Speak about a book you’ve read
What the book is
When you read it
What it is about
Why you like to read it
Well, frankly speaking, I am not a voracious reader of books
But all my reading stands confined to periodicals, and Dailies and the like.
It does not mean that I haven’t read any book. I have read a few.
Here let me talk about a small book I read a few years ago.
It is an English novel titled Virtual world out
and it was written by Catherine choppelhall ………………….
It was a penguin edition published in India. I got it from an old books vendor
This book deals with the story of a housewife, who suddenly turns herself into a career woman thanks to the world of opportunities she happens to have by way of globalization.
As we know, globalization has opened up great chances for educated housewives. Though this development was a blessing, many housewives find it extremely difficult to run the show as housewife, career woman, wife, homemaker and above all a woman with personal likes and dislikes.
The book opens as the protagonist Cather Ren opens and reads a call letter for an interview. She stops in between, and dashes back to her yesterday, and she ruminates over her coming days. Her world was going to change all of a sudden.
It does in the following pages. What follows is a hilarious course of action the author puts the protagonist through.
With great humour and the same time not losing the seriousness of the plot,
The author takes us to a tour of life though the life of a modern working woman.
Her pleasures of working, pleasures of managing many things, possibilities in the pipeline, worries of a mother who fails to offer quality parent time her two kids, complaints of his working husband, the rift that develops between them on the basis of career milestones and so goes the list of events of the novel.
The writing is really a page turner, and the reading almost like living a life through the trails and travails of modern working woman. This book has great relevance to professionals like us and that must be the reason I went on engrossing myself in the pages of the book.
There are a lot may incidents in the novel which are touching and at the same time making us thinking. I left me thinking of the life, career, family, society, friends and my personal limitations and strengths.
All these of course make me like the author think of reading the book again, if time permits.

Green and going back to basic needs
1.
Man cannot be going modern any further because the Planet Earth has come to such a pass that it is not able to sustain material and resource based modernity any more.
• How far can you endorse this view?
2.
Technology enabled modernity has made every individual an island making him ignore the fact that there was a face-to-face community in the past.
• Argue for and against this view
3.
Diseases and discomforts people have today are directly proportional to the comfort quotient they happen to enjoy by way of technology enabled services.
• Do you agree or disagree with this?
4.
Entertainments and leisure activities children today enjoy have become what some anthropologists call ‘enervating exercises’.
• How appropriate is this view?
• How differently children of the past kept themselves entertained?
5.
Science and technology has come a long way, and human life as such has become much more comfortable than it was before. But this view is not shared by all.
Look at this view objectively, and say what makes some people dissent with this opinion?

Man’s efforts towards being modern have been creating great inconvenience to the Planet, and it seems to be near impossible for the Planet to accommodate any more modernization. This state of affairs sounds very much true.
Man has been able to make great modernization exercises in his life, and, as a result, future of the Planet stands threatened. This is due to extreme exploitation of resources, too much dependence of materials, material related comforts, ever increasing pollution and shortages of all sorts. These shortages may range from essentials like fresh water and pure air to food and energy instruments. For example, there are media reports that huge numbers of people across the world are threatened either by extreme climatic conditions or man made ecological imbalances leading to draughts and heat waves.
Let me substantiate it further. Modernization in simple terms is man’s urge for more comforts, his ever increasing needs and insatiable greed. This is more so when it comes to technology enabled comforts. This is putting the Planet in great troubles by way of temperature rise, resource crunch, toxic waste accumulation, depletion of green cover and ground water levels, and the list is endless. So it is greatly true that further modernizing is no more possible.
In short, time has come for modern man to think in terms of living with basic needs. It does not mean that he should stop refining himself, rather it means that he should stop exploiting the planet without giving it any room for sustain itself.

Some people believe that today’s children have much freedom.
• To what extent do you agree or disagree to this.
• Give reasons and examples.
When it comes to the freedom children enjoy today, it is rather true that they are much freer compared to their counterparts in the past. But there are a few areas where today’s children are under a few controls. There are reasons for this.
Today, nuclear family is the order, and they are known for greater freedom. This freedom quotient is getting shared more by children than by anyone else in such families. For example, nuclear parents are very much conscious of the welfare of their children, whose number is, ironically, either one or two, and this sense of welfare is getting reflected in the form of greater freedom quotient.
Let me cite an example. Today, children are free to enjoy any media they like. This may range from films, computers, cell phones and even the latest communication possibilities are in the hands of children. So is the case with the freedom they share with their parents. They are rather friends than anything else.
If we juxtapose this with the children of the past, things were different. They did not get this much freedom: freedom for movement, freedom to express, enjoy and even participate in family decision making.
All there greater freedom quotient notwithstanding, there are a few areas where today’s children are not as free as those of the past. In the past children had great fun doing outdoor activities; they had been given enough freedom to study whatever that wanted, and there were cases in which children they were allowed to skip regular academic programme and pursue any area of theirs interest. These things, unfortunately, are unimaginable for children these days.
So, it is right to conclude that there is great substance in the view that today’s children are freer, but this freedom is at the cost of some other precious things associated with childhood. Such things were the privileges of the children of the past.

