Modern businesses are having tough time in handling different generations of individuals who make up their workforce.

• How does generation gap affect a workforce?
• What it takes to bridge the generation gap?

It is a downloaded article from ciliconindia.com. You may try to answer the above question by reading the following 600 hundred-words-long article.

How to bridge the generation gap in the workplace?
Most of the businesses today are facing a peculiar problem. This is not something which is derived from downsizing, change, foreign competition, cubical envy or greed. It is difficulty of generations in conflict. Modern businesses are having tough time in handling different generations of individuals who make up their workforce. Lack of attention to generational differences will make any company less efficient. Therefore, a good understanding of differences among generations to strengthen work relationships between employees is very crucial.

To some people, the requirement to manage generation in the workplace may look like an unnecessary task, but this generation problem commonly found in businesses is worthwhile to take note of. In an organization there may be different generations of workers like veterans, who are above the age of 60; "Baby Boomers", employees in the age group of 45 to 65; generation X, employees in the age group of 30 and 45; and generation Y, employees in their 20s or even younger. It's very obvious that these employees will have their own sets of mind, and because of that they will clash with each other due to the differences in values, ideas and work style.

So what it takes to bridge the generation gap? As research shows, in an organization, employees interact on the basis of their upbringing, values and ideas. Thus, different generations have their own way of thinking and working, according to their background. Therefore, to be effective in the process of bridging the gap, an organization must know its employees as individuals, their background, personality, preferences and style. Realizing this issue and knowing how to deal with the gap will bring employee efficiency to an organization.

An organization can follow certain steps to bridge the generation gap in the workplace. It can provide training to the employee on the communication and working style of the different generations. Practicing this can be very useful in avoiding misunderstandings as well as confrontations in the workplace. Conducting regular seminars and special events can serve this purpose well. If the employees begin to understand other employees belonging to other generations, it will be easy for them to work together in a better way.

While making policies, related to motivation or any other aspect of business, the needs of different generations should be kept in mind. For instance, those employees belonging to generation X can be motivated by a higher salary or bonus, while those employees belonging to veterans can be motivated by giving recognition and respect.

One of the most typical problems that face a modern business that is operating with a number of different generations in its workforce is related to technology. Generally, Younger generation communicate with e-mails, text messages or instant messaging. On the other hand, in most cases, the older generations want to speak face-to-face, or at least over the telephone. In this case, a balance has to be maintained.

Apart from this, there can be problems with communication between different generations of worker, physical limitations of the older personnel in an organisation and so on. Hence, the need to fulfil a range of diverse wants and aspirations to keep an entire workforce satisfied.

Today, organizations require a varied range of skills, and this requirement cannot be fulfilled by just one of the generations discussed above. The organizations have to understand that the route to success depends a lot on discovering a balance between different generations. The human resource managers in organizations have to make sure the utilization of advantages, mitigation of weaknesses and at the same time encouraging as well.
Free movement of market, men and material across the world is taken as an opportunity by some people, but some others are of the opinion that it has made the world suffer from countless problems.
Essay 041
• How genuine are these views in your opinion?

Borderless movement is the order of the day and the same is going to stay, too. Naturally, there are differing views on its merits and demerits. What I feel is that it is more an opportunity than a problem. I can prove it, too.

Let me explain what all opportunities such a movement offers people. Firstly, it is market interplay. Nations, both rich are poor, interact and benefit each other by way of employment, tax and market penetration. Secondly, it is the movement of human resources. Human resource is a perishable one, but today there are opportunities across the world to make better use of one’s potentials for the welfare of the whole world. Being able to use one’s intellectual and physical strengths is much better than not using or under-using them. Thirdly, a free world order makes developments faster, so are the socio-economic conditions of the world.

However, all is not well with this all-encompassing world order. There is rich-poor divide getting widened thanks to movement of resources to more productive lands. Secondly, poor nations become unattractive even to their population due to the greener pastures offered by the world outside. Thirdly, there are cultural and traditional values that get deteriorated, and some of them even get extinct too. However, the fact remains that these are just the aftermaths of changes and influences.

In short, since this changed order is bound to be here for long, and there is no scope for any U turn, it is a good idea to identify the possibilities of it and try our best to manage the difficulties. Humans are intelligent enough to do so. 265 words Ajaypeesdoc

Some institutions follow open book examinations.

What are its advantages?
Do you think that exams should be memory-based?

When it comes examinations different institutions follow different methods, and one such method is open book examination. But some are against it and they say examinations should to be memory-based. I think open exam has its own merits, and we need to evaluate a student in all possible ways.

First of all, let me look at the advantages. This method allows students access to books at the time of examination. The primary advantage is that it requires the student to understand the question in such a way that he is able to find out answer to it referring to a book or many books in the given time. Secondly, it encourages self study because the institution may be giving them only basic guidelines as to cover the areas of a particular subject or paper. Thirdly, the examiners have the freedom to raise any question in the exam, and the students can expect to face them too. These are some of the advantages.

Coming to should exams be memory-based, I would argue that it need not be memory based. The reasons are that memorizing does not work in today’s performance requirements, and those who are able to memories huge amount of information are book worms. And education as we all know needs to give a student varying opportunities to put him or her to test. Testing the memory is one of them, not all. Further more, when students are required to be tested for other skills like time management, problem solving, reasoning and multi-tasting in exam conditions, they become competent, competitive and industry-friendly.

These pointers make me conclude that all examinations, including open book examinations, have their own merits and demerits. However, restricting exams as some exercise that tests a student’s memorizing skill is not a good idea. Rather exams need to evaluate a student in as many ways as there are skills and potentials.

There is a new approach to retirement age limit which guarantees certain number of years’ service for all from the date of joining, say 30 years, of course with a minimum and maximum age limit for joining.

• Look at the advantages of service-period based retirement system?
• Do you think its advantages outweigh the advantages of age-based retirement?
Ajaypeesdoc. 1.7.011

When should one retire? It has been a pestering question for ages. Now, there is new approach to it called service-period based retirement, Let me look at its advantages and see whether it can outweigh the merits of age based retirement.

How good is this new system? It needs scrutiny. First of all, it ensures certain number of service for all the employees. Secondly, when there is provision for a fixed number of years’ service, obviously, the nation can make better use of its human resources. Thirdly, it is right to say that all those who get paid employment can make substantial contributions for themselves in particular and for society in general. There is greater scope for young bloods as well.

Age-based retirement, by the way, is of course able to accommodate youngsters every year provided the set age is affordable. Besides, this system makes whole service sector organized in the sense that there is a particular date for every one’s retirement. Say for example, in Kerala 55 years is the age limit. But the retirement date is at the end of the financial year. This is a blessing for many.

But for one who is waiting to fill the gap left by retirees it is a huge problem. But there is a problem that people who join service at the cut of date of joining may get only a few years’ service. This is not so in service-period based system where one is assured of certain years’ service no matter when he or she joins. In this system some people are retiring from service everyday and some are joining too. Waiting for year-end retirement does not happen here as well.

In short, looking at the advantages of conventional retirement practice and the new one, the latter one stays a cut above the former. Anyway, the new approach needs to be tested to be accepted by all.

