Foreign exchange earnings for Egypt

The two charts break up data on foreign exchange earnings of Egypt in 2002, and income from tourism for the years from 1982-2003.

The pie chart reveals that tourism gave Egypt the highest foreign exchange earning in 2002, 26% followed by industry with 21%. When workers’ remittance amounted from 21%, Agriculture brought in ten times less than that with 2%. Finally, Petroleum and Suez Canal managed to garner 14%, 13% each.

The bar chart on revenue from tourism shows an upward spiral from 1982 to 2000. It started off with 0.3 billion US Dollars in 1982 and it kept on increasing, and after 11 years, in 1993, it rose to 1.9 billion. There was a remarkable increase in the 1995-1997 period. It shot up to 2.9 from 2.2 billion. The year 2000 recorded the highest growth, from 2.9 to 4.3 billion. However, the two periods that followed had same figures: 3.8 billion each. But 2003 had the biggest fall; from 3.8 to two billion US Dollars.

It is clear that in the 80s and 90s the growth was slower but steady, but in 2000 onwards the figures were rather stable barring 2003.

GRAPH ON THE POPULARITY OF MODES OF TRAVEL TO AND FROM WORK

The graph breaks up data on different modes of transport people of a European city used to travel to and from work in three periods, 1960, 1980 and 2000.

To begin with, in 1960, 20% people traveled by bus. This figure went above 25% in 1980. But, when it was 2000, the percentage came close to 15%. When it comes to car users, in 1960, hardly seven percent people used it. In 1980, it showed more than three times increase, 25%, and in 2000 it went past 35%, recording a seven fold rise.

Coming to bike, its popularity declined over the years. When more than 25% people biked to work in 1960, the corresponding figure for 1980 was 20%. The biggest fall was recorded in the year 2000; hardly seven percent. The percentage of those who walked stood at 35% in 1960. In the following two periods, it stood slightly above 15% and below 10% respectively, a decline more than three times.

In short, bus had been very popular in all three periods whereas car’s polarity kept on increasing. But walking and biking turned unpopular over time.

Speak about your dream destination
• Name of the place
• When do you want to be there?
• Why do you want to be there?

Well, frankly speaking, I would like to be in many distant locations. Places like, say, Sidney, Wales, Rome and so on.

Among them, I wish to be in Sidney, Australia.
Actually it has always been my dream to be there,
And I have been striving hard to get myself prepared for the same, and, I would say, this test itself is part of the same. And my plan is to be there in a year or so.

Yes, there are many reasons for my liking towards this place.
I have heard from many sources, like media, Internet and of course from my friends that Sidney is an exotic destination
and it offers something for every one.

For professionals, it is a metropolis of opportunities, for students the city offers many academic facilities, and for travelers, Sidney is a shopping enclave and so goes the list of things that Sidney offers.

And finally, my particular interest towards this place is mainly based on my profession. It is said that Australia is running short of qualified medical professionals.

And I, being one, am very much interested in pursuing a career there. And I am hopeful that I would be able to be there in the immediate future.

That is all about the distant place I would like to be in.

An activity you liked most when you were a child.
What that was
Who often you did it
Who you did it with

Well, childhood memories make anyone nostalgic.
And I for one liked to doing many things in my childhood.

Since I was born and brought up in a village,
I used to have a lot of interesting activities to pursue,
We children in the past had the fortune of great free time
Especially during summer vacation/s.

And our activities included flying kites, fishing, climbing trees,
hunting birds by using crude weapons like catapults etc.

Among them I liked fishing most.
Because our place had, or I would say, we have
a lot of small streams and tributaries and wetlands
And there is a river too.
These waters were home to many fishes
and we used to spend a lot of time fishing.

We had a rare way of fishing, that is, we used to
Make fishing line and rode all by ourselves,
We made hooks out of safety pins
and we used cotton threat as fishing line.
The most interesting thing was that
we had the habit of keeping caught live fish
in plastic bags and bottles.
Our rustic pleasures did not see the suffering of those poor fishes.

