The Internet as a source of information is widely and indiscriminately being used by people who are engaged in various researches.
• Do you think the Net is likely to improve the quality of research?
• Is it in any way an unhealthy practice to fall back on the Net for everything?
Research as such demands a lot of resources and its quality depends on several factors including information. And when it comes to over dependence on the Net for everything, it is not so healthy a practice. Let me prove it.
Research, as we all know, is a very serious activity involving multiple factors. Major ones being hypotheses, assumptions, related information, data, observations, processing, to mention a few. In this context, it can be said that right and required information is just one of the factors, and the same can contribute a substantially to a research work.
However, the point about quality is not just gathering information. It is much more than that. So, I tend to say that making use of the Net mindlessly is not going to take the quality of research any higher; rather it may add on to its success. For example, a research work without a right hypothesis, but stuffed with information is a poor research in more ways than one.
So, how right it is to turn to the Net for everything? What I feel is that it is good to be Net savvy. But, basically, man has an instinct to seek and find information. This involves may faculties like initiative, inquisitiveness, hard work, logical thinking, raising doubts, consulting people, reading and observing the media, and so goes the list. All these activities can sharpen man’s intellectual acumen. Unfortunately, falling back on the Net for everything may harm this faculty. So, in a way, it is not harmless.
In short, trying to see how Net influences research, I find it right to add that Net is just a potential source of information; one of the elements of research. So also over dependence on the Net is better avoided. Research, in my opinion, is a self-driven search to find something new.

The most abstract concept called ‘time’ has been redefined by citizens on the Net (netizens), and they say ‘that which does not exist’ is time.
• How appropriate is this definition from a netizen’s point of view?
• How differently has time been defined these days?
The number of people who believe that time does not exist is increasing. It is true. But, this heightened view on time, in my opinion, is a technology enabled state of mind. Obviously, there is ‘time’, and it is being defined differently.
Looking at the propriety of the definition of time, I tend to say that the only one thing that man understands throughout his life is the persistent and all encompassing hold of time on man. However, if we look at time from today’s netizens’ angle, it may be right in the sense that there is nothing called borders or day or night or week days or holidays. What they have is a virtual space which does not recognize time.
For example, today it doesn’t matter where one is, when one works, what one does and who one is. What matters most is whether one is connected to the Net or not. Actually, it is technology enabled state of mind.
Therefore, it is right to say there are other definitions. Let us see how differently it is getting defined. A person who invests is stocks defines time as money; either gained or gone. How about film and sports stars? It is career. And finally, how do industrialists define time? For them, time is investment, Above all, for those who are terminally ill, time is either hell or heaven. So time is getting defined differently today.
In short, there is nothing beyond or free from time. The modern IT enabled definition of time that it does not exist is just one of its countless definitions. As time passes, there will be more and more definitions. That is what I feel.

Students who went for higher education from five schools
The table of data we have here shows us the performance of five secondary schools based on the number of students who went for higher studies for a period of six years starting from 1995.
Let us begin with the figures of Royston Academy. In 1995, only 50% students went for higher education, and the following years recorded slight increases and took the figure up to 60 in 1999, and the year 2000 did not show any difference. Coming to Greyston Academy, the story is different. In 1995, it enjoyed the highest performance among all schools, 90%, but the following years saw remarkable falls, slowly taking the figure down to 70%; a fall by more than 20%, and the biggest downswing was in 1995, above 10%.
Harble secondary had a huge upward spiral; nearly three times increase, from 30 to 80 and in 1990-2000, it jumped from 60 to 80, the all time high rate. But Fairfield Girls posted a consistent performance and the figures stood between 65 and 79, and the biggest rise was in 1999-2000 period. And finally, Crackend Boys did not make any headway. It stayed between 60 and 62.
In short, except Greyston High, all other schools were making better performances every passing year, of course with a few exceptions. That is the end of the report.

Fish canning
Fresh fish has a very short shelf life, but canning it allows us to eat fish at any time of the year and in any temperature. How does this process of canning work, and what are the steps involved? I will now describe how fish is canned.
After the fish is sent to the cannery, it is cleaned carefully and some parts are removed. The fish is washed thoroughly, and then drained. The next stage is soaking in salt. This helps to preserve the fish. Next, the fish is put into cans which are then sealed with lids. The cans of fish are then heated in large pressure cookers. This kills the bacteria and ensures that the fish remains safe to eat. After the tins cool, labels are added and the cans are put into boxes. Finally, the boxes are stored in a warehouse, ready for delivery to wholesalers and retail outlets.
Canning fish enables people everywhere to enjoy healthy great-tasting food. Why not try some tuna or salmon in a sandwich today!

The net and the questions it poses
1.
The Internet as a source of information is widely and indiscriminately being used by people who are engaged in various researches.
• Do you think the Net is likely to improve the quality of research?
• Is it in any way an unhealthy practice to fall back on the Net for everything?
2.
Since search engines on the Net are able to meet almost all the information needs, the need for alternative information sources is waning of late.
• Do you think the advent of search engines is a welcome development?
• How relevant are alternative information source in your opinion?
3.
Some people say the advent of the Net has left man confined to smaller personal spaces, whereas there are people who hold the view that it has cast man far and wide.
• Look at the views and say what you feel about the advent of the Net?
4.
The information explosion that is happening around us has brighter and seamy sides.
• Try to identify a few prominent ones.

A write up on what green jobs are, and how the future of green job is
going to be. By www.siliconindia.com
Scope
Around one million green jobs will be generated in India over the next two years, according to estimate headhunters. In 2008, a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report had highlighted that by 2025 India would see the creation of nine hundred thousand green jobs in the area of biogas alone.
Definitions
Green jobs, as defined by UNEP, refers to work in agricultural, manufacturing, research and development or administrative activities that contribute to preserving environmental quality, and help in protecting the ecosystem and biodiversity.
Area
They may include architects designing energy-efficient buildings, organic farmers in villages, environmental engineers or even plumbers installing water-recycle systems. While green architecture, mechanical and chemical engineering, biotechnology and environmental management are the most lucrative and sought-after professions in the new, green sector, policy-making for renewable energy and natural resources management is not far behind.
Emerging Academic Interests
The Suzlon group, a pioneer in exploring renewable energy sources, has signed an MoU with TERI University in March 2009, to institute an M.Tech in Renewable Energy Engineering and Management. The need for sustainable development has sensitized a corpus of scientists, managers and leaders to the importance of environmental protection. From just 48 students in 2006, the university now has 260. Almost all these students have been placed in companies like TCS, Reliance Infrastructure and IL&FS, and are involved in green activities.
Future
One of the biggest future recruiters in green jobs is likely to be real estate, with green buildings coming up fast. A recent study by Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) estimates that 45 million square feet of additional green building-space in India will be ready by 2012. Companies like Wipro, Microsoft, Cognizant, TCS, Infosys and Oracle are either operating - or planning to - from green offices, revealed the study. "There will be a huge demand for people who can certify green buildings, and architects and project planners who are adept in green building norms.
For those looking for an alternative career, the green sector offers various opportunities. Working with an NGO, or a training programme on sustainability, can help one gain the necessary perspective. Organisations like ACC Cement, Ecosmart, SGS India, TCS, Reliance Energy and M&M offer internships and may even recruit the interns.
Seamy side
Unfortunately, Green jobs are still not considered as lucrative. And that's mainly because of a lack of awareness. While entry-level salaries are about Rs. 3.5 to Rs. 4.5 lakh per annum, packages in the mid-level can vary from Rs. 14-20 lakh and a senior professional could even command anything between Rs. 45 and 60 lakh, said Balaji of MaFoi.