Three questions: 30.6.011

1.
Longer working hours and shorter intervals put great many workers in severe disadvantages. Some people say this damage can be made good by the financial benefits they enjoy out of extra work. But there are others who say that money can hardly do the job.

• Which view do you support and state why?
• Do you think it is good to exchange free time with money?

Money, as a matter of fact, is able to keep man happy to a greater extent, and it is this fact that makes many people ignore their free time and engage themselves in some paid work.

• Is this trend of some value from your personal point of view?
• Barring money, what are the other major things that go into the making of one’s happiness?

3.

Different people have different parameters for their happiness quotient. However, there is a view that money as such counts much more than anything else when it comes to everyone’s happiness.

Speak about a speech you have listened to

Well sir, as we all know speeches are common in our democracy.
And there are speeches delivered by politicians, scientists, statesmen etc.

Recently, I happened to listen to a speech
It was delivered by none other than the new US president.
The occasion was the victory Mr. Barak Obama had in the last US Election.
As the 44th President of the US, he was addressing the nation.

The speech was held at the Victory square, at Gattisburg.
I listened to it on the web, when CNN telecast it live.

When it comes to the speech, it was basically inspiring.
Obama addressed a lot of issues in his speech:
Like Iraq, Afghanistan, war on terror, slavery, poverty, war, nuclear
threat, environemtal concerns and so goes the list.

The most interesting thing about the speech was his repeated reference
to his election slogan, Yes We Can. And we need to change.
He was addressing the people of the US in particular, and the world in general.
He was extolling the American virtues, values and achievements.

The language he employed throughout his speech was simple.
He was straightforward and his words were really transparent.
HE SOUNDED SINCERE AND HE SPOKE REAL BUSINESS.

He seemed to have taken extra care not to make any negative references.
He even praised his opponent in the fray Mr. McCane, and he thanked
him for his cooperation and understanding throughout his one year long
election campaign across America.

And the whole speech, spanning upto an hour, was an extempore, and I sat
watching him rewriting the history on the US.
Frankly, speaking, I myself got inspired by his words, his ‘Yes, we
can’, attitude is worth following.
That is all about the speech I listened to.

Over emphasis on industrialization is one of the major reasons for the mounting energy crisis. So it is a good idea to observe industrial holidays for some time as to achieve energy supply-demand equilibrium.

Essay 069
• Do you think it is worth a try?
• How can we meet the ever-mounting energy demands?

Energy security is the driving force behind the success of all nations. But of late countries around the world are facing problem with it due to over industrialization. It’s true that industrial holiday is a good idea worth trying though there are many other ways to offset this imbalance.

Though industrial holidays, suspending work for sometime, are being looked at with suspicion as they are likely to halt progress, it is worth a try because there are certain power crazy industries which may be halted for sometime; for example, manufacturing of luxury goods. Though the rich may not be happy with such a move, we can try it in select areas. There are certain industries which do not need to be working all year long. So power could be supplied to industries on a priority basis, and the power so saved could be channeled to meet the demands of other power needy sectors.

Besides this, there are many other ways to maintain energy demand supply equilibrium. Firstly, wise management of available energy. It can be done by cutting down on transmission loss and plugging theft. Secondly, consumers need to be educated about the value of power, and ask them to shun luxuries. And finally, there are enormous renewable energy sources around us like wind, solar and tidal energy. They could be tapped to meet the mounting power demands.

To conclude it, it is true that over industrialization is no good, but we cannot observe industrial holidays much frequently. So there needs to be initiative from all quarters to manage power and make other power sources work for the power grid of the world. Energy security leads to better life.

Surveys reveal that up-to 20% of 12 year olds in some schools are showing signs of nicotine addiction. In the 18-20 year bracket, the percentage is as high as 70. A large contributing factor to this high level of addiction is the uncensored TV advertising of cigarettes. For this reason, all cigarette advertising should be banned. Discuss.

It is a known fact that addition to nicotine is highly rampant among younger age groups. This could be attributed to many factors. Television advertising on cigarettes, in my opinion, is just one of those factors. Therefore, banning such advertising would not have the desired effect. 45

To begin with, advertising as such is a great force to reckon with when it comes to influencing people, especially youngsters. This does not mean that youngsters pick up bad habits like smoking directly from TV advertising. Rather, there are innumerable other agents that are much more powerful than TV advertising: the pressures growing up, temptations from smoking parents and extreme availability of tobacco products, to mention a few. 65

For example, smoking is eulogized in the movies, and the heroes and villains of new age films are powerful enough to make our young children feel that it is something to be “smoking”. The macho impact of smoking gets reinforced more by such instruments of entertainment than by mere advertising. TV adverting is a flashy thing that comes and goes unlike films. So banning it is not going to make any difference. 70

However, it is premature to ignore the fact that uncensored adverting promoting cigarettes does influence children, though the extent of such impacts is much lesser than what other forces are able to make. For example, constant company of smokers, the urge to test and taste something adventurous, the false notion that smoking alleviates tension and the like are real compulsions. 60

In short, the discussion makes me conclude that nicotine addition seen among younger age groups is contributed more by several other external influences than by advertising on cigarettes per se. However, banning TV commercials on cigarettes is not bad either for the general good of humanity. 45

Since women are not so aggressive as men, there is a view that disputes between nations won’t be much dangerous if high seats of power are held by women.

• How far can you support or oppose this view?

Not many people would deny the fact that women are less aggressive than men. Therefore, if women are in power, international disputes may become much less damaging. All the practical difficulties notwithstanding, I am inclined to support the idea greatly.

Let me try to substantiate the view by pointing out a general proposition. It is a fact that women are the victims of all types of aggression, emanating either from domestic surroundings or from international disputes. Naturally, they are bound not to be confrontational. For example, women have the will to think in terms of consequences whereas jingoistic men have the “come what may” attitude when it comes to disputes. This is not only dangerous; rather it is devastating in today’s world of international tensions.

However, the fact remains. How many women are going to hold offices of power so that the world could be made less dangerous? Obviously, their number is very small. How about holding those highest offices of power which demand extreme will and acumen? Not many women would say ‘yes’ to it. And, finally, is an all- women-run world is going to be appreciated by all men of the world? No. All these practical difficulties cannot that easily surmounted very easily because running nations is a highly demanding responsibility.

So, looking at the view from both the angles, I tend to support greatly the idea that women diplomats are much less damaging than men in many counts. However, it is not that easy, though, to envisage such a danger-free world run by women of great calibre.

Though aqua-tourism prospects are widely being exploited world over, it is a fact that this tourism is doing much more harm than good to people and ecology. So it is to be discouraged.

Essay 066
• How far do you agree or disagree with this?

It is a fact that aqua tourism, as a tourism genre, is doing great harm to people and ecology since it operates on water. So the need for discouraging it is important, but we cannot simply ignore its potentials though.

Keeping the available water clean and preserving water reserves undisturbed are of greater importance than what water based tourism is likely to generate by way of revenue. It is evident and a fact that many automobiles are on the move on water, and the effluences they discard are doing great harm to the biodiversity. Coupled with this is the wasting of fresh water for entertainment purposes in water theme parks. Conducting races on water, taking expeditions under water etc disturb aqua life. So the need for discouraging aqua tourism is felt more today than ever.

