Telshi From Ireland writes on health care and weight gain.

Health indices of the world are up and finding new highs every passing day. Still there are greater instances of weight gain, mortal diseases and untimely casualties.

·         What do you think are the causes and effects of this ironic state of affairs?

Although the incredible growth has happened in the health field, there are huge numbers of people who face serious problems such as fatal diseases, obesity and so on. This essay will explain the causes and after effects of these unexpected state of affairs.

First of all, in this fast-paced world, people rely more on fast foods because of the conveniences. That would be a major cause for getting many serious diseases in people’s life. For instance, in order to enhance the taste of foods, companies would add more artificial chemicals. Besides, these foods are cheap and easily available in the market and that might be another reason for the popularity of fast foods. Obviously, people get many serious diseases like obesity, cancer when they consume large amount of fast foods. Apart from that, nowadays, advancements in the technologies influence people to spend a lot of time with electronic gadgets. Consequently, the occurrence of obesity and emergencies like accidents are increasing everyday even though there are enormous facilities available these days.

It is well known to all that, in this modern world, these unexpected state of events cause many adverse effects in the society. Firstly, it would be strain on country’s economy to find out the solution to overcome these problems. To cite an example, governments need to establish more hospitals and other facilities to treat fatal diseases and emergencies. Furthermore, people become less confident of health departments. This would have many detrimental effects on future life also.

From the above mentioned points, it can be concluded that, even though   people have enormous health facilities, the numbers of  occurrence of serious diseases are raising every day. Therefore, people and government should be cautious and accountable in order to build a healthy population ahead.

A seven plus answer from Josekutty Ireland

Helping the poor has been a practice for ages, but when it comes to the rich (nations) helping the poor (nations) for long is not a welcome practice.
Do you agree or disagree with this view?

Offer a helping hand to a needy nation is a great thing at all times. However, some believe that helping poor countries for long a long period of time is not a good practice. In my opinion, continuing to support the poor country is acceptable.

First of all, the most obvious reason to support the poor nations is humanitarian prospect. This is to say that, if the people in the poor nations are in need for basic life support such as food, water, shelter and other facilities especially in African countries, then it is the responsibility of all resourceful nations to help these unfortunate countries for a long  period with adequate supplies to sustain a normal life there. So, it seems that helping other nations for long time is just.

On the other hand, some people may say that helping poor nation for long term basis is not apt for any industrialized nations. They point out the fact that it would cause a huge sum of money and government may be forced to put more taxes on the public to make additional funds for their own development and peoples’ welfare. Nevertheless, these are isolated ideas of a particular school and such arguments are not fit for a reasonable circle, and long helping hands to the poor nations is an obligation.

To conclude, long period of help to a poor country’s people is a great way to showcase a rich nation’s responsibility and compassion towards other human beings. No one has ever got damaged oneself by helping others either for once or for a lifetime.

Chart comparing differences in online sales.

The two given pie diagram compare the differences in the online shopping sales for four retail sectors in Canada for the years 2005 and 2010.
Moving to the year, 2005, online shopping sales for both home furnishings and food and beverages were more or less the same, 25% and 22% respectively. Surprisingly, sales recorded for electronics and appliances (35%) got doubled compared to video games’ (18%), which was most sold sector in that year.
Considering the year 2010, in general, there was a marginal difference in the sales for food and beverages and electronics and appliance, which accounted for below 32%.  Also, about one fourth of sales was from video games, which showed 23% in the given year. In contrast, the sales for home furnishing were very limited; 15% only.
To sum up, there was no noticeable variation in sales for the retails sectors in both years. However, online shopping for electronics and appliances were high.

The rich must pay higher tax than the poor: services

When it comes taxing,  some people argue that the richer segment of the population should be required to pay much greater taxes when they avail of services that they are able to manage without government assistance.

Do you agree or disagree with this view?

A uniform tax regime is not seen anywhere in the world, but a separate taxing formulae for the rich and poor in terms of services is contentious. I find it, however, right to impose higher tax on the well off who can forego government-given services.
Though it may sound discriminatory, in any populace that is heterogeneous in income counts, not all are in a position to shoulder all taxes for services. For example, medical care is a service sector where various interventions are for the people to pick from; but the poor are not up for such bigger services. Naturally, the rich have to pay greater taxes so that the generated funds could be channeled to the welfare of the poor.

Let me take the case of services like supplying essentials like cooking gas, oil and water or be it insurance or banking instruments, there may be a system in place to make the rich bear greater taxes. This is a must to have democracy in place. For example, expensive travel services and high-end education are availed more by the rich, but the poor too, at times, may have to make use of such options. Obviously, they should be exempted from high taxes.