Children today are much freer than their counterparts in the past. Some say that this is a welcome development.
• How far can you support the first view?
No one would like to lose their freedom. Of course, it is a necessity of human beings. But, more freedom is harmful especially in the case of children. Unfortunately, today's children enjoy a lot of freedom. At the face of it, I find it rather agreeable to a great extent.
First of all, today’s life style and family structure are the major causes for greater amount of freedom enjoyed by children compared to those in the past. Today people have to run faster to meet the demands of time and manage the busy schedule. As a result, children of young professional couples are left at home alone or sent to kindergarten. Such children often get much freedom since they are free from adults’ close supervision. For example, one of my aunt's son started to use bad words recently. We were shocked by hearing that. But after a councelling only it was revealed that he learned those words from his favourite television programmes.
The other factor, which I find, results in more freedom for children is the nuclear family system. Nowadays most of the couples in my place have only one or two children. This results in much affection and attachment towards kids. Because of this parents of our society usually neglect children's mistakes and misbehaviors. Actually, they do not want to scold their kids. Eventually, this attitude makes children grow with bad habits and tendencies.
In short, when freedom is a must for humanity more freedom is a curse, especially children. If we ignore this condition, in future, we may have to pay dearly for that. Excess, what ever it is, is no good at all. Total 260 words

Some say children should be give enough freedom to commit mistakes so that learning will be free and fun, but there are some who claim that it is a good to instruct children not to make mistakes so that they would be cautious and their learning time-saving.
• Which view do you support and state why?
Should children be given enough opportunities to make mistakes so that they can learn things easily? Or children should be trained in such a way that they do not make any mistakes so that learning will be more effective and time saving? Opinions differ. This essay tries to explain how children are benefited by free learning with enough opportunities to make errors.
To begin with, psychologists have proved that “trial and error” is an easy method of learning. They have proved it by doing experimentations on animals. So, with the aid of genuine examples, it can be argued that making mistakes is a better way of learning things. It can also be added that committing errors helps children to find other ways to find solutions all by themselves. A wrong once corrected by will get set permanently in children’s minds.
Additionally, when children are allowed to make mistakes, they will be in a more relaxed mood which is essential for leaning. This will eventually let them score high. It can also be seen that pupils brought up in a relaxed environment are more enthusiastic than those coming from stringent backgrounds.
On the contrary, when children are slowed to make mistakes, it is necessary that there should be a competent person to correct them. Moreover, it is not uncommon that, once a child is allowed to make an error, he or she may deliberately try to make mistakes next time thinking that somebody is there to guide them. This will hamper their creativity. Even though children who are given strict instructions not to commit mistakes work hard to improve their learning process, they definitely lose some sort of creative thinking.
In short, I would personally suggest that, in order to mould a generation that is sharp in mind and shaped in body, should be given some freedom to make errors so they can correct themselves and learn more.

Factors affecting workers’ performance
An answer by one of my students.
The bar chart illustrates the result of survey conducted by a personnel department on employees of two age groups 19-30 and 45-60 to find out what all factors mattered when it came to their performance.
It can be seen that, of all the people surveyed, both youngsters and older people, expressed the view that their performance at job was influenced by money. Similarly, almost same amount of people suggested that team spirit was the second factor affecting their performance.
Among those people aged 45-60 years, almost equal number of people gave importance to competent boss, promotion prospects and job satisfaction. Only 20% of older people suggested job security as an influencing factor for their work performance.
However, more than 80% of young workers considered that chance for personal development, relaxed working environment and promotion prospects as influential. Also work environment was suggested by the least number of people who were surveyed.
Over all it may be said that factors affecting performance differ substantially when age differs, but there are a few common general factors for all.
That is the end of the report.

