The ever increasing digital density among children and teenagers is a ploy of market forces aimed at catching them young and thereby making them slaves of technology.
Essay 008
• How far can you support this view?
The mounting digital density among children and teens is a natural development. From a business a point of view, it is a ploy employed to catch children young. However, keeping them slaves of technology for ever, in my opinion, is a matter of choice, for man is intelligent enough not to be so.
To begin with, digital service providers face tough competition in the market. The pressure they face is so acute that they cannot do without pushing in their products and services among the younger ones of the market. They are the market tomorrow, and keeping them hooked to technology is of course a market trick. However, we cannot be blind to the fact that the world is going digital every moment. Being part of such a world demands one to be ‘digitaliterate’, let me coin a word.
When it comes to children becoming slaves of digital revolution, my personal opinion is that it is an exaggeration. Yes, children are vulnerable to the lures of technology and they are going to get glued to it. But when children grow up into men and women, they would have the common sense to decide on whether to be a slave of technology or the other way round. Digital density is the order of the day, and it is a welcome development. However, the business aspect of this revolution cannot be done away with.
In short, what we need is an intelligent bridging, especially when some parts of the world remain worried about digital divide. I think digital reach among children would do much towards such a bridging all the market ploys notwithstanding.

Many environmentalists are of the opinion that, if man goes on exploiting the environment the way he does these days, there is going to be what they call ‘ecological overshoot’ (an imbalance between resources being made use of and resources being made available by the Planet) much sooner than later.
• How dangerous is to be facing ecological overshoot?
• How what suggestions can you have so that this environmental threat can be offset?
It is written by Mr. Jacob, one of my students. a 7 plus band write up.
Ecological overshoot is indeed an issue of great concern. It is the need of the hour that we put our heads together to identify a few measures to combat it. This write-up is an attempt to see how dangerous the scene is, and identify a few measures to keep a check on such a scenario. 54
The day humans happen to run out of resources will be a dooms day for sure. It would not be too long that these resources come to an end. A recent study shows that the world’s oil reserves are on the decline faster than ever. And with the stroke of the next century, these reserves would dry up. Obviously, this world would come to a grinding halt. If this is the case just with oil, we can imagine how dangerous it is going to be when other life-saving resources come this state of affairs. 94
However grave the issue looks, a few simple steps can ensure that there is not going to be any 'ecological overshoot'. Using less fuel can go a long way in this respect. This can be achieved by encouraging people to use more of public transport. Besides this, making the masses more aware of this sooner-than-later crisis will keep the world in good stead. Another positive step would be the use of non-conventional sources such as solar, wind, tidal, geothermal etc. Above all, attitude of people towards energy waste also has to be changed. 93
To sum up, 'ecological overshoot' is one of the challenges faced by mankind today. And, if it is not dealt with well, it can have a huge toll on the very existence of humans. But, concerted efforts from all quarters I am sure, can overcome it. It is entirely up to us humans. 53

Five questions on environment management
1.
2.
Though the need for the three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle, is increasingly felt today much more than ever, some people believe that this cannot solve the problems caused by today’s human actions and the resultant environmental problems whereas there are some others who take it the other way round.
• How do you look at these two view points, and put in what you feel about three Rs?
3.
There is a view that a clean environment is possible only if people in general take it as a personal responsibility.
• How far do you agree or disagree with this view?
4.
There is an argument that individuals who are rich enough to buy as much energy as they want should not be allowed to do so because energy is in extreme short supply.
• How far do you agree or disagree with this?
5.
Mismanaging energy should be taken as a crime against humanity and energy conscious industries and individuals need to be given incentives to keep their spirit up.
• Comment on this idea.

