Waste table processed

The table below shows the amount of waste production (in millions of tonnes) in six different countries over a twenty-year period.
Write a report for university lecturer describing the information. Make comparisons wherever necessary.

Task one model answer by jaypee: highly descriptive answer for the class
The table is on the amounts of waste generated by six different countries over a 20 years’ period. The most obvious feature is that all the counties had been producing greater amounts of waste every passing period, except Korea.
Of the six countries, the Irish recorded the least in 1980, 0.6 million tonnes, but the figure for the following period is not given, and in 2000, it was five million. Closely followed by Ireland were Portugal and Poland with two and four million tonnes in 1980. Both went for a hike of one million each in 1990, and in 2000, their findings were five and 6.6; more than fifty percent increase in 20 years.
Japan, on the other hand, had an initial quantity of 28 million, and the period followed did not make any big difference, 32, and in 2000, it shot up sharply to 53. However, for Korea, whose initial figure is missing, it was 31 million in 1990, but it declined remarkably to 19 million, a fall by almost 40 percent.
Concluding the report by touching the US, it was the most waste generating nation and its figures were like 131, 151 and 192. The total waste it generated in 2000 was more than the total waste generated by all the counties throughout the period.
Imposing huge taxes on luxury products and services will be able to reduce the number of problems raised by industrialization.

Possibilities and problems of overseas education

Getting higher education from richer nations is very popular among people of many poor nations. This is highly advantageous, but it is not free from challenges.

Try to compare the advantages and challenge they face undergo in richer nations.

Overseas education, especially from richer economies, has been popular among all higher education seekers down the ages, and now it is very popular. Obviously, it benefits them greatly though there are a few concerns. Let me make a comparative look at these chances and challenges.

The primary thing is that such learners are able to get world class education accredited and accepted by all nations across the world. But this extra edge on quality and acceptance comes for a price. For example, foreign students are expected to pay two times more fees than national students. The expense is of course a challenge.

This is followed by exposure. For example, a higher education classroom in a richer nation will have a great mix of nationals from all over the world. That is, the classroom will be a cross-section of the world where there are greater possibilities for enjoying a greater world vision as part of education. But, we cannot forget the fact that, sometimes, students may have to face discrimination challenges.

And, finally, brilliant students may be able to enjoy lucrative employment offers right after their studies; let it be the country where they get educated from or in their home-country where foreign educated candidates are highly appreciated. Here too there is a problem with adapting to an alien work culture or a different academic follow up.

Comparing the possibilities and problems, it may be said that the former are much more lasting than the latter. To put it precisely, the challenges are for a while whereas chances are for a lifetime. It is always good to get educated from a richer academic ambience.

Hunger in this resource-rich world. why, how to remove it

The world has enough resources to eliminate hunger. Still, millions of people of different parts of the world go to bed hungry.

·         Why is this sorry state of affairs?
·         How can we make the world hunger-free?

It is an undeniable fact that the world is rich enough to keep the whole population fed decently. This condition notwithstanding, people in huge numbers go hungry all over the world. There must be obvious reasons for this, and there are ways to keep the world off hunger.

The primary reason for hunger in this resource-rich world is the uneven distribution of population. For example, demographic findings show that nearly 57 percent of the global population is housed in Asia where, naturally, hunger is common. Besides this, the global resources are divided unequally between poor and rich regions. To be precise, 60 percent of the resources is wielded by the rich European countries and the Americas, and the remaining is left for the rest of the world. No wonder, there is hunger. To cap it all, the rich-poor divided that exists between people of the same population also is able to keep many people hungry.

Anyway, there are ways to see that the wolf is kept at bay. The first way-out is to give quality education for all; so that the educated will find jobs and they will be able to afford three times meal a day. Apart from this, there should be concerted efforts to keep population from exploding further. Along with this, densely populated nation may resort to scientific farming practices so as to meet the rising food needs of the population. The rich nations can share their technology and surplus supplies to other parts of the world.

To put it briefly, hunger in this rich world may have different reasons regionally speaking, but the remedial measures to eradicate it from the face of it are of greater significance wherever there is hunger.

My Christmas message to all my takers

The best of surrenders
Jayaprakash A. Panicker

The Lord of the lost-loves
Oh, I beseech thee, now
In these most joyous times,
Shower thy balmy grace
On all the ones of this circle
Who are begging and giving.

I love my lord in the guise
Of the poorest of all around
When I see you in edifices
I fail to realize the ground.
May you not be draped in riches
Every time I may find one in rags?