I was doubtful/confused about my candidature. But my parents and friends were there to give me confidence and courage. If they were not there, I would not have become an employee now. It was their efforts, help and prayers that made me whatever I am now. Interestingly, when the interview result came out, I was surprised to note that my name was in. Many smart candidates were there for the interview, but many of their names were not in the list. I felt really great.
2. I had attended some other interviews before I attended this one. Many of my friends also had attended interviews like I had (did). But no one of them was successful. But all those attempts were giving me courage to do better in the following interviews. Anyway I had to prepare well before I attended this one. I was in the habit of taking notes while reading. These notes were compiled and kept in order. Since I wanted to use these notes later in my life, I was very careful and serious about them. Reading was my passion and I was reading any thing and everything that came my way. I had my priorities too when it came to reading. I always liked to read novels and short stories. It was easy for me to find such books. Our local library had a good stock of them. I liked them very much, and I visited the library whenever I had time and I read some stories 5/10 times. I loved repeat(ed) reading. It made me a fast reader.
4. Before joining here, I had been working with another firm. My responsibilities there included many things. I could have been a Manager now if I had been wise in decision making. Still, I do not know whether I was making the right decision at that time. I might have been thinking differently those days. During that period I would (used to) consult a lot of people whenever I (had) faced a small problem. They would call me, doubting Thomas. Those times were really great when I think of them now. In my last job, I had many opportunities to meet new people. I met them, talked to/with them, sat with them, travelled and ate with them. At times, I went to their places and stayed with them. Some of them visited my home too. That time was really interesting. I did not meet even a single visitor who was not happy to do business with us. Once, a visitor came to see me. He asked me whether it was possible for me to visit his place. I told him, yes. I went to his place. When I went there, I was surprised to see the preparations he and his family had made for me. On that day I realized the importance of friendship and greatness of being a guest.

1. I was very happy when I got my first salary because I was realizing that I was able to work and earn money as my parents were earning. One day I was told that there was an interview session going to happen.
I did not have any (had no) problems with regard to the theory side of the interview, but when it came to practical side, I did have to (had to) consult many of my friends to find better answers for possible questions.
3. I used to read a lot of books and journals as part of my hobby and this habit had helped me a lot in my studies too. This time, it was this reading that was coming to help me.
They were all for good.

Reading ARTICLES as a related activity to improve your language skills:
When it comes to reading as a sub-work in IELTS, it is not reading something simply to understand what it is about, rather it is, what I call, quizzical or analytical reading. What I mean by this is this:
• As you go on reading, look more for how an idea is presented than for what the idea is. This may help you identify the structure, the tense form, coherence and cohesion of ideas and finally, the related vocabulary being used by the writer.
• Remember the best way pick up vocabulary is to find them used, not by looking at dictionaries and thesaurus. They do help of course, but it is more about how they are used than about what they actually are.
• Remember no two persons write, speak, listen or read alike. So is the case with you: You are what your language is, at least in IELTS. Therefore, keep in mind the fact that every article you read has something new for your life. AJAYPEESDOC. 18.2.012
• The best way to master grammar and structure is to read the write ups in the media. These are written masters and they have their own way of writing. Read out their thoughts, identify their language skills, locate what you need, and finally internalize the idea every article brings in.
• Reading a newspaper daily is like attending language class handled my many people. Read those articles you are interested in. Let be sports, business, politics, or whatever. What matters most is not what you read or how long you read a day, but it is whether read regularly or not.
• While reading, you my see new words and expressions. Stop at them, read the sentence again, check whether the idea the author wants you understand is coming up. If it is not, guess. And ask someone who you have around you. And finally go for a dictionary. Dictionary is the last resort. You have to make your available language skills to work before you go for a consultation.
• And finally, all the articles you may read may not look useful, but let me tell you, all those articles have something to offer you in the long run. It is not for nothing people read, it is not out of any prejudice teachers and trainers tell you; read, read and read.

IELTS IS A LANGUAGE TEST. THAT TEST PROCESS IS DONE BY USING YOUR KNOWLEDGE BASE: SO LET YOUR KLOWLDEDGE BE THE PLATFORM YOU MAY PERFORM ON. DO NOT BE HIGHSOUNDING.
Please do not be obsessed with the number and size of your points. It is much better to convincingly prove a point with a single idea than to parade a series of points in poor, broken language. Cohesion, coherence, grammar/structure, punctuation and vocabulary: do not compromise on these. Please Remember, you can make mistakes, but decent mistakes.
• How writers introduce, connect, contrast, compare, exemplify, agree, disagree, agree to disagree, emphasize, support, oppose, criticize and counter, punctuate, give punch to, and prove points or simply present ideas? This is what you are expected of READING while you get trained for IELTS. Good luck: May the right words be with you!!!!