There is a view that doctors, medical scientists and diagnostic experts who are in the life saving streams of medical sector should be allowed to continue in their service as long as they are able to continue.
How far do you agree or disagree with this view?
Should some professionals be given extension on retirement age depending on the nature of their service to the community? Though opinions differ, I for one am of the opinion that some professionals in the medical fraternity may be allowed to continue as long as they can.
My primary argument favouring this idea is that brilliant doctors and scientist, who are in the best of their service, are forced to move out of their regular career thanks to uniform retirement age limit. If these professionals are allowed to be in harness, it would be a blessing for the whole humanity. Secondly, thanks to the developments in medical science itself, people there days are health even in their late 60s, especially medical professionals in their life saving area. They need to be exploited for the well being of whole humanity.
However, there should be an excellent screening mechanism to ensure that only the reserving professionals stay back. This may be on the basis of how crucial their medical fields are, the seriousness of research and diagnosis they do and their health status, to mention a few. If this is not taken care of, this provision may backfire when all and sundry may manage themselves to be in service for ages. This would do more harm than good by depriving the young professionals of their due right to serve the community.
The above findings make me conclude that it is a good idea to support the view that life saving professionals need to remain in service ever after their due retirement age. However, the parameters that govern such a system must be foolproof by all means.

Many reasons are attributed to unemployment in general. However, it is argued that digital divide and gender discrimination are the two formidable stumbling blocks on the way of what social scientist call ‘employable-employment’ balance.
Essay 035
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?
It is true that there is imbalance in the number of employable people and the available opportunities. But this dichotomy, in my opinion, could not be attributed greatly to digital or gender divide. Since they are a force to reckon with, it looks hard for me to fully disagree with the view anyway.
Let us look at the common factors that go into what our social scientists call employable-employment imbalance. Primarily it is the size of the population. For example when the number of people who get employable and the number of employment created differ, obviously, there will be unemployment. Secondly, poor quality education, weaker national status, lack of industrialization, haphazard distribution of development between rural and urban areas and the like are the other factors that lead to this imbalance. I think all these reasons are as formidable as gender and digital divide.
For example, digital divide is depriving great number of people of their opportunities. But if we look at the statistics, we can see that digitally qualified people and the number employment created in the digital world do not go in line. That is, there is disparity too. So is the case with gender divide. For example, there is gender preference when private sector, the biggest employment provider, recruits people. Here too, those who suffer from this problem are negligibly small. And studies show that in many organization women outnumber men.
In short, gender and digital divide are two blocks, like any other impediment that stands on the way of employment employable balance. Therefore, it is difficult agree with the view that they are in any way formidable or whatever.

E. tutoring and e. learning is becoming increasingly popular all over the world. This virtual learning platform offers great advantages for tutors and learners alike.
Essay 099
· Do you think its advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
E. tutoring and E. learning are very common today. This is mainly due to the mounting popularity of the Internet as an interactive medium. Obviously, both tutors and learners reap benefits, and in my opinion, it offers enough advantages to outweigh the disadvantages.
Online tutoring and learning offers several advantages for both the parties involved. Primary advantage is that it works 24/7 and round the year. Tutors and students can benefit each other by way of interaction, education and value addition. Secondly, it is a virtual learning experience as tutors could be from different nations, and so could students be. It is a kind of exchange. Thirdly, this is a great employment provider. Educated, employed and even retirees could make use of their free time and earn a lot of money. It is a win-win for all in more ways than one.
There are certain disadvantages for E. education though. Firstly, it is the limited possibilities for tutor-leaner face-to-face. This may dampen the spirit of learning. Secondly, accountability factor may be absent because the authenticity or veracity of information imparted may not be reliable. This may harm students and their performance. Thirdly, we cannot rule out the inconveniences it is likely to cause with regard to geographical positioning of both the students and tutors. There could be a few more pitfalls anyway.
Looking at the positives of the concept, it may be concluded that negatives are not strong enough to counter the positives. It is all a matter of how we make use of it. What is there that does not have an unpleasant side? E. education is no exception.