Will digital books replace hardcovers?
Downloaded article from ciliconindia.com
The sales of digital books in India is expected to pick up in coming months but that will not impact the aficionados love for hardcover books as has been the case in the West, say major publishers here.
India may see good rise in sales of digital books as downloading them on mobiles becomes a possibility but their growth trajectory may not be same as in the West, they say.
"New technology creates a new reader. Digital books will have their share of techno enthusiasts who will read them. But, that will not impact print versions of books,"
Vivek Mehra, MD and CEO, SAGE Publications says it is very difficult to believe that digital books will replace paper books.
"Since the digital age, HP sells more printers than they did before the proliferation of the Internet. Not all content is easily readable in digital format. Most content is available on a subscription. An individual could license the use of a journal’s back-files for a year but the price to purchase would be prohibitive for an individual," says Mehra.
India is the world's third-largest book market and with rise in literacy rate, the non-academic book market in India is growing at a rate of around 15 per cent which itself shows the popularity of printed books here.
At last month's DSC Jaipur Literary Festival, Chairman and CEO of the Penguin Group, John Makinson said, "the idea of the book dying comes up all the time which is wrong. Books matter more in India than anywhere else we publish them."
A report by market research company Forrester acknowledges that the dynamics for higher growths for ebooks vests with consumer markets like India and China. Advantage India lies in its high quality and low cost of output.
"Physical books will always have a market. Digital books should not be seen as replacing them but should be seen as an added source of revenue through a new product line that caters to and targets a different set of audience,"
"Ebooks have a lot of advantages. If you do not want to take the full book, then pay only for the chapters you want. Once publishers start digitalising their content, ebooks will be very cheap," says Gupta.
Although audio books have been around for a long time in India but they have been mainly targetting children. But, the trend is changing now.
"Audiobooks are more effective than other type of books. The listener feels connected and the learning and understanding is more in an audio book than a normal book," says Abhilash R, Business Development Head, audiobooksindia.com, an online portal for audio books.
Apart from targeting the people who can not read, audio books can also be handy for older people whose eyesight keeps getting worse with age. Also, they are environment friendly as they do not use ink and paper.
"Audio books have a very niche market now. With proliferation of technology, their sales will increase in future. Also, people need to be educated about their uses," says Kunal Pancholi, co-founder of reado.com, a company dealing in audiobooks.

Ecological benefit is taken by ecologists as a viable option to maintain green cover. But there is an argument that this will halt growth as the benefit offered may not be at par with the production, if the land is used differently.
Discuss both the views and say what you feel about the concept.
Ecological benefit: an allowance paid to those landowners who have some measures of green cover and are ready to keep it in tact for the well-being of the planet.
Visit. www.jpsukham.blogspot.com
Speedy carbon recycling is the need of the hour and ecologists find ecological benefit as a feasible option. But the concern that it would slow down growth is not unfounded. I feel that ecological benefit is worth promoted.
It is the talk of the world that our planet need to be protected from the peril of carbon. Since green cover is the only solution, ecologists are of the view that the existing green need to keep to meet the challenges. Naturally, there is need for individual participation. This in turn demand government support. If governments can meet the expectation of people who has their own green cover, they would kept it for the well being of the world. So offering decent ecological benefits to individuals would help a lot in making the Planet breath easy.
However mere green coven maintenance wouldn’t meet the needs of the world population. The concern that it would slowdown growth needs to address. Today humans are much better placed with efficient technologies to be applied in agriculture to augment production. There are research and development options to meet the rising need of man too. Finally human themselves can control population. This will keep his need controled and the Planet may be eased to keep the population feed well.
Looking at both the views it is right to concluded that future of the Planet lying on the hands of all individual and uniform participation alone would make a difference in carbon management. Ecological benefit sound so excellent a concept to me.

Private players engaged in the development exercises generate fresher job opportunities on a regular basis. However, the numbers of educated and skilled people who remain jobless do not show any downswing.
• What all reasons can you attribute to this disparity?
• How far is it right to say being jobless is a personal choice?

It is very much visible that private players contribute greatly towards generating employment. Unfortunately, there is hardly any let up in unemployment. Obviously, there are solid reasons for this, and, to some extent, some people stay jobless out of their will.
It is a fact that private sector is the biggest employment provider these days. Then why is there rise is unemployment too? Primary reason is there is great disparity between the number of people who get qualified and the number of openings generated. Secondly, the new generation institutions out thousands of people with poor qualifications. Unfortunately, today’s profit-driven private players want but the best. Thirdly, it is right to say, development exercises get concentrated in urban areas where there is tough competition when it comes to recruitment. There are many other minor factors, too.
In this respect it is right to add that a small percentage of work force remains jobless out of their choice. This happens when private players happen to demand greater contribution, dedication and commitment from new recruits. This is not acceptable for many modern job seekers. They feel it right to be more comfortable to be jobless than doing a job that may give them some discomfort.
For example, in my place, many youngsters wait for ages to get a government job which, unfortunately, is very few in number. Obviously, such people could go for some available jobs in private sector and simultaneously work their way towards their dream jobs. But not many are ready for such an attitude.
In short, though rise in unemployment despite private interventions has several reasons, in a away a small part of the productive workforce prefer to stay jobless. This is not fair and there needs a shift in people’s attitude to work whether it is private or government.