Some people say that it is a good idea to make periodic medical check ups compulsory for all adults so that the health status of a state can be better kept, whereas some others say maintaining health status is more personal than institutional.
• Look at both the views say what you feel about social health?
It is a fact that health status involves several factors. Periodic medical check up is one of them. However, coming to compulsory medical check up, what is I is feel that keeping health status is more a personal responsibility than institutional.
Let me prove that compulsory medical check for adults cannot do much to the general health status of a populace. Undergoing medical check ups is one thing and going through a medical regime subsequent to a check is something different. In a national perspective, we cannot expect the whole adult population to be strictly following what ever is medically advised. Social status, per capita income, gender difference, nature of employment, to mention a few, of people may vary and not many can stick to the instructions given after every check up.
On the other hand, if people take it as a point that being healthy is something great and, thereby, able to understand that prevention is better than cure, they will be able to keep their health status all by themselves. For example, informed people will eat right, work out well, stay away from hazardous habits, go for periodic check ups and identify health risks in time, and they will invite medication whenever needed. This will lead to better health status, of course. So health status is more personal than institutional in many more ways than one.
Therefore, looking at both the views, I find it right to conclude that health status of a population is determined more by personal interests than by institutional involvement. Compulsory medical checkup is fine, but it is just fine for the sake of checkup, not for anything else.

An artwork you liked
What it is about
When you saw it
Why you liked it
A tentative answer to a speaking topic given above.
Well, it is really interesting to appreciate artworks.
Recently, I happened to visit an art exhibition
Hosted by a group of local artists in my place.
There were a lot of paintings, drawings, applied art forms and so on
Among them I got hooked to an artwork done by one Mr. Warrior
I do not know much of his whereabouts.
What I liked most is the way he presents his thought
Actually it was a modern art form in which he was trying to
Highlight some social issues like child abuse, female feuticide
Aggression against women and children.
It was oil on canvass, and the work was so attractive in the sense that
Ordinary folk themselves could understand the message
It was an blend of thought, creativity and imagination
And the colour combination he used looked really interesting
That he was selecting hard colours and strong strokes to represent
Ideas that are really hard pressing and that need immediate attention
In the bottom of the canvas, there was a message
Running into only four words.
“The real is not”
what I understood is this,
things we see around us
are not actual, and we do not see how much of
what is happening around.
Frankly speaking this artwork made me think
I knew that there are so many evils working around us.
And, yes, I liked it very much.
That is all about the artwork l liked.
A machine that was developed lately
What it is
When it was developed
How it works and helps
Well, our times have a seen a lot developments
And I would like talk about a new medical machine
Developed recently, and it is going to be great help to man.
The machine is called ultra sound signal chain
Which, the developers say, would help doctors and patients alike.
It’s the latest development in medical care, and
The developers Frost and Sullivan says that this machine
Can be commercially developed within a few months
It is said that when produced commercially,
this machine will be small enough to be portable,
and it is designed to fit in ICUs, ambulances
and similar mobile triage situations.
When it comes to its medial application
It works much more efficiently than any other ultra sound based
Diagnosing device. It is very simple, and almost sound proof and
It works on a new microchip which functions like a chain does
Identifying ultrasounds one after the other and ending up with the
Last possible detection, that is and most indecipherable sound beats
This is best suited for people
who are suffering from age related ailments.
I think this chip-supported machine will revolutionize
The way geriatric care works now these days.
As our century is bound to look after greater number of
Aged people than it was before, this is medical machine
Will give the aged population a bit relief.
Yes, this is a great development, sir.

Mobile phones have immobilized our life to a greater extent. How right is to believe so?
An answer by Jesmi James. This answer is really cut for a seven by all means
It is very much right to say that mobile phones save our energy, time and money and help us to reduce our movements for the sake of passing messages. This write up tries to see how far this devise has made human life immobile.
First of all, cell phones enable us to get connected with our friends, co-workers and family. There is no need for any kind of travel to speak with our dear ones. Needless to say, with the arrival of new versions of cell phones with 3 G facilities, we have got an opportunity for ‘see and talk'. Moreover, communication with people who stay aboard also is very easy as we get connected with them by a single press on a button. Over all this quick connectivity has made everything else to move very fast. 95 words
There are many other factors also which minimize our long journeys. The availability of internet on cell phone is really helpful for candidates and other professionals. For example, in the past, in order to submit an application one needed to go personally to the institution and handover the papers. But, now it is all done online 24x7. One application enables scanning and sending of bio data, copies of certificates and credentials. Above, all one can send an application at any time of the day from anywhere in the world. It is all now incorporated in our mobiles phones.
In short, the affordability, being simplicity and reliability of mobile phones change our relationship with the rest of the world. Even an ordinary man can handle it with ease and there is no wonder if it keeps him stay put and do the job. So it is true to a great extent that smart mobile phones really keep us a little immobile.
Good work and is cut for a seven indeed