However, aqua tourism as an industrial component is so powerful that it is able to generate great revenue and employment opportunities to people. So it is hard to simply ignore it, rather, instead of promoting further activity on water, we may be able to develop efficient alternatives to ensure that water bodies are not harmed. Since the whole world is facing pollution based problems leading to shortage of drinking water, wasting water for tourism is not a good idea.

To conclude it, it is right to say that any development exercise needs to be sustainable and eco-friendly. Otherwise, life on earth in the long run may not be possible. So, aqua tourism does need to be water-friendly.

Some people say that it is a good idea to make periodic medical check ups compulsory for all adults so that the health status of a state can be better kept, whereas some others say maintaining health status is more personal than institutional.

• Look at both the views say what you feel about it?

It is a fact that health status involves several factors. Periodic medical check up is one of them. However, coming to compulsory medical check up, what is I is feel that keeping health status is more a personal responsibility than institutional.

Let me prove that compulsory medical check for adults cannot do much to the general health status of a populace. Undergoing medical check ups is one thing and going through a medical regime subsequent to a check is something different. In a national perspective, we cannot expect the whole adult population to be strictly following what ever is medically advised. Social status, per capita income, gender difference, nature of employment, to mention a few, of people may vary and not many can stick to the instructions given after every check up.

On the other hand, if people take it as a point that being healthy is something great and, thereby, able to understand that prevention is better than cure; they will be able to keep their health status all by themselves. For example, informed people will eat right, work out well, stay away from hazardous habits, go for periodic check ups and identify health risks in time, and they will invite medication whenever needed. This will lead to better health status, of course. So health status is more personal than institutional in many more ways than one.

Therefore, looking at both the views, I find it right to conclude that health status of a population is determined more by personal interests than by institutional involvement. Compulsory medical checkup is fine, but it is fine just for the sake of checkup, not for anything else.

Production and consumption of energy in the US 1950-2000 and 2025
Ajapeesdoc.23.5.011
Here we have a line graph on production and consumption of power in the US from 1950 to 2000, and the projected figures for 2025 also given. Energy is calculated in British Thermal Units (1=1 quadrillion).

In general production and consumption show an upward trend. In 1950, there was a slight difference, and in the following years, there felt an upward spiral. The figures stood between 25 and 40 units, but in 1975, production touched almost 60 units and consumption stood slightly above the same; the increase is above two-fold.

But, over the years, say between 1975-2000, production stood below 60 units, but demand went far above 80, and the difference was offset by imports. This variation continued till 2000 making a huge difference of nearly 30 units. In short, the US witnessed a three to four fold increase in demand and supply of power.

Coming to the projected figures, there will be huge difference in 2025. It may be by the tune of 60 units, from nearly 80 to 140 units.

Concluding the report, it is right to add that the US will have to depend too much on imports to keep its power supply-demand equilibrium in future. 190
There is an argument that development refugees - people who get displaced by development projects - hardly get any benefit out of the projects they themselves facilitate by forfeiting their places of existence. This is a violation of basic human rights.
Essay 079
• How far do you agree or disagree with this standpoint?

Today, almost all developments displace some people. But there is hardly any provision to ensure that these development exercise need to look into the welfare of the people who facilitate the very project itself. It is a violation of human rights to a greater extent.

Governments and corporate giants have ambitious projects. Of course, these projects are to meet the mounting needs of humans. However, implementation of a project demands space, and most of the time it is occupied by people of different statuses. These people are forced to move out upon offers of rehabilitation. But the fact remains that they are not going to find a trouble-free life in a new locale. At the end of the day, the projects come up and the benefits hardly visit these people. This is inhuman and against basic human values. I would rather call it a clean case of human rights violation.

The above argument notwithstanding, we cannot ignore the fact that there are certain projects which demand the people to vacate themselves. Sensitive areas like defense, aviation, research and development demand voluntary participation. And, most of the time, ordinary people may not be the immediate beneficiaries. However, they lose their place of sustenance. In such cases, there needs to be a system in place to rehabilitate people to much more comfortable areas than the places they had forfeited. It is a kind of rights protection.

Concluding it, it may be said that development and the resultant refugees are going to be regular affairs. So, it would be wise to have a permanent and humane rehabilitation policy so that the question of rights violation can be sorted out.

Some people say efficient management of human resources of a nation is the best way to achieve long-term development goals whereas there is another view that it involves many other factors than just human resource management.

• Discuss both the views.

Opinions may differ on how a nation can achieve long term development goals. But not many would deny the view that it involves several different factors. In my opinion, wise human resource management is the most crucial of those factors.

It is a fact that all development exercises are carried out more by human resource than by anything else. Let me cite an example. Research and Development (R&D) is crucial for achieving long term goals. Who is going to do these? No doubt, it is people. Right people I would say. So, it is mandatory that right human resource needs to be identified, developed, deployed and directed rightly according to needs. If this is done time to time, there is great scope for development, and achieving future goals may not be that difficult for any nation. It is the best way of course.

However, we cannot ignore other factors that contribute to future expectations. The primary thing is that there needs a stable system of government with great vision to achieve things time to time. What follows this is political will. What I mean is that administrators, political heads and intellectuals should be there all the way to chalk out plans and projects. It is their will to take the nation forward that makes the rest follow. So, a stable government, political will and experts to give a sense of direction are the other decisive factors.

Discussing both the views, what I feel is that long term development milestones are possible only if there is concerted effort from all quarters. Human resource management is the first thing, but the rest are not unimportant either. I feel so.

Though poor nations are known for great human resources, these nations run short of efficient manpower to hold offices of higher education, research and development.

• Why is this disparity?
• What are the implications in the long run if it goes on like this?

Though shortage of human resources to man offices of higher learning and research is seen everywhere, it is more common in richly populated poor nations. There are reasons for this, and this has great social ramifications in future.

The first thing that precipitates this disparity is migration. These days, migrating to greener pastures is a daily affair, and millions of nationals from poor nations find their dream destinations in richer economies. Secondly, in poor nations early career selection is much more common than it is in rich nations. As a result great many youngsters skip their higher study options and end up in careers. Thirdly, I believe it is the poor attraction higher rungs of studies and research has. This is more due to poor status of the nation than of anything else. Maybe there are other reasons too.

From a social and national point of view, high caliber manpower shortage is dangerous. It is intellectual property that propels a nation to future expectations. This will not happen if there is shortage. Secondly, poor nations will never be richer or better. Thirdly, the intellectual property of these nations will be exploited by the rich and they, in turn, turn richer and powerful. Besides, poor nations will have to import know-how and expertise. This is extremely unaffordable for poor nations. There are several other implications too.

In short, human resource shortage as such is detrimental to any nation, rich or poor. Needless to say, the long term implications are bound to make such nations still poorer. Encouraging higher learning is the need of the hour for poor nations. That is what I feel.

Advocates of equal gender representation argue that higher education facilities need to be distributed equally between males and females whereas there are some others who feel that such a system would put higher education in disarray.

• Discuss both the views and put in what you feel about the first argument?

The right to higher education is equal for both the genders in all democracies. But, coming to earmarking higher education facilities equally between them, I tend to say it would be better to keep them open for both than equally distributed.