IELTS ACADEMIC READING TEST TUTORIAL
This is a NET download. i have no right over this. It is a property of someone who keeps it accessible for all.
I make it available to my viewes. I have no claims over this material
The IELTS Academic Reading Test has 3 sections. You have 60 minutes to complete the test. There is NO extra time at the end of the test to transfer your answers to the answer paper (you get 10 extra minutes in the listening test only); your answers must be on the answer paper at the end of the 60 minutes. The test has 40 questions based on a series of 3 texts. The total length of all the texts put together will be between 2000 and 2750 words. As in all the different parts of IELTS, the Academic Reading Test gets progressively harder through the paper.
In each section of the Academic Reading Test there will be 1 text with 13 or maybe 14 questions to answer in 2 or 3 sets of differing formats. We will look at the types of question that you will meet later. The texts will come from magazines, books and journals and are written for general interest or for an academic though non-specialist reader. At least one text will contain a logical argument. One text may contain non-verbal materials such as a diagram, graph or illustration. If there are any words or terms of a specialist technical nature which candidates would not be expected to know, then a short glossary will be provided.
Marking
There are 40 questions in the IELTS Academic Reading Test and 1 mark is awarded for each correct answer. There are no half marks. Your final mark out of 40 is then converted to a band from 1 - 9 using a converting table and this band is then averaged with the other 3 parts of the test to give your final IELTS band. Band scores for the reading test and the final band are given as a whole band or a half band. The converting table used to change your mark out of 40 to the band out of 9 changes with every test. However, below you can see a rough guide that you can use to assess your practice. There is no guarantee that you will perform the same in the real test itself as the test converters vary with each test, but it can be a guide to your progress.

Some Tips for the IELTS Academic Reading Test
Don't spend too long on a single question as that will lose you time for answering questions that could be easier for you. Sometimes, leaving a question and coming back later can help you answer it, too. Leave any questions that you have spent too long on, and come back at the end of the test if you have time. Sometimes, if the question has a yes/no/not given answer, the answer you are looking for does not exist as it could be a not given. Be aware so you don't waste time looking for something that isn't there.
Read the questions and instructions so you don't make a silly mistake. For example, people often will mix the yes/no answers with the true/false answers and write yes as an answer instead of true or vice versa. Strictly speaking you are wrong although you have understood the question and answer.
If the question asks for one answer then give one answer. Giving two is wrong as it asks for one and you will be marked wrong. The type of question where this could happen would be: Give one example of... Writing two examples, to show you really understand, is wrong.
If the question asks for no more than 3 words, use no more than 3 words. Writing 4 words or more is wrong. You won't be asked to do it in 3 words or less unless it is possible. S so don't worry; it can always be done.
One area that students don't like is that, in the reading test, good grammar and spelling are important. The grammar part is not as important as you can't make many grammar errors in 3 words (the maximum you use in the reading test) but, if you spell something wrong, it will be marked as wrong. People think, quite rightly in my opinion, that the reading should test whether you understand what you read and not how you spell something but these are the rules. So, be careful about your spelling!
One constant question students ask is whether to read the questions first and then read the passage or read the passage first and then the questions. It depends on a number of variables. It can depend on the types of question and how difficult the questions are. It can depend on how good and fast a reader you are. It can depend on the length of the text and how much time you have. Let's look at these variables.
If the question type is difficult and asking something which is hard to answer then reading the text first can help. Just a quick read through using a technique called skimming can give you the knowledge of the text that will help you find the answer more easily. If you are a good, fast reader, then you can read the text quickly, getting good knowledge of the contents without using up too much precious time. This can help you answer the questions better.
If the texts are short then it doesn't take long to quickly read through them. On the other hand, if the texts are short it is easier to find the answers so you may not have to waste time reading the texts to find the answers quickly, especially if time is short.
If time is short then it doesn't matter how complex or long the texts are. You need to get some answers on the answer sheet as quickly as possible. So, you can see that there is not one answer to the problem of whether to read the texts or questions first. What I tell students is to experiment in your practice and see what suits you for the different types of question in different situations. As usual practising your techniques is the key.
Time management is an important thing to be aware of. You have a number of texts to read and 40 questions to answer in 1 hour. If you spend to long on one part, you may find that you have not enough time to finish all the questions and some of those questions could be ones that you could answer quite easily. Don't spend too long on a difficult answer but also keep an eye on the clock.
It's a good idea to have your watch or a small clock on your desk so you know exactly how long you have left in the test at any given time. In addition to this, keep control on how long you spend on each section. Remember the test gets more difficult as it goes on so you will probably need more time for the questions at the end than for those at the start.

