Sir,
This has reference to the news I read the other day that a new project is going to come up at our place called Kumarakom. Upon further enquiry, I have come to know that this new project is aimed at processing the waste generated by Kottayam town.

This in my view is going to be a serious environmental issue as Kumarakam is a tourist destination which promotes various aqua tourism activities, and the annual revenue generated by this place crosses millions. Therefore, it is extremely important to look into the environmental and social aspects of this particular project covering some ten acres of land.

Further, there is going to be great threat of epidemics too as waste dumped in here may get mixed with the lake waters. So, I would like the authorities to look into this issue and halt the project for the time being.

And your Daily’s concern towards issues of common interest is known for all, and I am hopeful that this letter would reach the right people.

Violation of court ruling on loudspeakers after 9pm

Sir

I am writing this to invite the attention of authorities towards a serious violation of a court ruling on loud speakers.

We all know that there is a ruling on loudspeakers that it is not permitted to use high decibel sound systems near by residential areas after 9 pm. The fact being so, of late, some political parties at our neighbourhood seem to be ignoring this. As a result, they find it all right to use high decibel loud speakers even during midnight. This leads to many inconveniences to people, especially students and the aged; needless to speak of a home for the aged nearby, which accommodates nearly 100 people in the 70-80 age bracket.

Though we have made many representations to the concerned authorities, nothing has happened so far. Since there is no other way out we are forced to approach the Press to take up this issue and see that this gross violation of court ruling is stopped for ever.

Great many youngsters are of the opinion that their attitude towards food and dress culture is a matter of choice, and it is not a matter of concern that such cultures change as time passes by.

• Do you agree or disagree with the view? Support your view/s with examples from your life or surroundings.

Change, no matter what it is, is the order of human life. However, certain things do need to be kept free from changes. Food culture and dress culture are two such things. Undermining these is a matter of some concern.

It is a matter of concern that modern generation finds it alright to undermine food habits and dress cultures. The primary concern is that the food culture is something unique to all cultures. For example, in our culture, a set of white dhothi and shirt is the typical outfit goes with men at auspicious occasions. The same way women have their own; like saree and all that come with it. So is the case with food culture. Three times traditionally prepared food is the order of our culture. And occasional changes in this have always been welcome, though.

On the contrary what happens if all cultures happen to endorse the view that it is a matter of choice! This will create wrong precedents, and the coming generation may happen to be dependent on alien foods which may not be in line with their metabolic requirements. For example, the health indices of a community hinge at its traditional food habits. Wrong food leads to health risks. The story will be a little murkier with regard to dress. Dress culture identifies itself with people and it happens the other way round too. A generation simply cannot turn its coat saying it is a matter choice. It is a concern indeed.

In short, looking at the changing attitude towards food and dress cultures, I am inclined to say, the food culture of a populace determines their health status itself. When it comes to dress, it is right to add that it often proclaims one’s culture too.

Spending a lot many years for higher education is becoming increasingly unpopular among youngsters across the world; rather many are out for quicker qualifications that bring in faster returns.

• How good is this change of attitude to higher education?
• Do you think it would adversely influence the society in someway?

Measuring higher qualifications in terms of the time involved for getting qualified is very common today. Looking at it from a learner’s angle, it is a right move, but from a social point of view, this is not that worth promoting.

When I take a cursory look at the idea, the first thing that comes to my mind is that it saves huge amount of time and energy of learners. This, in turn, makes all such learners fast earners. In today’s fast paced changes and emerging opportunities being able to earn faster is more important than spending ages for qualifications. For example, today higher education as such is possible on the job, and there are countless possibilities to make use of time round the clock. Naturally, getting a faster qualification leading to a career is much better in more ways than one.

However, things are not that fine with this change of attitude if we look at it from a social or national point of view. The point is a nation needs great number of highly qualified people to man strategic positions like, say, administrators, professors, resource persons, planners and the like. How is a nation going to meet this need if every one ignores what I call “positions of paramount priority”? Do not all the educated have a national role too to play? Yes, they do. So nation would get affected greatly, if this quicker and faster buck attitude is promoted.

To put it briefly, it is right to say higher education involving longer years is of greater significance. Quicker qualifications, on the other hand, may serve the immediate purposes of the educated. I would say, such a utilitarian approach is not that fine.

The negative effects of job hopping
Bangalore: Some employees are well aware of the fact that their economic survival depends on the maintenance of cutting edge skills. And this is the reason why they do not feel guilty when they switch to some other jobs for a better salary or better opportunities for growth. However changing jobs all the time and looking for the best deals and offers can be a risky business and can have an adverse effect on your resume and sense of professionalism. Suggested below are the negative effects of job hopping

Questions may be raised about one’s skills

Many of short shifts in jobs on your resume will undoubtedly raise questions about your skills and work ethic, therefore be prepared with explanations. Most of the employers today hesitate to hire people who have held several positions for less than a year, because it demonstrates that their skills were not a match for several companies. Especially, during non-recessionary times job hopping can prove be a risky task.

Employers may question stability
This can be especially difficult in some large companies that place a higher value on job stability. If your resume exhibits that you have not halted long in any company, future employers might think of you as a high risk recruit. You can never avoid the question as to what your reasons are for leaving all the past companies behind. This can be a major deciding factor for future employers because they would think that they are just endangering their company by someone like you who has the reputation of being dissatisfied with your work and always moving to better job.
Falling interest in job hoppers
Employers are never interested in investing money and training time on a job hopper. They would rather invest in people who are stable because they will be able to contribute back into the company. With constant job hopping you will convey a message that you are not ready to make commitments. Organizations show their interest in people who have their career goals adjusted with their corporate goals. Job hoppers cannot see their career path in a company beyond a year.

Inefficient
Although you may know within yourself that you are quite effective in your work, you posses great caliber, a resume that possess a bright background will eventually speak for itself. But frequent job hopping will give employers the perception that you will not be with the company long enough when it comes to effectiveness in your job and handing adequate work tasks.