My argument favouring the second opinion is that doing higher education is more a matter of attitude and interest than one of right or entitlement. For example, a boy who has got great interest in doing some higher studies may not be able to find a seat of his choice if there is a stipulated number of seats for boys, and of course for girls. Secondly, demographically speaking, the numbers of boys and girls who go for higher education have never been equal even in the most advanced of democracies.

Let me see the first view of earmarking higher education seats equally. If it is set so, there are a few dangers. Firstly, a right candidate may not find a slot, and many wrong ones will find their places, too. Secondly, there is a possibility of seats remaining vacant for want of enough takers. For example, let us take the case of mechanical engineering. Boys are more interested in it than girls. Obviously, the seats set for girls may not get filled. This will lead to great losses in terms of infrastructure, faculty and allied facilities.

So, in short, what I feel about the first argument is that it is not only reasonable but unrealistic as well to keep all, I repeat, to keep all higher education seats equally divided. Rather it would be better to keep all education opportunities open for all.

E. tutoring and e. learning is becoming increasingly popular all over the world. This virtual learning platform offers great advantages for tutors and learners alike.
Essay 099
• Do you think its advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

E. tutoring and E. learning are very common today. This is mainly to the mounting popularity of the Net as an interactive medium. Obviously, both tutors and learners reap benefits, and in my opinion, it offers enough advantages to outweigh the disadvantages.

Online tutoring and learning offers several advantages for both the parties involved. Primary advantage is that it works 24/7 and round the year. Tutors and students can benefit each other by way of interaction, education and value addition. Secondly, it is a virtual learning experience as tutors could be from different nations, and so could students be. It is a kind of exchange. Thirdly, this is a great employment provider. Educated, employed and even retirees could make use of their free time and earn a lot of money. It is a win-win for all in more ways than one.

There are certain disadvantages for E. education though. Firstly, it is the limited possibilities for tutor-leaner face-to-face. This may dampen the spirit of learning. Secondly, accountability factor may be absent because the authenticity or veracity of information imparted may not be reliable. This may harm students and their performance. Thirdly, we cannot rule out the inconveniences it is likely to cause with regard to geographical positioning of both the students and tutors. There could be a few more pitfalls anyway.

Looking at the positives of the concept, it may be concluded that negatives are not strong enough to counter the positives. It is all a matter of how we make use of it. What is there that does not have an unpleasant side? E. education is no exception.

Tables and pie chart. Survey result on shoppers’ reaction on shops, restaurants and design

The tables and pie charts in question carry the result of a survey on what shoppers to find out how they felt about a new shopping complex in Auckland, New Zealand. Findings are in percentage terms.

When it comes to shops, 17% males were very satisfied and two times more than that number of females said, ‘very satisfied, 34%’. If we compare these figures with those males who were satisfied, it’s the highest percentage; 45%, but only 37% females said so. However, coming to dissatisfied lot, the figures are same, 20%. When 18% males preferred no comment, half of that number of females said so.

How shoppers looked at restaurants? Higher number of males seemed satisfied than females. The figures are 55% and 32%. But this is not so with very satisfied; it is 25% and 27%. Again males constituted the least number of dissatisfied, 5%, but four times more than that number of females were dissatisfied. Coming to no comment, figures are rather high, 15 and 20 for males and females.

Let us how they reacted to the design of the complex. 62% people were satisfied with it whereas 17% said they were very satisfied, and when 10% expressed dissatisfaction, the remaining 11% preferred ‘no comment’.

That is the end of the report.

This table shows data on quantity of grains exported to Sri Lanka from India and the figures, given in tonnes, represent every five years starting from 1999.

Let us begin with the figures of wheat export. In 1999 the quantity was 345 tonnes, but it showed a fall by 10% in the following year. However, there was a remarkable increase in the following two periods. When 2009 had an export of 400 tonnes, export went up to 440 tonnes in 2009.

If we compare these figures with that of rise, there are striking contrasts. In 1999 the export of rise was almost two times more than wheat and so is the case with the figure of 2004, 600 tonnes. Recoding an all time high increase of 50%, 2009 figures stood at 1050 tonnes but the following period did not make much difference, it was 1100 tonnes, hardly 5% increase.

Maize is the least exported grain. The periods 1999 and 2009 recorded the same quantity,150 tonnes. Similarly 2004 and 2010 had the same figure, 200 each. And finally coming to corn, with a fall of nearly 50% in 2004, all three periods had an export of above 300 tonnes.

All together, export of grains from India to Sri Lanka show varying figures over the years with rise being the most and corn the least exported grains in the given period.

Wingsuit flying

The art of flying the human body through the air using a special jumpsuit that shapes the human body into a airfoil, with fabric sewn between the lets and under the arms, which creates a lift, once you reach a safe height, a parachute is developed and you land safely.

This is a suit meant for people bored of bungee jumps, for those willing to take one step further in the never ending quest for a risk-induced high. Of course you need to overlook the minor inconveniences of a silly-looking, clown-like costume.

But once one is able to conquer the dread of being seen in the silliest outfit, you are truly in for a wild ride. Imagine a free fall from heavens, nothing between and the earth. It is a minute where you are truly one with the universe after which you literally parachute back down to reality.

This is not merely adventurous, it is really a heavenly experience only a few daring alone can come to experience while they are alive. 170 words

It is a recreational and adventure sport of exploring caves. In the last century, this activity developed into a sophisticated, athletic pastime. This sport activity adventurous primarily because, we all know, caves are unknown areas under the earth, and they can really be dangerous.

The dangers may range from getting lost, to gas attack and even to death. Physical exhaustion is the major risk that leads to more serous dangers on the way to the cave or way back.

Cave hunting is really a pastime and adventure sport of many because we have got great historical reference about caves of all shapes and types, from old ages. There are cavers around the world who relentlessly pursue their dream mission of identify the myth of Aladyin’s cave.

The same way many people are interested in finding new unexplored caves to study the chemistry of cave formation, and their role in the ecology and the life and species that thrive in the darks of the earth.

Not many would believe that caves hid many mysteries like dangerous pools, huge pitfalls and labyrinthine pathways that would take a caver to nowhere at all. Getting lost in a cave is like getting buried alive.

All these risks notwithstanding, there are daredevils who pursue this sport just for fun, adventure and knowledge. 210 words

Street luge
Street luge is an extreme gravity powered activity that involves riding a street luge board. It is also referred to as a sled, down a paved road or course. Street luge is also known as land luge or road luge.

Though it is almost like skate boarding where one stands on the wheeled board and manage one’s moves, in the case of street luge the person is on a lying position looking at the sky.

The wheeled luge will be moving light flashing object and person on it will experience a kind of reeling pleasure of speed and adventure taking place at the same time. The risks involved, needless to say are many.

Since one is speeding around on a board that one probably cannot control the chances of getting injured by hitting against something are many. The casuality may be really deadly.

It is almost like a motor accident in which the drive fails to control the vehicle or the vehicle hesitates to obey the frantic control manipulation of the driver. All these risks involved, people who go for this adrenalin rush are many.

This sport is seen n the western world where the times and places for this are much common han elsewhere. 200 words

Wake boarding

Wakeboarding is a surface water sport. It involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a board of water behind a speeding boat. It is actually a combination of water skiing, snow boarding and surfing.

Since it is a surface water sport, this is not so risky as any other adventure sport. Those who can manage themselves on water for a while are able to enjoy the adventures and excitements of the see bed without much risk.

