those poor fishes.

Now, thinking of those carefree times,
I often feel like going back to those good old days once again.
Even now, whenever I find children go fishing,
it is very hard to find such scenes these days though,
I too feel like giving them company.
Well, that is it about the activity
I liked most in my childhood

A website you frequently visit
Name it
How often you visit
Why you like this site

Well, as an educated person,
it is difficult for me to do without visiting websites.
For education, profession and for information
people visit one site or the other almost on a daily basis.

The say way, I also visit some sites.
If I am to mention of a few, I would say, they are
Malayala manoramaonline.com
Search engine google.com
The famous job portal Noukri.com,
website of the Hindu daily etc.www.the hindu.co.in
Among them I like the site of the Hindu daily.

I visit this site daily, and I like it for many reasons.
First of all it is highly user-friendly.
An ordinary person with a little working
knowledge of English and computers
can easily navigate and access all information no time.

Second thing I like most is the design of the site.
It is designed almost like the front page of the Daily itself
With a banner heading on the top
And on the left, there is a list of headings,
they are actually links
Or they can be called navigators
Simply clicking them, we can access news on local,
national international etc.
On the right side of the home page there is a shopping portal,
it is for e-shopping and the same showcases
the latest products and services. We can simply know about their price, availability, specifications, quality etc.
And at the right side corner there is a slot for an online survey, where one contemporary issue will be posted, and the visitors can click on agree or disagree. This helps us express our views.
And finally, there is a ribbon like flash-line, which always carries the latest news items. These are the factors that make me like this site.

A teacher you like most
Who that is
What he taught
Why you like him/her

Yes, well, many teachers have taught me
Over my academic years, and there are male and female
Among them, a like a teacher much more than anyone else.

Actually, he was teaching me mathematics
While I was studying for my tenth standard.
His name was, or I would say, his name is
Thomas Joseph.

He is from my place itself,
and I like him very much for many things
Firstly, he was an excellent teacher.
He had thorough knowledge about his subject.
And he had special knack for keeping the class glued to him.

Secondly, he was an accessible person.
We students never felt scared of him
He was rather a friend than a teacher.

Thirdly, he was so compassionate and sympathetic.
He was always ready to go extra miles to help weak students
He used to conduct special classes after class hours.

I have one more reason to like him because,
He was the one who made me get though
My tenth standard exam, because I was very poor at maths
And he instilled in me some courage and
Confidence, and he made it easy for me to face the exam.

I have fond memories about him, and lately
I came to know that he left our school
And is now working at a school in the
Northern part of Kerala. I like him very much.

These are the things that make him like most.

Speak about the busiest time in your life
When that was
What you did
How you felt

Well, Sir, I would, I have always been busy
With one thing or the other
Say, studying, practicing, doing things I like etc.

Still there was a time in my life
Which I would call, the busiest.

It as in 2005 while I was doing my final year nursing programme
It was the busiest time because of many things.

Primarily, I had to clear couple of pending papers
along with that year’s papers.
Unfortunately, during this period
I had to complete a project work as well.
Altogether, the time and space available
for all these thing was very limited
And needless to say,
I had to keep myself fully occupied

This time of the year is the busy period in every student’s life
Still for me it was the busiest. Preparing, practicing, project writing,
And of course, writing exams one after the other in between.

Frankly speaking, this period taught me a lot of things.
Firstly, I knew the value of time
Secondly, I learnt the art of managing time
And thirdly, it was this period
that has made the biggest difference in my life.
This busiest life gives me great dividends
I am a professional thanks to that busy period.

And I must add that it is really wonderful to be busy
Now, I have the feeling that doing things in time is
A sign of good character, too.

Still, some moments, I mean, happy moments
Have more significance than others.

I have got one such moment in my life.
It was when I came to hear that my brother in law
Got qualified for a fellowship
Granted by the University Grants Commission

It happened last year, and while I was doing my duty
On a Monday, there came a call from his mobile.

Actually, I thought it was an ordinary call,
But the next moment, he told me that he
Cleared the UGC test for fellowship,
and he would get some 10,000 rupees per month
for pursuing his research.

That moment made me extremely happy because
He was very much interested in doing research,
But he had no idea how he was going to fund it.
That moment was extremely pleasant for everyone.

My happiness knew no bounds,
because it was a duel success.
Firstly, it was a personal victory for him
Secondly, that success was making his dream
and our family’s dream come true.

That was the moment that made me happy.
Of course, there are many other moments, though

Something that you would like to change in your life
What that is
When and how
What difference it will make

Well, sir, there are a few things in my life
That I personally feel like changing.
Though it looks difficult, I would like to change it.

