The habits like smoking and drinking are personal choices of an individual, and banning them fully or partly is an encroachment on one’s personal freedom. So, it is not right to ban them.

How far do you agree or disagree with this statement?

It is a fact that habits are personal choices, and there are occasions in which governments are forced to ban practices like smoking and drinking. It is done mainly for the general well being of the community, and not to infringe upon one’s personal freedom.

There won’t be many who would appreciate the idea that banning smoking and drinking is not right. My personal position on this is that it is all right do so, and if one wants to pursue one’s personal habits, he or she has to do it in private. When a habit becomes so rampant that ordinary people happen to find their life miserable, they are forced to approach the governing authorities to safeguard their right for healthy life. Therefore, it is right to say banning drinking and smoking, partly or fully, is right, and it is more for the welfare of the larger majority than for the personal likes of a few.

Looking at the view that it is an encroachment on one’s personal freedom, I am of the opinion that personal freedom should not be at the expense of the freedom of others. A non-smoker or a non-alcoholic has all the right to live a life away from the hazards of tobacco and beverages. Moreover, the society is suffering from the ills of these habits, and the need to keep them in check is very important. This is more so when we find youngsters pick up these habits from those addicted to these. So, there is no question of encroachment or whatever.

Therefore, I find it right to endorse the idea fully, and banning a health hazard partly or fully for the well being of all cannot be called wrong. It is the right of the majority to lead a healthy life. Pursuing one’s personal freedom does not get one freedom to curtail another one’s well being.

Expatriate communities -other nationals living in foreign lands- often take out protest marches and demonstrations to invite the attention of the government towards injustice or rights violations.

Some say expatriates do not have the right to do so. Some others claim that injustice needs to be protested against no matter where it happens.

How do you look at these view points?

Visit. www.jpsukham.blogspot.com

With migration becoming more and more popular, many nationals living in foreign countries happen to take out marches against rights violations and injustice. There are differing views on whether it is right to do so. In my opinion, it is right to do so when human rights violations take place. 45 words
To substantiate this, I would like to cite an example on the same that has been reported recently in the media. It is reported that Indian nationals in Malaysia had been suffering from human rights violations ranging from racial and linguistic discriminations. And the Indian community in that place took out marches, and the police suppressed it saying that it is unlawful. But the international community interfered in the issue and it was found that there were cases of human rights violation. It ruled that internationally recognized human rights should not be violated no matter where it takes place. So it is right to take out marches in such occasions. 95 words
When it comes to the view that expatriates have no right to raise their voice, it could be argued that expatriates are supposed to be abiding by the laws and regulations of the land. They need to find out legal and peaceful venues to make their voices heard. That is, it is their duty to keep restrained and try all right channels for inviting attention, instead of jumping into protests. They should not be blinded by the fact that they can protest against anything in the behest of human rights. 95 words
Therefore, I feel that, in this globalized world order, rights violations need to be discouraged by all means. And for the general well being of the guests and hosts, both the parties should show restrained. However, rights violation, wherever it happens, is against humanity. 40 words

Some people are of the opinion that working under a small set up is much more advantageous than being part of a bigger one. There are others who think the other way round too.

What, in your opinion, are the major advantages and disadvantages of being part of a small set up?
Visit. www.jpsukham.blogspot.com

It is quite natural that opinions differ when it comes to whether it is advantageous or disadvantageous to be working under a small or big organization. However, it is an undeniable fact that both options have their own brighter and darker sides.

To begin with, working under a small set up offers a person several advantages. Primarily, it does not cause as much pressure as a big set up does, so that an employee may not get exposed to work related hazards. Secondly, there will be greater and stronger inter-personal relation between employees and the same will lead to better team spirit and higher performance indices. Thirdly, small set ups are free spaces that offer plenty of opportunities to try new ideas and experiment innovations. This is not possible in a big set up where everything is too formal and cumbersome. There are several other advantages, too. 90 words

When it comes to its disadvantages, it is right to say that a small set up does not offer as much growth prospects as a bigger organization does. In a bigger set up, one with right attitude may grow even to the highest rung of their career ladder. In addition to these, there is better scope for getting exposed to the latest technological developments and the working environments will be much more professional and demanding. Apart from all these, a big set up gives a little more job security than a small one does. Being part of a big organization is challenging too. 90 words

Looking the brighter and darker sides of the issue, it sounds right to conclude that both the set ups offer almost equal opportunities, provided the employee sports the right attitude. It is not the size of the company that matters but how one looks at a set up. 45 words

Consumer fests, trade fairs and shopping festivals are regularly being conducted in third world nations, and their frequency is increasing as days pass by, and these events are said to be doing both good and harm to the society.