You may be branded short-sighted.
Frequent job hopping can affect you as well. Hence you should start thinking about what you really want in life before you move on to another career opportunity. Skipping jobs may eventually ruin many things for you such as friendship with your co-workers, relationship with your family and other important aspects in your life. Frequent job hopping is like starting all over again every single time. Though not many keep any long standing loyalty with any organization, a minimum farsightedness is expected of people. 500 words

In the past education was primarily to make people refined and knowledgeable, but today it (education) is expected to invite great returns in the shortest possible time.

• What in your opinion is the real role of education in today’s changing world order?
• Do you think people’s changing attitude towards education is worthwhile?

Today people look at education differently from what their counterparts did a few decades before in terms of its role. Apparently, there is great shift in their attitude towards it which, in my opinion, is rather not that encouraging, though.

Let me admit the fact that the role education is expected to play in these days of today is entirely different from what it was. Firstly, today’s education, I tend to say, needs to be empowering people according to the changes a society takes up. For example, today, the need for a decent living out of the advancements is much more important than being educated on some fields. Secondly, education must make every one become independent learners. For example, today people enjoy great possibilities for adding values to their life all by themselves. Here making them independent is more important than keeping them just informed or knowledgeable.

When it comes to the shift in people’s attitude to education, there are a few discordant notes. Primarily, education has become an investment option for many parents. For example, people go for great consultations before they decide on a course of education. This is not just in terms of employment but also in terms of say, how much is the financial outlay involved, how fast one is going to get employed, how hefty is the pay pack he or she is going to earn and so goes the list. Looking at it from a social angle, this is rather unbecoming. Every educated has a role off his or her immediate interests.

In short, change is quire human and it is need too. This is applicable to education and its role as well. But people’s changing attitude to education today does not augur well; rather it does raise a few apprehensions. I feel so.

Prepare a table of data based on the information given under.

Here is a table that sets down particulars pertaining to what is required in at erms of qualification and experience to get an entry level placement in three major IT giants, and the pay package, in Indian Rupees, (INR) they offer.

Among the three companies, Wipro demands the least in terms of qualification and experience. Here the job is open for any degree holder, and no experience is needed, rather the company is ready to pay on the job training. And the pay? They offer the least as well, 2/3 hundred thousand per year.

In contrast, IBM offers two times the salary offered by Wipro. But the qualification and experience expected are much higher too. Here the post is open only for IT engineering degree holders. Coupled with this is the three years’ experience.

Among the three Microsoft seems to be taking a middle course though. Any science graduate is eligible to apply for provided he or she has an additional computer diploma up his sleeve. Experience-wise, the demand is not that big either; two years. The pay package is not that bad either; 3-4 hundred thousand.

In short, it may be said that higher is the pay, greater is the requirement and qualifications.

Try to form a table of data based on the literature given below.
The table breaks up data on adspend made by different household appliances manufacturers for four consecutive business years. The figures are in millions of Indian Rupees.

It is obvious that Samsung spent the most in all four business years. In 2003-04, it set aside 50 million rupees, and this figure kept on increasing over the years with 2004-05 recording a 50% increase, and the following years saw a slight increase of 10 million rupees from the previous years’. Recording more than two times increase, Samsung crossed the 100 million mark in 2007.

Coming to LG, their corresponding figures for the years were 45, 89, 91 and 92. It is evident that the first two years had remarkable rise in ad expenditure; nearly two times. In 2005 and 2006 there was very limited increase. When it comes to Whirlpool, it had the least outlay with 2003 earmarking only 25 million. The following years had the figures like 35, 45 and 48 respectively.

It is interesting to note that minor market players under the category called ‘others’ had spent sizeable amounts along with major brands. Their corresponding figures are: 36, 57, 61 and 72.
That ends the report.

Attrition Reduction through Competency Modeling
By Ashwin Krishna
Torry Harris

The need to further one’s career tends to inculcate a spirit of wanderlust amongst employees. ‘Where do you see yourself x years from now?’ is a real concern for many employees. Inadequate answers to this question can often cause an employee to seriously re-evaluate his role within the organization and many a times contribute to his quitting the organization. Industry surveys indicate that employees quit because of immediate managers, mismatch in career aspirations and job dissatisfaction.

At Torry Harris, we follow a well-researched Competency Model (CM) that helps us identify and evaluate gaps and necessary steps to bridge it. Each employee, while reporting to a project manager, also has a designated Competency Manager who continuously maps the employee’s performance/growth and facilitates a feedback mechanism that leads to better understanding of the employee’s career aspirations, while aligning them to the organizational goals.

The CM works on the principle that the employee growth evaluation is based on two aspects - competency level and service delivery potential. We place these two aspects on a grid as illustrated in the diagrammatic representation, with delivery on one axis - dealing in customer expectations in terms of quality and timelines, which is managed by the delivery manager and competency is mapped on another axis that deals with peoples’ expectation in career growth, work-life balance and technical growth managed by competency managers. As pressure builds up at the delivery level, it creates an impact on the individuals’ competency and ultimately delivery may suffer. Hence, by forming a team of competency managers, we want to create a comfort zone for employees. A few months ago, we came across one such case.

On regular monitoring of performance of an employee, the competency manager anticipated a possible dip in performance levels. On further probing and extensive interaction with the employee, a gap was noticed between the career aspiration of the employee and the current role he was performing. The employee possessed good front-end skills and would have been an asset at the client location. On discussing this renewed role with the employee, he was very enthusiastic about taking on this challenge. Hence the transition of this employee from his current role to his front-end role was facilitated and today, it is a win-win situation for all the stakeholders - the client is extremely happy, the employee has excelled in his new role and is very happy with his job and the organization is very satisfied with the way the entire situation has shaped up.

The idea is to satisfy all the stakeholders and create a comfortable environment for the customer and for the employee and in this context, our CM ensures that everybody wins.

Online Threats For Children
Downloaded
New Delhi: With their favourite movies and music available through a host of mobile devices and ability to connect to people just a mouse click away, children are increasingly exchanging information indiscriminately in the virtual world exposing themselves to cyber exploits, a recent survey reveals.
A sample survey "How safe are Indian kids online?", commissioned by global security tech firm McAfee and conducted across 10 cities in India revealed that 62 per cent of affluent children surveyed admitted to having shared personal information online.

