Converting old and no-more-in-use constructions into usable spaces for today’s needs is better than putting in a lot of money on newer constructions causing environmental concerns. • How realistic is it to believe that refurbishing the old is enough to satisfy today’s needs? Construction in any form is likely to cause some environmental concerns. However, old and under-used buildings would not be able to meet the ever increasing need for space. In my opinion, the money saved there of is not worth it, and the idea is not realistic at all. The primary argument is that there is huge disparity between the need for space and the available old and underused spaces. For example, it is not at all possible to accommodate spacious offices and business houses in old buildings. Secondly, old buildings are old enough, and they are to be kept as they are because they are monuments, and may not able to accommodate the pressures of our times. For example, it is known to all that, today, living and office spaces demand a lot many devices and machinery which, in turn, expect the spaces to be impeccable and lasting. Besides the above two arguments, there is yet another point. How are we going to accommodate sensitive spaces like research facilities, super specialty hospitals and administrative hubs, to mention a few? So no way is it possible to substitute old buildings for news spaces no matter how much money it is going to save thereof. However, it is not a bad idea to make wiser use of old useable buildings for any useful purpose. This is beneficial in several different ways. It saves a little money, cuts down on environmental concerns and, above all, such a move would help old buildings last a little longer than they would have other wise. So it is proved with evidences and examples that it is not realistic to be substituting old building for newer space needs. Anyway, making use of the usable old space is not bad either, so that our environment would breathe easy. 275 words Ajaypeesdoc. 29.4.012

The popularity of eco-friendly construction engineering is picking up much faster among today’s builders, both domestic and corporate. • What all factors do you attribute to this shift in attitude? • Is eco-friendly construction feasible across the spectrum? The concept, ‘Eco-friendly’ is the buzzword heard across the world. Naturally, it gets echoed in the field of construction too. Obviously, there must genuine reasons for its popularity, but it is premature to believe that construction can be eco-friendly everywhere. The first thing is that the world today stands unable to shoulder any human action that is not eco-friendly. Secondly, a great number of environmental concerns the world suffers from are generated out of unscientific and haphazard construction practices. For example, concrete, steel and similar materials being used to raise multi-storey edifices work like heat absorbents, making the world hotter. Thirdly, the whole world is running short of energy and material resources because of the constructions spree. So these are the major factors that facilitate this shift towards going ‘eco-friendly’. Unfortunately, this heightened popularity cannot be expected everywhere. There are certain areas where ‘eco-friendly’ may not work. For example, infrastructure development like security zones and strategic research centres cannot be made confirming to eco-friendly ideals. This is also true with regard to a person who tries to get a home for himself in a unfriendly geographical location. For example, is it possible for the people of the Gulf to expect their buildings to have windows at all places where there should be air conditioners? Answer is in the negative. So its global application is not feasible. In short, thought not possible everywhere, the shift towards being eco-friendly is a welcome development indeed. People who are engaged in domestic and industrial construction areas need to think in terms of applying more eco-friendly construction principles. 263 words Ajaypeesdoc. 29.4.012

Acronyms, short forms, abbreviations and similar language tools extensively being applied in real-time communication media are able to send wrong linguistic signals to budding language users. • How genuine is this concern in your opinion? Today, it is conveniences that make human life much easier than it was. This is reflected in communication devices as well in the form of abridged language expressions. As a matter of fact, this is a matter of some concern. The popularity of short text messaging is much higher among people today. This is mainly to save money, energy and time. However, the concern here is on a single poser: is language alteration worth promoting randomly? I tend to say, it is not, because in real time communication media, younger ones, especially, children extensively use hybrid versions of words and expressions. It may send wrong signals. For example, writing ‘lukt’ instead of looked, ‘hru’ instead of how are you, ‘metu ltr’ for meet you later, and ‘gr8’ for great, ‘C U ltr’ for see you later and the like are likely to be absorbed by young language learners. This may distort their spelling and grammar consciousness. This is a genuine concern indeed. This concern notwithstanding, we need to understand that basic business of any language is make communication easier and possible, and adopting a few not-so-harmful language liberties is worth it. This is primarily because of the fact that today, most of the people are running short of time, and saving time by avoiding complicated spellings and combinations are need of the hour. Above all, people start using these hybrid language versions knowing fully well that the real words and expressions are different from what they use. Therefore, it is fair to conclude that indiscriminate altering of language leaves room for a little concern, especially when it comes to children. But we cannot ignore the fact that wise management of this liberty is of great value in today’s fast paced life. 275 words Ajaypeesdoc. 25.9.011