Be a child, you spoke, for His love
Or empty yourself to escape to it.
In these times of love and joy
Let me stand up surrendered.

For, YOU let me simply realize
Only the toughest of conquerors
Can stage the biggest surrenders.

Letter to the Editor format

To the Editor:
David Brooks and Ezekiel J. Emanuel, whose article in The Atlantic about not wanting to live past 75 he cites, philosophize about health and attitudes, but their approach through averages shows insensitivity to individuals who vary in so many ways.
Dr. Emanuel suggests that people over 75 will have little or no purpose so they should expend no effort to live longer. I am over 75 and still very much have purpose. Perhaps he is trying to hold down the national cost of health care.
Mr. Brooks suggests that elders have more empathy, knowledge and maybe wisdom. Yes, some, but many do not. Surely he has seen the stubbornness, the surviving hatred and the loss of perspective that too often accompanies old age, not to mention of those in need, physically, emotionally and financially.
I am pleased to be among those smiling, but I feel lucky, not typical. I wish these able observers had shown more sensitivity in their writing about older people.

Model for Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:
At the age of 89, and recovering from two knee replacements, I am deeply disappointed in David Brooks’s column.
Mr. Brooks should walk down the halls of America’s nursing homes and see the number of elderly women sitting in the hall outside their rooms, staring listlessly into space most of the day, or hear their screams of “help!” at night, repeated again and again.
Even in upscale residences inhabited by the wealthy elderly, he could imagine what it would be like to live day after day, night after night, in the same environment, encircled by one’s aging, feeble and dying peers.
The elderly in this country are essentially invisible. We have little role in society. Much of our time is spent looking after our aging bodies. We no longer drive (if we are smart!) and are locked into television’s drivel for entertainment.
I know that I am luckier than most, still in my home, with a partner of many years, blessed with so many younger friends and loving children, still writing, sometimes even teaching.
But my heart bleeds for so many of my contemporaries, alone in a society that does not seem to care.

The IELTS General Training Task 1 Writing Test

The IELTS General Training Writing Test lasts for 1 hour and includes 2 tasks. Task 1 is a letter and you must write at least 150 words. You should spend about 20 minutes out of the hour for task 1. Task 2 is an essay and you must write at least 250 words. You should spend about 40 minutes for Task 2.
The Task for the IELTS General Training Task 1 Writing

The IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 asks you to write a letter of a minimum of 150 words in response to some situation or problem. The task will probably ask you to complain about something, to request information, ask for help, to make arrangements and/or explain a situation. All these are fairly similar tasks.
Marking for the IELTS General Training Task 1 Writing

The IELTS General Training Task 1 Writing will be marked in four areas. You will get a mark from 1 to 9 on Task Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Your final band for task 1 will be effectively an average of the four marks awarded in these areas. Task 1 writing is less important than task 2 and to calculate the final writing mark, more weight is assigned to the task 2 mark than to task 1's mark. To get a good overall mark for The IELTS General Training Writing though, both tasks have to be well answered so don't hold back on task 1 or give yourself too little time to answer it properly.

Task Achievement This where you can really make a difference through careful preparation. This mark grades you on basically "have you answered the question". It marks whether you have covered all requirements of the task suffiently and whether you presented, highlighted and illustrate the key points appropriately.

Coherence and Cohesion These two are interrelated which is why they are done together. Cohesion is how your writing fits together. Does your writing with its ideas and content flow logically? Coherence is how you are making yourself understood and whether the reader of your writing understands what you are saying.

Tax based governance benefits in the richer economies

In many richer economies, the richest that constitute 20 percent of the total population are found to be contributing nearly 70 percent of the country's total tax revenue. So some people hold the view that the richest need to be given greater governance benefits than the middle class or lower middle class of the population.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this tax based governance benefits?

How right is it to spend for a life-friendly Planet up?

Spending hugely on finding the possibility of a habitable Planet, in some people’s view, is much worth it while others are of the view that the planet we already have has got enough issues which call for great funds.
·        What could their arguments and state what you feel about spending hugely for a life-friendly planet.

The rights and wrongs of spending on space missions to find a livable planet have always invited diverse opinions. For some, it is a great idea, while for others such funds are to be channeled to address the concerns of the Planet we are in.