This is an exhilarating activity which involves a water skiing board on which one stands and the person holds on a rope that is attached to a speeding boat. One has to hold on both for his/her life and for the fun alike once on is on board.

The whirling and swinging of the boat will decide the amount and nature of excitement. But the risk factor cannot be ruled out. This is so because a speeding boat ahead of you and you are pulled to it every moment.

The risk of hitting against water could be really deadly, but not many such cases have been reported. So it is right to say wakeboarding is one of the safest means of adventure as well as water sport activity. 200 words

Many pharmaceutical giants try to justify clinical trials on humans to find out their (medicines’) efficacy so that they can be produced in large scale for the welfare of the whole humanity.
Essay 052
• Do you think it is right to conduct clinical trials on a few humans for the broader and larger interests of the whole humanity?

Clinical trials on humans have always been a bone of contention, and pharmaceutical giants clandestinely do such tests on poor people saying that it is for the general good of the world. In my perception, clinical trials on humans cannot be accepted on any count.

There is no denying the fact that humans are the most precious ones on this planet, and keeping their life going as long as possible is a matter of utmost importance. And for the same, medicine and medical care have a crucial role to play. However, ascertaining the efficacy of a new medicine does demand tests, and the normal practice is to run such tests on animals. But, the need for conducting such tests is on the rise due more to the mounting competition between pharmocos than to the need for developing remedial medicines.

All said and done, conducting clinical trials clandestinely or without legally binding consent is a crime against humanity because human life is no test lab and no human life is superior or inferior to any other life. So we cannot endorse the view that these tests are warranted for the well being of the whole humanity. Wellbeing of a person is as important as the wellbeing of another. This makes it clear that lives of a few cannot be sacrificed for the rest of the world. Life is so precious that no one is allowed to rule over it.

The above arguments make it clear that clinical trial on humans is anti-human . And, the arguement that ‘a few lives for the wellbeing of a larger world’ is ridiculous and against all human values. There are alternatives.

The machine is called ultra sound signal chain
Which, the developers say, would help doctors and patients alike.
It’s the latest development in medical care, and
The developers Frost and Sullivan says that this machine
Can be commercially developed within a few months

When produced commercially, this machine will be small
Enough to be made portable, and it is designed to

Some are of the opinion that art and literature are supposed to fight against the ills and evils of the society, whereas some others say, art and literature are personal expressions meant for entertaining the people.

Essay 055
• How do you look at these two view points?

It has always been a controversy whether art and literature have some social roles, or they are for their sake only. I feel that art and literature have a social role to play by criticizing the evils and bad practices of the society. This can be done in an entertaining way too.

When it comes to their responsibility of fighting against the evils of the society, it is right to look at the history of the world. We can cite innumerable examples to prove that art and literature have been instrumental to initiating changes and remedying social evils. For example, Indian freedom struggle was a success because the thinkers, artists and writers of those times had been able to project the evils of aggression, and people were able to respond to the calls of the freedom fighters.

However, there is no denying the fact that art and literature are personal expressions. It is true that people go creative and produce arts and literatures in order to express their feelings and thoughts. These feelings and thoughts have some social relevance and all their contributions naturally reflect the society they live in. The cartoons of R.K Lexman, the renowned Indian cartoonist, are typical examples. He has been able to express his feelings and fears he had of his society through his hilarious cartoon strips.

To conclude it, it is right to say that art and literature have always been powerful enough to make changes in the society. Obviously, they have helped eradicate several social evils. Of course, there are a few that are just for entertaining people.

Fire English Language
if all the elements and here I'm talking about air, water, earth and fire, the last one is probably the most feared especially when we think about the recent forest fires over the last few months in different parts of the world. Not surprisingly it pops up in several expressions in English illustrating its strength and danger as well as words associated with fire.

"Playing with fire" means doing something that will have dangerous consequences like for example standing in the middle of a forest and teasing a wild bear. Going from one bad situation into another one that is just as bad can be described as "jumping out of the frying pan into the fire". And when someone comes along when you've just left the frying pan and are sitting in the fire and tries to help you but only makes things ten times worse, they are said to be "adding fuel to the fire". But sometimes this frightening element can also take on a more light-hearted appearance. When you are describing someone who is competent but will never do anything really amazing or dynamic, you could say "they will never set the Thames on fire".

Again if two people are seen to be getting on very well with each other, they could be described as "getting on like a house on fire". Don't ask me where that expression comes from but I can assure you that it is a very common one. But then in case I'm "under fire" (under attack) for being lazy I can only suppose that the two people are getting on very well so quickly in the same way that a house burns very quickly.

Fire has a particular significance from a historical point of view at this time of year in Britain. To be more precise it's the time for bonfires and fireworks. The date is contained in this little saying: "Please to remember the fifth of November/ gunpowder, treason and plot./ We know no reason why gunpowder treason/ Should ever be forgot".

I'm sure that it could well be "the burning question" -- a matter of great interest to many to know what I'm on about and as I have no wish to make you "burn the midnight oil" -- spend hours studying till late to find the answer -- I will explain.

There was a certain Guy Fawkes whose dates were 1570 to 1606 -- in other words he lived at roughly the same time as William Shakespeare (1564-1616). Whereas Shakespeare was too anxious to keep in with his two monarchs Elizabeth 1st and later James 1st and "keep the home fires burning" -- have money to pay for his house and family -- Fawkes had other ideas and was a member of a plot to blow up James 1st and both Houses of Parliament.

Unfortunately for Guy, who had a habit of "burning the candle at both ends" -- working too many hours -- was caught late at night preparing the gunpowder under the House on November 4th and in this way thoroughly "burnt his boats" -- couldn't go back and change what he had done. Poor Guy he didn't even have an "old flame" -- a former girl friend to help him -- and he was later executed for treason. Ever since then it has been customary for families in their back gardens, villages on their greens and towns in public fields to build a big bonfire and burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes and let off fireworks on the day planned for the assassination attempt -- November 5th.

The trouble is that in the same way that advertising for Christmas seems to begin in August so too fireworks are often on sale soon after the summer holidays. In fact even as I write I can hear my neighbours (I imagine the younger ones) "fired with enthusiasm" -- greatly encouraged -- are letting them off right now although it's a least two weeks to go to the proper night. But then I don't want to go on about it too much in case I get "shot down in flames" -- heavily criticised.

You can buy fireworks almost anywhere often in small shops which like to "have several irons in the fire" (several business interests) but sometimes they find they can't take on all these projects and some of them "get their fingers burnt" and end up losing money. There are many types of firework -- the ones that turn round in circles like a Catherine wheel, the big ones that fly off like rockets, the ones you hold in your hand called "sparklers" (incidentally a slang word for eyes) down to the humblest of them all called a "squib" that merely fizzes and then explodes very gently -- another word also for a short satirical speech. Mind you when a squib gets wet, it doesn't work and we say that the speech went off like a "damp squib".

Speak about your dream destination
• Name of the place
• When do you want to be there?
• Why do you want to be there?

Well, frankly speaking, I would like to be in many distant locations. Places like, say, Sidney, Wales, Rome and so on.

Among them, I wish to be in Sidney, Australia.
Actually it has always been my dream to be there,
And I have been striving hard to get myself prepared for the same, and, I would say, this test itself is part of the same. And my plan is to be there in a year or so.