Great many youngsters are of the opinion that their attitude towards food and dress culture is a matter of choice, and it is not a matter of concern that such cultures change as time passes by. • Do you agree or disagree with the view? Support your view/s with examples from your life or surroundings. Change, no matter what it is, is the order of human life. However, certain things do need to be kept free from changes. Food culture and dress culture are two such things. Undermining these is a matter of some concern. The concern is that modern generation finds it alright to undermine food habits and dress cultures. The problem is that the dress culture is something unique to all cultures. For example, in our culture, a set of white dhothi and shirt is the typical outfit goes with men at auspicious occasions. The same way women have their own; like saree and all that come with it. So is the case with food culture. Three times traditionally prepared food is the order of our culture. And occasional changes in this have always been welcome, though. On the contrary what happens if all cultures happen to endorse the view that it is a matter of choice! This will create wrong precedents, and the coming generation may happen to be dependent on alien foods which may not be in line with their metabolic requirements. For example, the health indices of a community hinge at its traditional food habits. Wrong food leads to health risks. The story will be a little murkier with regard to dress. Dress culture identifies itself with people and it happens the other way round too. A generation simply cannot turn its coat saying it is a matter choice. It is a concern indeed. In short, looking at the changing attitude towards food and dress cultures, I am inclined to say, the food culture of a populace determines their health status itself. When it comes to dress, it is right to add that it often proclaims one’s culture too. 285 words Ajaypeesdoc 28.8.011

women in power are less corrupt than men

Some say women in power are much less inclined to corruption than their male counterparts. • To what extent do you support this view? There is a popular saying that, ‘power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely’. But this is not always true when the reins of power are held by women. In my point of view, it is right to say that most women, though not all, are not so prone to corruption. 45 words The only and only argument to support my view is based on the fact that corruption as such is a heinous social evil. Let it be in any form, corruption is a cancer, and it can eat away any society. And in any society, it is women who happen to suffer more from the ill effects of corruption than men. For example, graft is a form of corruption, and if graft happens to take over a given society, men in that society will rule supreme by way of money power, and women will have to suffer from the effects of the same. Obviously, women themselves may not get corrupt. Men on the other hand are prone to corruption. This is due to their being in positions of power, and their needs and ambitions are much more than that of women. Naturally, they happen to get their hands greased in one form or the other say, favours, cash or kinds. However, it is very hard to have generalization that all men are likely to be corrupt and all women are free from corruption. History has several evidences to prove that both men and women, when in power, have got themselves corrupt. Ms. Emilia Marcos of Philippines was corrupt to her core. Dr. Radhakrishnan of India was the cleanest of statesmen the world has ever seen. So it sounds right to conclude that the number of men in power who are corrupt is much bigger, unlike the number of women in power who are corruption prone. Power corrupts, but it is more male centric than female. 260 words. Ajaypeesdoc. 21.4.012

Our dining tables: Our duties, demeanor and responsibilities
Vaatupura A. Jayaprakash

Food and family life go together in all cultures. Down the ages generations have evolved themselves more out of their own food cultures than out of anything else. Their eating habits have inscribed in them indelible marks of social values, duties and responsibilities which got incessantly promoted at their dining circles. It has been so until recently.

Lately, there developed a great attitudinal shift in this connection, and present generation has evolved a new food culture. This new attitude has started costing our social and family values dearly, and the most visible impacts of this crazy consumption psychosis is not just the medical uncertainty we find at our five star hospitals but it is the abysmal character and behavioural disorders we find in our new generation.