Second part of things to be kept in mind while doing reading
1. Where there are equal number of matching questions and matches, one wrong selection will make another one wrong. Five questions and five options. Four right selections will make the fifth obviously right.
2. Fewer are the number of choice; greater is the chance to get it right. Eliminating the wrong one takes you close to the answer. Three options. One is eliminated. There is fifty-fifty chance with the remaining two options.
3. Try to have enough synonyms for common words. Mock at, ridicule, parody, make fun of, laugh at, jeer etc. mean almost same. So questions may have one of these words and the body part will have another one of these.
4. So is the case with antonyms: well off-poor, strong-weak, brave-coward etc.
5. Huge paragraph should not scare you. The first or/and last sentence will give you what it is all about.
6. As questions get finished, mark out the paragraphs that have been done.
7. The area which gives you a paragraph heading will give you at least one more answer. So mark out that part. So you can avoid reading the whole para again.
8. If you are sure that you have got para heads right, write them against all corresponding paragraphs. It saves you time reading them second time for another answer like yes or no, true or false or a gap fill.
9. Summary of a paragraph or a few paragraphs may come with gaps to be filled. Look at: full stops, commas, semicolons, clauses- conditional-sub and main.
10. A missing word after a full stop is easy to identify. A word before a full stop is easy as well. And if the exact middle part of the sentence is missing, it is easier too. Read aloud sentences with filled in words.
11. Singular words for plural ones, plural words for singular ones, continuous form for bare forms, bare forms for continuous forms, past word for present and present word for past and the like are critical.
12. So is the case with wrong prepositions, adding one when there is no need for one, failing to do one where is need for one and the like are very important sensitivities of reading.
13. Constant reading may make you predict answers. Never leave the string of thought a sentence has while reading it. If a sentence begins this way, it has to end this way. This sense comes only when you read variety to writings.
14. Some answers may give indication/s to following answers. Like a No answer will make you predict a multiple choice’s answer or a gap fill sentence.
15. Remember, please, every point counts and every point is counted. For example, different readings have different band builds.
16. However, randomly, we can say, a 24 will give you 6. A 28 will give 6.5. and 29 will get you 7. But, 30 or 31 or 32 or 33 will not get you anything, but a 34 will get you 7.5. So never underrate a point. I repeat, every point counts and every point is counted.
A word of caution. Always try to do fresh readings. Doing a reading second time does not help. Used reading gives you clues. It will give you a wrong confidence. It won’t work in an exam condition. You should have done minimum 10 fresh readings you sit the test. Always remember, an ordinary reader like you can get 20 answers right if you do a test without any preparation. So, all your preparation is to take this 20 up to 30. It’s no big deal either. Ajaypeesdoc. 27.7.011

Expatriate communities -other nationals living in foreign lands- often take out protest marches and demonstrations to invite the attention of the government towards injustice or rights violations. Some say expatriates do not have the right to do so. Some others claim that injustice needs to be protested against no matter where it happens.
Essay 074
• How do you look at these view points?
With migration becoming more and more popular, many nationals living in foreign countries happen to take out marches against rights violations and injustice. There are differing views on whether it is right to do so. In my opinion, it is right to do so when human rights violations take place.
To substantiate this, I would like to cite an example on the same that has been reported recently in the media. It is reported that Indian nationals in Malaysia had been suffering from human rights violations ranging from racial and linguistic discriminations. And the Indian community in that place took out marches, and the police suppressed it saying that it is unlawful. But the international community interfered in the issue and it was found that there were cases of human rights violation. It ruled that internationally recognized human rights should not be violated no matter where it takes place.
When it comes to the view that expatriates have no right to raise their voice, it could be argued that expatriates are supposed to be abiding by the laws and regulations of the land. They need to find out legal and peaceful venues to make their voices heard. That is, it is their duty to keep restrained and try all right channels for inviting attention, instead of jumping into protests. They should not be blinded by the fact that they can protest against anything in the behest of human rights.
Therefore, I feel that, in this fast shrinking world order, rights violations need to be discouraged by all means. And for the general well being of the guests and hosts, both the parties should show restrained. However, rights violation, wherever it happens, is against humanity.

Space scientists around the world are exploring the possibilities of space tourism on a large scale as there are many takers for the same.
Essay 068
• Do you think it is a good idea to explore space for tourism?
• What disadvantages does such a move entail?
In this world of innovations and developments, space technology is advancing faster, and people are fascinated by this novel concept and its commercial possibilities in future. Though it is an interesting and trendsetting idea, its negative aspects cannot simply be ruled out.
If a concept like space tourism becomes real, it will be one of the huge achievements for humans. Touring through the space will offer chances to experience adventures appreciate the mystery and see the unseen and it would satisfy man’s long-cherished ambition. So it is clear that there are a lot of takers for this tourism, and it can be one of best platforms to make money from the otherwise useless outer space. And finally, those nations that achieve this technological fiat will surely enjoy international superiority.
Barring these brighter sides of this innovative concept, this has its own darker sides as well. The most prominent one is that this project requires huge investments by way of developing space vehicles, training of personnel; making space stations for stay etc. Another point is that it is very risky because the chances of success are equal to that of failures. Therefore, it will be a life and death proposition. In addition to all these, it may not be an accessible concept for the not-so-well off as it is highly expensive.
Thus, from the above inferences, it can be concluded that space tourism has equally powerful positive and negative aspects, but it does not seem to be bothering the negligibly small minority of the world that awaits it to become real.

Four questions
1.
Celebrations, as a matter of fact, are expected to cement/reinforce certain values that have been peculiar to a culture and followed for ages.
• Do you think celebrations in your place meet this expectation?
• How far are today’s celebrations meeting this expectation?
• Would you agree with the view that today’s celebrations meet this expectation?
• How different are celebrations today compared to past, say some 10 years before?
2.
There is a view that, as celebrations are cultural practices being followed by people for ages, there should not be any change in the way they are celebrated But, there is another view that change is the order of the day, and celebrations cannot but change.
• How warranted is it to keep celebrations as they have always been?
• How far do you support the view that celebrations need to change as life changes?
3.
Celebrations are no more cultural events meant for fostering social and cultural values; rather they are occasions, extravagant and commercial.
• Try to prove that this statement is right. You may cite examples from your life of surroundings to drive in a point.
4.
Some people claim that celebrations are cultural events meant for better human coexistence. So there is no problem celebrations absorb changes as times and people change.
• How far can you support or oppose this view?

• How warranted is it to keep celebrations as they have always been?

Though change is the only constant thing in human life, there are certain things that need to be kept free from changes. They are cultural practices like celebrations. However, in my opinion, celebrations too need to absorb changes as life changes.
It is a fact that celebrations are age-old social instruments being handed over from generations to generations, and these social events have their own typical characteristics associated with different cultures. These events are periodically celebrated to cement human values and impart the same among the upcoming generation. In this context it is import to note that there should not be any willful effort to change the fabrics of celebrations.
For example, Christmas is celebrated world over. And the idea being reinforced is the birth of Christ and the redemption of man through Him. This is a culturally transported idea being carried forward in several different ways. And this process of sustaining that cultural knowledge defers though.
However, it is quite common that man knowingly or unknowingly picks up changes in his life as he gets in touch with other cultures. This is much more common today as man is moving far and wide. Obviously, he is likely to pick up a thing or from other cultures, and adopt them in his life. This is an involuntary action which need not be frowned upon. I think man needs to accommodate such changes.
In short, cultural values associated with celebrations need to be kept as much as possible. This does not mean that man needs to insulate himself from changes. Rather he needs to absorb ineffectual changes that do not harm his very cultural values.