"The threats are numerous, ranging from cyber bullying, stalking, abusing, sexual communications and advances to spams and scams," says Anindita Mishra, Cybermum at McAfee India.

Mishra, a Pune-based freelance writer, teacher and mother of two has been roped in by McAfee to use the company platform to blog about the dangers children face online and ideas to steer clear of them.

The survey conducted in - Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ludhiana, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune, covered 500 children and 496 parents.

Of the 500 affluent children having e-mail IDs, 67 per cent were 4-8 years old and 64 per cent having an account on social networking sites were 8-12 years old.

The finding showed that 58 per cent of the children, half of them between 4-8 years, admitted to sharing their home address and 40 per cent of them shared their photographs and 12 per cent even shared their parents' credit card details on the Internet.

"Kids are using various devices to access the internet. While an average of 91 per cent surveyed kids across cities use the PC, there is increasing adoption of devices like laptops (26 per cent) and mobile phones (31 per cent).

"Apart from homes, there are other access points such as cyber cafes, friends' homes and school labs kids use to access the internet," says Mishra.

While the survey shows 32 per cent children were not aware of any online threats, 12 per cent children admitted to have been victims of some of the other form of cyber attacks.

Mumbai had the highest cyber bullying levels reported among children at 33 per cent. "Parents can keep tab on the digital lifestyle of their children by using various software availible in the market," says Mishra.

Encrypted website blocking, instant monitoring and social networking filtering are some of the facilities offered by the software to help parents get a better insight to the digital lifestyles of their children.

Modern businesses are having tough time in handling different generations of individuals who make up their workforce.

• How does generation gap affect a workforce?
• What it takes to bridge the generation gap?

It is a downloaded article from ciliconindia.com. You may try to answer the above question by reading the following 600 hundred-words-long article.
How to bridge the generation gap in the workplace?
Most of the businesses today are facing a peculiar problem. This is not something which is derived from downsizing, change, foreign competition, cubical envy or greed. It is difficulty of generations in conflict. Modern businesses are having tough time in handling different generations of individuals who make up their workforce. Lack of attention to generational differences will make any company less efficient. Therefore, a good understanding of differences among generations to strengthen work relationships between employees is very crucial.

To some people, the requirement to manage generation in the workplace may look like an unnecessary task, but this generation problem commonly found in businesses is worthwhile to take note of. In an organization there may be different generations of workers like veterans, who are above the age of 60; "Baby Boomers", employees in the age group of 45 to 65; generation X, employees in the age group of 30 and 45; and generation Y, employees in their 20s or even younger. It's very obvious that these employees will have their own sets of mind, and because of that they will clash with each other due to the differences in values, ideas and work style.

So what it takes to bridge the generation gap? As research shows, in an organization, employees interact on the basis of their upbringing, values and ideas. Thus, different generations have their own way of thinking and working, according to their background. Therefore, to be effective in the process of bridging the gap, an organization must know its employees as individuals, their background, personality, preferences and style. Realizing this issue and knowing how to deal with the gap will bring employee efficiency to an organization.

An organization can follow certain steps to bridge the generation gap in the workplace. It can provide training to the employee on the communication and working style of the different generations. Practicing this can be very useful in avoiding misunderstandings as well as confrontations in the workplace. Conducting regular seminars and special events can serve this purpose well. If the employees begin to understand other employees belonging to other generations, it will be easy for them to work together in a better way.

While making policies, related to motivation or any other aspect of business, the needs of different generations should be kept in mind. For instance, those employees belonging to generation X can be motivated by a higher salary or bonus, while those employees belonging to veterans can be motivated by giving recognition and respect.

One of the most typical problems that face a modern business that is operating with a number of different generations in its workforce is related to technology. Generally, Younger generation communicate with e-mails, text messages or instant messaging. On the other hand, in most cases, the older generations want to speak face-to-face, or at least over the telephone. In this case, a balance has to be maintained.

Apart from this, there can be problems with communication between different generations of worker, physical limitations of the older personnel in an organisation and so on. Hence, the need to fulfil a range of diverse wants and aspirations to keep an entire workforce satisfied.

Today, organizations require a varied range of skills, and this requirement cannot be fulfilled by just one of the generations discussed above. The organizations have to understand that the route to success depends a lot on discovering a balance between different generations. The human resource managers in organizations have to make sure the utilization of advantages, mitigation of weaknesses and at the same time encouraging as well.

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
You ordered a new cheque book from your bank two weeks ago but you have received nothing.

Write a letter to the manager complaining about the bad service. Say when and how you ordered the cheque book. Ask how much longer you will have to wait and ask the manager what action he will take over this matter.
You should write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write your own address. Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir,
Model answer:Expenditure for health and education: versus GDP

The graphs show health and education spending and changes in life expectancy and infant mortality in the UAE. Overall, as the percentage spent on health and education increases, infant mortality and life expectancy improve.

Graph 1 shows the percentage of GDP spent on health and education between 1985 and 1993. There were big increases in both areas. Health spending stood at about 8% in 1985 but rose to 9% in 1990 and 10% in 1993. Spending on education was even higher. It was 10% in 1985, and shot up to 14% in 1990 and 15% in 1993, a 50% increase in just 8 years.

Graph 2 shows improvements in life expectancy and infant mortality between 1970 and 1992. Life expectancy was just 60 in 1970 but rose to almost 72 in 1992. In contrast, the number of babies dying dropped dramatically, from 60 per 1000 in 1970 to only 22 in 1992.

In conclusion, people in the UAE are living longer and healthier lives because of the government's spending on education and medical facilities.

Model answer:salary requirements atgaisnt property rental in london suburbs

The table shows two sets of related information: the relative cost, in pounds, of renting a property with one, two or three bedrooms in three different suburbs of London and an indication of the kind of annual salary you would need to be earning to rent in these areas.