Our dining times of lore have silently given way to eating sprees at food courts and junk joints. We carry home alien dishes; we hangout and savour sandwiches, French fries, McDonalds, KFCs, pizzas and suck up those aerated cokes and colas. Coupled with these are our 24/7 working environment which leaves precious little to be expected of our new generation. They are what they wolf down. Junk.

Since our society is not so generous to accommodate a junk culture for long, it is time we looked at the finer side of this change in food habits and its impact on our character and behaviour. How we prepare our food, the way we eat that food, the times we eat it and who we eat that food with etc. have got much more to offer us by way of behaviour and character. This is a very rare process through which individuals get groomed themselves up to the expectations of the family and society they belong to. See how that grooming exercise works:

· A full-fledged kitchen is the laboratory that records and maintains the health indices of a given family.
· All the ingredients that go into the making of a traditional dish are components of a course of medicine.
· The hands, along with the mind and its mood, that prepare the dish leave a rare taste to it, and it is unique for every kitchen and the family it belongs to.
· It is not the quantity that matters when we eat at our family diner, rather it’s the quality with a tinge of love and likes that matters.
· Father, mother, sister, brother, some elders, like grandparents or relatives, together with a few occasional guests would make every dining an exclusive experience.
· When we eat food like this three times a day fairly unfailingly for quite sometime, we not only follow a balanced diet, but also we imbibe in our children a great sense of belonging, sharing, understanding, and above all a deeper sense of character and behaviour peculiar to our family and the culture.

It is, I repeat, it is this sense or the sensibility that we lose out when we go for an alien food culture. Besides the medical calamities our new generation comes to hit at eventually, we are losing out on our own ‘foodholds’ which have been evolved out of centuries. One day it would go extinct, and the coming generation would have to depend solely on a foreign food culture. Naturally, the new generation will come to have a character and behavioural order alien to our native culture and family values, contrary to our duties and responsibilities.

If ever we could identify a single human activity that has caused abysmal fall in social, family, personal duties and responsibilities, it is this: our fast disappearing family dining experience. Therefore, there is urgent need for reinventing our ethnic food culture so as to expect our new generation to be showing better signs of behaviour and character and respect for values that are indigenous to our make and of course our demeanor.

In many under developed countries, the scope for education based employment is extremely poor. Some say it is a wise idea for such countries to ignore higher education, and mobilize the funds saved thereof to meet the expenses of other pressing areas.

How far do you agree or disagree with this view?

Ignoring higher education on the grounds that there is no scope for employment, I feel, is an unwise step. Obviously, the funds generated thereof cannot solve other problems like hunger, shelter, poor health and the like. Let me prove it.

Primarily, purpose education as such is not just getting a paid monthly paid employment in one’s own country. It is one of its purposes. For example, a person with higher education is likely to live a better life than any one who has not got it. The reason for his or being better is nothing but education, not necessarily a paid employment. Second point is a developing country or an under-developed country is not going to be so for ages. One of the purposes of higher education is to make the nation progress. For example, educated people can contribute greatly to a nation by way other contributions than employment.

Third thing that comes to my mind is that today, world is a single whole, and people with education are free to move out and find their fortunes elsewhere. For example, millions of people migrate to greener pastures and make great differences in their life, their immediate family, society and nation at large.

On the other hand, if a poor nation ignores higher education infrastructure and decides to utilize that fund for other areas, there is going to be dual tragedy. Firstly, these funds may not meet other needs and, secondly, the nation will ever remain poor or poorer.

In short, it is proved that poor nations cannot forgo higher education. That there is poor scope for employment is not reason enough to do so. Rather poor nations need to tighten their belts to solve other problems, and promote higher education.

A government - that does not have the resources to offer employment for the educated - does not need to invest funds on higher education.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view. You may have your own examples taken either from your life or surroundings to prove your point. Jaypeesdoc.19.4.012

As a matter of fact, ensuring higher education is the responsibility of the State. But, if the State is unable to provide employment for the deserving, allocating funds for higher education does not seem worthwhile. Let me prove it.