There is another argument to cement my position. Government as a machinery has huge fiscal burden every year serving people. But the rich, in their own ways, are at a greater advantage and can do without government-aided services. This will be a great breather for any rule.

My position on the topic stands proved, and there may be many other arguments than what are seen here to justify the fact that taxing need not be uniform for all; rather the rich could be made to bear a little more than the poor. The time for such a tax regime is around.

Ask one 12 commandments

Task one: The 12 Commandments
1.    Never jump into writing. You do not need more that 12 minutes to write 150 words. The remaining time is for you to manage the task, including editing.

2.    Never try to touch all the entries, rises, falls and fluctuations. Highlight what is relevant and simply ignore what is not. Examiners never look for the missing data, but for the missing English.

3.    Never believe that every graph or chart or table has a set answer; rather 100 candidates will write 100 different answers; they are right as well.

4.    Never be under the impression that your writing tool is just for writing answers. Use it for marking, noting, drawing and jotting down information, type of vocabulary and the like.

5.    Never write in huge paragraph as if the whole chart is a single stuff. Try to have meaningful paragraphs and an ineffectual conclusion: at least mention; that is the end of the report.

6.    Never fail to make comparisons when asked: if there is no such demand, it is better to have comparisons. Similarity, contrast, degrees, complexities and the like are able to give you comparative language.

7.    Never write wrong spelling of the words taken from the graph: always observe typography, like big letters and small letters. Currencies, countries days and months.

8.    Never repeat usages, trend words or mix tenses while touching date. You may write present tense while introducing a new data or a point.

9.    Never write all the answers or process chart in active voice: Passive voice will save you a lot of space and time, and help you avoid mistakes.

10.  Never miss out the major components of the graph and the scale in the introduction. Scales like percentage, quality, degree, currencies, amounts and the like.

11.  Never fail to switch between past and present tenses, when comparing two points of time while writing maps and locations,   if the second period is present; and use past and past perfect or continuous when both the periods are past.

12.  Never try to include anything from your hand; there is everything and you do not need to invent anything. Instructions like. Write a report, summarize, and write for a university lecture and the like have different tones and texts.

Differences in online sales, in two periods, josekutty From IReland writes

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.   The two pie charts below show the online shopping sales for retail sectors in Canada in 2005 and 2010.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
ielts writing sample
The charts give the information about four categories of online sales in Canada namely, Electronics and Appliance, Food& Beverage, Home & Furnishings and Video Games in 2005 and 2010.
Generally speaking, Electronics & Appliance and Food & Beverage constituted more than half of the total sales in both years.
It is vivid from the charts that Electronics & Appliance and Food & Beverage accounted for 57% of the total online sales in 2005. Later in 2010 it showed a 10 per cent increase with 62 per cent of the total annual online sales. In addition to this, Video games also bettered its sales from 18 per cent to 23 per cent over a period of five years. However, Home furnishings marked a significant decline in sales from 25 per cent in 2005 to 15 per cent in 2010.
To conclude, it is clear from the charts that Food and Beverages continued to be in high demand category in online retail market in Canada and recorded around 50 % growth over five years.

Solved paper. crimes children do. 15 and 18 years

The types of crime children less than eighteen years happen to commit these days are as severe and coldblooded as those being done by seasoned adult criminals. Therefore, there is a demand from some judicial circles that juvenile age-limit needs to be brought down from eighteen to fifteen years.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this idea?

Trialing juveniles has always been a tricky issue for the judiciary. It is becoming increasingly difficult today as many children are showing the traits of hardcore criminals. In this respect, to a greater extent, it right to bring down their age limit to fifteen, obviously, on certain conditions.

No one would deny the fact that a crime is a crime whoever does it, and it is against normal human life. Naturally, the judiciary has to ensure that ordinary life is kept safer. For example, there are media reports from across the world describing gory stories of children less than 18 years wielding guns and taking ordinary people hostage. Such children cannot be trialed as juveniles.

Besides this, seasoned criminals may make use of this under-eighteen loophole to carry out their designs. Let me site an example. Many adult criminals rope in misguided juveniles, and the latter are made to own up coldblooded crimes promising huge monitory offers. Besides all these, today’s under-eighteen children are much more informed and better-built than their old counterpart. The world must take this physical aspect while trialing such offenders.

All these arguments notwithstanding, there may be cases in which even just-under-eighteen-year olds may commit crimes either for their life or for the life their near ones. Such cases need to be treated as juvenile cases; of course, based on solid evidences and testimonies.