• How warranted is it to keep celebrations as they have always been?
• How far do you support the view that celebrations need to change as life changes?

Celebrations: The social science behind them
By. Jaypee
What is the social science behind celebrations? Have we ever thought of how would our life be like without celebrations? Has anyone ever had the inclination to wholeheartedly participate in a particular celebration which is not his/her celebration? What purpose does a celebration serve when it is done in isolation? And finally, if celebration is an occasion for better human well being, cannot all celebrations be participated by all? It is the last question I would like to answer in a social-scientific perspective. I think this line of thinking has got some relevance in today’s world of individual, polarized and nuclear celebrations?
What is a celebration?
It is an event that marks a special occasion. This may happen in a person’s life, family, school, community, society or the whole country!
They may include birthdays, presentation day, the opening of a new building in the community, or those days the whole nation celebrates - when our victorious cricket team is welcomed home.
Strengths of celebrations
If we look at the greater strengths every individual society enjoys in these days of polarized world of individual successes, we can see that celebrations down the ages, celebrations pertaining to individuals, families, societies, communities and nations, have contributed greatly to strengthening their social fabrics. This contribution is a kind of input to integration, and this is meticulously being done by people of all ages without knowing the very fact that they are doing something that cannot be equated in terms of any cache of money human exchequer could hold. So we are societies unique and at the same time different in our own ways.
‘In social science parlance, celebrations are periodic reinforcements that every society and individual needs to have for their own better subsistence in the constantly changing social orders of all times’. These celebrations themselves may take up changes, but the changes they take up due to their being subject to changes in attitudes, influences and other socio economic forces have a rare quality of adjusting themselves with the society they represent.
This ubiquitous nature of celebrations makes people of all times absorb the changes as they are, and the days that follow coolly accept the fact that a particular celebration has taken up a ‘timely’ change in its form. What form we make it to have today is its ‘societal actual’ form, because it is not the form that keeps the social fabrics strengthened, rather it is the state of mind that celebration brings in to the minds of the people that does the miracle.
Weakness of celebrations
Do celebrations have some weaknesses? Or are they able to make some kind of weakening in the social, personal and cultural order of an established society? Social scientists say these celebrations are as constructive and strengthening as they are destructive and weakening. How does it happen?
It is hard to believe that celebrations have done many damages to society. These events are free times, and people do have a tendency to take everything for granted when this or that not-socially-acceptable activity is carried out during a celebration.
People conveniently cut it into what they call, it-is-not-everyday-we-get-to-do this or that. But in real terms, the licensing spree a celebration puts in the minds of the growing generation gets rooted deep as they grow up. And celebrations recur every year. When there is regularity for something, there is room for more possibilities and habit building. Possibilities portent practices.
When it comes to practices, it is worth remembering that unless they are good, they are worst. No celebration should be allowed to extend venues to pick up practices that disrupt the fabric of a society. Celebrations are for cementing healthy social activities; healthy social coexistence of people beyond borders set by religions, faiths and the so-called philosophies.

Is it the alarming rise in population that makes the world more food insecure? Or, it is the phenomenal fall in agricultural production that keeps the world hungry?
• How do you find these views?
Food crisis is real world over. Population rise and fall in production are two of several other reasons that could be attributed to hunger. Of course, these two are just two of those factors.
Let me see how rising population contributes to this issue. It is a fact that when there are much more mouths to be fed than what is there to keep feed them with, food crisis is sure to happen. But, this is not always true. For example; millions of Indians go to bed hungry every day. This is not because India does not have enough grains to feed them. But it doesn’t have a fool-proof Public Distribution System (PDS) in place. For millions, food is not affordable, too. The rich poor divide is the real culprit here.
Moving on to the other poser, I think it is partly true that fall in production leads to food crisis. This situation is necessitated more by emerging non-agricultural opportunities than by anything else. Agriculture as a profession has lost its sheen and new generation is going after white color and blue color jobs. Naturally, production comes down. However, there are instances to prove that many rich countries have developed super productive crops, and they are able to produce surplus food, too. Here again, it is the rich-poor divide that stands on the way of food security.
In brief, it is right to say that the world has all the resources to eliminate food crisis. It is neither rising population nor fall in production that causes it. It is the rich poor divide that makes millions go to hungry beds everyday.

An instance in which you helped someone.
• When that was
• Whom you helped
• What help you offered
• What you felt after that.
Well, sir, as part of my personal life and professional life,
I have had many opportunities to help others.
Among them, I would like to speak of one which I particularly remember.
It happened last year. And it was like this:
I was on my way to Pondichery on a train.
The journey up to Coimbatore was really interesting
as I happened to meet many people, including students,
professionals and ordinary folk.
When we reached Coimbatore, as usual, a lot of passengers got in and out of the compartment. But no sooner than the train left the station, one of my newly met friends had started panicking and shouting out, that someone had stolen her bag.
She broke down like anything because she had all her belonging in that bag except her certificates.
I felt really sorry for her first, but soon, I tried to console her with encouraging words
and offered her all the help. Within a few minutes she came back to her normal mood.
When we reached Pondichery, I took her to my place, and I made her comfortable.
On the following day, I accompanied her to the hospital where she was going to attend an interview. She attended the same, and I arranged for her return trip to Kerala.
When it comes to the feelings on the incident, frankly speaking,
I didn’t expect anything, She thanked me a lot and the same made really glad.
But after some three four weeks, I received a call from her.
She told me that she got selected in the interview.
That was the best of all phone calls I have ever received.
Now she is working there, and we are thick friends.
That is all about the incident in which I helped someone.

All crimes are by-products of the society wherein these crimes take place. So punishing offenders exclusively on the basis of evidences is against reason.
• How do you look at this argument?
• Do you think all crimes are by-products of the milieu?
Though crime and punishment are common in all societies, there are differing views on punishment. Some say, mere evidence is not enough to justify it. This argument sounds rather acceptable to me too because a great number of crimes are circumstantial.
My only argument favouring this idea is that there are willful crimes and crimes forced by circumstances. When it comes to circumstances, we cannot separate an offender from his or her milieu. For example, a man may be forced to do a crime out of the pressures exerted by his surroundings. It is out of self defense or pressure for existence, one may be forced to do a crime.
This act in legal parlance may be a crime. But as per human reason, it is an act that justifies one’s existence. Here a few mere evidences that somebody has seen him or her commit an act of crime does not justify punishment.
However, we cannot brand all crimes as by-products of the milieu. There are criminals who are chronic criminals. They are incorrigible and their life is a great threat to others. For example, there are many people who commit crimes to satisfy their personal criminal interests. They cannot be corrected and their primary aim is to make money or destroy others or something like that. We cannot call these criminals or their crimes by-products of the milieu.
Though all is said, we need to understand the fact that all crimes invite punishment. But when it is a matter of survival, justice system needs to look into the circumstances that went into the making of a criminal act.

