GM Foods, arguements for and against: IELTS essay question

There is wide range of arguments for and against genetically modified foods on issues such as their nutritional value, the beneficiaries and producers and environmental effects.

What are your major arguments for and against GM foods?

Genetic modification
· Taking genes from cells of a plant, animals or microbes and planting them into another cells to achieve a particular charactaristic.
· It is a development in biotechnology growing into great significance.
· Improvements in production.
· Away from tradition production methods.
· Cotton oil. Soybeans, Canola oil, corn, potatoes, sugar beet etc.

For the food:

· Improved quality. Healthier, cheaper, safer and better foods
· Heightened production; can feed all the poor of the world.
· Better pest resistant crops. Ensure more production
· Environment friendly: less pesticide application.

Against the food:
· Multinationals will benefit more from this. They hold the key for GM research. Profit goes to them and they keep the monopoly.
· Traditional farming will go extinct and people will lose their jobs
· Consumers, the beneficiaries, may not have many choices to know of GM Foods
· It is difficult to ascertain the quality of the food as it needs a lot of technology

Conclusion:
· GM foods, it’s obvious, can meet the growing food demand.
· If we are intelligent enough, we can exploit this revolution
· There is nothing wrong in embracing something that is able meet a big challenge called food security.
· We have to be wise enough to use technology for the well being of the humans.