The table contains data on the sales of passenger cars recorded in the first three quarters of the year 2010. The figures are given in thousands units per month, and the car brands are Ford, Nissan and Toyota.
Toyota sold 4000 cars in January. Within a month sales went past 14000 units recording more than three times increase. But it was not able to keep the same tempo in the following months and the figure slowly moved up to 16000 at the end of the second quarter. That was its all time high sales, making a four fold increase. But what followed was a huge nose dive which took sales down to 8000 units, recording a fall by 50%. There was a recovery in the third quarter and sales moved back to 12000 units. It was a rise by 50%.

An essay by my online trainee, Ms. Jesmi James
Spending long years at colleges for a professional qualification does not look attractive to many as there are innumerable other ways that make youngsters find their living easier.
• • Do you think it is not good to spend some years at college?
• • How good is it to depend on oneself when it comes to profession?
It is a general belief that professional degrees always help people in one way or the other. But, there are some who say that spending too many years for a professional qualification is worthwhile. Anyway, in my opinion, it all depends upon the attitude of people.
A college provides both theoretical and practical knowledge, and it inspires students to have further studies. As a result, they get a deep knowledge about their subject. Moreover, experienced teachers can guide them and clarify their doubts at any time. In short, after completing his or her degree course, he or she becomes really capable to do a job which is related to their field of education. 88 words
However, it is a fact that many well educated but still unemployed youngsters are present amidst of us. At the same time, some non-professionals get huge payment for their work. Surprisingly, these youngsters do not want to go to college for their higher studies. The reason behind this controversy is strange. Actually, armatures can excel professionals if they really have got the taste and mettle. Many scientists and artists are examples for this. 88 words
To wind up, it is not necessary to get a degree or diploma for a decent job, and I strongly believe that a right person can acquire knowledge by his own effort, and there is enough reason not to spend many years for a qualification.

Hugely populated nations will be able to be stronger than other nations provided the former make use of their human capital wisely.
• Look at this view in the light of the population status of your place.
An essay by my online trainee Jesmi James
It is generally believed that surplus population always do harm to the world. But, in fact, it can change the fate of a nation if it is properly managed. Let me explain it. 33 words
Major global issues like food insecurity, unemployment and poor health care system are widely thought as the aftereffects of increased population. To combat this situation, many politicians and economic experts recommend decreasing the number of people by reducing the birth rate. Though it is being practiced by some countries for ages like China, there is no visible change in those countries’ overall status. On the other hand, they suffer from new issues.
For example, in Japan the number of old people is very high compared to its younger generation. As a result, the total productivity of the nation decreases dramatically day by day.
On the contrary, if managed carefully I can undoubtedly say that human resource is the best of all resources capable of taking a nation to progress in all fields. This is very much obvious in my place. Keralites are well-known for their hard work and resourcefulness. As result, many professionals from my place are placed in high positions in various developed countries. Moreover, the state government gets benefited by their contributions in terms of foreign currency inflow. 73 words
In short, human capital is a non-renewable resource. Definitely, it is the collective responsibility of all to tap their maximum potential so that under developed nations also can make great differences in their economic status. 32 words Total 252 words

Your favourite swimming pool
Where it is
How often you go there
Why you like it
Swimming pool? Well, these days it is hard to find swimming pools in our place. It is now mostly found in hotels and tourist or holiday destinations.
However, I happened to enjoy the convenience of a swimming pool some time back. It is part of famous water theme park in our state.
And I visited this place as part of a tour programme.
It happened last year, and we, a group of friends visited this theme park called Vega land. It s some 75 kms off our place, and we were traveling by a mini bus.
Since, it is a water theme park there are many water related activities and adventures. One of such experiences is the swimming experience we had at that location.
Actually, it is big pool with the sparkling water and clean and secure surroundings.
What I like most is its conveniences like security arrangements,
like floats and airbags meant for children, and those who are not good at swimming.
There are seating arrangements, and they provide some umbrellas and sun beds for those who need them for relaxation after a swim.
Apart from all there, there is separate section with support facilities for males and females, like change room, rest room and make up rooms.
And finally, I need to add that water in this swimming pool is periodically purified. It is done at regular intervals and it is an automatic process. So we can be sure of cleanliness and be on guard against water-borne diseases.
That is all about the swimming pool I like most.