The primary purpose of higher education is to make a person lead a decent, civilized and meaningful life by making use of his education in terms of employment. This basic requirement gets sabotaged when the educated find themselves jobless thanks to the poor state of affairs existing in many poor economies. For example, when great number of educated people stay jobless, there arises concerns like social evils, deadly habits, apathy and antipathy towards the State and its mechanisms, to mention a few. This is dangerous to a greater extent.

Coupled with the above are the other pressing needs of poor societies where food and medicine, roofing and sanitation, regular supplies and security are under great threat. Naturally, the funds allocated for higher education can be directed to these priority segments. This will make great changes in the daily living of people. Let me cite an example. A society that is unable to sustain itself due to resource crunch may not be able to make any sustainable developments, higher education segment included. In such a context, is it fair to invest sizably for higher education? Negative.

In short, there may be lofty ideals governing higher education prospects of a given State. But these ideals are of no use unless the educated are able to find themselves doing deserving jobs. Higher education sans employment prospects does not need funding.

Some social scientists are of the opinion that the financial and material prosperity generated by globalization has taken the health indices of the world to newer highs.

How far can you endorse this view? You may take examples from your surroundings to substantiate your point of view. ajaypeesdoc. 17.4.012

No one can deny the fact that globalization has been able to make the world population enjoy better standards of living. But, when it comes to better health indices, it is hard to fully support the view expressed by the social scientists. There are reservations. 45 words.

Health care sector across the world has been witnessing unprecedented developments in terms of developing medicines, inventing diagnostic devices and procedures, initiating preventive and curative measures, to mention a few. For example, a great number of the so called incurable diseases, like cancer and TB, are now curable, and mortality and morbidity rates across the world have been showing better signs. Even AIDS patients lead longer lives. Coupled with these is the heightened private intervention in medical care leading to huge super specialty facilities springing up like mushrooms. All these, obviously, augur well for globalization.

However, all these possibilities notwithstanding, there are huge concerns with regard to general health indices across the spectrum. Primarily, health care as such has become extremely expensive and, as a result, the lion’s share of the population, especially those in poor nations, is not able to access the possibilities of all medical innovations. Secondly, financial and material prosperity has made great number of people pick up very unhealthy eating habits and lifestyle practices leading to severe health risks. For example, over weight, strange cancers and cardiac disorders are much more common today than ever before.

In short, it is fair to conclude that globalization has done great service to humanity in terms of health. But it does not mean that over the years the health status of the world has gone higher. The material and financial gains of the world seem to be back firing when it comes to health indices.

Making Cups
Cups have been used for centuries by people all over the world. Everybody knows what they are for but few people know how to make them. I will now show you the steps involved in making cups.
First, dry clay powder is placed in a container and water is added. The water and powder are mixed together, the excess water is removed, and the mixture is shaped into flat shapes.
Next, the shapes are pressed into cup moulds, and handles are added. Then the moulds are put in a kiln where they are dried. After drying, the rough edges are smoothed off before the cups are baked in a kiln. It is important to make sure that the kiln is at the correct temperature. Finally, the cups are decorated. Before being sent to shops the cups have to be checked and imperfect ones rejected. The good cups are packed and sent to retail outlets.
We use cups everyday, but how many of us know the steps involved in making such a necessary product!
Speak about your dream destination
• Name of the place
• When do you want to be there?
• Why do you want to be there?

Well, frankly speaking, I would like to be in many distant locations. Places like, say, Sidney, Wales, Rome and so on.

Among them, I wish to be in Sidney, Australia.
Actually it has always been my dream to be there,
And I have been striving hard to get myself prepared for the same, and, I would say, this test itself is part of the same. And my plan is to be there in a year or so.

Yes, there are many reasons for my liking towards this place.
I have heard from many sources, like media, Internet and of course from my friends that Sidney is an exotic destination
and it offers something for every one.

For professionals, it is a metropolis of opportunities, for students the city offers many academic facilities, and for travelers, Sidney is a shopping enclave and so goes the list of things that Sidney offers.

And finally, my particular interest towards this place is mainly based on my profession. It is said that Australia is running short of qualified medical professionals.