Yes, there are many reasons for my liking towards this place.
I have heard from many sources, like media, Internet and of course from my friends that Sidney is an exotic destination
and it offers something for every one.

For professionals, it is a metropolis of opportunities, for students the city offers many academic facilities, and for travelers, Sidney is a shopping enclave and so goes the list of things that Sidney offers.

And finally, my particular interest towards this place is mainly based on my profession. It is said that Australia is running short of qualified medical professionals.

And I, being one, am very much interested in pursuing a career there. And I am hopeful that I would be able to be there in the immediate future.

That is all about the distant place I would like to be in.

An instance in which you helped someone.

• When that was
• Whom you helped
• What help you offered
• What you felt after that.

Well, sir, as part of my personal life and professional life,
I have had many opportunities to help others.
Among them, I would like to speak of one which I particularly remember.

It happened last year. And it was like this:
I was on my way to Pondichery on a train.
The journey up to Coimbatore was really interesting
as I happened to meet many people, including students,
professionals and ordinary folk.

When we reached Coimbatore, as usual, a lot of passengers got in and out of the compartment. But no sooner than the train left the station, one of my newly met friends had started panicking and shouting out, that someone had stolen her bag.
She broke down like anything because she had all her belonging in that bag except her certificates.

I felt really sorry for her first, but soon, I tried to console her with encouraging words
and offered her all the help. Within a few minutes she came back to her normal mood.

When we reached Pondichery, I took her to my place, and I made her comfortable.
On the following day, I accompanied her to the hospital where she was going to attend an interview. She attended the same, and I arranged for her return trip to Kerala.

When it comes to the feelings on the incident, frankly speaking,
I didn’t expect anything, She thanked me a lot and the same made really glad.

But after some three four weeks, I received a call from her.
She told me that she got selected in the interview.
That was the best of all phone calls I have ever received.
Now she is working there, and we are thick friends.

That is all about the incident in which I helped someone.

Conservation of wild animals and maintaining of their habitat are claiming a sizeable amount of money every year. But it is argued that wild-life as such does not contribute much in accordance with the size of money it consumes every year.
Essay 011
How do you look at this argument?

I for one am of the opinion that the money nations around the world allocate for the upkeep of wildlife and their habitat is the wisest of allocations in several different counts. The argument that wildlife does not contribute proportionally is premature.

Let me prove the point by citing a small example from our surroundings. The much talked about topic across the world is excessive carbon emission and its myriad ramifications on the Planet. Unfortunately, the only solution is protecting the existing green cover. So, we need forests. Forests are the habitat of wild animals, and they both do a great job in maintaining the ecological balance of the whole Planet. Obviously, no amount will be a bigger amount if spent in this direction.

On the other hand, the argument that animals and their habitat need to produce visible material benefits in terms of the money spent is childish. We need to do ask a few simple enough questions ourselves. Firstly, what all things money is able to generate and what all things wild life and their life are able to generate? Can we re-generate forests as old as thousand years? Can we bring back an endangered species? Do we have enough money to buy out an Amazon jungle or a Silent Valley? I am sure the argument is proved unfounded.

In short, allocation of funds for the upkeep of the wild and their habitat is much worthwhile than anything else. Man has great limitations, but nature does not have any. So it would be wiser if we protect our wild life and their habitats.

It is argued that right to employment is a fundamental right and, if a State fails to engage its educated and productive manpower in some worthwhile income generating mode, it may be deemed as a case of violation of human rights.
Essay 001
• Argue for and against this view.

The argument that right to employment is a fundamental right is well founded because the educated are the ones who keep the nation growing. So their employment is the responsibility of the State. However, opinions differ when we take it as a violation of rights if the state fails in it.

Generally, it is people who constitute a state. It is their well being that makes a state a welfare state. So the State has the responsibility to put all the educated in a productive area of employment so that the latter may be able to fulfill the expectations of the former. On the other hand, if they jobless for long, it is a kind of human resource loss. This amounts to loss of human rights itself because it is people how constitute the state. So the argument is well founded.

On the other hand, failing to meet the employment needs of all the educated cannot be deemed as a violation. This is because, finding employment for all depends more on the attitude of the employable workforce than on the state’s responsibility. Much lies with the educated themselves to find venues out of their own efforts. As every right comes with a duty, every educated person is bound to show the duty vested on him or her. If they both go hand in hand, there is no violation of human rights; rather there is protection of it.

Therefore, it may be concluded that, deeming employment guarantee as a fundamental right is possible only if the educated show the duty to do their share. This may enable the State to safeguard the rights of the educated.

Some people feel that there should be constitutional guarantee for employment for all the educated human resource in line with their qualifications because they are the ones who guarantee the constitutional well being of a nation.
Essay 002
• Do you think employment guarantee is a feasible idea in your place?
• Suggest your own ways to ensure employment for all the educated.

Constitutional employment guarantee, of course, sounds great, but when it comes to its feasibility in my place, I think there are more problems than prospects. However, there are ways to assure employment for all the qualified ones so that they would safeguard the well being of their nation.

To begin with, all the educated have the right to get employed according to their qualifications and expectations. But the fact is that in a country like mine, where population is exploding astronomically, it is virtually impossible to accommodate every one in some employment. Besides, there is a great disparity between the quality of education demanded by the employment providers and the quality supplied by education service providers. Above all, meeting the expectations of all the educated does not sound a feasible idea because State as such is not that powerful.

However, there are several feasible ways to guarantee employment for all. The fact is that it would take longer time than we expect. First way out is to promote industrialization and encourage private participation in nation building. Secondly, there needs to be a system in place to produce manpower according to the availability and nature of jobs that get generated. Thirdly, there needs to be equal representation for both the genders in all spheres of life. This will make great attitudinal shifts in people. This, in turn, will encourage many people appreciate any decently paying job. These are the suggestions I have.

In short, the feasibility of constitutional employment guarantee in my place depends upon several factors. Among them, State is one, and it is just a party, but the major chunk of the job needs to come from educators, prospective employees and the employers.

Oceans are under threat

As this is the case with our Seas, do they not deserve much better treatment than what they get over the years of these so-called-human evolution and the technological and intellectual revolutions thereof. ‘They do’ is the answer.

Ever since the declaration at the Earth Summit in Brazil in 1992 that June 8 every year would be observed as Oceans Day, much water has flown down the bridges to the seas and oceans around the world. Anyway, the declaration had many lofty objectives. The role of Oceans and seas in maintaining the balance of life on earth and therefore the need to keep three fourth of the globe without pollution or with bearable amount of pollution were the ultimate objectives.

Our Ocean and Seas are maintaining the mercury levels of the world at sustainable levels, keeping the clock of rains around the world, sustaining the lives of millions of people who eke out their lives on fish stock and maritime activities, watering the lives and their hundreds of thousands of live stock and farm sectors of millions of people in water scarce countries like the ones in the Middle East and elsewhere.

They are again contributing a huge share for the food security of the world and providing a level playing field for all geographically convenient nations around the world to have their own shares of maritime trade and the revenue thereof and the never exhaustible corals and similar invaluable natural reserves and finally they humbly contribute a sizeable share of revenue through tourism to many economies.

