GRAPH ON THE POPULARITY OF MODES OF TRAVEL TO AND FROM WORK
The graph breaks up data on different modes of transport people of a European city used to travel to and from work in three periods, 1960, 1980 and 2000.
To begin with, in 1960, 20% people traveled by bus. This figure went above 25% in 1980. But, when it was 2000, the percentage came close to 15%. When it comes to car users, in 1960, hardly seven percent people used it. In 1980, it showed more than three times increase, 25%, and in 2000 it went past 35%, recording a seven fold rise.
Coming to bike, its popularity declined over the years. When more than 25% people biked to work in 1960, the corresponding figure for 1980 was 20%. The biggest fall was recorded in the year 2000; hardly seven percent. The percentage of those who walked stood at 35% in 1960. In the following two periods, it stood slightly above 15% and below 10% respectively.
In short, bus had been very popular in all three periods whereas car’s polarity kept on increasing. But walking and biking turned unpopular over time.

Some people say that quality of education needs to be uniform so that all the educated would get employed whereas there is another view that it is so difficult to maintain uniform quality of education owing to many factors.
• Why is it important that there is uniform quality education?
• What stands on the way of quality education for all?
Of late, uniform quality education is demanded for greater employability. However, keeping the same quality across the spectrum is an arduous job. This essay tries to see why a particular standard in education is mandatory, and what all factors that hamper it.
Firstly, the basic purpose of any education is to make one lead a civilized, productive and meaningful life. This purpose is served only if the quality of education received is able to make a person find a living which, in turn, is a highly demanding task. Secondly, uniform growth of a nation is possible only if all the educated people are worth employing. Thirdly, meeting the employability quotient, in today’s private-sector-driven employment scenario, is not a cake walk for any one with substandard education.
For example, today’s employers need people with right knowledge, enough confidence, rare common sense and industry-friendly skills for making their businesses succeed. Obviously, uniform quality education will see that the educated meet their employers’ expectations.
Let me see what stops this quality from happening. The primary thing is quality education is extremely expensive as it is provided mostly by private educational players. Second thing is that no government is in position to observe that this quality is maintained by all education service providers, either private or public. Thirdly, so long as people happen to stay under different socio-economic statuses, it is rather impossible for all to achieve this goal. These are the major factors I am able to identify.
In short, education needs to make all the educated living decent lives. This is possible only if there is uniform quality which, unfortunately, is blocked by a few impediments. Here it is right to add that education sans quality is of no use at all.

An essay by Nimisha
Rising fuel price is a right move to sort out many environmental problems. What do you say?
When it comes to solutions for environmental problems, there are different suggestions. However, in my opinion, increasing the cost of fuel is just one of the minor solutions and it is not going to create any drastic changes. Let me elucidate.
As a matter of fact, more than half of the world’s environmental problems are thanks to the uncontrolled use of fuel. In this context, increasing the cost of fuel can protect our environment to some extent. Besides this, this idea can find solution for different problems; pollutions, congestions, resource crunch, to mention a few. Finally, if it is raised, misuse of fuel will get reduced and the whole world would be able to breathe easier and longer.
On the contrary, the happenings around us have proved that this idea is not that worthwhile. I strongly believe that, in developing countries like India, increasing the cost of fuel beyond certain limits is not a cake walk. But if it is done, misuse of fuel will get reduced and, obviously, there will be great positive changes. However, considering the depth of environmental problems the world faces today,
Therefore, I am inclined to say that the world is not going to get the desired outcome from this plan. The facts being so, let us have a look at India where fuel cost is being revised every six months. But fuel consumption does not come down and environmental problems still haunt many lives..
Putting it in brief, I would like to add that practicing this idea may not reduce problems until and unless people around the world become responsible citizens. This is what I feel.

Four ways to deal with a case: Read these questions and the essays after that.
1.
Some people argue that allocating higher education facilities at universities in a fifty-fifty manner between genders will ensure greater gender participation in the development process.
• To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?
2.
Gender parity in education is a must to ensure optimum utilization of human resources for development exercises.
• What all things stand on the way of gender parity in education in your place?

Some people are of the opinion that, unless quality education is accessible for all, there is not going to be any kind of justice in a given society.
• How right is this opinion in your point of view?
The growth indices of a given nation are decided more by the quality of education enjoyed by its citizens than by any other factors like science, technology, food, health and medicine to mention a few.
• How far you support or oppose this view?
Ajaypeesdoc. 9.01.012
No matter whether a country is developing, under developed or least developed, the need for allocating enough funds for promoting higher education is of greater significance than anything else, say poverty, hunger and the like.
• Do you support this attitude to higher education?
• What alternative ways can you suggest to see that not many people go hungry?
It is education that makes the biggest difference in the lives of people, and in this respect there is no barrier like a country is developing or under developed. But when it comes to keeping the wolf at bay, there are way outs.
The status of an economy is what the status of the population is. If the population is devoid of higher education, and thus incapable, there is not going to be any progress in any country no matter what the present status a given country is.
For example, the educated stand a much better chance than those ones who do not have it. Obviously, those privileged, let them be a minority, are going to contribute greatly to themselves first, their family and community next and thus to their nation at large.
A situation contrary to this, say, higher education is set aside, poverty and hunger are taken care of, I am afraid, both are going to suffer. Poverty and hunger will never fade away, because the real eradication of hunger and poverty takes place, of course in the long run, through education
Besides education, there are alternative ways. Firstly, encouraging people who are unlucky enough not to have got education of their choice, to take up their own income generating exercises like self employment, agriculture, farming and cattle rearing are a good idea. To make things easier for people, lending agencies, particularly international, can offer soft or interest-free loans to poor nations so that the latter can shift themselves into some income generating modes.
In short, the best way to eradicate poverty and hunger is to promote higher education at any cost, and keeping the people free from hunger demands education and allied activities like the one I have mentioned above.

