That the new generation is suffering from greater stress levels than the older generation is a myth; rather people of all times have experienced varying levels of stress according to the nature of the lives they have lived.

Do you agree or disagree with this view?

Stress is a state of mind a person experiences when things fail to take place in the way one expects them to. If we go by this definition, there is great substance in the view that present generation undergoes greater stress than those of the past is just a myth. People of all times have had their share of stress.

The first thing that makes me believe that stress is an invisible shadow of the times we are living is that there is something unpredictable in life. We cannot sit back and rest assured that everything will fall in place as we expect. For example, I want make a seven for IELTS and the exam is known to be unpredictable to a greater extent.

Therefore, the stress an exam-taking candidate undergoes is peculiar to the exam of the times. In contrast, we all know that, in the past, exams were not that difficult as the mercury of competition was not kept this high; rather there were smaller number of takers for competitive exams, but that smaller number had had their due share of stress thinking of the outcome.

Let me take the case of new generation and its so-called greater stress. Basically, this population is flooded with great possibilities and, as a result, it sets sky-high goals in life. Naturally, when people think of the outcome or what would happen if things fail to happen in their favour, they feel the pinch and get great stress.

It is not that there is greater stress; rather their higher aspirations are the real culprit. Higher is the flight, naturally, bigger is the fall. This fear of big fall is the thing that makes some people endorse the myth that the new generation is at a greater disadvantage in terms of stress. Actually they are not.

My conclusion is no man is an island, and everyone is expected to face the kind of stress according the type of life one lives, and the times one lives in is the real determinant of stress. The people of olden times had it, we have it now and the coming generation is going to have it.