And I, being one, am very much interested in pursuing a career there. And I am hopeful that I would be able to be there in the immediate future.

That is all about the distant place I would like to be in.
End of the text
While rising health education among people keeps them highly conscious of their health, extremely free availability of medical information through various media, on the other hand, keeps people highly anxious about their health.
Essay 002
• How far is this true in your place?

Information is both powerful and dangerous. This is more so when it is a matter of access to medical education and virtual availability of medical information. While the former keeps people empowered, the other leaves them worried. This is true in my place too.

It is a fact that health education is on the rise. This is contributed more by media than by other social agencies. Anyhow, people, who are aware of health, are likely to be on guard against diseases, and they are able lead lives according to the dictates of their knowledge. For example, in our place great many people are found to be doing for periodic check ups and following healthy life style practices like following fitness regime, drinking boiled water and so on. Actually, this is a welcome development thanks to rising health education.

Unfortunately, today people are inundated by information on diseases, symptoms, medicines, diagnostics and surgical procedures. This is actually dangerous. This knowledge, instead of making them conscious of their health, leaves them at tender hooks. For example, people with too much health education may find themselves hypochondriacs. They may even go for forced medications. For example, in our place, some people who have got great access to medical knowledge feel afraid of their health status. It is their excessive knowledge on health that makes them anxious. This is a reality in my place.

In short, unless we are able to identify what information makes us conscious of our health and what makes us anxious, any information on health is dangerous. I hope everybody takes note, including the people of my place.

An essay by one of my online students, Jesmi Ms.

Some say that identifying talents much early is the primary thing that makes a girl or a boy successful in their respective talents. Some others hold the view that talents if any ,will naturally surface and success will follow in the long run.
Which view do you support and state why, with examples from your life or surroundings?

Each child is unique and has his or her own interests and talents .When some say this has to be identifed first in order to be successful in their life, others opine that this talent hunt can be complete only when they pass their childhood period. In my opinion the latter view holds much water.

The interest of a child changes as s/he grows up. This is a natural phenomenon. It is because children have a very little knowledge about everything and they get interested in things which can keep them amused. It may be arts, sports or the latest technologies. For example, many children spend hours with art forms like dancing, painting or with computer games. This might be misunderstood as their favourite zone by adults. Most often, these youngsters do not show any talent in these areas in their later life.

On the other hand, very often those who have found their real interest in something have realized it in their adolescent or adult period. At this age, it is very easy to identify, whether he is talented or just attracted towards his area of interest. To cite an example, many sports personalities have understood that they are talented in a particular game in the latter part of their teenage.

However, there are some exceptional instances, where children are found interested in something and later it is proved that they got an ability to excel in that field. But, the number of such cases is very small.

In short, childhood is a period of enjoyment and slow and steady enlightenment for children. Checking out their talent at this time is not a wise idea. But, this period will help them to an extent to find out in what they are talented in future.

one of my online student' JESMI"S ESSAY

There was a time when employers went to any extent to protect their employees at even the hardest of business times, but of late many employers engage in laying off their junior and sometimes senior staff whenever there is a decline in their business.
• Why is this change of attitude to employers?
Do you think it is a good idea to lay off employees at times of crisis?

The relationship between the employer and employee is a temporary one. During the time of business crisis, either that bond gets stronger or it gets broken. It depends on many things. Many employers lay off their workers at this time. Though they can make many explanations, but in my opinion, that is not a good trend.

When one employee starts to work as a team member, the employer has got a responsibility to protect his worker, since he is under his order, and serves the company as good as he can. Of course in the past very few employers had the attitude of laying off his workers. But, today the number of such job providers has increased. The main reason behind it is the changed lifestyles and behaviour. Today, most of the bosses wish to reap great success in their businesses. If they do not get the desired income, they start to cut off the possible means of expenses first. Naturally, that comes to the sending out of some their workers. Not only the junior staff but also the senior staffs get such 'firing.'

However, sending out employers is not good for the company. In order to orient the fresher, the senior staff have to work a lot.