Some people believe that four-day-week with longer working hours would make employees enjoy life and, as a result, perform better when they are at work. But there are people who think that lesser working days would do more harm than good.
Essay 003
Look at both the views and express your opinion on them.
Does four-day week make people put in more? Opinions differ of course. But not many would oppose the idea that more free time lets employees enjoy a lot of family time. What I feel is that humans, being basically lazy, may take it as an opportunity to be complacent.
First of all, let me see how employees are going to take four-day week concept. Four working days and three holidays a week would look really great because there is enough room for family time, professional, personal and social times. This makes employees enjoy greater work life balance. This will of course pay them great dividends. This improved working environment may make some employees put in more and contribute better in terms of service. This extra energy may take the production graph scale new highs.
But, from an employer’s point of view, there is a little concern because paying for seven days and getting three days’ service back may not make great business sense. However rejuvenated an employee may return to work after three days’ break, he or she may take a day to get over the holiday blues. This would leave the employer with only three days a week, with the third day being a weekender. Coupled with this is humans’ inherent nature of being lazy. So, four-day week may not do much good. Lesser working days make people lazier.
The above findings on four-day week make it clear that fewer number of working days is likely to do more harm than good. So, it is right to say that keeping employees engaged is much better than letting them free for longer days.

Health hazards like tobacco and alcohol products are legally sold by the State and the victims of this abuse are a problem for all societies. So it is argued that it is the job of the State to rehabilitate these addicts as the latter is the primary beneficiary by way of tax.
Essay 058
How far do you agree or disagree with this?
It is a fact that tobacco and alcoholic products are sold legally and many people get addicted to the same. But when it comes to rehabilitating the addicted, it is difficult for the State to do the whole job. However, the State has to provide medical care to its people. First of all, we need to understand that State endorses the sales of these substances because it is a huge source or revenue and the manufacturing and marketing of these products is as old as human habits, and we cannot simply stop it. Secondly, no State is asking its citizens to buy these health hazards. Rather all harmful products carry messages on them warning the user that it is harmful. Still people use them and become addicts. Therefore, the state cannot be held fully responsible for the rehabilitation of substance abuse victims. 85 wordsHowever, we cannot forget the fact that the revenue the government collects is used for the welfare of the people. When it comes to the welfare of the State, it is the welfare of the citizens. So those who are suffering from addiction related ailments need to be given adequate medical care. It may not be complete rehabilitation; rather it is a kind of alleviating the problems of those addicts who, either out of habit or compulsion, contribute much of their earnings in the form of tax to the State. And the State may partly fund general rehabilitation centres, not ones exclusively for addicts.
The above points make me conclude that rehabilitation of addicts is not the sole responsibility of the State alone. Rather people need to be intelligent and thereby stay away from addiction-prone habits and tendencies. No state can fully rehabilitate addicts.

Ecological benefit is taken by ecologists as a viable option to maintain green cover. But there is an argument that this will halt growth as the benefit offered may not be at a par with the production, if the land is used differently.
Discuss both the views and say what you feel about the concept.
Ecological benefit: an allowance paid to those landowners who have some measures of green cover and are ready to keep it in tact for the well-being of the planet.
Speedy carbon recycling is the need of the hour, and ecologists find ecological benefit as a feasible option. But the concern that it would slow down growth is not unfounded. I feel that ecological benefit is to be promoted by all means.
It is the talk of the world that our Planet needs to be protected from the perils of carbon generated by human action. Since green cover is the only solution, ecologists are of the view that the existing green cover is not enough to meet the challenges. Naturally, there is need for individual participation. This, in turn, needs government support. If governments can meet the expectations of people who have their own green cover, people would keep the green cover for the well being of the world. So offering decent ecological benefits to individuals would go a long way in making the world a healthier place to be in.
However, mere green coven maintenance wouldn’t meet the needs of the world population. The concern that it would slowdown growth needs to be address by alternatives especially. Today, humans are much better placed with efficient technologies to be applied in agriculture to augment production, and there are research and development options to meet the rising needs of man, and finally, humans themselves can control population. This will keep his needs controlled, and the Planet may be at ease to keep the population fed.
Looking at both the views, it is right to conclude that future of the Planet lies in the hands of every individual, and uniform participation alone would make a difference in carbon management. Ecological benefit to individuals sounds so excellent a concept in today’s world.

