The popularity of eco-friendly construction engineering is picking up much faster among today’s builders, both domestic and corporate.
• What all factors do you attribute to this shift in attitude?
• Is eco-friendly construction feasible across the spectrum?
The concept, ‘Eco-friendly’ is the buzzword heard across the world. Naturally, it gets echoed in the field of construction too. Obviously, there must genuine reasons for its popularity, but it is premature to believe that construction can be eco-friendly everywhere.
The first thing is that the world today stands unable to shoulder any human action that is not eco-friendly. Secondly, a great number of environmental concerns the world suffers from are generated out of unscientific and haphazard construction practices. For example, concrete, steel and similar materials being used to raise multi-storey edifices work like heat absorbents, making the world hotter. Thirdly, the whole world is running short of energy and material resources because of the constructions spree. So these are the major factors that facilitate this shift towards going ‘eco-friendly’.
Unfortunately, this heightened popularity cannot be expected everywhere. There are certain areas where ‘eco-friendly’ may not work. For example, infrastructure development like security zones and strategic research centres cannot be made confirming to eco-friendly ideals. This is also true with regard to a person who tries to get a home for himself in a unfriendly geographical location. For example, is it possible for the people of the Gulf to expect their buildings to have windows at all places where there should be air conditioners? Answer is in the negative. So its global application is not feasible.
In short, thought not possible everywhere, the shift towards being eco-friendly is a welcome development indeed. People who are engaged in domestic and industrial construction areas need to think in terms of applying more eco-friendly construction principles.