Starting up a career much earlier is taken by some as highly advantageous, whereas there are others who take it the other way round.
Essay 037
• How advantageous or disadvantageous is it in your opinion?
In these times of career opportunities, it is rather easy to say that early career is better. However, this write up makes an attempt to find out what all advantages and disadvantages early career selection offers people today.
Firstly, today, being in the helm of a profession in one’s prime years is taken as a springboard to the upper rungs of a person’s career. For example, he or she who starts up a career early will find faster growth prospects in their twenties itself. Secondly, early financial independence will enable them to support themselves, their family and society at large much early, too. Thirdly, they tend to be go-getters and these people will enjoy great material and social security. This world of survival of the fittest demands such qualities.
All said, let me spare a little space to find out how this idea is going to affect our professionals. Firstly, academic years are the most beautiful times of one’s life. So, when one leaves this space and lands in a world of pressure and responsibilities, there is a little concern. Secondly, there are possibilities for wrong career selection. Realizing the same later and starting up a new career and the like lead to many upheavals in one’s life. And, finally, if everyone starts working with their basic qualifications and ignores higher studies, who is going to take care of research, development and teaching?
Looking at the findings on early career selection, I find it right to say that it is equally positive and negative. Since career and higher studies are matters of one’s attitude, opinions differ from person to person.

While conventional games were physically, socially and intellectually charging, new generation games are found to be the other way round; making participants passive and enervating.
Essay 014
• To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?
Games of olden times had many dimensions; social, physical and so on. Such games, naturally, fostered many faculties in several different ways. However, what we have today in the name of games, to a greater extent, are not so involving as to make the participants any better.
The roles games play in the mind and body of children are decisive. A game can either foster or spoil their faculties depending on the nature of the games. Fortunately, children of the past had several such physically, socially and intellectually involving games. For example, in our culture, there used to be many country games like throw ball, hide and seek, treasure hunt, chase and catch etc. These games involved group of children and they had been able to pick up better physical health, intellectual acumen and socializing skills by playing such games.
On the other hand, the games children play today are less involving and more isolating? Primarily, most of such games are individual games or maximum for pairs. Secondly, today, it is all supported by technology and children happen to use many gadgets and devices which are more programmed than intellectually involving. For example, there are video games of all types. However, there are a few games like scrabble, jigsaw and crossword puzzles which are some way able to benefit children.
In short, I do not think there is much disagreement on the view that older games were more involving and encouraging, and children picked up many skills and faculties. But today, barring a few games, most of the activities children do in the name of play are less involving and rarely fostering.

Task two question based on today’s editorial in the Hindu on clinical trials.
When it comes to medical research and development, poor nations, as a matter of fact, do not have much to offer, but almost all major medical innovations are either tested or experimented in poor nations.
• Why are poor nations increasingly becoming test labs of the rich?
• What are the dangers involved in this unethical medical practice?