The thing is that I am suffering from
poor time management skills.
Actually this problems gives me enough difficulties
In my personal and professional life.

Most of the time, I feel that I don’t have enough time
To do my things. At the same time
I am very much aware that I too have
24 hours like all others do.
So the problem is not with lack of time
But it is poor management of the same.

I wish like to change my attitude to time management
Say, before I fly over to some distant locations.
I know I can do with this habit here,
But In a foreign location, I am sure,
one cannot do without
Proper time management skills

Of course, such a change will make great improvements
in my life, both professional and personal.
More over, I can have great control over things
If I am able to manage my time.

So I would like to change it as fast I can.
But I am very much aware that habits die hard
If there is a will there is a way, I believe so.
So this is what I would like to change in my life.

Great numbers of people are moving into cities from villages, and they happen to live in smaller family units. Not everyone is taking this relocating as a welcome development.

• How do you look at this development?

As cities are increasingly becoming centers of opportunities, rural urban migration happens on a daily basis. This movement leaves people of different makes and potentials in different living conditions; some in smaller family units.

The lures of cities have always been a driving force for people to think of moving out of their village homes. As a matter of fact, people who are skilled and confident will surely get enormous opportunities in cities. Obviously, they will make great differences in their life. For example, they can make a lot of money and their living standards will go higher. Naturally, their children will get better education and related conveniences. This will make the second generation more productive. Therefore, it is right for many to be living in smaller setups with better conveniences.

On the other hand, when great many people, who have been living in spacious and quiet living conditions, happen to be in congested cities, they are likely to face problems. Unless these people are prepared to make the best out of the cities, they will get themselves exposed to innumerable difficulties. For example, the pangs of parting, loss of family values, absence of moral support and regular income, poor living conditions, to mention a few, will put them in abject poverty, insecurity and hopelessness. This is a problem not only for them, but this will put cities under great pressures; the pressures of the displaced.

In short, transition from spacious rural to smaller urban families is a natural development. For some, it is a great possibility, but for some others it is a problem. What I feel is that people cannot do without putting up themselves in smaller family units. These times of change - from bigger to smaller - demand it.

Job hopping declines: Study
This is a download from www.ciliconindia.com

Mumbai: Job-hopping tendencies in the country have declined post the global economic slowdown, in light of huge lay-offs where employees who switched jobs frequently paid the price, an executive search firm has said.

"Now most people do not want to change jobs for the sake of changing, unlike in the past. This is because people who were changing their jobs every 6-9 months were the first to be laid off during the slowdown,".

On an average, since 2009, the proportion of people who are changing jobs cautiously has increased up to 50 per cent, compared to the pre-slowdown period.

"This trend is visible across sectors especially in mid and junior levels". During the slowdown, even as the lay-off rate in India was not that high compared to other nations, sectors like banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), retail, hospitality and IT (to some extent) were the most affected.

On an average, the lay-off rate across sectors during the slowdown was 10-15 percent. "Job-hoppers paid the price of instability. Learning from that, people want to stick to their organisations as long as they can," Before the slowdown, the job market was buoyant and there were plenty of jobs available in every sector, adding, "There was a war for talent, and sectors like IT, telecom, BPO and BFSI saw a high percentage of people changing jobs."

In terms of advantages, job-hopping also did not prove to be as lucrative as people are generally unable to generate incentives for first two quarters and also lose out on long term-benefits in their previous organisations.

"On actual terms, they are not losing percentage of salary hike by sticking to an organization for long. And if we calculate the quantifiable net gain, they do not lose anything by being loyal to their organisations,".
Sticking to an organization, proved as a win-win situation for both an employer and an employee as a new association is usually a painful phase for both sides.

"New people are not able to contribute to the best of their capabilities and, from an organization’s perspective, a company ends up in paying for the hiring cost as well as on induction, technology and development and to integrate a new person into its system".

Employers' reaction is, therefore, positive as they hold and retain people and, in return, usually, employees do not lose out on the benefits. 400 words

The issue of discarded computers and other electronics wastes is not a trivial matter any more. So people all around the world need to make changes as to how they handle these products to help ensure a clean environment for future generations.
Essay 008
• Discuss the issue and suggest a way or two to handle the problem.

With consumers and businesses constantly replacing electronic devices, the volume of abandoned computer and electronic waste is growing alarmingly. So there is pressing need for wiser management of this issue. It is needed for today and tomorrow’s healthy environment.