Of the three areas mentioned, Notting Hill is the most expensive with weekly rents starting at £375 (salary approximately f 100,000) and rising to £738 per week for a 3-bedroom property. To afford this, you would require a salary in the region of £200,000 per annum. Alternatively, Fulham is the cheapest area shown with rents ranging from £215 per week for a one bedroom property to £600 per week for a 3-bedroom property. To rent in this area, salaries need to be somewhere between £85,000 and £170,000 depending on the number of bedrooms required. For those able to pay in the middle price range for accommodation, Regent's Park might be a more suitable district.

Some are of the opinion that art and literature are supposed to fight against the ills and evils of the society, whereas some others say, art and literature are personal expressions meant for entertaining the people.

• How do you look at these two view points?

It has always been a controversy whether art and literature have some social roles, or they are for their sake only. I feel that art and literature have a social role to play by criticizing the evils and bad practices of the society. This can be done in an entertaining way too.

When it comes to their responsibility of fighting against the evils of the society, it is right to look at the history of the world. We can cite innumerable examples to prove that art and literature have been instrumental to initiating changes and remedying social evils. For example, Indian freedom struggle was a success because the thinkers, artists and writers of those times had been able to project the evils of aggression, and people were able to respond to the calls of the freedom fighters.

However, there is no denying the fact that art and literature are personal expressions. It is true that people go creative and produce arts and literatures in order to express their feelings and thoughts. These feelings and thoughts have some social relevance and all their contributions naturally reflect the society they live in. The cartoons of R.K Lexman, the renowned Indian cartoonist, are typical examples. He has been able to express his feelings and fears he had of his society through his hilarious cartoon strips.

To conclude it, it is right to say that art and literature have always been powerful enough to make changes in the society. Obviously, they have helped eradicate several social evils. Of course, there are a few that are just for entertaining people.

Conservation of wild animals and maintaining of their habitat are claiming a sizeable amount of money every year. But it is argued that wild-life as such does not contribute much in accordance with the size of money it consumes every year.

How do you look at this argument?

I for one am of the opinion that the money nations around the world allocate for the upkeep of wildlife and their habitat is the wisest of allocations in several different counts. The argument that wildlife does not contribute proportionally is premature.

Let me prove the point by citing a small example from our surroundings. The much talked about topic across the world is excessive carbon emission and its myriad ramifications on the Planet. Unfortunately, the only solution is protecting the existing green cover. So, we need forests. Forests are the habitat of wild animals, and they both do a great job in maintaining the ecological balance of the whole Planet. Obviously, no amount will be a bigger amount if spent in this direction.

On the other hand, the argument that animals and their habitat need to produce visible material benefits in terms of the money spent is childish. We need to do ask a few simple enough questions ourselves. Firstly, what all things money is able to generate and what all things wild life and their life are able to generate? Can we re-generate forests as old as thousand years? Can we bring back an endangered species? Do we have enough money to buy out an Amazon jungle or a Silent Valley? I am sure the argument is proved unfounded.

In short, allocation of funds for the upkeep of the wild and their habitat is much worthwhile than anything else. Man has great limitations, but nature does not have any. So it would be wiser if we protect our wild life and their habitats.

Some people believe that all healthcare innovations a nation happens to achieve- both medicinal and diagnostic- need to be accessible and affordable for all the needy regardless of the latter’s (the needy) socio-economic statuses.

• How far do you agree or disagree with this view?

It is affordability and accessibility that make healthcare worthwhile. In this respect, I find it right to observe that all healthcare achievements must reach the needy. A condition contrary to this is unfair in more ways than one.

The one and only thing that makes me support the view is that a healthcare instrument that is not affordable or accessible to the needy is as useless as there is no such instrument at all. For example; let us take the case of a lifesaving medicine being wanted by a person of poor socio-economic status. If such a medicine is not there at time of crisis, he or she is going to die. This is not due to the fact that medicine is not able to save the life; rather it is because the medicine is inaccessible or unaffordable. It makes me ask, ‘which medicine is more costly than a human life?’

A situation contrary to this may be counterproductive. The argument is that when medicines and diagnostic facilities go handy only for the better off, life itself becomes a commodity equated in terms of money. This is not only dangerous; rather it is asocial and inhuman too. Because medical innovations in the long run will be exclusively for the rich, and the supply chain management of healthcare will turn out to be in terms of the buying power of the needy: poor is the buying power, so is the medical care one is likely to get. It is devastatingly dangerous.

So it is fair to argue that all medical breakthroughs must be accessible and affordable for all regardless of one’s being rich or poor. Else, human life will go for bargains by medical and diagnostic giants. That is what I feel.

For many poor nations, spending on their defense is always on the rise. This, in turn, forces them to compromise on many other pressing priorities like food, shelter, health, education, energy and the like.

• How worthwhile is it to spend more on security than on other things?
• What reasons do you attribute to escalating defense spending?

There is nothing new in the fact that defense consumes the most from the national exchequer of poor nations. Yes, it is of some use in terms of security, but should it be at the cost of basic human existence? I am afraid not.

Maintaining security as such is the supreme responsibility of a Nation State. There is no compromise on it. It is expected that not only money and material, but every citizen is bound to stand against aggression which is likely to topple the peace of the State. In such a context, it is mandatory to spend enough to ensure that the Nation is free from threats. For example, a nation cannot exist with perennial threats from outside. Here defense is primary, and food, shelter, health, education, energy and the like are secondary.

However, exorbitant spending on defense is caused by some factors; both imaginary and real. Coming to the former, it is to meet certain security breaches that might happen rather than those ones that are going to happen. For example, let us take the case of two poor economies like India and Pakistan. They think that there may be attacks from across their borders any moment.

When it comes to the real reasons, firstly, it is the rising competition between rich and poor nations in military terms. Secondly, for many rich nations, war is their business, and they perpetrate rivalries across the world. This makes poor nations accumulate military arsenal. No wonder, they are compelled to spend more on defense capabilities than on other priorities like food, shelter, health, education or whatever.

In short, it is right to say a nation cannot exist without security, and there needs enough spending for it. Should it be at the cost of other priorities like food and shelter? It is a moot question all nations need to ask themselves. A proportional approach sounds good to me.

Most of the metropolitan cities these days happen to enjoy longer night life than it was some 10/15 years before and some say cities are not going to sleep anymore in the days to come.