Now, thinking of those carefree times,
I often feel like going back to those good old days once again.
Even now, whenever I find children go fishing,
it is very hard to find such scenes these days though,
I too feel like giving them company.
Well, that is it about the activity
I liked most in my childhood

A website you frequently visit
Name it
How often you visit
Why you like this site

Well, as an educated person,
it is difficult for me to do without visiting websites.
For education, profession and for information
people visit one site or the other almost on a daily basis.

The say way, I also visit some sites.
If I am to mention of a few, I would say, they are
Malayala manoramaonline.com
Search engine google.com
The famous job portal Noukri.com,
website of the Hindu daily etc.www.the hindu.co.in
Among them I like the site of the Hindu daily.

I visit this site daily, and I like it for many reasons.
First of all it is highly user-friendly.
An ordinary person with a little working
knowledge of English and computers
can easily navigate and access all information no time.

Second thing I like most is the design of the site.
It is designed almost like the front page of the Daily itself
With a banner heading on the top
And on the left, there is a list of headings,
they are actually links
Or they can be called navigators
Simply clicking them, we can access news on local,
national international etc.
On the right side of the home page there is a shopping portal,
it is for e-shopping and the same showcases
the latest products and services. We can simply know about their price, availability, specifications, quality etc.
And at the right side corner there is a slot for an online survey, where one contemporary issue will be posted, and the visitors can click on agree or disagree. This helps us express our views.
And finally, there is a ribbon like flash-line, which always carries the latest news items. These are the factors that make me like this site.

A teacher you like most
Who that is
What he taught
Why you like him/her

Yes, well, many teachers have taught me
Over my academic years, and there are male and female
Among them, a like a teacher much more than anyone else.

Actually, he was teaching me mathematics
While I was studying for my tenth standard.
His name was, or I would say, his name is
Thomas Joseph.

He is from my place itself,
and I like him very much for many things
Firstly, he was an excellent teacher.
He had thorough knowledge about his subject.
And he had special knack for keeping the class glued to him.

Secondly, he was an accessible person.
We students never felt scared of him
He was rather a friend than a teacher.

Thirdly, he was so compassionate and sympathetic.
He was always ready to go extra miles to help weak students
He used to conduct special classes after class hours.

I have one more reason to like him because,
He was the one who made me get though
My tenth standard exam, because I was very poor at maths
And he instilled in me some courage and
Confidence, and he made it easy for me to face the exam.

I have fond memories about him, and lately
I came to know that he left our school
And is now working at a school in the
Northern part of Kerala. I like him very much.

These are the things that make him like most.

Speak about the busiest time in your life
When that was
What you did
How you felt

Well, Sir, I would, I have always been busy
With one thing or the other
Say, studying, practicing, doing things I like etc.

Still there was a time in my life
Which I would call, the busiest.

It as in 2005 while I was doing my final year nursing programme
It was the busiest time because of many things.

Primarily, I had to clear couple of pending papers
along with that year’s papers.
Unfortunately, during this period
I had to complete a project work as well.
Altogether, the time and space available
for all these thing was very limited
And needless to say,
I had to keep myself fully occupied

This time of the year is the busy period in every student’s life
Still for me it was the busiest. Preparing, practicing, project writing,
And of course, writing exams one after the other in between.

Frankly speaking, this period taught me a lot of things.
Firstly, I knew the value of time
Secondly, I learnt the art of managing time
And thirdly, it was this period
that has made the biggest difference in my life.
This busiest life gives me great dividends
I am a professional thanks to that busy period.

And I must add that it is really wonderful to be busy
Now, I have the feeling that doing things in time is
A sign of good character, too.

A moment that made you happy
When that was
What the significance was
What change it made in you

Well, I have had many happy moments in my life
Like any other one, for that matter.
Still, some moments, I mean, happy moments
Have more significance than others.

I have got one such moment in my life.
It was when I came to hear that my brother in law
Got qualified for a fellowship
Granted by the University Grants Commission

It happened last year, and while I was doing my duty
On a Monday, there came a call from his mobile.

Actually, I thought it was an ordinary call,
But the next moment, he told me that he
Cleared the UGC test for fellowship,
and he would get some 10,000 rupees per month
for pursuing his research.

That moment made me extremely happy because
He was very much interested in doing research,
But he had no idea how he was going to fund it.
That moment was extremely pleasant for everyone.