The first view may be on the grounds that our Planet is running out of resources. Naturally, it would augur well of any nation that is able to earmark greatly on space explorations. Who could predict that such a nation would not land on a new livable Planet? There could be further justification that a planet, if found, would be worthier than all the money man has ever made or spent.

The other camp, on the other hand, would say that the Planet we are blessed with is enough to keep the whole human race go on forever provided all can lead a planet-friendly life. Nature has a rare mechanism to balance the imbalances if enough time is given. Besides this, there may be a claim that problems like poverty, lack of shelter, unemployment, bio-diversity debacle and the like need huge funds. Therefore, space missions can wait.

Discussing both the views, I am inclined to opine that spending on an unknown Planet needs to go on, but it need not be at the cost of other pressing priorities like the ones listed above. Nations need to decide on what is more significant.

Concluding it, it would be a nicer idea for all willing nations to go for a common fund for space missions. After all, the need for finding a new planet is felt by all nations. The differing opinions on this will go for consensus only when such a fund is raised.

Carbon is on our face

Carbon emission and its allied concerns have come to the doorsteps of ordinary man around the world, and he can no longer be reluctant to go responsible for whatever he does to the Planet while pursuing his life.

Discuss.

Carbon menace is on our face, and the common-man has started to feel the pinch of it, and it is man’s callous attitude to the Planet that has made things to this far. Therefore it is expected of him to be accountable for whatever he does to keep his life from now on.

The eerie face of rising carbon footprint can be seen around us in myriad forms. The temperature rise and the resultant setbacks in the field of farming have been taking the global farm produce to new lows. Obviously, millions of farmers are being affected by crop failure, draught and floods. This is followed by disease conditions generated by carbon intensive air. For example, respiratory disorders are extensively being reported from semi-urban areas too. Besides this, the whole world is going water-scarce. It happens like the available water goes contaminated, and periodic supply of rain gets disrupted. Carbon menace touches you, me and all.

Undoubtedly, we have been instrumental to the present state of affairs our Planet undergoes. It is, therefore, our job to observe that whatever we do from now on should be confirming to the well-being of the Planet and we all must ensure that carbon intensive industries are discouraged, their products are shunned and unfriendly human activities are loathed. We can no longer blame governments and global bodies; rather every responsible human being must go pro-planet and anti-carbon with immediate effect.

The discussion has made one thing very much clear. The world has started reaping what it has been sowing time to time. Man has been instrumental to all the carbon related menaces and it is time for him to mend his ways and control carbon emission. It is now or never.

Intimates and curios are not so close as they used to be

There is an observation that people these days do not seem to care as much about intimate things like gifts, souvenirs and curios as those of the past.

·        Why is this shift of attitude to closer things?
·        Is it a good or bad development?

People have always had some things closer to their hearts. But, of late, there is decline in the way they care about such things. This reversal of order has solid reasons, and, in my view, it is not an encouraging trend.

What makes a thing closer to one differs from person to person. But this difference notwithstanding, there are a few forces that keep people complacent of such things. The first thing is affluence. For example, many are able to own precious things, and presents and compliments are passe’ for them, and they switch their intimacy faster than ever.

What follows next are opportunities. To be clearer, souvenirs and curios make us remember certain times and experiences we had had. But, today, people are free-moving and they happen to get different times and experiences every now and then. Who cares of these so called “intimates?”

It is true that people value things differently. But, under-valuing an intimate object does not augur well of anyone. Closer things spice up our life. Those which make us going, at times, at testing times to be precise, are those inanimate objects. Let me make it evident. Life is unpredictable and humans are vulnerable. This volatility is addressed a little by having keepsakes very close to our hearts. A present from a distant or dead one, a curio from another landscape or a memento marking an occasion and/or the like would keep our otherwise mundane life colourful.

All the people have the freedom to take their dear things the way they like. They may justify it in myriad ways. However, considering the value such things attach to our life, it is sad that today people are moving away from them. It is always great to have some things closer.

Comparison in task one much far slightly most least et al

Qualify your comparisons with much/far/slightly or a number

This is similar. The idea here is that you still use less/more/fewer but this time you explain how much. Typically, the best way to do this is to use a number:
Far fewer people chose to travel by train than by car. [Where’s the detail?]
25% fewer people chose to travel by train than by car. [Better now we have detail and not just a comparison]

Comparisons with most or least/fewest
When you are looking for details to include, the highest/lowest number is almost always important. This too is a form of comparison.
The most popular form of entertainment in the UK was going to the cinema.

The least common form of transport was taking a taxi.