There is a growing tendency among poor nations to allow foreign universities to provide education by establishing the latter’s own academic institutions inside the country. This development is both advantageous and disadvantageous.
• Try to find out whether its advantages can outweigh its disadvantages.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is increasingly being promoted by poor nations. As a result, many foreign universities are allowed to provide education directly to the growing economies. This has both flip and seamy sides.
Let me identify the major advantages. The first thing is that it makes global education infrastructure local. As a result, people of developing economies can access world-class education without much effort. Secondly, the presence of foreign universities may encourage competition and, thereby, national universities will also go higher in quality standards. And thirdly, overseas education service providers in a nation gives a little fillip to overall academic infrastructure. This may ensure better Supply Chain Management (SCM) in education.
Moving on to the seamy side of this development, there are quiet a few things. The primary problem is that these universities are not going to provide education in the grassroots levels. This is followed by another pitfall that these education providers invest hugely and they expect great returns. Naturally, the fee structure will be unaffordable to the majority. Obviously, the democratic nature of education will get undermined.
Besides all these, there is yet another danger of over concentration on specialization in education. This makes the elites of developing nations reap the benefits leading to two types of educated workforce. And finally, to cap it all, there is a danger of manpower loss as well. People with the extra edge of foreign university education may go for greener pastures outside their nations. This is a national loss in many counts.
In short, allowing foreign universities to operate in developing nations is good to some extent. However, the above findings are enough to prove that its advantages in no way outweigh its disadvantages. There is great imbalance.

Reservation and concessions: minority status vs economic status
1.
Many people in the behest of their minority status happen to enjoy great reservations and concessions whereas great many people who belong to upper social classes are reeling under extreme poverty and deprivation.
• How do you look at this state of affairs prevalent in poor nations?
2. Ajaypeesdoc. 22.7.011
So some people say that reservations and concessions extended to people need to be strictly on the basis of one’s economic status whereas there are others who feel that such a move would sabotage the welfare of the minority in general.
• Which view do you support and state why? You take examples from your surroundings to support your stance.

Priorities differ when women take up job offers, and why weigh up several things before they say ‘yes’. Men, on the other hand, jump into attractive offers and make the most out of their jobs.
• What do you think are the constraints women face in your place when it comes to taking up a job?
• What are the advantages men enjoy in this respect?
3.
Metros are buzzing with activity as a result of developments that happen overnight. This is an opportunity for great many but a problem for some.
• What do you think are the problems and prospects of metros that face quick change?

Waste management is becoming a serious problem world over. Many people suggest that there should be a new tax called waste-management tax to be imposed on those who generate waste.
Essay 057
• How warranted is this idea in your opinion?
We need to impose a new tax on manufacturers who pack their products in non-degradable materials. It has become impossible these days to buy something without a little waste attached with it. Therefore, I feel it is a good idea to impose some waste management tax on manufacturers.
Our life has come to a new phase, where waste has become a by-product of our comforts, and since there seems to be no U-turn from this state of affairs, we need to find ways to recycle or manage the wastes that get generated on a daily basis. Moving and managing waste has become a severe headache to the corporations, municipalities and local self government organs all over the country. Also, there are innumerable instances of fund and infrastructure shortage to manage the waste. Coupled with these is the outbreak of contagions.
Waste management tax is highly warranted. It goes without saying.
Coming to who is to be held responsible for this: the consumer or the manufacturer? I think it is the duty of the manufacturer to chip in a share of his profit to raise a national fund on waste management. It is not civic to let any organization: local, national, or multi-national, come up and operate their businesses anywhere and go scot-free when it comes to the after-effects of their products’.
To conclude it, there needs to be a new tax regime to earmark a sizeable share from the turnovers of all manufacturers, and allocate those funds for the wise management of wastes. This is primarily for the general well-being of the public.

• Try to find out whether its advantages can outweigh its disadvantages.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is increasingly being promoted by poor nations. As a result, many foreign universities are allowed to provide education directly to the growing economies. This is both advantageous and disadvantageous.

Bigger families are passé (old fashioned) and smaller families are in practice. This family order is more disadvantageous than advantageous.
• Try to prove that it is true.
You may take example/s from your surroundings to prove your point?
We are in a world of great changes, and such changes are seen in social structure too. As a result, what we have now are nuclear families in the place of bigger joint families. Unfortunately, the former one is at more disadvantages than the latter.
Though nuclear family structure looks attractive in several different ways, it is suffering a lot many disadvantages compared to their counterparts of the past. Primarily, small families are basically selfish and more demanding. This is no good social sign. Secondly, children in nuclear families are deprived of many genuine qualities that would have inherited from their grandparents. Thirdly, today, many such families suffer from isolation, lack of mature counsel and consultation. Above all these, these families happen face divides in society like, rich-poor, young-old, productive-unproductive, better educated-poorly educated and so goes the list.
When we position these factors with the old, bigger families, what we find is greater social, personal and familial satisfaction. For example, there were great counsel and guidance from the elders of the family. Children were safer, stronger and independent. Obviously, the younger generation always had a kind of moral support for everything they did. If we look at the social atmosphere itself, we can see there were great possibilities for mutual help, participation and understanding. Selfishness was almost a crime, greed was almost non-existent and, above all, life was more social than individual or self centered.
So it is proved that bigger families stand to gain greater advantages than smaller families of our times. However, since there is no ‘U’ turn from this shift of family structure, it is a good idea to make the most out of smaller families.

There is a growing concern on the fact that younger generation is concentrating more on real time technology and its possibilities than on their society and its related responsibilities.
• How genuine is this concern in your opinion?
• How best does real time technology help the young?
It is fact that real-time technology makes the young generation spare sizeable amount of time on its possibilities. Naturally, this is at the cost of their societal bearings. But, we cannot ignore the fact that this technology helps them in different ways.
Today’s young are mad about communication devices, and the time, money and energy they set aside for this is much more than what they spare for their health or society. Obviously, there is imbalance in their participation in societal commitments. For example, we cannot see many youngsters these days participate in any voluntary or paid social service. Most of them stay away from the mainstream thinking that they can do everything with real-time possibilities. Naturally, they ignore their social roles. It is a matter of great concern and, I would say, it is a dangerous state of affairs.
However, does modern society look so bleak due to this ‘overtime on technology’? No. Great many youngsters are making hey when it shines. Real-time technology is a money spinner. In sectors like education, entertainment, employment, business and governance real time technology helps the younger generation by way of direct and indirect employment, investment and, thereby their many faceted empowerments. So, what is in store for the young and their immediate society? The former stands at greater advantage whereas the latter stands to lose considerably in terms of individual’s social intervention.
In short, this disparity in real-time and social time is a logical continuation of time itself. However, it is better for the young to remember that there are certain things that are far beyond the reach of real-time technology. So they need to strike a balance between the time they spare for real-time and social time.