As this is the case with our Seas, do they not deserve much better treatment than what they get over the years of these so-called-human evolution and the technological and intellectual revolutions thereof. ‘They do’ is the answer.

Our Oceans are being constantly threatened by human activity the same way our environment in the land is. Pollutions of all types contribute to this threat. Drainages, industrial effluents and exhausts, international dumping of electronic, toxic radio active substances, frequent oil slicks from container ships and their frequent wrecks, the ever increasing maritime transportation and the exhaust, oil and fuel leakages linked to it, mounting motorized fishing, run off from the shores carrying residues of pesticides and chemicals used in the agriculture and other farming sectors, and finally the ever billowing carbon bubbles getting generated from every other act of human development are some of the ways though which our oceans are getting polluted.

When dwindling fish stock stares at the lives of millions, when water needs of a sizeable number of lives on earth go dry, when clocks of rains around the world happen to run back ward or come to halt leading to poor production and food insecurity, when temperature levels cross human and habit endurance, when glaciers come to add to the woes of the seas, threatening the low lying areas and the habitat there, when our coral reefs go extinct slowly and steadily, and eventually when life on earth itself becomes near impossible, we the humans feign ignorance to all these and go on living our lives to our gluttonous full.

Hypocritically, we find it comfortable not to know that it is going to be the beginning of an end. So, before it is too late, we all need to do our shares to save the Oceans. The same way we keep our people aware of environmental pollutions, we have to have a global campaign against aggressions of all types on the seas. June 8 is the most appropriate day to have a start off.

Though the world order is global, when it comes to an attitudinal change of global dimension, it is the individual initiatives that make the bigger difference than what the institutions and international forums and parlays do. International summits, like the one held in Geneva in 1992 or the one that went on in the Bali Island last year, would come, make declarations and go winding them up. Unless we include ourselves in these declarations, unless all humans start talking and thinking in terms of the rest of the humanity in general, life on earth is going to be much more difficult in the coming days.

5 Key Strategies for a Plastic-Free Life
Focus on food.
You all know that that food packaging is your number one source of plastic waste. Along with sheer volume, there are other reasons that food-related plastic is a good place to focus your efforts. Chemicals from plastic packaging and containers leach into the stuff we eat and drink, and therefore have the biggest potential impact on our immediate health.
In addition to avoiding over-packaged foods at the supermarket, swap out plastic food-storage containers and cooking utensils and replace them with glass, ceramic, wood, or other materials. And never heating up food in any kind of plastic is a pretty easy rule to follow.
• Ban those bags.
If you forget your reusable bags at the grocery store, carry your items out by hand. After doing that a few times, you’ll probably NEVER forget your bags again! If you do find yourself with more items than you can carry, why not use a cart to get them to the car without bags? At the very least, use as few shopping bags as possible (and don’t bag items that already come in bags, like those oranges or potatoes).
Bring the plastic bags to back to the supermarket for recycling (along with any other stray plastic bags that find their way into your hands). Make it easier on yourself to remember your reusable bags for your next trip by stashing them with your shopper’s club cards, or in your car’s trunk or glove compartment.
• Stop using stupid plastic.
Some plastic is just pointless. A straw? Would it kill you to let your lip touch the glass? A plastic bag just to hold the greeting card you bought? Carry it in your hand! Plastic fork? It’ll probably break! Wash your hands and eat with your fingers. Plastic Halloween decorations? Remember, what is natural is right and more beautiful than any other decorations that you get from market.
Reuse, recycle, recreate.
Have a backup plan for the plastic that gets into your life. Find other uses for it if you can, or find out how to recycle it when you’re done. Take plastic bags to the supermarket, know what your curbside program will accept, and know how to recycle your electronics when it’s time to get rid of them. If all else fails, call up a local nonprofit and see if it can be donated. When you’re shopping, buy products packaged in recycled plastic if there isn’t a non-plastic alternative, or even look for used versions of whatever it is you need.
Or, next time you find yourself reaching for something that comes in plastic, think, “Could I make this?” You’d be surprised at how easy it is to whip up hair-care products, body lotions, cleaning products, and pretty much every plastic-packaged food at the store. Or just go without. As Dani, one of the bloggers who followed our challenge on her site News from Nowhere, told us, “I would rather get in the habit of having and using less (of plastics and everything else), than be disgruntled about it when the situation is forced upon me.”

Medical research funding in Someland

The graph compares the number of deaths caused by six diseases in Someland in 1990 with the amount of research funding allocated to each of these diseases. It can be seen that the amount of research funding in many cases did not correlate with the seriousness of the diseases in terms of numbers of death.

In 1990 there were around 0.02 million deaths from AIDS, 0.1 million deaths from leprosy, 0.3 million deaths from tropical diseases, 0.5 million deaths from diarrhea, 0.4 million deaths from malaria and 1.8 deaths from TB.

These figures can be contrasted with the amount of funding allocated to each disease. In 1990, AIDS received 180 million dollars in research funding, leprosy 80 million dollars, tropical diseases 79 million, diarrhea 60 million, malaria 50 million and TB 20 million dollars.

In conclusion, it is clear that funding allocation for disease researches and the corresponding deaths due to the diseases show that higher is the allocation fewer is the number of deaths.

An artwork you liked
What
When
Who you liked it
Well, it is really interesting to appreciate artworks.
Recently, I happened to visit an art exhibition
Hosted by a group of local artists in my place.

There were a lot of paintings, drawings, applied art forms and so on
Among them I got hooked to an artwork done by one Mr. Warrior
I do not know much of his whereabouts.

What I liked most is the way he presents his thought
Actually it was a modern art form in which he was trying to
Highlight some social issues like child abuse, female feuticide
Aggression against women and children.

It was oil on canvass, and the work was so attractive in the sense that
Ordinary folk themselves could understand the message
It was an blend of thought, creativity and imagination

And the colour combination he used looked really interesting
That he was selecting hard colours and strong strokes to represent
Ideas that are really hard pressing and that need immediate attention
In the bottom of the canvas, there was a message
Running into only four words.

“The real is not”
what I understood is this,
things we see around us
are not actual, and we do not see now much of
what is happening around.

Frankly, speaking this artwork made me think
I knew that there are so many evils working around us.
And, yes, I liked it very much.

That is all about the artwork l liked.

A machine that was developed lately
What it is
When it was developed
How it works and helps

Well, our times have a seen a lot developments
And I would like talk about a new medical machine
Developed recently, and it is going to be great help to man.

The machine is called ultra sound signal chain
Which, the developers say, would help doctors and patients alike.
It’s the latest development in medical care, and
The developers Frost and Sullivan says that this machine
Can be commercially developed within a few months

It is said that when produced commercially,
this machine will be small enough to be portable,
and it is designed to fit in ICUs, ambulances
and similar mobile triage situations.

When it comes to its medial application
It works much more efficiently than any other ultra sound based
Diagnosing device. It is very simple, and almost sound proof and
It works on a new microchip which functions like a chain does
Identifying ultrasounds one after the other and ending up with the
Last possible detection, that is and most indecipherable sound beats
This is best suited for people
who are suffering from age related ailments.

I think this chip-supported machine will revolutionize
The way geriatric care works now these days.

As our century is bound to look after greater number of
Aged people than it was before, this is medical machine
Will give the aged population a bit relief.