• What reasons do you attribute to this increasing night life?
• Do you think days and nights are going to be same for the cities of tomorrow?

Today, man is living in a 24x7 world where the distinction between day and night seems to be thinning. This is getting reflected more in the metros than elsewhere. And the line that divides these two may go invisibly thinner tomorrow.

Let me see why metros stay up longer these days. Today, it is time that matters most for many, though not for all. In such a context, cities are places where the monitory dimension of time is getting exploited much better and faster than elsewhere. For example, cities are centres of opportunities and, obviously, people have to stay awake to cash in on these opportunities. Time sensitive call center jobs, professions of three-shift-days, businesses that target night timers, improved travel facilities and those ‘nightertainments’ do keep cites stay up for longer hours today.

If things go on like this, a prediction is possible to the tune of, say metros of tomorrow are hardly going to sleep. It does not mean that the whole urban landscape is going to be awake all night long; rather greater number of people and businesses are likely to be staying up longer than it is today. For example, night shopping, late-night socializing, early morning entrepreneurships and the like may become more common in the metros of future, making the-day-night-divider still thinner.

In short, what is going to happen in the days to come is that there will be more practical ways of exploiting time so as to make human life easier and more worth living. In such a state of mind, I think, there is hardly going to be any distinction between metro days and nights.

Letter to the Editor
Sir,
This has reference to the news that a new project is going to come up at our place called Kumarakom. I understand that this new project is aimed at processing the waste generated by Kottayam town.

This in my view is going to be a serious environmental and economic issue as Kumarakam is a tourist destination which promotes various aqua tourism activities, and the annual revenue generated by this place crosses millions. The marine and avian life in the sanctuary is bound to face problems too.

I am a resident of Princevile area, and I have been staying here for the last 25 years. I am writing this to bring to your notice a pestering problem being faced by the residents of this area.

Recently, we find that the adolescent population of this place is showing signs of drug addiction. This is due to the constant presence of some suspicious people who, we doubt, are drug peddlers. There are some other elements who push in liquor products too among youngsters.

This problem itself is alarming. But, to cap it all, now there are instances in which these youngsters happen to engage in asocial activities. These developments leave our residential area a little bit disturbed.

Therefore, as a resident, I am forced to approach you seeking help. Please look into this issue and, in the meanwhile, kindly arrange to post a few patrol personnel in this area in the evenings.

Sir

I am writing this letter to you to inform you of something disturbing with regard to my child Rosh Ely, a fifth grade student at your school, and requesting you look into an issue which I believe you are not aware of.

Of late my son comes with homework far beyond his endurance, and I understand that this academic pressure puts my child in difficulties like sleeplessness, irregular food habits and restlessness and worries. He looks a little short tempered too. Needless to say, it disturbs me too.

When my son was in lower grades, especially last year, he did not get any trouble with homework: rather I found him doing his work with great pleasure.

Now when I sit with my child, he tells me that he has a few new teachers now who are fresher recruits and they keep on giving homework, and their classes are not encouraging either. This I think it is serious issue which needs your special attention.

Requesting you to look into the issue,

Sincerely

Ely Dan Braun

Exorbitant cut off mark for admission to certain courses being imposed by some premier higher education institutions a violation of equal rights for higher education.

• Do you agree or disagree with this view?

Cut off marks go higher every passing year, putting the aspirations of many students in jeopardy. This unhealthy academic practice, in my opinion, is nothing short of violation of rights for deserving higher education. I can prove it so.

The point here is that no examination expects a candidate to score 100% marks so that he or she be declared qualified for higher education. On the other hand, there is a basic minimum pass mark that can be set as a benchmark. And all the students who score the minimum and above have the right to get deserve higher education opportunities. Arbitrary rise in cut off marks negates this very right.

For example, let us imagine that a candidate has come up with 89.9% marks though the cut off mark is 60%. This candidate is not likely get a chance for higher education in an institution of his choice which sets 90% as qualifying cut off mark.

Just see how dangerous this situation is and how hopeless the plight of such a candidate who has scored 29.9% marks more than what is required to get through the qualifying exam! Obviously, there is a case of violation here because, a candidates is not able to get admission not because s/he is poor in marks; rather their being unable to meet the exorbitant benchmark arbitrarily set by the institution in question. Is not a violation of rights? It is, by all means.

In short, skyrocketing cut off marks may be right for higher education schools as they want to reject maximum number of students. But from a student’s point of view, this is not right but a question of rights violation. That is what I feel.

Data on the popularity of Valentine’s Day gifts among men and women in the US.

Please look at the different introductions:

We all know that men and women have different likes when they select something for their dear ones. Here the pie graphs at hand are a testimony to the same. Let us see how preferences of men and women vary when they select something special for each other on Valentine’s Day.

1. These pie charts show how different are the likes of men and women when it comes choosing gift items for their dear ones on Valentine’s Day.

2. The given pie charts show information on different types of gifts that men and women in the US buy for each other on Valentine’s Day.

3. How different are the preferences of men and women when it comes to selecting gift items for each other on Valentines Day.

4. These pie graphs give us a clear picture of what men like for their dear ones and what women like for their dear ones on Valentine’s Day.

It is obvious that the most popular gift is card. Twenty-seven percent of women buy it for their loved ones. On the other hand, only 18% of men go for the same. The most common gifts that men buy comes under the category called ‘other’, 25%, while it is only the third most one for women, 17%. Candy, the second most preferred gift among women, 21%, comes fourth when it comes to men, 14%. Flowers constitute 16% and 11% respectively for men and women.

Jewelry as a gift is almost equally popular among both the genders: nine percent and 10% respectively for each other. Rest of the gifts: perfume or cologne, spa or personal care items and lingerie constitute percentages less than ten, say , four, six and seven percent for men and 10, one, and four percent for women.

So it may be observed that among all the gifts card is the most preferred one and spa or personal care item is the least liked one.

Percentage-wise data on room occupancy in 6 star hotels

The table presents percentage-wise data on room occupancy in six hotels of different star statuses during May to September between 1985 and 2000.