In some medical regimes, there is a provision that those patients who are terminally ill and in vegetative condition for long need to be given the benefit of assisted death by withdrawing life supports that keep them alive.
• How good is such a provision from a patient’s point of view?
• Do you think it is worth applying universally?
Assisted death has been a bone of contention for ages. Still, in some medical regimes it is permitted. Anyway, a patient who is in a vegetative condition may find this a great blessing, but I do not think this can be applied universally.
If we look at this medical procedure through the eyes of a terminally ill person, there are points to prove that it is right. First of all, all human beings deserve a decent life without inflicting any burden to the people around. Here an assisted death would be a blessing both for the patient and for the near and dear ones. Secondly, since the condition is not going to improve by any medical means, there is not use letting the patient cling on to his or her life hopelessly. It is too miserable for all those who come to touch with the patient. Being alive is good, but it is better dead than alive when it comes to terminally ill.
Is this medical provision going to be applied universally? What I feel is this that it is not going to have many takers primarily because human life is associated with many values and faiths which are prevalent in different cultures. For some people, human life is God given and so no manmade system is right enough to take one’s life. For some others, medical science is to keep people alive, not to kill people. Above all, there is a great danger of misuse of this provision. Who would guarantee that assisted death is carried out on the right patient? Man may use it to annihilate people. So there is hardly any scope for this provision being applied globally.
In short, assisted death or euthanasia will be here for long, but the number of takers may not go higher. However, looking at it from a patient’s point of view, it is the best thing medical science can do for a hapless patient.

Your favourite swimming pool
Where it is
How often you go there
Why you like it
Swimming pool? Well, these days it is hard to find swimming pools in our place. It is now mostly found in hotels and tourist or holiday destinations.
However, I happened to enjoy the convenience of a swimming pool some time back. It is part of famous water theme park in our state.
And I visited this place as part of a tour programme.
It happened last year, and we, a group of friends visited this theme park called Vega land. It s some 75 kms off our place, and we were traveling by a mini bus.
Since, it is a water theme park there are many water related activities and adventures. One of such experiences is the swimming experience we had at that location.
Actually, it is big pool with the sparkling water and clean and secure surroundings.
What I like most is its conveniences like security arrangements,
like floats and airbags meant for children, and those who are not good at swimming.
There are seating arrangements, and they provide some umbrellas and sun beds for those who need them for relaxation after a swim.
Apart from all there, there is separate section with support facilities for males and females, like change room, rest room and make up rooms.
And finally, I need to add that water in this swimming pool is periodically purified. It is done at regular intervals and it is an automatic process. So we can be sure of cleanliness and be on guard against water-borne diseases.
That is all about the swimming pool I like most.

Competition as such is very much common in all walks of human life, and it is as old as human social life. But, of late, this human tendency is taking alarming proportions.
• How is competition as a human nature getting reflected in your place?
Competing is quite common, and competition is the order of today, and it is going to be so in all the ages to come. However, this positive attitude to betterment is taking alarming shapes and dimensions. My place is not an exception to this.
Competition! Where is it not there? This tendency actually is able to make people, organizations and nations better themselves. For example; professionals compete one another to do better every passing day. Naturally, they remain alert and informed of changes and requirements. Obviously they perform well. This is so with education, business, interests, social and personal lives, to mention a few. In short, what ever man enjoys today is/are the result of his being competing.
Unfortunately, today the attitude to ‘being competing’ has become one of ‘being defeating’. Basically, competing is not defeating. It is rather bettering. In my place, people seem to be taking it the other way round and they go to any extent to defeat their competitors. This is a dangerous tendency which is common in almost all walks of our social life.
For example; rising selfishness is a reflection of competition; increasing instances of corruption are the result of competition; destroying the competitor by defaming him or her and engaging in evil practices to enjoy upper hands, and the like are the eerie faces of competition. Sorry to say, my place is suffering from this sad state of affairs.
In short, this alarming situation is absolutely manmade, and competition as such has nothing to do with it. So, it is right to say that what ever difficulties man faces due to changes in competition can be wisely managed if he wishes so.

The chart shows the number of hours of leisure enjoyed by men and women in a typical week in 1998-9, according to gender and employment status.
Among those employed full-time, men on average had fifty hours of leisure, whereas women had approximately thirty-seven hours. There were no figures given for male part-time workers, but female part-timers had forty hours of leisure time, only slightly more than women in full-time employment, perhaps reflecting their work in the home.
In the unemployed and retired categories, leisure time showed an increase for both sexes, as might have been expected. Here too, men enjoyed more leisure time over eighty hours, compared with seventy hours for women, perhaps once again reflecting the fact that women spend more time working in the home than men.
Lastly, housewives enjoyed approximately fifty-four hours of leisure, on average. There were no figures given for househusbands! Overall, the chart demonstrates that in the categories for which statistics on male leisure time were available, men enjoyed at least ten hours of extra leisure time.

Since it is demand that promotes production of all goods, both good and bad, the responsibility of eliminating unfriendly products - for humans and environment - lies in the hands of every individual consumer.
• As an educated individual how best can you endorse this view?
• What other ways can you suggest to cut down on the production of harmful goods?
Lives on the Planet are threatened by many harmful products, and it is very much true that demand is what promotes such products. So as an educated individual I cannot but support this view being discussed, and I have my own suggestions in the respect.
In this connection, I find it right to stick on only one point. That is, no industry can survive for long unless what it produces is sold out in time. The things that go into the making of an industry are so diverse that no industry can survive without sales, profit and progress. All these business factors are governed by demands for what ever is produced.
Here comes the role of consumers. For example; if consumers unanimously decide on one thing that they won’t buy harmful products like tobacco, toxic beverages, suffocating plastics and similar health and ecological hazards, there is going to be slow death of all companies that produce such products. So it is demand that decides. The ball is in the court of consumers.
Apart from this, there are other alternatives, too. I think it is a good idea to impose ceilings on the quantity of products manufactured, so that free availability can be curtailed. Besides this, governments can decline all fresh applications for permission to open fresh industries. Incorporating a lesson in the school curriculum comprehenisively highlighting the dangers of harmful products will make the upcoming generation stay off hazardous products.
In short, when it comes to eliminating harmful products, the major role needs to be played by consumers. Along with this, the suggestions afore made can also do some favours to our Planet and all the lives on it.