My happiness knew no bounds,
because it was a duel success.
Firstly, it was a personal victory for him
Secondly, that success was making his dream
and our family’s dream come true.

That was the moment that made me happy.
Of course, there are many other moments, though

Something that you would like to change in your life
What that is
When and how
What difference it will make

Well, sir, there are a few things in my life
That I personally feel like changing.
Though it looks difficult, I would like to change it.

The thing is that I am suffering from
poor time management skills.
Actually this problems gives me enough difficulties
In my personal and professional life.

Most of the time, I feel that I don’t have enough time
To do my things. At the same time
I am very much aware that I too have
24 hours like all others do.
So the problem is not with lack of time
But it is poor management of the same.

I wish like to change my attitude to time management
Say, before I fly over to some distant locations.
I know I can do with this habit here,
But In a foreign location, I am sure,
one cannot do without
Proper time management skills

Of course, such a change will make great improvements
in my life, both professional and personal.
More over, I can have great control over things
If I am able to manage my time.

So I would like to change it as fast I can.
But I am very much aware that habits die hard
If there is a will there is a way, I believe so.
So this is what I would like to change in my life.

Some people believe that monetary rewards would keep sportspersons motivated to do their best whereas there are others who feel that it is name and fame that does the job.

• How powerful is money in keeping sports persons motivated?
• Do you think name and fame does have a role to play in this?

It is fact that money is a great force to reckon with in anyone’s life. This is true with regard to sports persons as well. However, the number of people who go for name and fame is sports career is much higher than those who go for money.

Money is powerful to some extent. Monetary benefits of sports are so alluring and tempting that many sports lovers pursue their career aiming at making it big with money. But the fact is that their number is much less than others who are out for name and fame. The scope for making money or the possibility of getting honoured with money is of course a drive which keeps a smaller minority motivated to do well. It is right to say the power of money is limited to a few and its attraction is not so compelling.

Name and fame, on the other hand, is what makes most of the people excel in sports. It is this that keeps the fire burning in them. Their ambition, insatiable will to excel and thereby becoming part of the sports history of their nation make them go the extra mile. In this relentless process of winning minds and making history most of them are tend to ignore the lure of money because money comes, sometimes it stays. But name and name visits one extremely rarely, but it never leaves one. So it stands great many cuts above money.

In short, excelling in sports takes a lot more than money and name and fame. Still, comparing money with name and fame, there is no doubt it is the latter that holds much sway. Name and fame keeps one performing relentlessly.

Surveys reveal that up-to 20% of 12 year olds in some schools are showing signs of nicotine addiction. In the 18-20 year bracket, the percentage is as high as 70. A large contributing factor to this high level of addiction is the uncensored TV advertising of cigarettes. For this reason, all cigarette advertising should be banned. Discuss.

It is a known fact that addition to nicotine is highly rampant among younger age groups. This could be attributed to many factors. Television advertising on cigarettes, in my opinion, is just one of those factors. Therefore, banning such advertising would not have the desired effect. 45

To begin with, advertising as such is a great force to reckon with when it comes to influencing people, especially youngsters. This does not mean that youngsters pick up bad habits like smoking directly from TV advertising. Rather, there are innumerable other agents that are much more powerful than TV advertising: the pressures growing up, temptations from smoking parents and extreme availability of tobacco products, to mention a few. 65

For example, smoking is eulogized in the movies, and the heroes and villains of new age films are powerful enough to make our young children feel that it is something to be “smoking”. The macho impact of smoking gets reinforced more by such instruments of entertainment than by mere advertising. TV adverting is a flashy thing that comes and goes unlike films. So banning it is not going to make any difference. 70

However, it is premature to ignore the fact that uncensored adverting promoting cigarettes does influence children, though the extent of such impacts is much lesser than what other forces are able to make. For example, constant company of smokers, the urge to test and taste something adventurous, the false notion that smoking alleviates tension and the like are real compulsions. 60

In short, the discussion makes me conclude that nicotine addition seen among younger age groups is contributed more by several other external influences than by advertising on cigarettes per se. However, banning TV commercials on cigarettes is not bad either for the general good of humanity. 45

Population in many poor nations is so big so that these nations are not able to meet their daily necessities like food, shelter, medicine and education. This condition is not just because of over population but because of several other kindred factors like poor resource, backwardness in technology, geographical difficulties and so goes the list. However, things altogether are not so bad as the outside world may think of these nations. What I mean to say is that there is great improvement in the field of infrastructure, but mostly in urban areas where the population is already rich, and, as a matter of fact, the real need for development is not in urban pockets but in rural expanses.

