Modern man doesn’t have any other alternative ways than learning to live with the devastating effects of consumerism.
Essay 043
• Do you think consumerism is as devastating as it is said to be?
• Are there way outs to make it less dangerous than what it actually is?
Consumerism is taken by different people differently. I for one, out of my experience, of the opinion that it is not only devastating, but dangerous as well. However, there are alternative ways to make it friendly.
Let me prove it. Firstly, most of the problems the world faces today are of consumerism. For example, climate change, resource crunch, wastes, ecological imbalance, and rich poor divide, temperature rise, to mention a few, are its by-products. Secondly, poor become poorer by consuming things both wanted and unwanted. Demands go up putting extreme pressure on the power grid. Mercury finds new levels melting the glaziers, seasons fail and poor rains happen. Finally, consumer giants devour small businesses and assume phenomenal sizes. Isn’t consumerism dangerous?
However, there are possibilities to tame it. But the onus lies in us all. Firstly, consumers must identify their needs. Secondly, there should be a clear picture on what we need to be able to lead a happy life. Thirdly, we all should learn to follow a responsible way of life. We have to identify everything in nature as ours and contributing whatever is possible back to nature; protecting itself and ourselves at the same time. In the long run, surely, consumerism will become a people friendly way of life.
To conclude it, it is man who has made consumerism a way of life, and it is man who suffers from it. Therefore, the ball is in the consumers’ court. They can make it less devastating than it actually is, and it is clear that there are ways in front of them.