Comparison in task one

1. Comparisons between sentences

One way to make comparisons is to start a new sentence with a word/phrase that shows that you are about to make a comparison with the previous sentence. The basic words you need here are:

In contrast
The most popular form of holiday among the Welsh was self-catering with over 60% choosing to cook for themselves. In contrast, only 5 % of the English chose this form of vacation and hotel accommodation was much more popular at 48%.
In comparison

Almost 50% of the English, Scots and Northern Irish chose to stay in a hotel for their holiday. In comparison, staying in self-catering accommodation was much less popular with around 10% of people choosing this.

However
The general pattern was for hotel accommodation to be the most popular with around half the people choosing it. The majority of the Welsh, however, chose to stay in self-catering accommodation.

On the other hand
It is clear that a majority of the British chose to stay in hotel for their holiday. On the other hand, there was an exception to this because over 50%  of the Welsh opted for self-catering accommodation.

Note that we normally use a comma after In contrast and In comparison.
Note that there are lots of different ways to use compare and contrast and these are just the most basic examples. If you are looking for a higher band score, it’s good advice to learn different ways to use these words.

Note too that typically however is not used as the first word in a sentence.

A belief on what makes one a good person. What is yours?

There is a belief that a good person is one who is able to learn the moral and ethical lessons that govern human life and diligently follow them. Besides this, he or she has to responsibly carry out many social roles in their own individual capacity as teachers, doctors, helpers, drivers to mention a few.

Is this belief going in line with what you think that makes a person good?

Defining what it takes to be a good person is rather hard, and there will be as many definitions as there are good people. Barring this fix, there are certain basic elements for all. And, to me, the given belief on an ideal person is very much to my definition.

Being part of humanity, all good people are expected to know certain moral lessons and ethical canons which may not be written or recorded; rather they are there in all milieus. This is a prerequisite and the same is sure to add a shade of quality to the person. Besides this, I am also under the belief that simply knowing these things is one thing and meticulously following them is something else. Anyone can know them, but not all can follow them all the time. A good person will.

Is that enough to make one a good person? No. I sternly believe that every good person does have to put on a socially binding role whatever that is. A doctor has to be compassionate to his clientele while being professional, a driver has to be cautious about the vehicle and the road he manages and all parents must go the extra mile to keep their children socially useful and civic conscious. The harmonious social life calls for such attributes from all good human beings.

Besides all these things, I feel that a person, in my definition, needs to cherish a heart that would enable him or her to live a little more for others. I believe that such an attribute will add a new edge to anyone.  My definition of a good person is complete.

Attempting suicide a crime, death sentence is legal

In some countries attempting to commit suicide is a crime whereas in some others taking life as a punishment is legal as well.

·         How acceptable are these two different legal approaches to human life to you?

Different legal systems look at human life through differing angles; failed suicide attempt is a crime in one place and death sentence for serious crimes is legal too. Anyway, I find both of them partly alright.

Let me first see ‘attempt to commit suicide’. There are two types of suicides; willful and forced. When it comes to the former, there is a double tragedy. For example, going to the extent of suicide itself is a tragedy and slapping a case against a failed attempt is another one. In this case, the State must try to rehabilitate the victim instead of vilifying him or her.
Coming to the second, forced suicide, unless the law takes its course, the victim may try it again. For example, if a case is registered against the failed victim, the law can identify whether there had been any force behind that extreme attempt. If yes, such people can be nailed and brought behind bars and the victim can be allowed to lead a normal life. Therefore, the law needs to take a look at all suicides.

Similar is the case with death sentence: the court can go wrong sometimes, or people may frame a person and manipulate evidences and eliminate an innocent. For example, lately China, to its dismay, came to realize that a boy of 18 was put to death before some years and now he has been declared innocent. This irreversible act will haunt China all the time. But, some heinous, hardcore criminals, who deserve no love or compassion or kindness, need to be eliminated by law; taking a life for the sake of great many.

My conclusion is both the approaches have some relevance in human life and the jury should be in and wiser while handling such cases. Anyway, any court must avoid double tragedies.

Gender inequality. parenting can close the gap

·         It is written by Ms. Seena. Elizabeth International, PALA.
·         It is a model for others.
·         I was just giving the question and she was writing it sans any discussion in the class.
·         The original write up had a few negligible errors, and those parts are highlighted with correction. To me, this essay will fetch a clean SEVEN for sure. Jaypee. It is loaded in www.jpsukham.blogspot.com and sent to all my online students overseas.