Preserving wild life and their habitat is not only beneficial for animals themselves but human population as a whole also stands to gain great dividends by way of food security, green cover maintenance, ground water upkeep, periodic rain fall, temperature balance, soil preservation and the list is likely to go endless in today’s world of extreme exploitation and mindless mismanagement of the wild.

That I have enough water in my well does not give me the freedom to misuse or mismanage water the way I like because water is a life source and the scarcity of which is so acute across the world that the need for keeping what ever quantity of water I have in my well, of course after meeting my needs, for tomorrow either for me or for the generations to come is of greater significance than anything else.

2.

It is unfortunate that for most of the people today, education is meant just for earning a job, rather, in my opinion, it is a holistic non-stop development exercise that gets started from one’s home itself and remains spread across the society one lives in, the school one studies at and the professional environment one happens to be in and all the acquaintance one is likely come across throughout his or her life.

Some say that clinical trials on humans are mandatory for determining the effects and side effects of medicines being developed so that there will be fewer and fewer killer diseases in the days to come.

• Argue for and against this view?

The propriety of clinical trial on humans has been a topic of heated discussion for ages. However, the need for it on humans to authenticate medicines is opposed and supported by many. Let us see the arguments.

Primarily, a trial of good intentions by all means is going to benefit the humanity as a whole. So, if a few humans are encouraged to take part in clinical trials so that the veracity of a life saving medicine could be ascertained, there is no harm in going for it. Second argument is that trials on humans are the best way to find out the real effects of a medicine. It is more accurate and time saving. Third point is that a trial that leads to a life saving medicine may become history and the name of the person who has taken that risk will be etched in golden letters.

Though it all sounds good from a medical angle, there is a human angel to it. Human life, no matter it is of an ordinary beggar or a billionaire, is the most precious thing in this world. And no one is entitled to make a test on it for the rest of the world. Secondly, who is going to bear the brunt of the after effects of such trails? Once the result is out, the patient is simply ignored. Thirdly, if it is allowed, there will be a time when human lives will be bought and sold by multi-billion pharmaceutical conglomerates. It is dangerous per se.

So arguments and counter arguments galore. Where are we actually? Clinical trial on humans is worth supporting if looked at it from a medical angle, but the dangers involved in it are equally powerful not to support it.

Advertisement and modern age

An essay by a plus two student of MCV GHSS Kottayam
uploaded with permission

In the present age, what we buy depends on what we see in advertisements. We do not think about what we really need and hence buy what the advertisements want us to buy. But what we realize is that we are playing puppets in the hands of these advertisers, not realizing the fact that what the ads portray is illogical.

An advertisement costs the company a lot of money. These companies make up these charges by making the product more expensive. We can also see that the products with more advertisements are more expensive than others of the same kind but people still buy it. If we take an example of a soap, there are soaps with retail prices ranging from rupees hundred to rupees five. The costlier soaps have more advertisements. The ones with low prices can satisfy our needs but we still go after the ones with heavy price tags.

The funny fact about present age is that people make advertisements for anything and everything. There are even advertisements for utensils, bath ware, beverages etc. Some advertisements cross the line and promote products by showing men and women in under garments. It is all to sell their products, or in other words buy the confidence of consumers like us.

If we look into our daily life, every part of it has something that we have seen in an advertisement. We wake up on a bed we have seen in the newspaper and get down into a pair of foot wears we have heard in the radio and we go to the bathroom to brush with the tooth paste we have seen on the television. Nowadays we look into advertisements for everything. We look for ads to decide on what we should feed our children with. The fact is that we line in the world of advertisements and we grow our children to be part of it.

Advertisements altogether are not bad. If we look at it in a positive way, we can find that they help us in many ways. If we think about it we can see that it gives us options of what we can have. Now there are even advertisements that help create awareness among people on diseases, resources and the rights of people.