It is obvious that three star hotel Hampton’s had the highest occupancy. In 1985, 1990 and 2000 it had 100% booking whereas in 1995, it came down by 10%. A comparison of these figures with Hotel Olivia and Continental reveals that the former had almost uniform percentages in all four years; 90, 85 89 and 95 respectively. So is the case with the former recording 79, 83 70 and 80 percent respectively.

Coming to Hotel Concorde and Hamilton’s, there is marked difference in their figures. When Hamilton’s enjoyed 100% occupancy in 1985 and 1990, its competitor had 10% less booking during the same period. In the following period, Hotel Concord witnessed its all time low booking which was three times less than previous year’s, but in 2000 it recorded more than two times increase, 65%. But the figures of Hamilton’s kept on decreasing, with 1995 and 2000 reading 95 and 70% respectively.

It is evident that Hampton’s enjoyed the highest percentage of occupancy and the Tower had the least.

Many premier higher education institutions go raising the cut off marks for admission to certain courses. This is highly beneficial for such schools.

• How beneficial is it for such schools of repute?
• Do you think it is an encouraging trend if viewed from a student’s angle?
High end academic institutions adopt many ways to screen students so that they can offset competition. Setting higher cut off marks is one such ploy. Needless to say, such institutions stand to gain great benefits, but students stand to lose. 40

The primary benefit, in my opinion, is that these institutions go lucky enough to groom the cream of the student community. Higher cut off marks means brilliant students whose ultimate aim is highflying careers. Secondly, the institution comes to experience smooth functioning in academic and administrative terms. This is by way of manageable students and their pre-set goals. Thirdly, these students are bound to fetch great results taking the reputation of the school to new highs. Frequent campus interviews, cent percent placement record and rising financial independence, to mention a few, are the other benefits. 100

However, when it comes to students, the story is dangerous. The primary danger is that it deprives many brilliant students of their chance for deserving education. For example, what is the difference between two students who have got 89.9% and 90% marks respectively? Besides this, many candidates without much merit may get in with their higher degree of exam writing skills. But who does not know that marks alone cannot evaluate a student and writing exam is a skill? Finally, higher benchmarks may divide students. This will make a few rich richer and the rest poorer. 100

In short looking the prospect of institutions and the problems of students, I tend to say raising cut off marks needs to be discouraged. Instead institutions much realize that higher education is meant for the deserving not for the high-scoring. 40

There may be differing views on what schools should teach the young, and the one view in question that schools should teach the young how to be a good parent sounds rather too much to be accommodated. Let me prove it.

We all know that school is a platform for the young to groom themselves into what they actually are and what they are capable of. Making children learn how to be good parents is just one of the roles of schools. This role can be facilitated by incorporating a few lessons in the curriculum. On the other hand, expecting schools to be places that make every young how to be a good parent sounds premature to me because school has enormous other roles that help a student lead a meaningful life. Being a good parent is just of the parts of a meaningful life.

My disagreement is on a question: are students prepared and matured to pick up the lessons on how to be a good parent when they are at school? Besides this, I do not think that a young person with right knowledge on how to be a good parent will be able to lead a meaningful life; rather I sternly believe that the purpose of schooling is to make one lead a meaningful, productive and civilized life. Lessons on how to be a good parent can be taught by parents themselves, if need be, or schools can contribute to it by way of curriculum amends.

Looking at the view in question, I tend to conclude that it is premature to make every young learn to become a good parent. Rather schools have got many other roles than this. However, it is fair that children learn a few things on parenting.

Living without money: the ultimate of green lifestyle practice
I just read about an inspiring individual, so bent on affecting social change, he willingly and happily has given up cash, and as such, has embraced a lifestyle that doesn’t require any. The most profound thing, to me at least, about his choice and the intent behind it, was the realization to which he came while talking to a friend about how to affect the most change:
“We were looking at the world’s issues – environmental destruction, sweatshops, factory farms, wars over resources – and wondering which of them we should dedicate our lives to. But I realised that I was looking at the world in the same way a western medical practitioner looks at a patient, seeing symptoms and wondering how to firefight them, without any thought for their root cause.”

He goes on to say that, “One of the critical causes of those symptoms is the fact we no longer have to see the direct repercussions our purchases have on the people, environment and animals they affect.” This stuck me deeply, as it is the primary reason I do what I do.

I firmly believe that if people truly knew how each and every one of their decisions to buy a certain chocolate bar, or type of coffee, or stick of gum, or pair of shoes, or car, or stock options, or cell phone plan; affects a chain of people and various parts of our environment in varying degrees of destructive ways; they would choose more conscientiously. I firmly believe that education and information, as well as being a living example, are the ways to help affect social and environmental awareness and change.

GRAPH ON THE POPULARITY OF MODES OF TRAVEL TO AND FROM WORK
The graph breaks up data on different modes of transport people of a European city used to travel to and from work in three periods, 1960, 1980 and 2000.

To begin with, in 1960, 20% people traveled by bus. This figure went above 25% in 1980. But, when it was 2000, the percentage came close to 15%. When it comes to car users, in 1960, hardly seven percent people used it. In 1980, it showed more than three times increase, 25%, and in 2000 it went past 35%, recording a seven fold rise.

Coming to bike, its popularity declined over the years. When more than 25% people biked to work in 1960, the corresponding figure for 1980 was 20%. The biggest fall was recorded in the year 2000; hardly seven percent. The percentage of those who walked stood at 35% in 1960. In the following two periods, it stood slightly above 15% and below 10% respectively.

In short, bus had been very popular in all three periods whereas car’s polarity kept on increasing. But walking and biking turned unpopular over time.

Aged population is taken by some as a great asset to the younger generation whereas there are some who feel that rising old age population is a social liability.
Essay 011
• Which view do you support and state why?
Prove your points with examples taken from your surroundings.

Human life span is on the rise thanks to better living conditions and medical innovations. This development is taken differently by different people. However, in my view longer-living people are a great source of wealth of varying dimensions.

