Sports and the ins and outs of it

The number of youngsters who take up athletics as their career platform is much bigger, but the ones who make it to the top is negligibly small.

• What reasons do you attribute to this disparity, and what can be done to make things better?

Some people hold the view that governments do not need to spend much on promoting sports because private businesses are the ones who exploit the image of sports persons.

Some say that identifying talents much early is the primary thing that makes a boy or a girl successful in their respective talents. Some others hold the view that talents, if any, will naturally surface and success will follow in the long run.

Some people claim that the expenditure for promoting sports and games is so huge and the returns these fields make to the government are not proportionate. So government need not support sports and games.

Sports personalities’ promoting commercial interests for huge pay packages is unethical, and it should be banned.
