Some humanists are of the opinion that government servants may be asked to offer some voluntarily service/s periodically to their immediate communities as the former are much better off than the rest in terms of earning and wellbeing.

• Do you think such a social order has some relevance in your immediate society?

Being a government employee is meant for a few, and those who are, enjoy great financial and social security. So, the opinion on inviting their voluntary social service is of great significance. Obviously it has some relevance in our society, too.

Let me see how relevant such a social order in my immediate society is. Mine is a society where population is so huge that government is unable to meet the needs of every one. Employment security, medical care are, uniform education, equal social justice, food and other essential supplies, to mention a few are pressing issues. In such a scenario, those who are in government sector can do great service to the community. After all, they are lucky enough to be what they are, and the majority needs support. So, it is humane to be able to help the society that keeps the government employees fed all through their life.

It may work in man ways. For example, government servants can set aside a few days’ service every month or a few hours; work every day or on holidays for the community. There are innumerable options for them too. Doctors can offer free consultation; teachers can guide those poor students of their place and those who work in judiciary can offer free legal aid for the poor. Needless to say, a society that enjoys such voluntary services from government employees will experience great changes in terms of general social welfare.

In short, people who are well off thanks to their being paid employees have an obligation to their immediate society. This obligation is significant in several different ways, especially at a time when there exist great inequalities between people.
