The press and social media who is powerful and popular

The personal electronic presence on the web like Facebook portals, blogs and similar social media platforms have become common-man’s Press, and, as a result, the significance of conventional newspaper is going down among youngsters, professionals and even politicians.

·         Do you think personal portals are so powerful as to make common-man fall back on them like the Press?

·         Is it alright to believe that the popularity of newspaper is waning?

Social media as such have been making great headway in terms of carrying out media jobs to an extent, and ordinary people depend on them for expressing themselves and being informed thereof. But, I do not think it is as powerful as the Press, and the popularity of the latter is getting higher.

The electronic presence of a person on the web is powerful in a limited sense as it is confined mostly to circles and fraternities. For example, these accounts are mutually shared and kept uploaded and downloaded. But, in some cases, they are used by youngsters, professionals and politicians to invite the attention of their followers and networks. Opinion polls, surveys and actions and reactions of a community are carried out in a global manner, and there are occasions when these portals act as instruments of governments. There is s Press role of course, but not as powerful as newspapers.

Newspapers are a different class by themselves, and they have been making enormous changes, even revolutions, in the world. Basically, the Press is called the Fourth Estate of a functioning democracy where the governance is smoothened by newspapers. Secondly, reading is a different experience, and a newspaper is a brainchild of some hundred writers, to say the least, and the information, data, observations and opinions  a Daily has are too much for any social media platform. Finally, many media surveys show that the readership graph of newspaper is mounting. So it is wrong to believe that the Press is fading. Press is for all who can read, but social medias are only for techies.

The conclusion is social media is one instrument and the Press is a totally different one, though both are able to carry out some common duties. But, the latter has proved that it is too formidable for any other media.
