Converting old and no-more-in-use constructions into usable spaces for today’s needs is better than putting in a lot of money on newer constructions causing environmental concerns.
• How realistic is it to believe that refurbishing the old is enough to satisfy today’s needs?
Construction in any form is likely to cause some environmental concerns. However, old and under-used buildings would not be able to meet the ever increasing need for space. In my opinion, the money saved there of is not worth it, and the idea is not realistic at all.
The primary argument is that there is huge disparity between the need for space and the available old and underused spaces. For example, it is not at all possible to accommodate spacious offices and business houses in old buildings. Secondly, old buildings are old enough, and they are to be kept as they are because they are monuments, and may not able to accommodate the pressures of our times. For example, it is known to all that, today, living and office spaces demand a lot many devices and machinery which, in turn, expect the spaces to be impeccable and lasting.
Besides the above two arguments, there is yet another point. How are we going to accommodate sensitive spaces like research facilities, super specialty hospitals and administrative hubs, to mention a few? So no way is it possible to substitute old buildings for news spaces no matter how much money it is going to save thereof.
However, it is not a bad idea to make wiser use of old useable buildings for any useful purpose. This is beneficial in several different ways. It saves a little money, cuts down on environmental concerns and, above all, such a move would help old buildings last a little longer than they would have other wise.
So it is proved with evidences and examples that it is not realistic to be substituting old building for newer space needs. Anyway, making use of the usable old space is not bad either, so that our environment would breathe easy.