Junk Food: Fast, Cheap and…Not Quite as Cheap as You May Think
Last week I had the pleasure of visiting a non-profit food pantry/soup kitchen here in New York and speaking with the founder of the organization. Along with speaking openly about issues from food insecurity to at risk populations, we also talked about the deceptive notion that fast food and junk food are relatively cheap, high caloric, options compared to fresh, whole foods available in grocery stores and farmers markets. We spoke about how populations that struggle daily with getting quality and nutrient-dense food more often than not opt for convenience store pabulum or fast food fare.
To them, the food is far cheaper and provides an immediate taste reward of fat, sugar, and salt that lends a bit of enjoyment to a life of constant struggle. But the deceptively cheap price tag comes with a long-term price tag of obesity, diabetes, poor nutrition, and an assortment of other health problems. But it is hard to pass up a cheap, and readymade, meal of chicken nuggets, fries, and a Coke when the healthy alternative seems cost prohibitive, and labor intensive.
Mark Bittman, the former Minimalist, and now an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times, wrote a fitting piece over the weekend about how, even though it may seem and look cheaper, junk food is simply not less expensive (in many cases) than feeding yourself and your family a healthy and nutritious meal of your own making.
Critics of the proliferation of junk food like to blame McDonalds, Taco Bell, and the like for tempting low income individuals into eating artificially low priced foods instead of buying fresh vegetables and whole grains (the typical comparison has something to do with the price of a Quarter Pounder compared to the price of a head of broccoli). But Bittman claims this claim is way off base. In general, Bittman claims, despite extensive government subsidies, hyper-processed food remains more expensive than food cooked at home. He compares a $14 meal of roasted chicken with vegetables, salad, and a glass of milk (feeding a family of four) with a dinner at McDonalds (price tag nearly double that for $28).
Using plain old supermarket ingredients, Bittman was able to assemble more than one simple and nutritious meal that came in far under budget compared to the fast food alternatives. Bittman claims, “food choices are not black and white; the alternative to fast food is not necessarily organic food, any more than the alternative to soda is Bordeaux.”
So the issue is not so much money, and the proverbial stretching of the American dollar, but the ability to obtain quality foods, make healthy food choices and to commit to cooking, instead of relying on fast food or premade foods often high in fat, sodium, and sugar. Many people, both in rural as well as urban environments, simply don’t have access to supermarkets and farmers markets where nutritious foods are sold. The Department of Agriculture says that more than two million Americans in low-income rural areas live 10 miles or more from a supermarket, and more than five million households without access to cars live more than a half mile from a supermarket.
But beyond lack of convenience, there exist many issues that perpetuate the problems leading to food insecurity and reliance on junk food. Many households, while not having access, also suffer from a lack of time, ability, and wherewithal to make healthy meals happen at home. Stacking the deck against these populations is the ubiquity of junk food as well as the addictive nature of many of these food choices. Feels a bit overwhelming at times?
So what is the answer? Trans fats and Happy Meals bans? Probably not. What is likely necessary is swift and far reaching political and cultural action – the kind of action that changes the paradigm drastically. “The cultural lies in celebrating real food; raising our children in homes that don’t program them for fast-produced, eaten-on-the-run, high-calorie, low-nutrition junk; giving them the gift of appreciating the pleasures of nourishing one another and enjoying that nourishment together.”
And the political aspect would be forcing the makers of junk food limit marketing to at risk populations and insuring that whole, affordable foods are made available to all populations. If this data is correct and applicable nearly across the board, then how should we effectively spread this truth about the hidden affordability of nutritious foods over the alternative fast foods? Have you had to make the switch from junk to substance? If so, what convinced you that it was both necessary and affordable?

Something that you would like to change in your life
What that is
When and how
What difference it will make
Well, sir, there are a few things in my life
That I personally feel like changing.
The thing I would like to change is my
poor time management skill.
Actually this problem gives me difficulties
In my personal and professional life.
Most of the time, I feel that I don’t have enough time
To do my things. At the same time
I am very much aware that I too have
24 hours like all others do.
So the problem is not with lack of time
But it is poor management of the same.
I wish like to change my attitude to time management
Say, before I fly over to some distant locations.
I know I can do with this habit here,
But In a foreign location, I am sure,
one cannot do without
Proper time management skills
Of course, such a change will make great improvements
in my life, both professional and personal.
More over, I can have great control over things
If I am able to manage my time.
So I would like to change it as fast I can.
But I am very much aware that habits die hard
If there is a will there is a way, I believe so.
So this is what I would like to change in my life.

Today’s world offers many methods to acquire knowledge. This exposure always have left a thirst in people to learn more and more .Though it sounds great when it comes to medical knowledge, people have different opinions. When some find it good others opine that it is not. But I for one stands for the statement that it is really dangerous for the public. 56 words
Over information on health matters makes people do two things. Firstly, acquiring much knowledge makes them confident and eventually they are loosing their family doctors and start to treat themselves which is not at all a good habit. And for another group, this will help create suspicion towards their physicians. For example, patients start to doubt their doctor’s advice since they think that they are having enough knowledge about their health condition. 80 words
Secondly, it encourages people to halt their visit to hospitals for check-ups as part of their follow up. Losing this health consciousness only makes room for unwanted diseases. For example, a fever that has been neglected may turn our to be a rat fever which needs to get urgent medical attention.
46 words
In short, negligence, over consciousness and mental disturbances are the after effects of vast amount of health information which is free of cost. People need to be more careful while getting it to avoid unnecessary tensions and anxiety. 41 words. total 227 words
Two problems JEsmi:
One is under writing
Second thing is one part is missing. Right information in the right hands make people access medication, and cure.
Points:
Over medication
Poor medication
Self medication
Instead of making people health conscious, it makes some people more anxious
And medical professionals get ignored. Unlike other information, health information, if treated wrongly, is a matter of life and death.

For a living, it is a must to do some work. But many cannot make it since they have to give priority for something else. Flexi-time is a great blessing for such people as they can manage both job and personal responsibilities ,and I really think that it is time to put it in action so that the nation too can enjoy its benefits words
First of all, time and talent are precious and that is what makes flexi-time is so important. For example, by utilizing the time of creative people, a company can hasten its growth and augment their profit. Secondly it, encourages workers to be more relaxed and comfortable during job than those sedentary seven or eight hours’ work. From the employers’ point of view, it is a beneficial for them also as they have to pay less to their part-time workers. Hence, it is a total win-win situation for all.
When we look at it from a national perspective, it is very much clear that the country is going to get economic and social advantages. Indeed, it is a tough task to generate enough job opportunities. So, when the new work schedule can make it possible, who can overlook it? ( be averse to it) Socially speaking, flexi-time helps people strengthen their relationships. For example, a job which offers more free time helps one reinforce the bond (bondage is slavery) between family members.
In short, the flexible work schedule not only brings in benefit to person, but also his surroundings. Obviously, it is the time to put this time schedule into practice.

For example, a job which offers more free time helps one reinforce the bond (bondage is slavery) between family members.
In short, the flexible work schedule not only brings in benefit to person, but also his surroundings. Obviously, it is the time to put this time schedule into practice.

Bangalore: Getting a college degree is a very important thing in these days and it says that those who go to college make more money and have more opportunities than those who don't. Earning a college degree, taking an entry-level job, and working for the promotion ladder has always considered as the safest path to success, says Kimberly Palmer, in Business Insider. But despite the fact that research repeatedly shows that people with college degrees earn more and face lower unemployment rates compared to people without college degrees, more people are questioning the value of the degree, reports U.S. News.
There are many businessmen, philanthropist, authors, popular bloggers and academics are increasingly urging about a 'more do-it-yourself' approach and more young people appear to be following their controversial advice.
Michael Ellsberg, author of the new book The Education of Millionaires, argues that many young people would be better off skipping college altogether and going into business for themselves. He says "for the typical kid who isn't really sure what they want to do, and who just wants a general introduction to becoming an adult, $50,000 a year is a very expensive price to pay for that." He also mentioned that his own degree from Brown University proved useless in the real world.
In fact he says his experience there made him a worse writer. He also argues that it's not a good idea to pay tens of thousands of dollars in tuition, and says studies showing that unemployment rates are much higher for those without a college degree are misleading. However, Ellsberg urges people to educate themselves to learn how to market themselves. He acknowledges that in certain training-intense fields, such as medicine or law, a college degree is necessary, but for many young people, who plan to go into the business, art, or technology, there are better and cheaper ways to learn the necessary skills.
Peter Thiel, businessman and philanthropist, offers young people fellowships to start their own businesses instead of going to college; one of the first recipients is Dale Stephens, founder of the website uncollege.org.
Richard Vedder, the American Enterprise Institute has argued that colleges are failing to educate students while getting more and more expensive. An Econoimics Professor, Andrew Sum, at Northeastern University, has pointed out that many young college graduates, age 25 and younger, are forced to take jobs in customer service and retail that don't make use of their college degrees, while these students are still paying very much for them.
Well, though there are many arguments regarding the importance of college degree, but at the same time we cannot deny the fact that in our society college degree is still very important. What do you think about today's degree? Are they really useful? If you know any examples of alternatives to college that are working well, please let us know.

Under-utilization of finished products - like mobiles, computers and similar electronic goods - poses a big threat to nations across the world.
• What are the factors that make it happen?
• How dangerous is this in an environmental point of view?
Underutilization, by definition, is a consumer behaviour which discourages consumers from using a product to its maximum. There are several factors that make it happen, and environmentally speaking, it raises many concerns. Let me elucidate. 35 words
The primary factor that encourages underutilization is the frequent upgrading of technology. When manufacturers bring out new versions of computers and mobiles very frequently, people are forced to buy them discarding their old ones. For example, holding the latest mobile is a trend among people. Secondly, people these days enjoy great buying power which enables them to go for fresh purchases off and on. Thirdly, marketing exercises promoted by sellers and competition between different brands for heightened market share every year also encourages under-utilization. 90 words.
This lifestyle practice is extremely dangerous for the environment. Basically, this practice generates huge pile of electronic waste which non-degradable and toxic. Obviously, processing this waste is an ecological challenge. Secondly, when people abandon a product, there arises the need for fresh production, which leads to further industrialization, and what follows is a chain of actions detrimental to environment. Over exploitation of the ecology for raw material, rising need for fresh energy, extra pressure for natural resources like water and the like are a few links of that chain of action. 90 words
In short, under-utilization per se (as such) is an unhealthy practice worth discouraging at any cost. The environmental consequences it poses are dangerous enough to prove the same. That is what I feel about the whole issue.