Work related stresses and strains leave today’s professionals hard-pressed with health risks. These occupational hazards claim a lot both from the employees and employers.
Essay 159
• Whose responsibility do you think it is to cut down on these hazards?
• How best can it be minimized? Make a few suggestions.
Today’s professionals are aware that there is hardly any occupation sans a few hazards. Obviously, the job of minimizing these hazards needs to be shared, not so equally though, between the employer and the employee. There are ways to achieve this goal.
Whose responsibility is it anyway? I feel that it is primarily the job of the employers to observe that their workforce remains maximum free of occupation related stress and strains. Though it is not completely possible, it is possible to a greater extent. For example, a hazard-prone employee will show repeated absenteeism, and sooner than later he or she will be a burden to the set up.
However, we cannot expect the employer to be solely responsible. The employees themselves need to be conscious of this fact. Because, being exposed to hazards is harmful primarily to their health. For example, a company can do without a few stressed and strained employees by hiring fresh ones. What would happen to the family of those ones who fall sick of their work related hazards?
Anyway, there are a couple of suggestions to overcome this stalemate. First of all, employers should internalize the fact that their employees are their primary assets. So they should be given flexible working hours, healthy working environment and service based health care incentives. When it comes to employees, they must try their best to maintain better work life balance so that there will be time for work, life and health. Money they may earn out of stressing and straining themselves may not be enough to make good the health risks.
In short, since there is no occupation without hazards, both the employers and employees need to be responsible each other for their mutual well being. I am sure the suggestions I have made are of some value in this direction.

An essay by my student NIMISHA.
If this is the answer, what could be the possible question to it?
It is a known fact that one of the serious problems many countries facing today is with the behavior of students at school. Though there are numerous causes, there are solutions as well. Let me explain it.
As a matter of fact, it is right to say that causes of behavioral problems in students have become a topic of heated discussion for the last few years. In my opinion, the primary reason is not the lack of punishment, but of love affection and attention. This is not only from family members but also from teachers. Also, strict and tense home atmosphere paves the way for violence at school. Secondly, promotion of unhealthy completion in schools can lead to problems among student and it has the power to sow the seeds of enmity. Furthermore, I believe that extreme freedom students enjoy at home, especially by those who are from nuclear family atmosphere, is yet another reason for this problem.
Any way, there are solutions for this issue. Firstly, right education and timely guidance on behavior should be taken as a matter of greater priority and the parents should take initiatives to identify any signs of disturbance in their child’s behavior. Besides, maintaining a friendly atmosphere at schools can also reduce behavioral problems. For example, of late, in countries like UK classes are divided into different shifts so that the school management can concentrate on each student. That is, keeping a healthy, and manageable student-teacher ratio can also solve this problem to an extent.
Putting it in brief, it is right to say that reasons for behavioural disorders reported from many countries may differ. But, identifying the real causes and sorting them out wisely can wipe out this evil from the world itself.
If this is the answer, what could be the possible question to it?

An essay by NIMISHA< my student. You may try to find out the question to this answer.
Not many would deny the fact that tobacco is a substance which creates several social problems. In this context, I believe that it is right to agree with the opinion of getting tobacco banned. Let me explain it.
As tobacco brings in a lot of hazards to mankind, both social and personal, I tend to agree with those who opine to ban tobacco. In my view, primarily, the one who uses tobacco is not only destroying his/her life, but also the one’s who are around them. Let me cite an example. A recent study on child birth shows that, if one parent is addicted to tobacco, the chance for having a handicapped child is 0.5%, and in case of both the parents happen to be addicts, the rate increases to more than 0.9%. Besides all these, passive smoking causes lung cancer and other respiratory tract disorders, it is right to ban tobacco. A sentenced is removed.
However, getting tobacco banned is not a cake walk though. I believe that it is very difficult to carry out a blanket ban, especially in developing countries, as more than 50% of people use tobacco for various reasons; to enjoy, to get rid of tension and the like. Besides this, in developing countries like India, though smoking in public places has been banned, not many are abiding by this rule.
To wind up, I find it right to say that, though tobacco industries extend great financial support to the economy of many countries, considering its harmful effect on generations, it is wise to ban it at he earliest. This is what I feel.