Gender discrimination can be done away with in the long run if the new generation nuclear parents are able to bring up their children with due gender respect in the family.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?

Gender inequality is still persistent in many parts of the world. There are many ways to close this gap. It is true that parents have a big role in meeting this goal. 32 words
There is a saying that, today’s children are tomorrow’s citizens. If both boys and girls are given equal importance at home, it will get reflected in their thoughts. When they become parents, they will not crave for baby boys or baby girls rather they will wait for healthy babies; and the latter be brought up like equals. Above all, the children should be taught of the genetic differences of male and females, and how to respect both the genders equally. This will eliminate the deep-rooted mischief in them. In addition to that, parents can make it clear to the children as to how both genders are equally important for nature and for the survival of human species. 115 words

On the contrary, not only the parents have the responsibility to bring up them children with gender respect to eliminate gender discrimination, but also the other socially relevant institutions and employers have their own part to deal with this problem. However, what will be the thought and behavior of an individual is the reflection of what he or she has learnt from home. Therefore, it is possible to bring both the genders closer, if parents are able to give equal importance to their sons and daughters. 85 words.

In short, the new generation educated parents have an important role in elimination gender discrimination because family is the basic unit of any society. The changes must happen to the family first. Then, naturally, it would become a positive trend in the long run. 40 words.

Tourism has made the world generous and transparent

Tourism has made the world much more generous and transparent than it was.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this observation?

The biggest industry of the world, tourism, stands spread across the length and breadth of the world, influencing the latter in countless ways. The most visible change is the generosity and transparency the world has come to sport up its sleeve.

Generosity by definition is an attitude to go the extra mile for others. If we go by this definition, there are enough reasons to believe that our world has become really generous. Let me prove it with an example. Some time back, several nations were rather apprehensive of allowing people in their soil in the name of tourism. This was due to their being unable to be tolerant. Now it is not so, and tourists from far and wide are given red carpet welcome, and they are treated really generously. The same shade of attitude is seen almost in all tourism genres no matter who visits and where he or she is from.

Transparency, in the same way, is a condition in which things are visible for all. Tourism-dependent nations now make it a point that their wares are projected, promoted professionally and the tourists are given a white paper on what is in store for them. For example, tour operators of all make are willing to keep things as much clear as possible for their clientele, and this is done knowing full well that tourism is a money spinner and any hidden agenda on it might backfire sooner than later thanks to the very transparency. The Net, print media, audio visual media and aids are extensively used by travelers to be on guard.

However, there may a few rotten apples in every basket. The same way, some sporadic tourism attractions are not willing to be as transparent and generous as the rest of the world. This fact notwithstanding, it is right to conclude that the observation is of great significance.

The press and social media who is powerful and popular

The personal electronic presence on the web like Facebook portals, blogs and similar social media platforms have become common-man’s Press, and, as a result, the significance of conventional newspaper is going down among youngsters, professionals and even politicians.

·         Do you think personal portals are so powerful as to make common-man fall back on them like the Press?

·         Is it alright to believe that the popularity of newspaper is waning?

Social media as such have been making great headway in terms of carrying out media jobs to an extent, and ordinary people depend on them for expressing themselves and being informed thereof. But, I do not think it is as powerful as the Press, and the popularity of the latter is getting higher.

The electronic presence of a person on the web is powerful in a limited sense as it is confined mostly to circles and fraternities. For example, these accounts are mutually shared and kept uploaded and downloaded. But, in some cases, they are used by youngsters, professionals and politicians to invite the attention of their followers and networks. Opinion polls, surveys and actions and reactions of a community are carried out in a global manner, and there are occasions when these portals act as instruments of governments. There is s Press role of course, but not as powerful as newspapers.

Newspapers are a different class by themselves, and they have been making enormous changes, even revolutions, in the world. Basically, the Press is called the Fourth Estate of a functioning democracy where the governance is smoothened by newspapers. Secondly, reading is a different experience, and a newspaper is a brainchild of some hundred writers, to say the least, and the information, data, observations and opinions  a Daily has are too much for any social media platform. Finally, many media surveys show that the readership graph of newspaper is mounting. So it is wrong to believe that the Press is fading. Press is for all who can read, but social medias are only for techies.

The conclusion is social media is one instrument and the Press is a totally different one, though both are able to carry out some common duties. But, the latter has proved that it is too formidable for any other media.