My first argument supporting this view is that older population has great wealth of knowledge garnered from scores of years’ experience, and this knowledge and expertise cannot be calculated in terms of money. The same way, experts who are healthy enough to continue in some services can be made use of for the betterment of any community. Openings like advisors, resource persons, consultants and the like are worth filled in by senior citizens. It is unfortunate to look at such professionals as a liability.

Let me substantiate my view with a few examples. An aged farmer may not be able to contribute much to farming sector by way of hard work. But he or she is a store-house of farming lessons gathered out of hand on experience, and such knowledge will be great service to modern farming sector. The same way let’s take the case of an academic who is healthy and has some 25 or 30 years’ teaching experience. Is it fair to leave him or her saying that ‘you are so old that you cannot help a society?’ Such a person would do much more to education than any youngster could.

So, to conclude, I think it is the duty of the healthy ones to make use of those ones who have become old and, some times, unhealthy by contributing to society. Calling them a liability is no sign of civilization. Worldly wisdom is a virtue.

While conventional games were physically, socially and intellectually charging, new generation games are found to be the other way round; making participants passive and enervating.
Essay 014
• To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?

Games of olden times had many dimensions; social, physical and so on. Such games, naturally, fostered many faculties in several different ways. However, what we have today in the name of games, to a greater extent, are not so involving as to make the participants any better.

The roles games play in the mind and body of children are decisive. A game can either foster or spoil their faculties depending on the nature of the games. Fortunately, children of the past had several such physically, socially and intellectually involving games. For example, in our culture, there used to be many country games like throw ball, hide and seek, treasure hunt, chase and catch etc. These games involved group of children and they had been able to pick up better physical health, intellectual acumen and socializing skills by playing such games.

On the other hand, the games children play today are less involving and more isolating? Primarily, most of such games are individual games or maximum for pairs. Secondly, today, it is all supported by technology and children happen to use many gadget and devices which are more programmed than intellectually charging. For example, there are video games of all types, snake and ladder and the like. However, there are a few games like scrabble, jigsaw and crossword puzzles which are some way able to benefit children.

In short, I don’t think there is much disagreement on the view that older games were more involving and encouraging, and children picked up many skills and faculties. But today, barring a few games, most of the activities children do in the name of play are less involving and rarely fostering.

Though sportspersons do not seem to be doing much to the general well being of the public, they are given enormous benefits and rewards upon achievements.

• How right it is to say that sports icon don’t do much to public?
• How far do you endorse the rewards and honours they receive?

I do not need to think twice to say it is premature to claim that sports persons do not do much to public. They do much more than anyone else, and the rewards and honours they come to experience are what they very much deserve.

Let me prove that sports persons do much to public. A sports successful sports icon is one who works as the ambassador of a nation, torch bearer for the younger generation and, above all, the flag carrier of the nation. As we all know, sports is a huge industry which promotes allied trades and commerce, strengthens international relations and even acts as catalysts that mend long broken diplomatic relations.

Besides all these, it is right to say that sports persons are able to transform people and influence their attitudes to social and national causes. As a result, people look at them with great expectations and they in turn live up-to the expectations of the public. Are they not doing anything to the public? They are.

By the way, how are the public and nation going to reward them for all these services? Sports titles, honourary positions, degrees, entitlements and above all huge monetary rewards are a few tokens that make sportsperson motivated. For example, some governments offer monetary rewards, some universities honour them with doctorates and some institutions appoint sports icons as their ambassadors of social cause and national causes. Needless to say, it is all worth endorsing.

In short, sportspersons are flag carriers of a nation, and they do much to people directly and indirectly. But, for the ordinary public, their service may not be that visible. And the honours and rewards they enjoy, therefore, are much deserving as well. 270 words Ajaypeesdoc

Since it is demand that promotes production of all goods, both good and bad, the responsibility of eliminating unfriendly products- for humans and environment - lies in the hands of every individual consumer.

• As an educated individual how best can you endorse this view?
• What other ways can you suggest to cut down on the production of harmful goods?

Lives on the Planet are threatened by many harmful products, and it is very much true that demand is what promotes such products. So as an educated individual I cannot but support this view being discussed, and I have my own suggestions in the respect.

In this connection, I find it right to stick on only one point. That is, no industry can survive for long unless what it produces is sold out in time. The things that go into the making of an industry are so diverse that no industry can survive without sales, profit and progress. All these business factors are governed by demands for what ever is produced.

Here comes the role of consumers. For example; if consumers unanimously decide on one thing that they won’t buy harmful products like tobacco, toxic beverages, suffocating plastics and similar health and ecological hazards, there is going to be slow death of all companies that produce such products. So it is demand that decides. The ball is in the court of consumers.

Apart from this, there are other alternatives, too. I think it is a good idea to impose ceilings on the quantity of products manufactured, so that free availability can be curtailed. Besides this, governments can decline all fresh applications for permission to open fresh industries. Including a lesson in the school curriculum highlighting the dangers of harmful products will make the upcoming generation stay away from hazardous products.

In short, when it comes to eliminating harmful products, the major role needs to be played by consumers. Along with this, the suggestion afore made can also do some favours to our Planet and all the lives on it.

15 Ways to Reuse Newspaperposted by Becky Striepe Aug 9, 2011 5:05 pm

THIS IS A DOWNLOADED ARTICLE FROM CARE2CARE

The U.S. publishes over 24 billion newspapers every year, and that’s not the only place that newsprint turns up. People use it to wrap packaging, to print junk mail fliers, and to create coupons. All told, that is tons and tons of paper waste every single year.