The increasing number of advertisements throws light on the world of consumerism. We are consumers. We buy everything; we have no capability to produce what we need. These are the problems of present generation. There is no awe in the realization that advertisements rule the world. This is due to the attitude of people. It changes every moment. It is like a young monkey jumping from one branch to the other.

To conclude, the present age relies on advertisements to a larger extent. As time moves on, the influence of advertisements on people will increase, and in future, there would be nothing that is not advertised. May be we all will be advertised. And we will wait for it. And it wouldn’t be far away. 500 words

Some people are of the opinion that when families become smaller, people happen to live better lives whereas there are people who feel that it is bigger families that make life better.

• Which view do you support and state why? You may identify examples from your life or surroundings to prove your point.

When it comes to the general family welfare in these days of change and opportunities, I am inclined to believe that smaller is better. But, it does not mean that bigger families cannot make differences in today’s life.

Though the things that make me support smaller family are many, I would like to concentrate on one thing. Today, smaller families enjoy great freedom and financial independence. This is by of educated mothers and fathers and the enormous employment opportunities thrown open by private sector enterprises. Obviously, all members of the family would get better shares of the family’s gross income. It will be in terms of education, food, security, medicine and social status.

For example, today working mothers and fathers are able to keep their families self sufficient in more ways than one and they can manage their family affairs among themselves, and there are not many around to be consulted and fallen back on. In such scenario, I am sure, smaller families are able to do better.

Bigger families, on the other hand, are impractical today, and when it comes to family welfare, too many members of different age segments and earning statuses, may make enough room for uneven distribution of family welfare instruments like money, material, securities and the like. Here bigger families are of course at a disadvantage. The only thing is that children may feel a little securer and there will be a little space for consultation.

So, it is proved that smaller families stand a greater chance in terms of better life than bigger families. There are evidences too. The strengths of bigger families can in any way stand the odds of modern times, I would say.

Some social scientists view that mothers who stay home and engage themselves in family upkeep are able to do much more to a family than those working mothers are able to.

• To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?

There was a time when mothers were just homemakers. Times have changed, and today motherhood has gone out of the four walls of the home. This makes me think that working mothers are able to do much more to a family.

The one and only thing that makes me contradict the view of social scientists is that today, family is much more a collective institution of man, woman and children than a man-made social unit. In such a set up, I do not think mothers need to stay back home 24x7.

Let me cite an example to prove this point. Today, children start to attend school when they are hardly two years, and their mothers are highly educated, enterprising and willing to earn on their own, and there are opportunities everywhere to make their time more productive either for themselves, or for their family or for the community at large. So working mothers can work wonders in terms of family welfare.

On the other hand, if all mothers think that staying home all day is going to turn their families into envious social units, they are grossly mistaken. Cost of living is going through the roofs, educated women are going to be mere child bearers and caretakers, and their better halves, men, are going to bear the whole brunt of making both ends meet. Such a state of affairs is not at all encouraging.

So where are we? Things with regard to family have undergone great changes, and husband and wife are equally important players. Full time mothers, on the other hand, are not going to do much good to any family these days. I hope social scientist may excuse!

Three questions on media

1.
Some people believe that not reporting child abuse should be taken as a crime against humanity, and the media that ignore the rights of the defenseless (children) need to be banned.

• Discuss both the views and say what you feel about aggression on the defenseless?

2.

Television, as one of the powerful instruments of a healthy democracy, of late, seems to be concentrating much more on entertaining the masses than on keeping them informed of the happenings around them.

• How right is this media attitude in your place?
• What do you think are the dangers of not keeping people informed?

3.

There is an argument that, since almost all the media are by-products of advertising (and are not being funded by the State), governments cannot in any way have controls over any media operation.

• Do you agree or disagree with argument?

Work related stress and strains leave today’s professionals hard-pressed. These occupational hazards claim a lot both from the employees and employers.

• Whose responsibility do you think it is to cut down on these hazards?
• How best can it be minimized? Make a few suggestions.

Today’s professionals are aware that there is hardly any occupation sans a few hazards. Obviously, the job of minimizing these hazards needs to be shared, not so equally though, between the employer and the employee. There are ways to achieve this goal.