While conventional games were physically, socially and intellectually charging, new generation games are found to be the other way round; making participants passive and enervating.
Essay 014
· To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?
Games of olden times had many dimensions; social, physical and so on. Such games, naturally, fostered many faculties in several different ways. However, what we have today in the name of games, to a greater extent, are not so involving as to make the participants any better.
The roles games play in the mind and body of children are decisive. A game can either foster or spoil their faculties depending on the nature of the games. Fortunately, children of the past had several such physically, socially and intellectually involving games. For example, in our culture, there used to be many country games like throw ball, hide and seek, treasure hunt, chase and catch etc. These games involved group of children and they had been able to pick up better physical health, intellectual acumen and socializing skills by playing such games.
On the other hand, the games children play today are less involving and more isolating? Primarily, most of such games are individual games or maximum for pairs. Secondly, today, it is all supported by technology and children happen to use many gadget and devices which are more programmed than intellectually charging. For example, there are video games of all types, snake and ladder and the like. However, there are a few games like scrabble, jigsaw and crossword puzzles which are some way able to benefit children.
In short, I don’t think there is much disagreement on the view that older games were more involving and encouraging, and children picked up many skills and faculties. But today, barring a few games, most of the activities children do in the name of play are less involving and rarely fostering.

Promoting and protecting the health of women is of greater importance in terms of social welfare not only for the health of present generation but also for all the generations to come.
Essay 009
Substantiate this argument with evidence to support it.
How can we promote and protect the health of women?
Social welfare involves several factors, and most important one among them is the health status of people. In this respect, ensuring women’s health is more important than anything else. This is for today and for tomorrow, too. Of course, there are ways to achieve this goal.
When it comes to its greater importance, primarily, it is women who sustain human life. Naturally, their health plays a pivotal role in giving birth to healthy lives, both boys and girls. Obviously, these boys and girls are what we call future generation. For example, a healthy female child will naturally become a healthy woman, and she in turn continues the process. If we look at it from a social welfare angle, it is again right that women play the most crucial role in managing the health of the family. And healthy families contribute greatly to social welfare.
Obviously, there are ways to sustain women’s health. Health as such involves several factors. It is not simply being free from diseases. So, right and deserving education, enough employment opportunities, food security, affordable medical care, amiable family atmosphere with enough freedom for decision making, problem solving and socializing are some of the contributory factors that make women healthy. Needless to say, there should be enough provision for all these in a society that expects to be healthy today and tomorrow.
Concluding it, I would like to add that sustaining women’s health is the best thing a society or a system of government can do to its present and future welfare. And I am sure the suggestions I have made afore are of some significance.

Since great numbers of people are travelling long distances for their employment needs daily, it is opined that, if people are given employment at convenient locations, both the employers and environment could breathe easy.
Essay 061
· What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of such an arrangement?
Movement of people as part of their employment needs is an environmental concern because it burns a lot of oil and causes pollutions of many types. So posting people at handy locations is an environment-friendly move. There are advantages and disadvantages.
If we look at the major advantages, the first one is that it saves a lot of time, money and resources by way of decreased need for traveling, the expenses thereof and the savings in terms of fuels. This will make the environment breathe easy. Secondly, when people travel shorter distances daily, the whole commuting reduces, thereby reducing pollutions of all types. And finally, the need for having personal cars and similar vehicles will get reduced. As people do need to travel long, the demand for personal vehicles will drastically come down. This is yet another breather for the environment.
However, looking at the other side of the issue, there are certain disadvantages. The primary one is that it is not always possible for organizations either to accommodate all the employable people of a place locally or to find the right mix of people from a particular place to run their shows. Besides, when employers need to expand their operations elsewhere, it is mandatory for them to mobilize people of different skill-sets from one location to the other. Obviously, they have to press for transfers and relocations. This is a practical difficulty of course.
To conclude it, environmentally speaking, the concept of giving convenient workstations to employees is a good idea. But not many employers would go for it as the advantages it offers to them are of minimal value.

