Some people say the advent of the Net has left man confined to smaller personal spaces, whereas there are people who hold the view that it has cast man far and wide.

• Look at the views and say what you feel about the advent of the Net?

The Internet has been a topic of discussion since its inception. Major two views have been whether it has shrunken man into smaller cubicles or he has been taken to a wider world out. Let me see how right these views are.

Compared to the past, man is blessed with much better conveniences thanks to the advent of IT enabled services. As a result, he does not need to travel far and wide for everything. Now, things are much closer than they were and man’s movement stands limited greatly to personal office spaces and private quarters. For example, today the internet is a career platform, a venue for socializing, an market space, a great source of information, a channel for spreading information, and 24x7 medium of communication. So, man tends to confine himself into smaller spaces lately.

However, when I look at the other angle, it is a little more relevant. Today, man is better cast out than he was. This can be substantiated by citing a small example. Today, man remains in touch with a virtual world outside which does not recognize time or geographical barriers. Information is accessed, people living in far off continents see each other on a daily basis; they communicate, collaborate and do business as well. Here man’s physical presence is digitally transported to a virtual world of opportunities.

Observing the views in question, what I feel is that today man is able to convert his wonderful, wide world into three Ws. In such a context, he is in smaller places, but the extent of his reach is as big as the world itself. He is where he wants himself to be. The latter is indeed something.
