Advertisement and modern age
An essay by a plus two student of MCV GHSS Kottayam uploaded with permission
In the present age, what we buy depends on what we see in advertisements. We do not think about what we really need and hence buy what the advertisements want us to buy. But what we realize is that we are playing puppets in the hands of these advertisers, not realizing the fact that what the ads portray is illogical.
An advertisement costs the company a lot of money. These companies make up these charges by making the product more expensive. We can also see that the products with more advertisements are more expensive than others of the same kind but people still buy it. If we take an example of a soap, there are soaps with retail prices ranging from rupees hundred to rupees five. The costlier soaps have more advertisements. The ones with low prices can satisfy our needs but we still go after the ones with heavy price tags.
The funny fact about present age is that people make advertisements for anything and everything. There are even advertisements for utensils, bath ware, beverages etc. Some advertisements cross the line and promote products by showing men and women in under garments. It is all to sell their products, or in other words buy the confidence of consumers like us.
If we look into our daily life, every part of it has something that we have seen in an advertisement. We wake up on a bed we have seen in the newspaper and get down into a pair of foot wears we have heard in the radio and we go to the bathroom to brush with the tooth paste we have seen on the television. Nowadays we look into advertisements for everything. We look for ads to decide on what we should feed our children with. The fact is that we line in the world of advertisements and we grow our children to be part of it.
Advertisements altogether are not bad. If we look at it in a positive way, we can find that they help us in many ways. If we think about it we can see that it gives us options of what we can have. Now there are even advertisements that help create awareness among people on diseases, resources and the rights of people.
The increasing number of advertisements throws light on the world of consumerism. We are consumers. We buy everything; we have no capability to produce what we need. These are the problems of present generation. There is no awe in the realization that advertisements rule the world. This is due to the attitude of people. It changes every moment. It is like a young monkey jumping from one branch to the other.
To conclude, the present age relies on advertisements to a larger extent. As time moves on, the influence of advertisements on people will increase, and in future, there would be nothing that is not advertised. May be we all will be advertised. And we will wait for it. And it wouldn’t be far away. 500 words