Whose responsibility is it anyway? I feel that it is primarily the job of the employers to observe that their workforce remains maximum free of occupation related stress and strains. Though it is not completely possible, it is possible to a greater extent. For example, a hazard-prone employee will show repeated absenteeism, and sooner than later he or she will be a burden to the set up.

However, we cannot expect the employer to be solely responsible. The employees themselves need to be conscious of this fact. Because, being exposed to hazards is harmful primarily to their health. For example, a company can do without a few stressed and strained employees by hiring fresh ones. What would happen to the family of those ones who fall sick of their work related hazards?

Anyway, there are a couple of suggestions to overcome this stalemate. First of all, employers should internalize the fact that their employees are their primary assets. So they should be given flexible working hours, healthy working environment and service based health care incentives. When it comes to employees, they must try their best to maintain better work life balance so that there will be time for work, life and health. Money they may earn out of stressing and straining themselves may not be enough to make good the health risks.

In short, since there is no occupation without hazards, both the employers and employees need to be responsible each other for their mutual well being. I am sure the suggestions I have made are of some value in this direction.

Outright banning of production is the only way out to remove the menace caused by disposable plastic products from the face of the Planet.
Essay 021
• How feasible is this idea in your opinion?
• What suggestions do you have to discourage plastic?

Disposable plastic has been wrecking havoc on the environment and the need for controlling its use is very high. However, a blanket on its production does not sound feasible on many counts. There are several other ways to manage it.

Over the years, disposable plastic has been part of human life for long and it is almost inevitable. However the fact is that it is all at the cost of the very environment we all live in. Unfortunately, a blanket ban does not sound feasible to me because thousands of people are working in it, private players have great stakes in it, and the tax revenue cannot be undermined either. In such a scenario, an outright ban should give way to other way outs.

To my mind, firstly, people need to shun this stuff from their life in a phased manner. For example, carrying cotton bags at the time of shopping is a good idea. If everyone does it, plastic carry bag industry will find its door all by itself. So are the other products like containers, cups, plates, spoons, wraps and covers. Secondly, we may monitor the quality of plastic being manufactured. Thirdly, we can impose a freeze on starting new plastic industries. Finally, let us stop demanding for it. When demand dies so does production.

In short, the onus lies in us all. If we are aware and able, we can do away with disposable plastic. Here it is worth adding that we are too late to impose a ban on production. Rather we may bar these products from our life for good.

In addition to this, this particular outfit has

And it is free falling as the outfit itself.

Secondly, it is a modern dress
And my friends say I look really pretty

At that there appeared a stray bull,

Actually straying bulls are very common in our place.

and he stood there stunned. But the bull really scared him
by shaming its horny head against him.

The funniest thing was that this spectacle was being
Watched by several drivers and passengers who got held up in

A tree found commonly in your state:
Two minutes’ exercise: Cue card

Well, my state is known for great green cover.
And it has great wealth of tree varieties, too
The one I would like to talk about is the most common coconut tree.

To begin with, this tree is so common in our state.
And our state is named after this tree.
That is, Keralam in Malayalam means the land of Kera trees.
Something, special about this tree, I think, is that it is ubiquitous.
There is no family in the countrysides without at least a coconut tree.

Coming to its other features, it is a tree of great significance.
Primarily, it is a tree of spiritual and cultural significance.
That is, coconut is seen as a sign of wealth and prosperity.
And people use it on all major occasions:
Like marriages, poojas, rituals and ceremonies.

Secondly, all the parts of this tree are useful someway.
Its trunk is so hard and lasting that people use it for furniture.
Its leaves are also useful. Plaited leaves are used for thatching roofs
And coconut kernel and oil products are widely used in Kerala dishes

And finally, its shell and husk are raw materials.
They are used for coir products and many artifacts.
All the other parts, say, its dry bunches,
its pods and leaf bones, to mention a few, are used as firewood.

Well, it would be unfair if I don’t mention about tender coconut.
It is a great health drink, which both the natives and tourists like alike.
Even doctors recommend it. It is a rejuvenating drink for patients.
Those who suffer from dehydration, diarrhoea etc get seedy recovery.
So this tree is socially, medically and spiritually significant.
That is all about it.