One of the severest problems the Planet is currently facing is waste, hazardous, harmful and less harmful. Among them, the volume of used and nonfunctioning electronic goods filling up the world’s dumps is growing alarmingly. This is so alarming that the coming generation would find itself caught in the nightmare of diseases and poor living environments. This poor state of affairs is not only harmful to humans, but all the flora and fauna of the world would get affected and life on the Planet would be nearly impossible.

This deadlock needs immediate attention of one and all. How best can the world take care of it? Or, who will bell the cat? What I for one find is that corporate giants, including computer manufacturers such as Apple, IBM, Dell and HP; electronics manufacturers such as Toshiba and Motorola; cellular manufacturers such as Nokia and Verizon, to mention a few, should initiate a combined effort to see that the wastes their products and services generate are responsibly managed. Once they show a feasible way out, the smaller organizations would follow suit.

Winding up the discussion, I find it right to say that all environmental issues are absolutely manmade. Therefore, it is the need of the hour that man himself takes up this issue not only for his immediate wellbeing, but also for the sake of all the generation to come.

Article begins

With consumers and businesses constantly upgrading and replacing electronic equipment, the volume of used and nonfunctioning equipment filling up the nation’s dumps and landfills is growing alarmingly. The Rethink Initiative is hoping to change things before it’s too late.
By Carol Johnson
Every day brings the introduction of an innovative and exciting new technology that will help people do things faster, easier, or more efficiently. The plethora of new products introduced each year is growing by leaps and bounds. But unfortunately, the faster those new products emerge, the faster the outdated ones are ending up discarded in trash heaps.

Technology industry leaders have joined forces with government and environmental organizations to propose new solutions to the challenge of e-waste. Their combined efforts have been labeled the Rethink Initiative. The problem of throwing away outdated equipment is no small matter; hundreds of millions of computers, cell phones, video and stereo equipment, and other electronics either sit on shelves or end up in the garbage all across America every year. The Rethink Initiative hopes to educate and inspire consumers to make smart choices about how to dispose of their outdated equipment responsibly.

The Rethink Initiative is a combined effort between a host of corporate giants, including computer manufacturers such as Apple, IBM, Dell, HP, and Gateway; electronics manufacturers such as Toshiba and Motorola; cellular manufacturers such as Nokia and Verizon; and even retail giants such as Best Buy and Circuit City.

With American consumers and businesses constantly upgrading and replacing to keep up with the endless new advances in productivity, learning, and entertainment, these companies are banding together to provide information, tools, and solutions to make it easy and even profitable for people to find new homes for outdated equipment by responsibly recycling unwanted products.

Some of the organizations involved with the Rethink Initiative offer their own recycling programs. The National Cristina Foundation (www.cristina.org) will match you with groups that need old hardware to provide job training for disabled people, and you get a tax write-off as a result of your donation. CollectiveGood (www.collectivegood.org) will take an old wireless cell phone and in return make a donation to the charity of your choice, from a list of over 300 charities.

The Basel Action Network (www.ban.org) can provide a list of responsible electronics recyclers near you, so you can give old TVs and other electronics to someone who can harvest them for recyclable materials. Apple Computers offers free recycling of old PCs—regardless of their manufacturer—for customers who purchase a new Mac. The company has been named a "Forward Green Leader" by the Sierra Club, being recognized as one of the top ten environmentally progressive companies.

The issue of discarded computers and other electronics is not a trivial matter. People all around the world need to make changes right now in how they handle these products to help ensure a clean environment for future generations.

Well, you’ve just read the article on e waste and the dangers it poses.
When it comes to education, children should have the final say on what they need to study, and, therefore, parents' pressure on children is an unhealthy practice.

• How far do you agree or disagree with this view?

Who should have the last say when it comes to education; parents or children? I am of the opinion that children should be given that privilege. It doesn’t mean parents are not party to it. They need to be healthy facilitators.

Right education is what makes a child become what actually he or she is. This education is better only when the child decides what he or she likes to study. On the other hand, if parents impose decisions on children, there may be compliance and results, but the child will never be successful. For example, every child is born with a talent or two, and children have hundreds of ways to be successful. Identifying one’s way is to be done by children themselves. In this decision-making process, undue parental pressure is nothing but unhealthy.

However, this does not make parents devoid of any role. Rather they need to know that children love their parents more when they (children) are heard than when they are forced. This is more so when it comes to education which is a long process, needing wise decision making. Here comes the role of parents. They may here work as flexible advisors or facilitators. For example, an informed parent can keep his or child informed of the possibilities of a particular stream of education. This may help a child to see whether he or she has a taste for such a stream. So imposing something is unfair and unhealthy.

In short, when it comes to education, parents have to know that, at the end of the day, what makes the biggest difference is the interest of the child not the expectations of the parents. So let children hold the key to their success.