Recycling paper is a great way to put a dent in this waste, but paper recycling is far from an ideal solution. It’s inefficient, and each time you recycle paper, you’re really downcycling it into an inferior product.
We don’t get a paper at our house, but we still end up with our fair share of newsprint somehow. Sometimes, a fragile thrift store or yard sale find comes wrapped in newspaper. Other times, we get junk mail printed on newsprint. No matter how newsprint manages to creep into your life, I’m guessing that you cringe at the thought of wasting it, too.
Rather than toss all of that paper in the recycle bin, you can reuse old newspaper around your home and in the garden!
1. Clean windows or glass. Dip crumpled newspaper into water mixed with a splash of white vinegar, and clean those windows up without any streaks or harmful chemicals!
2. Burn it up. Instead of a starter log in the fireplace or at a bonfire, use tightly rolled pieces of newsprint instead.
3. Make a weed barrier. If you’re building a raised bed, lay out pieces of newspaper before you fill it up with dirt. The paper will help keep weeds from invading.
4. Wrap some gifts. It’s fun to go through your papers to find cute and colorful pages to use as gift wrap. When I was a kid, we loved wrapping presents up in the Sunday funnies.
5. Pack it up. Instead of plastic bubble wrap, wrap valuables in newspaper for shipping, and pad your box with more crumpled paper. You can take it a step further and include some ideas in the package for how your recipient can reuse all of that paper, too!
6. As origami paper. Cut your newspaper into squares and get folding! Newsprint is great at holding folds. Just be gentle, since it’s a bit more prone to tearing than store bought origami paper.
7. In the fridge. Keep the bottom of the veggie drawer from getting nasty by lining it with newspaper. It will absorb liquid and odors.
8. For ripening fruit. If you’ve picked up some under-ripe peaches, avocados, or other fruit, wrap them in newspaper to ripen them more quickly. Paper bags also work for this.
9. Shine on. Give the shine back to your stainless steel sink by gently scrubbing it with wadded up, wet newspaper.
10. Compost it. Newspaper makes great bedding for a worm bin. Tear into strips and let those red wigglers turn it into gardening gold!
11.Papier mache. Get crafty with that old newsprint! You can make all sorts of fun papier mache projects, like a piñata or cool bangle bracelets.
12. Donate them. Your local animal shelter can use newspapers to line their cages. Some even shred them up to use as kitty litter, when the budget is tight. You can also donate them to thrift stores, where they’ll use them to pack up fragile items that sell.
13. Line the puppy crate. Dog owners who are crate training can use old newspapers to line the puppy crate. It makes cleanup much easier when your sweet pup has an accident.
14. Make handmade paper. Grab your blender and turn old newspaper into pretty, recycled paper. Handmade paper is great for making invitations and little cards. You can also mix some seeds into your paper pulp to turn newsprint into recycled seed paper that your recipients can plant!
15. Spin it into yarn. Feeling crafty? If you’ve got a spindle handy, you can whip up recycled newspaper yarn, then knit or crochet your paper into anything you like!
Of course, the best way to reduce the amount of newspaper waste in your life is to avoid picking up a physical newspaper at all. You can read news online or subscribe to a paper on your e-reader instead of buying a paper paper. It’s a little bit harder to stop getting junk mail, but companies like Manilla are working to make that a bit easier.
What other ways have you guys reused old newspaper? Let’s keep the reuse inspiration going in the comments!

Wingsuit flying

The art of flying the human body through the air using a special jumpsuit that shapes the human body into a airfoil, with fabric sewn between the lets and under the arms, which creates a lift, once you reach a safe height, a parachute is developed and you land safely.

This is a suit meant for people bored of bungee jumps, for those willing to take one step further in the never ending quest for a risk-induced high. Of course you need to overlook the minor inconveniences of a silly-looking, clown-like costume.

But once one is able to conquer the dread of being seen in the silliest outfit, you are truly in for a wild ride. Imagine a free fall from heavens, nothing between and the earth. It is a minute where you are truly one with the universe after which you literally parachute back down to reality.

This is not merely adventurous, it is really a heavenly experience only a few daring alone can come to experience while they are alive. 170 words

Caving or spelunking

It is a recreational and adventure sport of exploring caves. In the last century, this activity developed into a sophisticated, athletic pastime. This sport activity adventurous primarily because, we all know, caves are unknown areas under the earth, and they can really be dangerous.

The dangers may range from getting lost, to gas attack and even to death. Physical exhaustion is the major risk that leads to more serous dangers on the way to the cave or way back.

Cave hunting is really a pastime and adventure sport of many because we have got great historical reference about caves of all shapes and types, from old ages. There are cavers around the world who relentlessly pursue their dream mission of identify the myth of Aladyin’s cave.

The same way many people are interested in finding new unexplored caves to study the chemistry of cave formation, and their role in the ecology and the life and species that thrive in the darks of the earth.

Not many would believe that caves hid many mysteries like dangerous pools, huge pitfalls and labyrinthine pathways that would take a caver to nowhere at all. Getting lost in a cave is like getting buried alive.

All these risks notwithstanding, there are daredevils who pursue this sport just for fun, adventure and knowledge. 210 words

Street luge
Street luge is an extreme gravity powered activity that involves riding a street luge board. It is also referred to as a sled, down a paved road or course. Street luge is also known as land luge or road luge.

Though it is almost like skate boarding where one stands on the wheeled board and manage one’s moves, in the case of street luge the person is on a lying position looking at the sky.

The wheeled luge will be moving light flashing object and person on it will experience a kind of reeling pleasure of speed and adventure taking place at the same time. The risks involved, needless to say are many.

Since one is speeding around on a board that one probably cannot control the chances of getting injured by hitting against something are many. The casuality may be really deadly.

It is almost like a motor accident in which the drive fails to control the vehicle or the vehicle hesitates to obey the frantic control manipulation of the driver. All these risks involved, people who go for this adrenalin rush are many.

This sport is seen n the western world where the times and places for this are much common han elsewhere. 200 words

Wake boarding

Wakeboarding is a surface water sport. It involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a board of water behind a speeding boat. It is actually a combination of water skiing, snow boarding and surfing.

Since it is a surface water sport, this is not so risky as any other adventure sport. Those who can manage themselves on water for a while are able to enjoy the adventures and excitements of the see bed without much risk.

This is an exhilarating activity which involves a water skiing board on which one stands and the person holds on a rope that is attached to a speeding boat. One has to hold on both for his/her life and for the fun alike once on is on board.

The whirling and swinging of the boat will decide the amount and nature of excitement. But the risk factor cannot be ruled out. This is so because a speeding boat ahead of you and you are pulled to it every moment.

The risk of hitting against water could be really deadly, but not many such cases have been reported. So it is right to say wakeboarding is one of the safest means of adventure as well as water sport activity. 200 words