Since every mistake is taken as an opportunity to do better, some people believe that children should be given enough freedom to commit mistakes, whereas some others say they should be instructed to avoid mistakes as it enables them to be careful and conscious.
Essay 071
• What is your opinion on these two view points?
There are differing views on whether children be given enough freedom to commit mistakes or they should be encouraged to avoid mistakes. But it is a fact that committing mistakes is an opportunity that makes children do well. I think pressing children to avoid mistakes may hamper learning.
Not many would deny the fact that learning is a complex process involving a lot of exercises. One such exercise is doing and learning. For example, when children are given freedom to commit mistakes, while engaged in some learning activity, they are likely to feel at home and do err. When the teacher or the mentor highlights the mistake and rectifies them, the ward happens to get the gravity of the mistake s/he has done. It helps her/him correct it once and for all.
On the contrary, if we insist our children to avoid mistakes, what happens is that it hampers the learning process, because, children are free learners and it is their sense of freedom that makes them at ease. Still, wanting them not to commit mistakes is good to some extent because it makes children conscious of what they are doing. This conscious approach to learning process cuts down on the number of mistakes. However, forcing them to do things right all the time is not encouraging.
Looking at both the arguments, I am of the opinion that it is a good idea to let children commit mistakes. Trial and error method in learning is an excellent concept being promoted world over. Of course, if children could avoid mistakes all by themselves, it is not bad either.

1. Some people say that community media platforms like talk-shows, facebook, blog and the like have made life much more social and interactive. But there are others who feel that this development has marred social life.
• How genuine are these two claims in your personal point of view?
The advent of net-based community portals has had great influence on human social life. When it comes to the claim that human life has become more interactive, I tend to believe that it is genuine. However, we cannot ignore the seamy sides of media.
Human social life is established by way of many factors. To mention a few, its interaction, meeting, sharing, exchanging pleasures and pains, getting informed and informing, expressing oneself and appreciating the merits and achievement of others and so goes the list. When we position these instruments of social life with what is happening with community portals, what I think, is that there is much more interaction and activity than it was in the past.
For example; seeing our classmates or schoolmates after long years, meeting our friends who remain spread at different places across borders, finding new friends and interacting with them etc. are much easier today than it was before. And we cannot expect today’s busy people to be meeting each other face to face. Our life does not offer such luxuries. In this context, community media platforms do the job exceptionally well, though mechanically.
All these possibilities notwithstanding, there is a seamy side to it. These personal electronic spaces have become platforms for cyber crimes; many children and youngsters get trapped into net-based asocial contacts and antisocial forces exploit these media for their dirty designs.
In short, if we compare the extent of possibilities these community portals offer with the limited problems they create, many would accept the fact that the first claim - that it has made life more social and interactive - holds much water than the second view.

A machine that was developed lately
What it is
When it was developed
How it works and helps man
Well, our times have a seen a lot developments
And I would like to talk about a new medical machine
Developed recently, and it is going to be a great help to man.
The machine is called ultra sound signal chain
Which, the developers say, would help doctors and patients alike.
It’s the latest development in medical care, and
The developers Frost and Sullivan says that this machine
Can be commercially developed within a few months
When produced commercially, this machine will be small
Enough to be made portable, and it is designed to
Fit in ICUs, ambulances and similar mobile triage situations.
When it comes to its medial application
It works much more efficiently than any other ultra sound based
Diagnosing device. It is very simple, and almost sound proof and
It works on a new microchip which functions like a chain does,
Identifying ultrasounds one after the other and ending up with the
Last possible detection; that is even the indecipherable sound beats
This is best suited for people
who are suffering from age related ailments.
I think this chip-supported machine will revolutionize
The way geriatric care works these days
As our century is bound to look after greater number of
Aged people than it was before, this is medical machine
Will give the aged population a little relief.
Yes, this is a great development, that is all about it sir.

Expenditure on fast foods by income groups
The bar graph on expenditure on fast foods by income groups in the UK in 1990 shows that high income group spent the most on Hamburger, above 40 pence per person per week. This is followed by average income group which set aside more than 30 pence a week. When it comes to low income group, the spending fell to below 15 pence per week.
If we look at the figures of Fish and Chips and pizzas, the high income group spared hardly fifty percent of what was used for hamburger. But the difference with regard to average income group did not differ much. It came down to 25 pence. The low income group went with 15 pence.
Finally, let us see how pizza as a fast food faired among these groups. While high income group set aside about 20 pence, the average group’s share was above 10 pence and the low income group’s was the least, above five pence.
While hamburger remained popular among high and average income groups, fish and chips were the favourite of low income group.
Touching all points.

With the emerging trends in the employment environment, the younger generation is found to be going after tailor-made short-term academic and technical qualifications and fetching jobs. They, in turn, turn away from conventional academic qualifications.
• How is this situation going to affect the society in general?
• Do you think it is important to pursue conventional qualifications?
Today time is money. So are the qualifications the younger generation happens to get. They think that education is an investment, and so wiser ones invest in easier and short term qualifications. Obviously, they ignore those time consuming conventional degrees.
Looking at it, what I feel is that we cannot blame the younger generation for their heightened interest in short-term qualifications because they are governed more by monitory instincts than by age old qualifications. This attitude is reinforced by the emerging possibilities for making money in several digits. All is well of course if people are able to live successfully throughout their life. However, the fact remains. In a social point of view; over emphasis on tailor-made qualification is a matter of some concern. The point is; the successful running of a society needs people of all types. Only tailor-made people cannot take a nation forward. It is a dangerous proposition indeed.
Therefore, it is mandatory that sizeable number of people pursue conventional academic programmes every year. when tailor-made programmes undermine higher studies, naturally, the need for highly qualified people to hold strategic positions of administration, teaching, research, development, governance and diplomacy, to mention a few, will be much higher. This cannot be made good by money. When there is need for such people, there should be enough people. Otherwise, the nation will go poor in all terms. Needless to say, we should encourage conventional qualifications.
In short, the workforce of a community needs to be as diverse as possible. This is achieved only if there is enough room for conventional academic qualifications. Tailor made programmes are fine for a few, but not for all.

