Outright banning of production is the only way out to remove the menace caused by disposable plastic products from the face of the Planet.
Essay 021
• How feasible is this idea in your opinion?
• What suggestions do you have to discourage plastic?

Disposable plastic has been wrecking havoc on the environment and the need for controlling its use is very high. However, a blanket on its production does not sound feasible on many counts. There are several other ways to manage it.

Over the years, disposable plastic has been part of human life for long and it is almost inevitable. However the fact is that it is all at the cost of the very environment we all live in. Unfortunately, a blanket ban does not sound feasible to me because thousands of people are working in it, private players have great stakes in it, and the tax revenue cannot be undermined either. In such a scenario, an outright ban should give way to other way outs.

To my mind, firstly, people need to shun this stuff from their life in a phased manner. For example, carrying cotton bags at the time of shopping is a good idea. If everyone does it, plastic carry bag industry will find its door all by itself. So are the other products like containers, cups, plates, spoons, wraps and covers. Secondly, we may monitor the quality of plastic being manufactured. Thirdly, we can impose a freeze on starting new plastic industries. Finally, let us stop demanding for it. When demand dies so does production.

In short, the onus lies in us all. If we are aware and able, we can do away with disposable plastic. Here it is worth adding that we are too late to impose a ban on production. Rather we may bar these products from our life for good.
