Some
countries offer citizenship to other nationals without requiring them to shed
their natural citizenship, but some other nations make it mandatory that one
relinquishes one’s own citizenship prior to absorbing a foreign one.
Why do different nations approach citizenship
so differently?
Legally
belonging to another nation has always attracted people down the ages, and now
the trend is much higher. In this respect, not all nations are keeping their
doors open for all unconditionally; rather some so do so while some others want
foreigners to shed their native position as a condition.
These
two differing positions on citizenship are not without reasons. If we take up
the first stance, it could be mainly on the grounds of easily absorbing
intellectually intensive population from other geographies. For example,
absorbing brilliant scientists and professional through citizenship makes great
investment sense. The second thing might the diplomatic understanding in the
sense that like-minded nations may have mutually binding agreements to exchange
or absorb each other’s population so that both the parties get benefited in
the long run.
This
generous attitude to offering citizenship is not found everywhere. Strictly on
security grounds, some nations want foreigner to be absolutely nationals by
asking them to abandon their original citizenship. For them citizenship is all
about allegiance to one nation and allegiance,
as a matter of fact, can in no way be shared between nations. For
example, espionage, spying, treason, terrorism, extortion and trafficking are
nightmares for any nation and these are mostly done not by natives.
Besides
this, some nations may not be happy to offer citizenship to other nationals.
The extreme condition of forfeiting one’s natural citizenship would naturally
discourage many people from trying to belong to another nation via citizenship.
In
short, all nations of integrity have got their own rights to offer or not to
offer citizenship to other nationals. They may have their own specific reasons
as well. But in village-like world,
asking people to shed their citizenship to get another one is too much.