Yes, this is a great development, sir.

It is a fact that carbon menace looms large over the planet, and both developed and developing nations put in their best efforts to save it. However, everything is not right with our Planet though.

• What do you think are the factors that contribute to this disparity?
• How best can YOU support the planet in striking a balance?

The carbon threat our planet faces is serious enough to make the international community initiate collective efforts to save the planet. All these efforts notwithstanding, the threat is looming larger. Many factors lead to this difference, and there are ways to strike a balance.

At the fact of it, I think the rich-poor divide that exists between nations is the major factor that puts a block in front of a carbon-balanced ecosystem. Rich nations are extremely carbon intensive, whereas poor economies are unable to be less carbon intensive these days. The latter group has huge population to be taken care of and the former highly industrialized. Obviously, there is disparity between the carbon remedial measures these nations take and the size of carbon threat they pose. Besides this, great proportion of population across the world is not that bothered of their individual contributions to carbon menace.

What the most an individual can do to be eco-friendly in one’s lifestyle practices? Being an informed individual, I can follow three principles. They are responsible shopping, need-based life and ecological housekeeping. These practices will help cut down on consumerism, optimum resource utilization and reduced consumption. All these practices, if individually taken up, are powerful enough to make substantial reduction in carbon related complaints. It is a duty of one and all for the well being of all, including our Planet Earth.

To wind it up, it is right to add that nations would keep on doing whatever is possible to save the planet. But it does not mean that individuals do not have a role. Since change is possible only if individuals change, it is high time we changed our attitude to our Planet.

Responsible shopping, need-based life and ecological housekeeping are the tree major things that would keep the planet free from environmental threats.

• Comment on this concept.

Our planet is threatened. Human action is the culprit. Only humans can save it. What is the way out? Responsible shopping, need based life and ecological housekeeping, if taken up by you and me and all, can work wonders environmentally.

By definition responsible shopping means buying products and services which are very much needed for our basic life and make sure that we buy green products if possible. In this respect, it is right to say if shopping is controlled, demand can be cut down. Reduced demand means fall in production. Fall in production reduces pressure on the environment for raw material, transportation, production, consumption and so goes the list.

Closely associated with this is need based life. This is a kind of shunning luxuries and extravaganzas. We all know than man consumes and amasses much more than what he needs. This is against ecology, and it leads to ecological overshoot. So, need-based life is a right move towards saving the planet from the perils of human action.

Let me see how ecological housekeeping is going to save our planet. This concept is actually a combination of the other two. Keeping our house eco-friendly is something great. It involves several things. A simply enough action like switching off a fan when not in use, segregating domestic waste into degradable and non-degradable or recycling water or doing a little rain water harvesting etc. are part of ecological housekeeping.

Concluding it, I find it right to add that these three major eco-friendly lifestyle practices are not seriously taken by many. What I feel is that every one us has a role in making our Planet this miserable. So, we all have the duty to follow these three simple enough lifestyle practices.

Ten ways to approach a question

Better teacher-student understanding, student-friendly curriculum and teaching will be able to remove corporal punishment from schools for ever.

How far do you agree or disagree with this?

1. Punishing children for correction is a topic of discussion, and the majority does not want it. So there are suggestions as to how we can do it. A student-friendly atmosphere at school will surely make it possible. That is what I believe.
2. Punishment hardly makes any correction in children. That is what I feel. So, I think, if schools could be student-friendly, we can say good bye to corporal punishment. I have no problem fully endorsing this view.
3. What makes teachers punish children? Or, what makes children misbehave or fail to comply. Reasons galore. However, if schools are student-friendly, corporal punishment as a correction tool will die out.
4. Corporal punishment and schooling have remained twined for ages. If want to separate them and say good bye to one, there needs great efforts. Student-friendly school is a right move towards such a goal.
5. Many studies have shown that a punished child is a disturbed soul. Teaching or a teacher should not be instrumental to it. Therefore, the need for removing corporal punishment is much higher. A student-friendly school is a right move by all means.
6. Though there is saying: “spare the rod and spoil the child”, studies show that sparing the rod may save a child instead. So punishing children at academic ambiance is unfair. I believe that a student-friendly school will help a lot in sparing the rod for ever.
7. Punishing children for correction does not have many takers today. In such a context, how can we remove punishment from schools and make children fair well at the same time? I strongly feel that a student friendly atmosphere will do the job.
8. Managing students is a tough task. Still managing them by punishing is a tougher task. That is what I feel. So a student friendly atmosphere at school is a much better option than anything else.
9. School children, it is said, believe and trust their teachers more than their parents. That belief and trust can be instrumental to removing corporal punishment from schools. I stand for such an idea.
10. There are innumerable reasons for a student to by not complying. Is it possible for a teacher to address all these issues? No. But the best a teacher can do is to keep a classroom extremely student-friendly. Corporate punishment as a correction instrument will go out for ever.

Flexibility versus challenging working environments

Flexi-time in the working environment is being perceived as a better option to pool in the otherwise productive talents of mothers, housewives and retirees that go waste because of industry-specific times for profession.

• Do you think flexi-time is an idea worth pursuing?
• How, in your opinion, will the growing challenges of profession react to it?

The body is a download from ciliconindia.com
A recent survey done on 10,000 company head by Regus, a workplace solutions provider, said that 56 percent Indian companies have plans to recruit mothers as part-time workers this year. Many businesses are already using flexible work arrangement to integrate these assets, providing a family friendly and at the same time more productive work environment simply by allowing employees to work alternative hours or closer to home. But many a times, people are seen wrestling with a puzzling question - Will flexibility hurt the challenging nature in work?

According to another survey by the Society for Human Resource Management, "flex-time is the most popular alternative work schedule offered by the responding companies, with two-thirds of the companies offering such a benefit." In case of employees, most of them enjoy having flexible work schedules. Many employers have discovered that providing flexible work schedules helps increase productivity, and attract and retain employees. But how far the productivity could be retained?

In most cases, we have seen that employees opt for flexibility at the cost of their professional edge. Sometimes, they are offered job which doesn't match their qualification, and in such cases, they decide to sacrifice flexibility for the sake of a stimulating job. But that isn’t always necessary.

A surprising survey result was that few managers in high-stress jobs take advantage of flex jobs, while less than one-third of interested men and only one-half of interested women have ever used flex. Across all age groups, the number of individuals who have used or currently use flex is significantly low. Among various reasons, the most interesting one was that flex options signal a career dead end. Why? Well, somewhere or the other there is a feeling in people's mind that flexibility does hurt the challenging nature in work, which is very important to learn and grow in career.

Here, two suggestions from the global management consulting firm Bain & Company for effective flex job implementation can be key ones. Firstly, the companies must tailor flexible programs to meet specific employee needs. As individual employees do look for many different things, one size does not necessarily fit all. They need to segment employees by their varying needs and then develop a meaningful set of flex work options from which employees can pick and choose.

From those employees who are considering stepping down in their career to gain flexibility, how much productivity and commitment can we expect? Or what would be the solution for those who very often wrestle with career vs. flexibility puzzle? These are the few questions that make the puzzle even more puzzling. Perhaps a good flex work model with carefully tailoring job requirements to the various age and career-goal segments of a company's talent pool may provide the suitable answer.
