Oceans around the world are increasingly being threatened by human intervention, and this has greater impact on nations world over.

In what all ways do oceans get threatened?
What impact does this threat have on human life?

Oceans support human existence and it is impossible for man to lead a life excluding oceans. But today, oceans around the world are facing threats due to human aggression and, of course, this has huge impact on humanity.

Humans threaten the oceans in many ways. Firstly, pollutions of all types; such as industrial effluents, domestic waste, chemical and pesticide wash off from farms, exhaust and discharge from marine transports, dumping of destructive wastes and ship wrecks and resultant oil spill and slick have considerably damaged the natural habitat and diversity of oceans. Secondly, over exploitation of oceans by vested interests has destroyed our oceans a lot. Apart from these, experiments in the seas, especially nuclear and military, also upset the oceans largely. Finally, global warming is a silent killer of oceans. In short, oceans are international dump yards.

Since human life is dependant on oceans, the destruction of oceans has wider ramifications on human society. The flood and water security, a major share of which is contributed by oceans, is questioned. Since oceans provide employment opportunities to many marine dependant communities, their destruction may affect their livelihood. Moreover, increasing threat to oceans weaken the revenue of marine economies around the world, thus hampering their entire progress.

To sum up, since oceans are essential for human substance, its richness and marine diversity have to be preserved to ensure the well being of entire humanity. This calls for a coordinated, multi-pronged action from across the world.