Modern man doesn’t have any other alternative ways than learning to live with the devastating effects of consumerism.
Essay 043
• Do you think consumerism is as devastating as it is said to be?
• Are there way outs to make it less dangerous than what it actually is?
Consumerism is taken by different people differently. I for one, out of my experience, of the opinion that it is not only devastating, but dangerous as well. However, there are alternative ways to make it friendly.
Let me prove it. Firstly, most of the problems the world faces today are of consumerism. For example, climate change, resource crunch, wastes, ecological imbalance, and rich poor divide, temperature rise, to mention a few, are its by-products. Secondly, poor become poorer by consuming things both wanted and unwanted. Demands go up putting extreme pressure on the power grid. Mercury finds new levels melting the glaziers, seasons fail and poor rains happen. Finally, consumer giants devour small businesses and assume phenomenal sizes. Isn’t consumerism dangerous?
However, there are possibilities to tame it. But the onus lies in us all. Firstly, consumers must identify their needs. Secondly, there should be a clear picture on what we need to be able to lead a happy life. Thirdly, we all should learn to follow a responsible way of life. We have to identify everything in nature as ours and contributing whatever is possible back to nature; protecting itself and ourselves at the same time. In the long run, surely, consumerism will become a people friendly way of life.
To conclude it, it is man who has made consumerism a way of life, and it is man who suffers from it. Therefore, the ball is in the consumers’ court. They can make it less devastating than it actually is, and it is clear that there are ways in front of them.

Ecological benefit is taken by ecologists as a viable option to maintain green cover. But there is an argument that this will halt growth as the benefits offered may not be at par with the production, if the land is used differently.
Essay 073
• Discuss both the views and say what you feel about the concept.
• Ecological benefit: an allowance paid to those landowners who have some measures of green cover and are ready to keep it in tact for the well-being of the planet.
Speedy carbon recycling is the need of the hour, and ecologists find ecological benefit as a feasible option. But the concern that it would slow down growth is not unfounded. I feel that ecological benefit is to be promoted by all means.
It is the talk of the world that our Planet needs to be protected from the perils of carbon. Since green cover is the only solution, ecologists are of the view that the existing green cover is not enough to meet the challenges. Naturally, there is need for individual participation. This, in turn, needs government support. If governments can meet the expectations of people, who have their own green cover, people would keep it for the well being of the world. So offering decent ecological benefits to individuals would go a long way in making the world a healthier place to be in.
However, mere green cover maintenance wouldn’t meet the needs of the world population. The concern that it would slowdown growth needs to be address by alternatives. Today, humans are much better placed with efficient technologies to be applied in agriculture to augment production, and there are research and development options to meet the rising needs of man and, finally, humans themselves can control population. This will keep his needs controlled, and the Planet may be at ease to keep the population supplied with enough resources.
Looking at both the views, it is right to conclude that future of the Planet lies in the hands of every individual, and uniform participation of individuals alone would make a difference in carbon management. No wonder, ecological benefit sounds great.

All the educated and successful of a community must return whatever is possible for them to their immediate society.
• How do you look at this statement?
Social welfare is a collective exercise in which society has the duty to give its citizens whatever is needed for them to be successful. The same way, citizens have to be returning whatever is possible for them to the community. This responsibility is higher with the educated and successful.
As a matter of fact, society is a collective term, and keeping its well being is a complex process. From individuals’ perspective, their society is expected to provide them with everything so that they can be productive and thereby successful. For example, schools, food, energy and water security, law and order, justice system, medical care, transportation, sanitation and the list goes on.
Here crops a question? Do all members depend on their society for everything throughout their life? No. Society as such is a complex mix of people: there are haves and have-nots, educated and not so educated, employed and unemployed, healthy and weak, young and old, and there are several other disparities. Can a society bridge all these gaps?
Here comes the role of the educated and successful. There are innumerable options for them to help their society that has made them what they actually are. For example, doctors can offer free consultation; teachers can guide poor students; advocates can offer a little free legal aid, the educated can help educate the rest and the successful can generate employment, and the employed can promote development.
In short, it is right to say there is no society without people’s participation and there are no successful people without societal intervention. This is a two way process, and the absence of one will cancel the other out. It is a kind of help and be helped.

In some countries, the unemployed youth, who have got the right attitude, are encouraged to do voluntarily services for their community so that they would get better groomed themselves once they get into some paid job.
• How good is this concept in the point of view of an unemployed?
• How is this idea going to influence a society in general?
Being prepared to work for one’s community is a great quality. When the work is done voluntarily at free times? It is greater. This idea would serve all the aspiring unemployed, and their selfless contributions would benefit their society, too.
How is this idea going to work for one who has no income? The answer to this question lies in one’s attitude, or what we call, “if there is a will…..” The fact is that an unemployed, who does voluntary work, is actually serving himself first and his society next in several different ways. S/he can feel the pulse of the community, understand the dignity of labour, enjoy the taste of sweat, pick up soft skills like communication, socializing, time management, prioritizing, and so goes the list. Are these things not going to help an unemployed person to get him or herself cut for a new job?
Let me look at it from a social angle. A welfare society needs to look into the welfare of all and employment is one of the major factors that make a society successful. So, if all the educated and aspiring job seekers are willing to put in some free service to their community during their employment-free times, their society would witness great changes in terms of say, better sanitation, waste and water management, energy conservation, education on environment, health and hygiene, and the list may go endless.
In short, the attitude of the unemployed to work for the community voluntarily is a win-win proposition. It benefits the youth greatly in terms of their grooming, and their immediate society, in turn, will experience better welfare. Voluntary service, I tend to say, is the best paid job.

When it comes to recruiting new staff, some premier employers give more importance to job aspirants who have got some experience in voluntary service to their community than those who have got experience in their respective fields.
• Why is this shift of interest towards voluntary work?
• Do you think it is good to do some voluntary work to community?
Today, employers look for many things other than qualifications and experience when they recruit. Some even go to the extent of preferring voluntary work experience to industry-ready experience. They are reasons, and I think it is good to be going voluntary for a while.
Let me see why some leading organizations give preference to voluntary work. The thing, I think, is that being prepared to work is an excellent attitude and this attitude today is mostly governed by monetary benefits than by their being service-minded. Needless to say, a select few employers look for the latter. Because if the former is there in the attitude, the latter will follow. This attitude is again heightened by the fact that, today, there are great many that have relevant experience, but people with selfless attitude to work are rare. Obviously, some employers look for such rare people.
Let me se how good it is to be doing some voluntary work. If all the educated and aspiring job seekers are willing to put in some free service to their community during free times, their society would witness great changes in terms of say, better sanitation, waste and water management, energy conservation, education on environment, health and hygiene, and the list may go endless. For example, a State cannot meet all the needs of its citizens, and individuals themselves have a moral obligation to serve their community voluntarily. It is social gesture, because society is people.
In brief, there is no wonder why some employers prefer voluntary-minded recruits to others. I think it is a sign of their commitment to social welfare. Such a professional look into voluntary work is likely to make any society better in terms of its welfare.