My conclusion is that the child offenders under-eighteen may be just one percent and there may be hardcore cases involving children as young as fifteen years as well. Here the court must ensure that the jury is always in all through the proceedings. Juvenile age-limit may be lowered to fifteen.

Anu FROM Arabia writes disagreeing on confidence and competition

Anu From Arabia writes on confidence Vs. competition

Competition as a basic human instinct is able to do as much favour for human betterment as confidence is (able to).

Do you agree or disagree with this view?

Regardless of age and sex, people rely on (regular tense form, not continuous)  some instincts like confidence and competition for their betterment even in this modern era. As both (plural) seem to be appropriate in terms of doing favours, I totally disagree with the statement, and consider optimism has a lot more to offer competition.

It is well understood that confidence is just an inner feeling of being positive in the midst of plenty of challenges ( you cannot say aplenty challenges, I corrected it before) .It neither (singular Anu) causes conflicts or negative impact among people. Likewise, people used to ( what is used to adopt and just adopt? Adopt is right. Used to is past) opt many ways in order to achieve success, but confidence is considered to be the initial step for it. Besides, it helps people to look forward and to be proactive in difficult situations. Additionally, even society has greater inclination towards it for its immense effect on human beings. The increased numbers of seminars and lectures being conducted to arouse the confidence among people, especially among children, exemplify this fact.

Moreover, people ( anu, People is plural, I am angry, not has but have)  have got all the benefits from being confident all the time. Since the beginning of time, everyone has had the drive to have this capacity for betterment. Even great many people in the past had benefited from  it. The great King Alexander was one among them. Therefore, the proved examples of such people enable people to gain the needed self-esteem and enjoy betterment in their respective lives.

Furthermore, it is relevant to say that the challenges and hindrance are on the rise in this world of virtual possibilities. Being confident all the way is one way and best way to surmount (not arrest)   those obstacles and march forward.

From the above mentioned points, it is made apparent that confidence has more salutary components to offer for humanity (you cannot say, more rather than, either rather than or more than) than competition has. It would be right to add that a confident world is likely to be more comfortable than a competing world.

By Biji Scotland: Changes in food habits: it is alright, it is a concern.

Changes in food habits are happening must faster than ever. Some people believe that it is no big deal as it is a collateral development of the changing life, while there are others who hold the view that it is a much bigger problem than it looks.
Discuss both the views and put in your opinion on it

These days many people are of the opinion that changing food habit is (the question was in plural form) becoming a part of modern world. Some, however, disagree with the view for a host of reasons. According to them, these changes in habits can generate serious issues in the future. In my opinion, this practice can disturb the normal flow of life unless people are not prudent.

It is true to say that concept of food has changed a lot as compared to the past. Nowadays, people consider these changes as part of their culture. Many people hold the view that these changes can prevent monotony in their life and create happiness. Apart from that, many people welcome this practice because of the convenience that it provides in today’s hectic life. For example, people rely on fast foods and ready-made foods for their convenience. Food is integral to human movement and therefore they are moving out with different foods that are around.

On the other hand, some people argue that changes in food habits can cause more harm than good. People consume fast foods without considering its negative effects. For instance, fast food can create more health issues like obesity, metabolic disorders and indigestion. This can impact human life. Apart from that, these days many new preparations consist of artificial flavours, colours and preservatives which are not good for health. Continuous use of these substances can cause dangerous cancer. So, these changes are not advisable. No wonder, there is great substance in the second view that it is worrisome.

The discussion makes it evident that, although changes in food habits are common these days, people should be wise enough to manage their foods so that they can enjoy both the worlds, food of their choice off and on and avoid the risks out faster changes in food habits.

Solved paper. Different positions on offering citizenship by nations.

Some countries offer citizenship to other nationals without requiring them to shed their natural citizenship, but some other nations make it mandatory that one relinquishes one’s own citizenship prior to absorbing a foreign one.

Why do different nations approach citizenship so differently?

Legally belonging to another nation has always attracted people down the ages, and now the trend is much higher. In this respect, not all nations are keeping their doors open for all unconditionally; rather some so do so while some others want foreigners to shed their native position as a condition.

These two differing positions on citizenship are not without reasons. If we take up the first stance, it could be mainly on the grounds of easily absorbing intellectually intensive population from other geographies. For example, absorbing brilliant scientists and professional through citizenship makes great investment sense. The second thing might the diplomatic understanding in the sense that like-minded nations may have mutually binding agreements to exchange or absorb each other’s population so that both the parties get benefited in the long run.

