Of late, people’s dependence on goods and services from distant locations is on the rise.
·         What do you think are the reasons?
·         Is there any danger in this increasing dependence?

Sourcing goods and services from afar is not a new trend; rather it has been there all along. But, now it is a little higher. There must be reasons and, I think, this trend may raise a few concerns. Let me see the reasons and dangers.

The primary reason is, today, people enjoy great financial independence. Coupled with this is the availability of goods from distant locations thanks to freer mobility generated by globalization. For example, people are prepared to buy things of their choice at any cost, and their need for such things are met my service providers like sellers and importers.

Secondly, there is huge drop in the time gap between sourcing distant thing and taking it to the consumer. For example, we know that fruits are perishable goods, but today there are faster movement modes and scientific ways to keep them for long. As a result, people of my place enjoy fruits from Australia, Americas, Malaysia and China.

Let me see the concerns. Firstly, it raises the need for transportation which is not that environment friendly. For example, freight movement involves all modes of travels causing oil burn out, exhaust and temperature hike. Second issue is the packing and processing involved. For example, goods and services from distance do not come as they are produced in their respective location; rather they are covered either physically or financially. It hikes both waste and cost alike.

Winding it up, it is made clear that there are varying reasons for the rise in human dependence on distant commodities. Coming to its negative implications, there are a few. In my opinion, people need to learn to live with what is available around them. It’s good to the Planet.