Model answer: Rental charges and salaries
The table shows two sets of related information: the relative cost, in pounds, of renting a property with one, two or three bedrooms in three different suburbs of London and an indication of the kind of annual salary you would need to be earning to rent in these areas.Of the three areas mentioned, Notting Hill is the most expensive with weekly rents starting at £375 (salary approximately f 100,000) and rising to £738 per week for a 3-bedroom property. To afford this, you would require a salary in the region of £200,000 per annum.
Alternatively, Fulham is the cheapest area shown with rents ranging from £215 per week for a one bedroom property to £600 per week for a 3-bedroom property. To rent in this area, salaries need to be somewhere between £85,000 and £170,000 depending on the number of bedrooms required. For those able to pay in the middle price range for accommodation, Regent's Park might be a more suitable district.

It is noticeable that for both types of household with children, a higher than average proportion were living in poverty at this time.Older people were generally less likely to be poor, though once again the trend favoured eldery couples (only 4%) rather than single eldery people (6%).Overall the table suggests that households of single adults and those with children were more likely to be living in poverty than those consisting of couples.

Model answer: Oil production capacity in the middle east : 24
The graph shows Oil Production Capacity in millions of barrels per day for selected Gulf countries. There are several features in this graph. The most significant feature is that oil production will increase sharply in almost all the countries shown. Kuwait and Iraq are both expected to double their output between 1990 and 2010, with Kuwait's production rising from 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) in 1990 to 3.8 in 2010. Iran will also increase its output by a slightly smaller amount. After remaining steady at 2.5 million bpd from 1990 to 2000, the UAE's output is expected to approach 4.0 million bpd in 2010. Only Qatar's production is predicted to fall, back to 0.8 million bpd after a slight rise in 2000.However, the greatest increase will be from Saudi Arabia. In 1990, its output capacity at 8.5 million bpd exceeded the combined production of Iran, Iraq and Kuwait. This lead is expected to continue with a 75% increase in production to 14.5 million bpd 2010. In summary, while most of the countries are expected to show increases, Saudi Arabia will maintain and strengthen its position as the major producer.
Model Answer :Leisure time per week gender and employment: 12
The chart shows the number of hours of leisure enjoyed by men and women in a typical week in 1998-9, according to gender and employment status.Among those employed full-time, men on average had fifty hours of leisure, whereas women had approximately thirty-seven hours. There were no figures given for male part-time workers, but female part-timers had forty hours of leisure time, only slightly more than women in full-time employment, perhaps reflecting their work in the home.In the unemployed and retired categories, leisure time showed an increase for both sexes, as might have been expected. Here too, men enjoyed more leisure time over eighty hours, compared with seventy hours for women, perhaps once again reflecting the fact that women spend more time working in the home than men.Lastly, housewives enjoyed approximately fifty-four hours of leisure, on average. There were no figures given for househusbands! Overall, the chart demonstrates that in the categories for which statistics on male leisure time were available, men enjoyed at least ten hours of extra leisure time.

Some people say that faster, cost-effective and universally accessible communication infrastructure has made the world a much better place to be in, whereas there are others who feel that it has made things worse.
Discuss both the views and put in what you feel about it.
We are living in a world of communication explosion where people of all walks of life are able to stay connected 24x7. Obviously, this communication revolution has made the world much better. However, there are a few concerns as well that cannot be ignored.
To begin with, the world ultimately has become a more comfortable place to be in thanks to the explosion in communication infrastructure. Firstly, it is the faster movement of data that makes people work more efficiently, especially businesses and administration machinery. For example, with the arrival of email and its unfathomable possibilities, the whole world has become a network of people sans any borders set either by time or by space.
Secondly, coming to grassroots, people of all walks of life are able to make better living conditions because they are well positioned to tap the potentials of time by converting time into money. For example, universally accessible and affordable mobile phones are used by people to keep their businesses running smooth. There are countless other similar instances, too.
All the instances notwithstanding, we cannot ignore the fact that this development has made the world a little unsafe. For example, communication platforms are widely used by nefarious forces like terrorists and fundamental outfits to make unrest in different parts of the world. The case with those immature people who fall prey to the lures of communication tools is another example.
In short, barring a few discordant notes, globally speaking, communication explosion has made the world a better place in countless ways. Looking at both the sides, what I feel is that it is our responsibility to harness the potentials of communication breakthroughs.