What advantages people enjoy out of these events?
Do you think their advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Jaypeesdoc. Visit. www.jpsukham.blogspot.com

Commercial events promoting sales of services and products are very common in poor nations and it is a fact that their frequency is increasing. However, these events have both positive and negative benefits to a given society.

If we look at the advantages of these commercial exercises, there are several. Primarily, these events offer great opportunities for the consumers by way of education on products and services. For example, newly arrived and arriving products and services are displayed in such events, and people come to know about them in detail. And it helps them make wise purchase decisions. Secondly, such events are avenues for employment. Many youngsters work at such fairs. Thirdly, it promotes sales and the same, in turn, brings in revenue to the State. There are many other benefits, and these are the ones I find important.

On the other side of the coin, there are a few hard facts which are not that encouraging. Firstly, these events encourage people to buy things they do not actually need. Secondly, these events pressurize the people in such a way that they develop a tendency to pick a use-and-throw culture which is really harmful to the well being of the people and environment. Thirdly, trade fairs and similar promotional activities sell out products and services which are either outdated or at times, they are on the way out. This creates a lot of waste in the surroundings, and waste management is a huge problem these days. And there are many more disadvantages to be cited.

Therefore, the above points make me conclude that, these days, trade events are pressurizing the people and environment alike, and it is obvious that their advantages hardly outweigh the disadvantages. People need to be wise enough when it comes to purchases at such events.

It is argued that when private individuals, who start business enterprises, need to be given tax holidays for a few initial years, as they are putting in their efforts to cut down on unemployment to some extent. But there is another view that tax benefits should not be extended to them because they are making money out of the resources of the state.

How do you look at these two arguments?

15.6.09.

The number of vehicles hitting the roads is on the rise, and the roads are reeling under great pressures leading to accidents and traffic jams.

Some say this could be solved if we put in a ceiling on the number of vehicles a company can sell in a particular period. Some others say, government needs to augment road infrastructure in accordance with the rising number of vehicles as every vehicle pays a sizeable amount as road tax.

How do you look at these two arguments?

Some people say overpopulated nations need to drastically cut down on their population for the general well being of the whole world. However, it is the duty of the under-populated ones to help the former achieve this goal because over population pressurizes the whole planet and the dangers are suffered by all.

Open book examination:
Advantages
Should exams be memory-based?

When it comes examinations different institutions follow different methods, and one such method is open book examination. But some are against it and they say examinations need to memory- based. I am on the opinion that open book exam has its own merits, and all need to evaluate a student all possible ways. 50 words

First of all, let me look at the advantages of open book exam. This method allows students access to books at the time of examination. The primary advantage is that it requires the student to understand the question in such a way that he is able to find out answer to it referring to a book or many books in the given time. This is really a hard test, and it makes a student a vast reader, time manager and a problem solver, to mention a few. Secondly, it encourages self study because the institution may be giving them only basic guidelines as to cover the areas of a particular subject or paper. The student is required to study because he has access to books at the time of the exam. Thirdly, the examiners have the freedom to raise any question in the exam, and the students can expect to face them too. These are some of the advantages. 110

Coming to should exams be memory-based, I would argue that it need not be only memory based. The reasons are that memorizing does not work in today’s performance requirements, and those who are able to memories huge amount of information are book worms, and their world is limited to small areas of study. And education as we all know need to give a student varying opportunities to put him or her to test. Testing the memory is one of them, not all. Further more, if students are required to be tested for other skills like time managing, problems solving, reasoning and multi-tasting in academic ambience and in exam conditions, it offers them myriad opportunities to identify their strengths, and weaknesses if any. So it is right to say examinations need to be much more than testing one’s ability to memorize information. 100

The pointers make me conclude that all examinations, including open book examinations, have their own merits and demerits. However, restricting exams as some exercise that tests a student’s memorizing skill is not a good idea. Rather exams need to evaluate a student in as many ways as there are skills and potentials. 45 words

An instance you failed to pay something you wanted
When it was
What you wanted
Why you failed
How you felt

Well, it is quite common in our life that we want
To pay for something but we are unable to.

One such instance I am going to speak about
happened sometime back, precisely, it was in 2005.

Actually, during this period, I used to travel long distance
as part of my studies. During this time, it was necessary for
me to be in touch with my friends and relatives.

But, unfortunately, I did not have the means to afford a mobile phone
at that time. But I desperately wanted to have one
because many of my friends sported their phones
And I used to look at them with envy and a little jealousy.

Apart from this, I used to go shopping and whenever I
happened to see mobiles displayed, I would get disappointed
And think of my being not able to pay for one.

But later, say after a year, I managed to get one,
And now I do think of those hard times,
But I have no regrets that I wanted to have something
But I was not able to get it.

It is all part of life, and I take such situations as they come.
I do not attach too much importance to such events.
I have been endowed with many other faculties and
Conveniences in my life and I am happy with it.

That is it sir.