Take this as a token answer, and you may select your tree, Mango, jack tree, banyan, palm, rubber, teak, mahagony etc. and develop an answer in accordance with their significance. Please try to apply the frame of the above answer. Words, steps, personal phrases, divisions and conclusion. Good luck.

Since every mistake is taken as an opportunity to do better, some people believe that children should be given enough freedom to commit mistakes, whereas some others say they should be instructed to avoid mistakes as it enables them to be careful and conscious.

Essay 071
• What is your opinion on these two view points?

There are differing views on whether children be given enough freedom to commit mistakes or they should be encouraged to avoid mistakes. But it is a fact that committing mistakes is an opportunity that makes children do well. I think pressing children to avoid mistakes may hamper learning.

Not many would deny the fact that learning is a complex process involving a lot of exercises. One such exercise is doing and learning. For example, when children are given freedom to commit mistakes, while engaged in some learning activity, they are likely to feel at home and do err. When the teacher or the mentor highlights the mistake and rectifies them, the ward happens to get the gravity of the mistake s/he has done. It helps her/him correct it once and for all.

On the contrary, if we insist our children to avoid mistakes, what happens is that it hampers the learning process, because, children are free learners and it is their sense of freedom that makes them at ease. Still, wanting them not to commit mistakes is good to some extent because it makes children conscious of what they are doing. This conscious approach to learning process cuts down on the number of mistakes. However, forcing them to do things right all the time is not encouraging.

Looking at both the arguments, I am of the opinion that it is a good idea to let children commit mistakes. Trial and error method in learning is an excellent concept being promoted world over. Of course, if children could avoid mistakes all by themselves, it is not bad either.

Should parents be obliged to immunize their children against common childhood diseases? Or, do individuals have the right to choose not to immunize their children?
Essay 053
• What do you say?

I think it is the most important responsibility of parents to protect their children from common childhood diseases. This is the moral obligation of parents towards their children. I feel that individual should not be given the freedom to choose not to immunize their children.

Children who live in the rural areas, where standard of sanitation is very poor, are under the constant threat of infectious diseases. Some people are unaware of the need to keep their environment neat and tidy. Health education and awareness meetings should be provided to these people. A process called immunization can build the child’s immunity against serious infectious diseases. Nowadays, vaccination is used for immunization. The killer diseases like Tuberculosis, Measles etc. can be prevented by active immunization.

In my perception, parents must show seriousness about the health of their children. They must know the immunization schedule provided by the hospitals or health care system. And when it comes to whether individuals should be given the right to choose not to immunize their children against diseases, my stance is that there should not be a choice at all. Every responsible individual should be made to understand the importance of immunization and the government should oversee the process of immunization.

To conclude it, it is right to say preventions is better than cure, and bringing up a healthy generation for the coming days is the responsibility of every individual. And immunization is the first step towards this. Here there is choice or right. It is mandatory.

The Planet Earth has in its reserves what ever it takes to feed much bigger population than it already has on it. Therefore, it is unfair to bring down population through any means.

• Do you think this argument is very well founded?
• Can the world do without population control?

It is a known fact across the world that our Planet is rich enough to feed much more population than what it has on it now. In the light of this fact, controlling population is unfair. However, we cannot do without minimizing population. That is what I feel.

In order to see whether this view holds some water, I would like to quote some statistics on population and global resources. Global demographic data show that 57% of its population is in Asian countries, and when it comes to data on resources, 60% of it is held by 28% of population spread across the Americas and Europe. If this disparity in population distribution and resource availability is taken care of, there is no need for any kind of population control. Our planet has more than enough to feed the present population and those coming generations.

Unfortunately, this disparity is going to be there till the end of time because, distribution of population cannot be made even. Coming to resources, there are huge impediments like geographical inconveniences and geopolitical implications. For example, hugely populated nations cannot mobilize part of their population to thinly populated places, and enormously rich nations cannot think of sharing resources with the poor on a regular basis. This dichotomy is what makes population control necessary, at least in thickly populated areas like Asia.

Looking at the issue objectively, it is right to say that population control is unjust. But being a rich Planet is one thing and being able to feed the whole world is something else. Obviously, poor nations need to adopt population control measures. This is for their own good.

Sentence one:
