Man cannot be going modern any further because the Planet Earth has come to such a pass that it is not able to sustain material and resource based modernity any more.
• How far can you endorse this view?
Man’s efforts towards being modern have been creating great inconvenience to the Planet, and it seems to be near impossible for the Planet to accommodate any more modernization. This state of affairs sounds very much true.
Man has been able to make great modernization exercises in his life, and, as a result, future of the Planet stands threatened. This is due to extreme exploitation of resources, too much dependence of materials, material related comforts, ever increasing pollution and shortages of all sorts. These shortages may range from essentials like fresh water and pure air to food and energy instruments. For example, there are media reports that huge numbers of people across the world are threatened either by extreme climatic conditions or man made ecological imbalances leading to draughts and heat waves.
Let me substantiate it further. Modernization in simple terms is man’s urge for more comforts, his ever increasing needs and insatiable greed. This is more so when it comes to technology enabled comforts. This is putting the Planet in great troubles by way of temperature rise, resource crunch, toxic waste accumulation, depletion of green cover and ground water levels, and the list is endless. So it is greatly true that further modernizing is no more possible.
In short, time has come for modern man to think in terms of living with basic needs. It does not mean that he should stop refining himself, rather it means that he should stop exploiting the planet without giving it any room for sustain itself.