This generous attitude to offering citizenship is not found everywhere. Strictly on security grounds, some nations want foreigner to be absolutely nationals by asking them to abandon their original citizenship. For them citizenship is all about allegiance to one nation and allegiance,  as a matter of fact, can in no way be shared between nations. For example, espionage, spying, treason, terrorism, extortion and trafficking are nightmares for any nation and these are mostly done not by natives.

Besides this, some nations may not be happy to offer citizenship to other nationals. The extreme condition of forfeiting one’s natural citizenship would naturally discourage many people from trying to belong to another nation via citizenship.

In short, all nations of integrity have got their own rights to offer or not to offer citizenship to other nationals. They may have their own specific reasons as well.  But in village-like world, asking people to shed their citizenship to get another one is too much.

Three task one answers from Biji LUkose UK

The online shopping sales for retail sectors in Canada in 2005 and 2010.
The pie chart provides statistical data comparing the percentage of sales in four major sectors in Canada over a period of five years. It is evident from the graph that, during the given period, there were significant changes in their online sales.
It is clear from the graph that, in 2005, electronics and appliances sector were reported ( were reported, reported and were reporting how different are they? Were reported is wrong and the other two are right) major sales. But, this figure had dropped (from what) to 30% in 2010. In the case of food and beverage, the sales figure were increased (same correction as above, either increased or were increasing) significantly from 22% to 35% and it was the top online retail sector in 2010. Interestingly, online sale of video games rose significantly and reached over one fifth of the total sales. Surprisingly, the sales of home furnishing had declined to 15% in 2010 as compared to 25% in 2005.
Overall, it is obvious from the graph that, in 2010, food and electronic appliances were the major contributors in terms of online sales.
Leisure vs age and year Some land

The table provides statistical data comparing how people of different age groups spend their leisure time in Someland. It is evident from the graph that watching television is the most popular leisure activity in Someland. (When a superlative is used, most popular, you do not need to mention others).

It is clear from the graph that teenage and older generation is found to be spending (singular) more time watching television; around 1200 hours a year. On the other hand, the other age groups spend only half of this time in such activities. Interestingly, those who are in their 30s and 40s spend more hours in socializing with 4 or less, while teens and younger categories prefer socializing with 4 or more people.

Surprisingly, teenagers prefer group rather than individual exercises, but this is of no interest to the old age categories. Cinema is the next recreational activity, preferred by young age groups.

Overall, it is obvious from the graph that there are significant similarities and differences in the spending habits of different age group.

Changes in spending pattern in the UK

The pie chart provides statistical data comparing how the people of Britain distributed their money on various products from 1971 to 2001.

It is evident from the graph that, food (connector that does not take a comma unless it accepts another phrase in between, like, It is said that, during monsoon, people make fewer travels)  and cars claimed the major expenditure in both years.

It is clear from the graph that, in 1971, around half of the total money was spent on food, while the least was on computer. At the same time, around one-fifths of the total was allocated for cars. On the other hand, in 2001, the figure for food expenses went down to 14%, whereas money spent on cars almost doubled.

The most dramatic and significant changes noticed were in the case of restaurant and computers. The money spent on computers increased dramatically from 2% in 1971 to 12% in 2001, six- fold increase. However, percentage on books reduced from 6% to 1%, a fall by six times. Interestingly, UK the people of the UK ( not UK PEOPLE) found almost similar amounts for petrol and furniture.

Overall, it is apparent that the people of the UK ( no comma) spent more on cars, food and restaurants than on any other categories.

Changes in food habits: it is alright but it is bad. a discussion

The question was a discussion, but the candidate was approaching it as if it is an afguement. task suffered and the score scaled down to below seven. this is from Josekutty. Mr. from Ireland

Changes in food habits are happening must faster than ever. Some people believe that it is no big deal as it is a collateral development of the changing life, while there are others who hold the view that it is a much bigger problem than it looks.
Discuss both the views and put in your opinion on it

Changing food pattern is common in today’s life. Some people considered ( why past tense?) it normal. However, others think it is a serious issue. I would like to discuss both the views.

On the one hand, some people believe that rolling food pattern is fine. They say in such a way that it is very much part of their life. For example, in a survey conducted in the UK revealed the fact that 80% people do not worried about their changing food habits. To be more clearer, (you cannot say more and clearer together, ;JK. It is clearer) people are more conscious about conveniences and time than clinging to one pattern of food. In addition to this, people feel  monotony, ( not a monotony) when continuing the same pattern of food for a long time. So, It seems that people wish to look for changes in food habits as a routine life style now.

Comment: The question was in plural form (Changes in food habit are)  in the sense, changers in food habits, but you treat it as a singular idea. You have to respect the text of the question jk)
The opposing camp may have their own claims to stick on to their own guns.  They may argue that adopting to novel food habit so swiftly can cause more harm than good. To illustrate this, having food from modern food chains like motels and junk food eateries can cause severe health problems like weight gain, obesity, indigestion and even cancers of various types. To be more precise, many modern food preparations consist of artificial substance for taste and colour, which gradually eat on the precious life of human beings. So, the opposing position is not without enough substance. Once culturally inherited food preferences are in their genes, and greater changes in habits will even change the genes, they may claim.

Concluding the discussion, my opinion on faster changes in food habits are normal and it is impossible to maintain a mono food pattern at all times. Moreover, changing food pattern does not appear to be a big problem in most of the people in the community. (Changes in food habits) see how your singular tone has influenced your conclusion too.

Practising medicine is easier, not easier.

Some believe that practicing medicine is much easier today for medical personnel than it was some years ago. But, this view is not supported by all.
·         Do you think the first view is of some substance?
·         What could be the factors that make some others oppose this view?

*        Practicing medicine has been considered to be the best of all practices of all times. Some people hold the view that nowadays it has become an easier task for the medical personnel to practice it than it was. Meanwhile, others oppose this view. I think the first view is appropriate and there may be some reasons for others to think different about it.
*
In my opinion, it is well-known that practicing medicine has become so much advanced over the time so that it is not that complicated now. Firstly, the immense effects of technology and information explosion in diagnostics, pharmaceuticals and medical administering have influenced this field enormously. For example, getting medical advice online and implementing it is very much commonly observed today. Secondly, change in lifestyle and associated illness are on the increase and, in order to tackle this issue, many organizations have been established far and wide and the same makes more staffing leading to smooth working of the medical system across the spectrum.

However, there are differing views.  It is also a matter of concern for many, maybe due the fact that, today, unlike in the past, there is over dependence on technologies in medical field.  Adapting the most modern innovations may lead  to both human and non-human errors  causing serious ill effects. Other factor could be the rise in competition in this field which makes many medical personnel go through very frequent updating, serious and conscious studies, sit many exams and face interviews even after securing jobs. Other factor could be lack of job security and the high-handedness of  corporate medical managements who keep medicine industrialized.

To conclude, it cannot be denied that medical personnel are well adapted to the present working condition, and they easily practice medicine. It is relevant to consider the factors which prohibit them to practice medicine as not much easily as it is done today.

Juvenile justice: age or gravity of crime?

While considering juveniles crimes, the age of the offender needs to be the primary factor, some people claim, while others are of the view that it the gravity the crime that should matter most.

Discuss both the views on juvenile justice and put in your opinion.

The under-age offenders have always given tough times to the justice systems all over the world. Their age and the seriousness of the crimes they commit are the two aspects that frequently invite differing views while trialing them. Let me discuss these two views and state my position on it.

Initially, no one can ignore the fact that children are children and 99 percent of them do not have any willful intention to commit any crime. In addition, there are a few who happen to get involved in crimes out of circumstances. Apart from this, there have been several cases in which seasoned criminals have instigated innocent children to carry out deadly designs.

All these reinforce the view that children against the law should not be taken as criminals; rather they be given the benefit of what they are; children. But, the jury should be in while seeing the circumstances that have gone into the crime. A wrong verdict may result in two victims, not one.
The other view based on the gravity of crimes, obviously, deserves due discussion. The thing is, a crime – how simple or grave that may be -- is a crime, no matter who does it. For example, today, a juvenile in his 16 or 17 years is very well informed, physically and rightly grown and emotionally intelligent enough to know how dangerous a crime is. So such an offender needs to be seen seriously and he or she deserves an adult’s trial proceedings.

There is yet another party involved, the victim. He or she deserves justice and the jury cannot forego their concerns and legal rights. A juvenile’s age should not deprive one of. Here as well, the jury should make sure whether the offender had real intention/s or knowledge about the crime he or she did.

The discussion makes me opine that the number of children against the law of the land is negligible, and therefore, while trialing them, the jury has to be earnestly in so as to avoid miscarriage of justice. A crime does not cease to be a crime under any condition. In my view, child offenders need very serious and thread-bare trial.

Foods taken: Times per person per year:
The table breaks down the result of a study carried out to identity how many times four categories of people of two age groups have foods from five different sources.

The most visible finding is that all the observed people preferred to have greater number of homemade foods a year than others. Foods from confectioners and bakers recorded the least.
Working adult males are found outnumbering all other categories on native restaurants and foreign food chains. On average, it is 80 times a year. When homemade foods and wayside eateries recorded 20 times, confectioners attracted them 10 times a year.
